Welcome to Our Parish

Registering in a parish is a declaration of your desire to be a part of a Catholic community and a commitment to the life of the parish family. Being a registered parishion-er makes things easier when it is time for infant baptism, school registration, weddings, funerals, affidavits and when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor. We can only do this if you are a registered, active and contributing member in the parish. Please call, visit the office or go online to our website to register.

Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three

St. James the Apostle ~ Feast Day July 25

This James is the brother of John the Evangelist. The two were called by Jesus as they worked with their father in a fishing boat on the Sea of Galilee. Jesus had already called another pair of brothers from a simi-lar occupation: Peter and Andrew. “He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then He called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed Him” (Mark 1:19-20).

James was one of the favored three who had the privilege of witnessing the Transfiguration, the raising to life of the daughter of Jairus, and the agony in Gethsemani. Saint Matthew tells that their mother came—

Mark says it was the brothers themselves—to ask that they have the seats of honor in the Kingdom. “Jesus said in re-ply, ‘You do not know what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am going to drink?’ They said to Him, ‘We can’” (Matthew 20:22). Jesus then told them that they would share His pain and death, but sitting at His right hand or left was not His to give. The other disciples became indignant. Then Jesus taught them all the lesson of humble service: The purpose of authority is to serve. They are not to impose their will on others, or lord it over them. This is the position of Jesus Himself. He was the servant of all; the service imposed on Him was the supreme sacrifice of His own life.

James was apparently the first of the apostles to be martyred. (Acts 12:1-3).This James, sometimes called James the Greater, is not to be confused with James the Lesser or with the author of the Letter of James and the leader of the Je-rusalem community. ~franciscanmedia.org

National Needs Combined Collection Black and Indian Missions

Catholic University of America Catholic Communications Campaign

Catholic Home Missions Appeal July 21 & 22

Each parish is part of the Church Uni-versal; it is the Catholic Church in a particular place. The bishops of the United States created the national collec-tions so that, by combining resources, we can more ef-fectively carry out our mission as Catholics.

The bishops encourage us to view the national collec-tions in the light of stewardship and of sharing. God has given us our light and our prosperity, all we need and more. It is right and just that we give something back through these collections, helping people in our own country and around the world to live better and to grow in the love of Jesus.

The National Black and Indian Missions Collection, mandated by the III Plenary Council in 1884, embodies the Church’s concern for evangelizing Black, American Indian, Eskimo and Aleut peoples in the United States. These needs exist throughout the country. Each year, bishops appeal for help in the great and growing task of parish evangelization. The collection is needed now more than ever.

The Catholic University of America (CUA), located in Washington, D.C., is the national university of the Catho-lic Church. Founded in 1887, CUA offers students an excellent education in a faith-filled atmosphere that is grounded in the Catholic intellectual tradition. The Col-lection for The Catholic University of America under-writes scholarships to assist financially deserving stu-dents in completing their education at CUA in over 50 disciplines.

The Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC) devel-ops media programming, projects, and resources that promote Gospel values. Fifty percent of the collection supports local communication efforts such as televised Masses and diocesan newspapers. The other 50 percent supports the production of national media programming that offers a slice of Catholic life in the United States. The Catholic Communication Campaign is “How the Good News Gets Around!”

The Catholic Home Missions Appeal (CHMA) helps Catholic communities across America survive and thrive by underwriting evangelization, religious education, edu-cation for future priests, training for lay ministers, and poor parishes that would have to close their doors with-out outside help. There are many places right here in the United States and in its overseas dependencies where the Church is poor, communities are scattered, and priests are few. The CHMA helps strengthen the Catho-lic Church in America.

Keys We are in the process of re-keying the entire parish and school. This process will take

several weeks. If you need a key after the change has been made, come by the office to sign one out.

Tweet From Pope Francis Try reading the Gospel for at least five minutes every day. You will see how it changes your life. 7/15

Mission Cooperative Plan Appeal July 28-29

The Mission Office of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles accepts requests from Mission Dioceses and Religious Orders working in the missions to preach at a parish for the purpose of making an appeal for financial support. Dioceses and Religious Orders are encouraged to partici-pate in the Mission Cooperative Plan (MCP) on an annual basis.

Fr. Frank Tinajero, SVD is a member of the Society of the Divine Word. Born and raised in East Los Angeles, he attended the local Catholic schools in that area prior to entering the seminary. Fr. Tinajero has been a priest for thirty years. Given his background training in spirituality and counseling, he has specialized in detention ministry for many years while serving as a chaplain at several Federal penitentiaries. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Center For Restorative Justice Works. He also assists the California Conference of Catholic Bishops for the Office of Detention Ministry. Fr. Frank Tinajero presently lives with his religious community at their Divine Word Residence in Los Angeles while helping various parishes in the area in pastoral ministry.

Faith Formation News Society of St. Vincent de Paul Assumption Conference

Zealous, Yet Humble

I recently had a long-awaited vacation. I travelled to the mountains with my wife and

son - a reunion of sorts. It’s hard to believe our son has been gone for eight years, having left for college and his first tour of duty in the Army.

We finished our vacation in San Francisco. There, once again, I was confronted by the “polish and grit” of the city; and was taken right back to the situational awareness that I had been immersed in as a Vincentian, for the past two and a half years. I wondered how we managed to serve and grow in the manner that our Conference has since our inception. Many thoughts and feelings raced through my mind, and what had become relaxed was now a maelstrom of emotion. I cleared my mind by writ-ing down some of those feelings, as I looked out from my open window onto Columbus Ave., spying upon the needy and the poor. A poem of sorts - to our Conference:

Silken hair, spun from diamonds, softens the most cal-loused of hearts Crestfallen eyes, made so by tears of worry and fret Your life is a composition, comprised of a Thousand notes… … …Followed by a Thousand, intimate details

If I should spend the rest of my life reading your Tea Leaves I would never truly come to know your Mystery

In the Land of Sun and Moon You travel across the desert, searching for the unseen Coming to know many desperate pleasures and miseries

You grasp at sand, and wonder out loud… You confront the clamor of clanging cymbals and clash-ing swords… While others deceive, you speak truthfully… When others retreat, you march forward

If the Sun should descend, burning away your useful ser-vitude, reducing all to fire and dust… Let my Last words to each of you be these: May your Goodness be eternal And may your Joy live forever

Thank you, Assumption-BVM Conference, for your ser-vice to God, Church, and Community. ~Robert Wyatt

DID YOU KNOW? Cell phone snapshots may not be so innocent Nearly everyone has a cell phone and that may be great for communication and connection, but it also gives rise to concerns about who may be taking photos of you or your children without your knowledge. You can’t police the behaviors of others around you, but you can avoid taking pictures of your own children in public, and posting photos online that give away the loca-tions of your favorite parks and hangouts. If your children have phones, monitor the photos they are taking and sharing, too.
