Update YourHome Using
Five Affordable
Actions
By Fiona Creech
When remodeling or renovat-ing your home, it's important tobalance what you want to doand the items you wish to pur-chase with your budget limita-tions. After all, your projectbudget will probably be yourbiggest constraint when buyingmaterials or contracting profes-sional services. Fortunately, there are ways to upgrade, main-tain and even modernize yourhome, all while sticking to anaffordable budget. If you want totransform your home from bor-ing and outdated to interestingand modern, try using these five
affordable actions.Work in Small Steps Although you might want to
redecorate your entire home allat the same time, it's usually notin the budget to do so. Instead, focus on remodeling just oneroom, or work on a single projectinstead of starting several differ-ent projects. This affordableapproach to home decoratingalso has the advantage of giving
you plenty of time to make allthe right decisions. You'll alsoavoid the problem of gettingpart of the project done, thenrunning out of money to com-plete it. After all, you want to cre-ate a beautiful home, not a col-lection of wishful and yet incom-plete home improvement proj-ects.
Set Realistic Goals Although you might really
want to buy all new furnitureplus a big screen television aspart of your family room renova-tion project, you might not beable to afford to buy all theseitems at the same time. Instead, take the time to really under-stand your budget, in addition to
what you would like to buy foryour home. Think about what isreally essential, and what items
would be simply "nice to have."By setting priorities and realisticgoals, you'll have a better chanceof getting your project complet-ed without overspending.
Don't Fall Victim to PressureIf your friends and other fam-
ily members have some of thethings that you would really like
to have in your own home, don'tautomatically succumb to thepressure of "keeping up with theJoneses." After all, everyone hasdifferent priorities, differentexpenses, and a different budgetthey must adhere to. Focus onbeing content and happy with
what you can comfortablyafford, instead of always wanting
what other people have.Open a Savings AccountEven if you try to always stick
to your home renovation anddecorating budget, there arealways going to be those times
when something unexpectedlybreaks. If you need to replace orrepair a big ticket appliance in
your home, your monthly budg-et simply might not be enough. To prepare for these emergen-
cies, you should start a savingsaccount. You can then use themoney you save to pay forexpensive repairs or to replaceitems when it becomes neces-sary.
Brand Names Aren't Alwaysthe Best Choice
Although you might wish thatyou could always buy the trendi-est brands, this is not always inthe budget. Fortunately, thereare plenty of replicas on themarket that look just as good, but cost far less. Decide on thedesigner look you like, then shopuntil you find something com-parable and yet more affordable.

Therapeutic lifestyle changes are important for the preventionand management of heart disease. Dyslipidemia (abnormal lipidlevels in the blood) is one of the major modifiable risk factors ofcoronary heart disease and other cardiovascular conditions.Modifications in one's diet and regimen, collectively known astherapeutic lifestyle changes (TLC), are used by doctors andnutritionists as a key component of treatment in the manage-ment of dyslipidemia.
The diet component of therapeutic lifestyle change is based onlowering the intake of saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium tohelp reduce the blood cholesterol level and lower cardiovascularrisk. According to therapeutic lifestyle change diet guidelines, one should consume just enough calories to achieve or maintaina healthy weight and not more than 25-30% of the day's totalcalories from fat. Also, it is advised to consume less than 7% oftotal calories from saturated fat, less than 10% of total calories
from polyunsaturated fats, up to 20% of total calories frommonounsaturated fats, and less than 200 mg of dietary choles-terol a day.
In order to minimize saturated fat intake, one needs to limitthe consumption of ghee, butter, margarine, coconut, coconutoil, palm oil, and palm kernel oil. Choosing lean meats (likechicken without the skin) and fish over red meat or shellfish mayalso help to significantly reduce saturated fat intake. To stepdown the total cholesterol intake, foods mainly egg yolk, cheese, crab, lobsters, pork, mutton, and shrimps should be kept to aminimum.
The therapeutic lifestyle change diet also promotes limitingthe intake of sodium to around 2400 mg per day. Dietary restric-tion of sodium firstly involves restricting the intake of salt andsecondly avoiding highly salted foods such as crackers, potatochips, salted nuts, salted popcorn, salted snacks, ready-to-eatand processed foods, canned vegetables, baking powder, soda, and ajinomoto.
