David’s Thoughts...

It’s sometimes a delicate thing to honor one or more persons when we gather as a church. There may be someone not completely comfortable with the idea that we might assemble in our customary setting of worship, yet focus our honor and praise on someone other than God alone. It is true, our worship should indeed be centered on God and no other. Only Jehovah--the one who animated us with his breath, who singularly stands on the precipice of both edges of time itself and stitched together the very essence of our universe--alone is to be worshiped. But it is also true that we do not gather for worship alone. God’s own finger inscribed more than just one commandment upon the stone tablets Moses brought down from Sinai. Jesus gave two answers when asked which command was the greatest. Three times was Peter implored to feed the flock. “Honor your father and mother,” says the ancient text. “Edify” and “build up each other” repeats Paul in several of his letters. “Pray for each other,” writes James. Paul even says, “Outdo one another in showing honor.’ Today, we honor those people who had a hand in restoring something our small group of believers had lost. But our loss, became God’s gain and He used it to bring new faces to us and new souls to Christ. His handiwork is unmistakable. While these folks were lending a hand in to repair mere brick and mortar, God used them in big and small ways to build up His Kingdom. So, let’s honor and thank them today and, “let [our] love be genuine.” (Romans 12) And then, with thanksgiving for them, let us truly worship the “I AM”, who is, who was and is to come.
