God’s Loyal Love by John D. Telgren
God’s Loyal Love Cont’d on p2
There is a Hebrew word that translators have
had a struggle trying to translate adequately. "Hesed"
has been translated, "love," "loyalty," "mercy," or
"loving kindness." Recent linguistic studies have
demonstrated that the idea of this word is more pre-
cisely something like "covenant love" or "covenant
loyalty." God's explicit self-revelation when he
passed by Moses in the cleft of the rock uses this
word.
"Then the Lord passed by in front of him
and proclaimed, "The Lord, the Lord
God, compassionate and gracious, slow
to anger, and abounding in loving kind-
ness and truth; who keeps loving kind-
ness for thousands, who forgives iniquity,
transgression and sin; yet He will by no
means leave the guilty unpunished, visit-
ing the iniquity of fathers on the children
and on the grandchildren to the third and
fourth generations (Exo 34:6-7)."
Though God visits the iniquity of the fathers
on the third and fourth generations, his "hesed" is to
the thousandth generation (Deut 7:9). His "hesed" is

everlasting (Psalm 118). It was on the basis
of God's "hesed" that God forgave Israel
(Num 14:18-19). God delights in "hesed"
rather than a sacrifice (Hos 6:6). "Hesed"
lived out in the lives of his people meant
loyalty to him as God, and compassion to
his people (Hos 6:1ff). Jesus quoted Hosea
6:6 in an effort to teach about compassion
for one another (Matt 12:6).
Hesed is likely the idea behind the
New Testament use of "agape," which de-
scribes God's love, and the unconditional love
we are to have for each other. It is compas-
sionate, loyal, dedicated, sacrificial love (1
Cor 13:1-8).
Everyone!
A Note from Michael-- “If you have no desire to become a class teacher, I want to encour-age you to attend anyway. This seminar is for more than teachers; it’s great for anyone who wants to be a better Bible student. Much of what we discuss will help you mine the riches of Scripture for yourself. Whether you want to be a better Bible student or teacher, I hope to see you on November 10th!”

One of my favorite scriptures is Love the Lord with all. Its found in the books of Mathew, Mark and Luke.
Mark 12:28-31. “Which of the commands is the most important?”29 Jesus answered, “The most important command is this: ‘People of
Israel, listen! The Lord our God is the only Lord. 30 Love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your
mind, and all your strength.’31 The second most important command is this: ‘Love your neighbor the same as you love
yourself.’ These two commands are the most important.” The scribes here were trying to trap Jesus. They were jealous of his growing popularity, and they were letting this dis-
tract them form listening to him and following Him. Every time they tried to expose Jesus as an imposter, He outwitted them and left
them looking more foolish than the time before. Jesus wants us to know the most important thing we can do is to love the Lord. He
doesn’t say to just like, but to fully love Him with all your heart, all your soul, and all mind and all your strength. He wants all full
commitment from us to Him. By putting God first in our lives, we are also putting all others before ourselves. Jesus says that the
second greatest commandment is to love others as yourself. God wants us to have the best life possible. If everyone would hear and
obey His word, of loves others as self, the world would be a better place. Satan has convinced many people of this world that selfish-
ness is better than God’s way. Satan says to take care of yourself first and others are not our responsibilities. Now we must choose
which way we will live our life Choose wisely and choose the ONE who loves you the most. Todd