The recommendations for cholesterol and sodium remain the
same irrespective of the total caloric i ntake of a person; however,
the recommendations for saturated fat and total fat are based on
the percentage of calories an individual consumes.
Furthermore, the therapeutic lifestyle change diet emphasizes
on the intake of 10-25 grams of soluble fiber every day. Soluble
fiber found in many high-fiber foods like oats, citrus fruits,
apples, barley, psyllium, flax seeds and beans decreases the
absorption of cholesterol by binding to it and thereby eliminating
it from the body.
The other major component of the therapeutic lifestyle change
is moderate exercise, which has been found to reduce the levels
of bad cholesterol (LDL and triglycerides) whilst increasing the
level of good cholesterol (HDL) in the blood.

Arteries carry blood from the heart to all parts of thebody. Blood pressure is the force that pushed along thearteries every time the heart beats. So, blood pressure isa measure of how hard the heart has to work to pumpblood.
This process is known as systolic pressure. Theprocess where the heart is at rest, between beats andthe blood pressure falls is known as diastolic pressure.Blood pressure is measured using a blood pressure cuffand recorded as systolic pressure over diastolic pres-sure. The top number indicates the systolic pressureand the bottom indicates the diastolic pressure. Normalblood pressure must be lower than 120/80.
Blood pressure varies during the course of a day. It islowest when the person is resting and gradually rises asthe person gets up. Blood pressure usually rises whenthe person is tense, agitated, or generally energetic,
even though it stays pretty much the same. Blood pres-
sure in children is comparatively much lower than in
the adults since pressure rises as a person ages.
The systolic and diastolic reading of 140/90 or higher
indicates high blood pressure. This usually results in
faster heartbeat as the heart tries to pump blood faster,
and this might result in a stroke, heart attack, and kid-
ney problems due to the pressure on the arteries.
Severe medical problems also cause blood pressure to
rise. Also, arteries become hardened and narrowed with
cholesterol plaque and calcium, resulting in the heart
having to pump harder to make blood pass through
these arteries. When the heart pumps harder, blood
pressure tends to automatically increase.
High blood pressure is linked to hypertension, which
leads to heart attack. With a reading higher than
180/110 the patient required immediate medical atten-
tion since the risk of heart attack is greatest.

The formula for losing weight is simple: eatless and exercise more. But, it's not really allthat simple, is it? Long-term weight loss isn'timpossible, but you do have to be committed.Having a weight loss plan for your success is agood start.
Here are ten items that should go into yourweight loss plan.
1. Eat breakfast. This keeps you from get-ting too hungry later and then losing control
over what you choose to eat later in the day.2. Stock your refrigerator and pantry withhealthy foods and snacks and limit high-fat,high-salt snacks such as potato chips andcookies.
3. Fill up on Fiber. Eat foods like fruits, veg-etables and whole grains. The fibers in thesefoods will fill you up leaving less room forunhealthy choices.
4. Don't fall into bad habits on weekends. Many people will follow a strict diet on week-ends only to fall back into eating more(unhealthy) on the weekends as a reward for"being good" all week. Unfortunately, this cancause you to regain the weight you may havelost during the week.
5. Watch portion sizes. Your perception of what a serving size should be and a "true"serving size can differ dramatically. Measure
your portions accurately, especially when you
first start your healthy eating regime.6. Set lifestyle goals - not weight loss goals.
Commitment to eating healthy foods doeslead to healthy weight loss -- gradually.Looking at your weight daily can cause dis-couragement and will make many peoplegive up and go back to unhealthy food choic-es.
7. Take healthy snacks with you when youtake road trips. Grab healthy granola bars, bananas, apples and other fruit to prevent thetemptation of stopping for a candy bar or
milk shake.8. Don't deny yourself the foods you love. Ifyou absolutely love chocolate, go ahead andhave a small piece - half of a candy barinstead of a whole one! And avoid eating your"splurges" every day. Save them for when youreally need them!
