PSLE – A Placement Examination

• Need to reflect the relative achievementlevel of pupils within National P6 cohort.

• Places pupils into different coursesaccording to their academic ability.

• Enables posting to secondary schools bymerit and as far as possible into a school of their choice.

Secondary Education

• Four to five years of secondary education with different curricular emphasis

• school curriculum

• Co-curricular Activities (CCAs) - sports and games or cultural activities

Express Course

• Four years• GCE ‘O’ Level at the end of 4th year. • Top 30% of PSLE cohort Higher MT.

- an A* grade in the MT Language - or at least a Merit in Higher MT

Normal (Academic) Course

• Four to five years

• GCE ‘N’ Level Exam at end of 4th year.

• Do well fifth year for GCE ‘O’ Level.

• Do not qualify technical-vocational education and training at Institute of Technical Education (ITE).

Normal (Technical) Course

• Four years

• English Language and Basic MT and a range of subjects.

• GCE ‘N’ Level at end of 4th year.

• Technical-vocational education at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE).

Integrated Programmes (IP)

– Up to 6 yrs

• Integrated secondary and JC education where secondary school students proceed to JC without taking the ‘O’ Level

Features of the New DSA-Sec Portal

1. Centralised online applications

– Applications will be centralised across all participating secondary schools

– You do not need to submit testimonials or hardcopy documents to the secondary school during application.

2. Application using Singpass

– Parents can access the Portal via their SingPass login. Approach the primary school for assistance.

3. No application fees

– No fees charged

4. Making choices in the DSA-Sec portal

– Up to three choices. For each choice, you will need to choose a secondary school and a talent area from that school.

– The order of the choices does not matter during application.

– Of the three choices, up to two choices may be used to apply to the same school, for two different talent areas of that school. This is to cater to your child’s multiple interests, and allow your child to choose different schools which can develop his/her strengths and interests.

What are schools looking for? DSA-SEC SELECTION

Talent, passion, commitment

• Schools may look at achievements and participation (e.g. in Junior Sports Academy).

• Schools may also conduct tests, trials or selection camps to identify students with strengths, or sound fundamentals and potential, in particular areas.

Strong personal qualities

• Schools may look at CCA records and VIA participation.

• Schools may also conduct interviews.

Good academic fit

• Schools may look at primary school results to ensure students can benefit from the school’s pace of learning.

Students, be sincere, be genuine, and be yourself –if you are a good fit for the school, it will show.

• The selection process differs across schools, and across different DSA-Seccategories.

• Generally, schools are looking for candidates with:

If my child have a DSA-Sec Confirmed Offer, does it mean that his/her PSLE results will not matter?

• Your child’s PSLE results will still be used to determine the secondary school course he/she is eligible for (i.e. Express, Normal (Academic), Normal (Technical))

• Even if he/she has a Confirmed Offer, he/she must qualify for a course offered by the school to be admitted to the DSA-Sec school.

• Posting is by MERIT, THEN CHOICE.

• Ranked by T Score.

• The top pupil will be considered for his choices first before the next pupil.

• Avoid skipping several steps at one time.

• Manage your time well

• Answer the right question. Break down long questions

• Highlight for keywords / numbers / information

• Keep track of your mistakes made during practice and check them during examinations.

• Check for errors in copying and transfer

• Check the units

• Check the calculations and do a REVERSE-CHECK. Put your answer back into the maths problem or equation to check.
