Objectives
• Reflect on mathematics teaching and learning habits
• Explore a new teacher resource• Analyze math practice standards in a
video
Math VisionYou should expect to see students working through partially
formed (or even incorrect) ideas about mathematics. They also
should expect to see teachers who are pushing their students
to think like mathematicians— to justify their ideas,
communicate with peers, and construct arguments, even if
those arguments lead to some interesting tangents. These are all
necessary steps for students to take as they develop enduring
understandings about mathematics.
The Right Equation for Math Teaching, Schifter and Granosky, 2012
Playing BasketballTreena won a 7-day trip worth 3600 AED to the Pro Shot
Basketball Camp. Round-trip travel expenses to the camp are
720 AED by air or 360 AED by another carrier. At the camp she
must choose between a week of individual instruction at 240
AED a day or a week of group instruction at 160 AED A day.
Treena's food and other expenses are fixed at 180 AED a day. If
she does not plan to spend any money other than the
trip amount won, what are all choices of travel and instruction
plans she could afford to make? Explain which option you think
Treena should select and why.
CCSS Standards for Mathematical Practice
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.3. Construct viable arguments and critique the
reasoning of others.4. Model with mathematics.5. Use appropriate tools strategically.6. Attend to precision.7. Look for and make use of structure.8. Look for and express regularity in repeated
reasoning.

Math Instruction that Supports the CCSS
Watch the video clip of a math classroom and look for evidence of how the teacher supports the development of the mathematical practices as well as evidence that the students display the practices.
1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of
others.4. Model with mathematics.5. Use appropriate tools strategically.6. Attend to precision.7. Look for and make use of structure.8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.
Table Talk After viewing the math video, discuss the following
questions: Which mathematical practices were observed?
