RABBI’S REPORT
Congregation Shaaray Tefila is delighted to introduce our new Student Rabbi, Joey Glick, who began Zooming services with us in June! We are all eager to meet him in person as our regular synagogue services resume.
Joey Glick is a proud native of Pittsburgh, PA, an alum of Colorado College and the Graduate Theological Union, and a current 4th-year rabbinical student at Hebrew College. Before starting rabbinical school, Joey served as the
assistant chaplain and director of Jewish life at Vassar College. Joey is passionate about inter-religious dialogue, old time fiddle music, and his hometown Pittsburgh Pirates. Let’s all give Joey our great Shaaray Tefila welcome as he comes onboard.
Welcome Student Rabbi Joey!!
PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Thanks to our new student rabbi, Joey Glick,
for his enjoyable and interesting Zoom
Kabbalat Shabbat sessions on Friday
evenings at 6:30 PM. We plan to continue
these sessions on Zoom for now as they
provide an alternative service for those who
are not ready for in-person services and also
give Joey and the extended congregation a
chance to interact and experiment with
different forms of Jewish spiritual
community.
We were pleased to have a minyan for our
first live Saturday morning service, which
went smoothly and generated some lively
Torah discussion. Thanks to all for
following the rules and social distancing.
Thanks also to Betsey for putting up signs
and to Kristi for cleaning and disinfecting.
I found it ironic that the ribbon that we used
last year during high holidays to block off
2
seats and encourage people to sit closer
together is now being used to keep people
further apart. My hope is that, although we
are physically more distant, we remain close
together emotionally and spiritually and
continue to engage each other with prayer,
song and the exchange of ideas that Torah
can bring forth from us.
Thanks to Larry Greenburg, Peter Kudan
and Herb Levin for helping move furniture
on our lower level to make way for our new
tenants. BOCES has started their move and
will be officially here as of July 1. Please
refrain from using the basement facilities
unless absolutely necessary so as to
minimize disruption of their program and
facilities. Of course, our library remains
open and available to all congregants.
Dr. Mark Hoffman

SYNAGOGUE NEWS, ANNOUNCEMENTS &
IMPORTANT DATES
We welcome member articles and news to our
monthly Bulletin. We reserve the right to edit submissions for content and length. We reserve the right, at our discretion, to refuse to publish or remove any content we deem inappropriate.
The monthly due date is usually the third Thursday of each month. Please submit items to: [email protected]. Thanks!
HOUSE MANAGER’S REPORT
We have had several newsworthy items to
report on over the past several months.
We have finished replacing our inefficient
shul lighting with cost-saving LED lights.
3
We got an excellent discount on materials
and labor, and you will see a notable
difference when we return to normal
activities.
We will be renting our lower level to
BOCES in the coming year as a stream of
income and to make better use of our
beautiful facilities. Welcome BOCES!
Peter Kudan has volunteered to take over
several duties of building and property
management and has been a huge asset.
Thank you Peter!
We also had some tree damage at our
cemetery on May 29 as an F-1 Tornado hit
the area. We are coordinating with the
synagogue’s insurance and arranging for
tree clean-up and several headstone repairs.
We will keep you updated.

Cemetery Manager
JULY 2020
July greetings Everyone, First, we hope all members and friends of Sisterhood and both Congregations are well and safe during these stressful, changing times. Welcome to our new Student Rabbi, Joey Glick. We have had two wonderful Friday evening ZOOM services with our special new student Rabbi. We look forward to meeting Joey at shul. (Bonnie) Sisterhood extends condolences to the Goldstein and Sheerer Families on the passing of Scott Sheerer (Dora’s (of blessed memory) son, Rose and Libby’s nephew, Nancy & Jerry’s Cousin.) Welcome back to more returning Snowbirds! You were missed!
Happy 90th Birthday to Sandra Smith in Hilton Head, South Carolina! Saturday, June 20th was the first service since early March and it was held in the upstairs large sanctuary. Thank you to Dr. Mark Hoffman and Kristi for the preparations for our health and safety. Each of you stay safe and healthy this summer as more “openings” continue. Healthy, Happy 4th of July! Our best to each of you.

and prayers to the Goldstein and Sheerer families on the passing of Scott Scherer on June 17, 2020. Click here for obituary. May He who contains the Universe comfort you among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
JULY ONEGS & KIDDUSHES
No word yet when we will be able to resume gatherings, but watch for notices! We look forward to resuming our fellowship – how much more meaningful our meetings and refreshments together will be having been apart for so long!
Sponsoring an Oneg or Kiddush
When activities resume, consider sponsoring an Oneg or Kiddush to honor or remember your loved ones for their birthdays, wedding or bar/bat mitzvah, anniversaries and yahrzeits. Call the office at 518-792-4945 if you’d like to sponsor. Thanks for supporting Sisterhood, as we support you!
