General Announcements
Tom Nicholas announced that December 4 was Hubie Fields’ 107th birthday! He established Pancake Day as a Rotary fundraiser during his presidential year (1961).
Doug Barry announced that Jim DeYoung lost his bet on the Ohio State-Michigan game,
so he had to wear an Ohio State hat at the meeting and make a $50
contribution to the Rotary Foundation. Ted Fink sent an e-mail with the current standings of the 3 Pancake Day ticket sales teams. Please turn money into Ted or to Bob Adams by Pancake Day to earn the Paul Harris Fellowship points.
Keith Basinger announced that the ham for Pancake Day was being delivered to the high school Thursday. Helpers are still needed to pick up and deliver the grills and set up on Friday.
Keith was going over to the high school after the meeting to check on things. Come early, stay late,
jump in wherever you’re needed on Pancake Day! Melinda Moore announced that the Highway Clean-Up is Thursday, December 12. Meet at the Toys R Us parking lot at 4:30!
Doug Barry had 2 more announcements: we will vote for officers at the December 18 meeting. A ballot was attached to the December 4 Cog Log and is attached to this Cog Log. Also, the Holiday Party will be held at Giuliano’s on Wednesday, December 18 starting at 5:30.

Downtown Miamisburg
Debbie McLaughlin introduced Bonnie Nolan, the outgoing president of the Miamisburg Merchants Association. Bonnie reviewed the MMA’s activities of the past several years. The association was formed 10 years ago by downtown businesspeople banding together, and Jan Runkle served as the first president. She laid a good deal of groundwork with the mayor, and the association started holding various events downtown to counterbalance the loss of retail to the Dayton Mall area. The events, like Thunderburg, Cruise the Burg, and the car shows, have been bringing people downtown for some years now. Some retail shops have been coming back in during the last 5 years or so, and they need to offer consistent access to their shops, which can be tricky during events. Katie Frank was hired to be the liaison between the city and the businesses shortly after the MMA hosted a speaker about Main Street communities. This initiative inspired the MMA to establish committees of members to address different needs. The Design Committee worked on the new bike racks in different shapes around town and has brought in different art events, such as the pop-up galleries and the Art in the Alley. They are also responsible for the bright green wayfinding signs to help visitors find parking. The Economic Development Committee helps businesses stay and grow in Miamisburg and keeps a wish list of what businesses would like to see downtown. They have also traveled with the mayor to see what lessons can be learned from Yellow Springs, brought in Dusty Hall from the Miami Conservancy District to talk about opportunities from our river access, and came up with the Explore Miamisburg web site (www.exploremiamisburg.com). The Promotions Committee also worked on that web site and other ways to get the word out about the downtown corridor and the various merchants. Several businesses have started in just the past few years and are thriving, like Little Shop of Stitches and Urban Loft Salon.

Phil Callahan ran a new segment of our meetings: Rotary Moment. A table will be called upon to answer a question that relates to Rotary. Any method of researching the answer during Happy Dollars is allowed, except for asking another table! Correct answers are rewarded with a free raffle ticket for every-one at the table, incorrect answers mean a $1 fine for everyone at the table. The December 4 question: Who are the 2 women who have served as Presi-dent of the Rotary Club of Miamisburg? Eric Cluxton and his table had one of the 2 names: Esther Philhower. The other woman was Becky Benna.