9. Start moving. Exercise is the key to longterm weight loss. You've heard the saying,"Move it or lose it." Too true!
10. Keep a journal. Writing down what youeat, when and how much you exercise and
your moods will keep you on track and moti-vated to continue the course.
Weight loss is achieved by both diet andexercise. It is also achieved by persistence. If
you "fall off the wagon" one day, pick yourselfup and continue your healthy lifestyle thenext. Don't give up!

Audiences are long familiar with Jeff Daniels acting perform-ances on the big screen in such movies at Terms of Endearment,The Purple Rose of Cairo, Arachnophobia, Dumb & Dumber, andmy personal favorite; Escanaba in da Moonlight, but this
Michigan-based actor is also a singer/songwriter and accom-plished guitarist with four CD recordings under his hat.On Friday, August 19th, Mr. Daniels will bring his captivating
musical show to the Crooked Tree Arts Center in Petoskey. Hepens most of the music he performs, songs that reflect his ever-changing view of everyday life.
I dont write hits, Daniels explains on his website; jeff-
daniels.com, They (songs) are my diaries. I had everything Iveever written in this big, black notebook. Some of them weretyped, some were in long hand, but all of them had a time and aplace that marked some moment in my life. If you really wantedto get to know me, youd find me in there.
A special guest during the evening will be Brian Vander Ark, a
Lansing area native who scored a billboard chart topper, TheFreshman, in the 1990s with his band Verve Pipe.Tickets for the August 19th performance, which begins at 7 pm,
are $30 and available at Crooked Tree, Grain Train and Blissfest . Iftickets remain available, they can also be purchased at the door. For additional information, visit www.crookedtree.org.
The heart of the multi-faceted use of theKirtland Center for the Performing Arts is thePerforming Artist Series, and the newly struc-tured Build-Your-Own-Season ticket programis designed to give patrons who see four or m oreshows a generous discount, even if they do notbuy a full eight-show season ticket. We knowthat financially, times are still tight, said KCPACoordinating Director Jomarie Gurnow, Wewant to give folks a way to use their entertain-ment dollars for high-quality, live performanceswithout breaking the bank, or being forced tobuy tickets for every show.
We have engaged performers for 2011-2012,mindful of the type of entertainment thatappeals to our Northern Michigan patron base,
Gurnow said. Before people can experience theexhilaration of a live audience, they have towant to see the artist who is performing.
When a patron purchases tickets for two ormore Premium Shows at KCPA, they may pur-chase the same seats for two or more ValueShows at half-price. Premium Shows includeThe Osmonds, season opener back by populardemand; Legendary singer-songwriter RichardMarx; one of Comedy Centrals Top 10Comedians of All Time Sinbad; and countryfavorite Joe Diffie remember John DeereGreen?
Value shows include grand scale illusionistBill Blagg (think David Copperfield); the spec-tacular Lakota Sioux Dance Theatre that is a
stunning mix of music, dance, color and folk-lore; the Celtic bombshell musical group Slidethat had everyone on their feet for their previ-ous engagement at KCPA; and the family holi-day extravaganza, A Christmas Carol that willfeature food, music, art, caroling, and the show!We call them value shows because they featureworld-class entertainment at an especially lowprice, Gurnow said. No one will leave any per-formance at the KCPA disappointed. Every showis tremendous.
With a Build-Your-Own-Season package, aperson can see a first-class live performance forless than the price of a movie ticket with pop-corn and a soda. And the refreshments are stillcomplimentary at the Kirtland Center.
We also offer low-cost child care in the new, nearby, on-campus Childrens Learning Center;date night with dinner available at the KirtlandGrille before Richard Marx, Sinbad and BillBlagg; a courtesy parking shuttle; and ticket andgift giveaways at each performance.
Our local community partners can takeadvantage of sponsorships featuring live com-mercials in front of hundreds of patrons ateach performance to reach their customer basein a fun and entertaining way. Sponsoring ashow at Kirtland gives businesses a way to builda one-on-one live relationship with our audi-ence, Gurnow said. It should be much morepersonal and impactful than running an ad any-where else.
Actor and musician Jeff Daniels will present an evening of
music and stories with special guest Brian Vander Ark at
the Crooked Tree Arts Center on Friday, August 19th.
