Welcome! The Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla (BUAP), amongst the best public universities of Mexico, impels the renovation of academic life with activities of teaching, research and extension. With an efficient administration, a result of a profound process of transformation and

modernization, this house of studies counts with a broad educational offer, high quality masters and prestigious researchers. Moreover our institution has shown a great capacity to obtain special funds with the objective to improve its infrastructure, the undertaking of various projects and the development of research. With pride in our history, we construct every day a “university with vision”, with the objective to consolidate an institution of higher education of top quality, proven by the academic prizes and acknowledgements granted to the university, such as the most recent award of the Secretary of Public Education-ANUIES. The improvement of academic quality is a constant objective in our educational task and with this idea we work every day to maintain and increase today’s level: a great university, with an academic leading position and great engagement in society. Its successes and transformations have placed the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla amongst the most recognized higher education institutions in the country. One of the most relevant aspects with high priority at this time, is the internationalization of academic life. Responsible for this process is the Dirección General de Relaciones Internacionales e Intercambio Académico (DGRIIA) [General Direction of International Relations and Academic Exchange (GDIRAE)]. The GDIRAE foments and guides this process of internationalization and offers its academic community and its visitors a package of policies and actions that promotes a better use of the possibilities available for higher education. Final I invite you to keep yourself updated by means of this webpage; to get inform and to take advantage of the activities made possible by cooperation and institutional relations, on a national as well as on an international level.

The City of Puebla

The City of Puebla is located at 100 kilometers to the southeast of the capital of the country and is the capital of the state of Puebla. The city was founded by the Spaniards in 1531 and transformed quickly in one of the most important cities of New Spain. Although Puebla is a modern city, its historical centre remains a historical monument for its architecture, urbanization and European influenced art of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. The city has one of the best preserved historical centers of the country, declared Cultural Patrimony of Humanity by UNESCO in 1987. Puebla counts with a temperate climate almost all year round (the average temperature is between 20°C and 30°C). The city is characterized by charming and well educated people, and a delicious regional kitchen. Puebla is the perfect place to study. Its industry has developed at a high pace, above all the chemical, metal chemical and automobile branches. The industrial sector of Puebla nowadays contributes a 3.3% to the Gross Domestic Product. Thanks to its geographical position and commercial weight, Puebla is known as the “Door to the South”.

The Zócalo. One of the first places in the 16th century designed by the Spaniards. Made up by beautiful gardens and ancient trees, it’s considered as one of the most splendid market places of Mexico, with a colonial fountain constructed in 1777. The Cathedral. Its construction was initiated on November 1575, as a consequence of orders of King Philip II. In 1634, John Gómez of Trasmonte adapted the original project to finish it. The operation of his plan started in 1640 with the arrival of Bishop John of Palafox and Mendoza at the City of Puebla. It’s a real jewel of architecture. Its towers of 69.36 meters are the tallest of the country. The Amparo Museum. It was inaugurated on the 28th February, 1991. Nowadays it finds itself amongst the most important museums of Latin America. The museum holds important pieces from pre-Spanish times up to contemporary art. It also offers a bibliographical area supporting research.

El Callejón de los Sapos (The Alley of Toads). In the colonial age this place was surrounded by tannery, traditional meat shops and mills that made use of de current of the river Saint Francis; the stagnation of water served as habitat for toads and frogs. For that reason the popular place is called as it is. Every weekend the place is transformed into a market place. It houses antiques and traditional and modern artisanal products. Here you find also various bars that give the place a quiet atmosphere at daytime but lively during the night. Handcraft Market “El Parián”. In 1796 a small market for retail traders was built a few blocks from the Zócalo in the San Roque neighborhood. In the same place now stands El Parián, whose buildings contain brickwork with tiling of the talavera style, for which Puebla is famous. This market is full of color and there’s a lot to buy: talavera and onyx, traditional sweets, clothing and embroidery, glass, pottery and basket work among other handcrafts. Adjacent to the market in the Artist’s Quarter (“Barrio del Artista”) are the workshops of various painters and bars where you can hear jazz or “trova” (folk music). Cholula. Puebla’s neighboring town was a very important pre-Hispanic ceremonial and commercial centre. Here, the “Cholutecas”- an indigenous people formed by the fusion of Toltec, Chichimec and other groups - were defeated by Cortes, the Spanish conquistador, on his way to the city of Tenochtitlán (the Aztec capital). The pyramid at Cholula has a base of 450 meters per side, which makes it the biggest pyramid in the world in terms of base area. In addition to its history and culture, Cholula offers a great nightlife. There are many bars and clubs in the city and along the Puebla-Cholula road, which is called “recta a Cholula”. Entertainment and Cultural Events. Besides the already mentioned attractions and the cultural program of the university, Puebla counts with a lot of museums where you can learn about Mexico´s history and culture. There are also a considerable number of spaces for entertainment and places for social and cultural activities. The Teatro Principal and the Teatro de la Ciudad perform international plays and the Casa de la Cultura organizes exhibitions, while its Cine Luis Buñuel shows international and artistic films. The Museo Amparo, the Museo Universitario, the Museo Virreinal, the Museo de la Revolución Mexicana, and the Museo Nacional de los Ferrocarriles Mexicanos offer a lot of opportunities to learn and to be informed. Cultural events such as music, dance, literature and belle arts are presented frequently at the Palacio Municipal and at the Centro de Convenciones. Each year, the city organizes the Festival Internacional de Puebla that lasts over a week and offers a vast program of cultural events. There are different shopping centers such as Plaza Dorada, Plaza Cristal, la Noria and Angelópolis, which are perfect places to spend an afternoon every now and then. Inside or outside these plazas you will find cinemas, bowling, mini-golf, ice-skating and other attractions. One should not forget that

Puebla’s soccer team plays in a stadium with a capacity of 35,000 spectators. A visit to Los Fuertes, where the Battle of Puebla took place and to the Planetario is a must, as well as a visit to Africam Safari, the zoo that is located a few miles away from the city. How to get to Puebla

On arrival at Mexico City airport it is very easy to find transport to Puebla. There are express buses that get here in 2 hours time. Their ticket stand is located in the same floor as the international departures’ lounge (above international arrivals). The ticket costs around $150.00 pesos and the buses run from 6:00 hrs. to 22:00 hrs. There are two possible destinations in Puebla - the CAPU central bus station or the Estrella Roja station in 4 Poniente – but both are only a few minutes from the centre by taxi. From the CAPU we recommend that you only use “authorized” taxis. Puebla also has a regional airport with connections to U.S. cities.

The University

The origins of the University of Puebla go back to 1578 - when the Jesuits initiated educational projects in Puebla - and 1587 when the Colegio del Espíritu Santo was founded. Since then the university has adopted different names in response to national political changes and religious affiliation. It finally became the Autonomous University of Puebla in 1956. Today it’s one of the most important higher education institutions in the south of Mexico. The University offers high quality teaching and a wide range of courses and degree programs. It also carries out cutting edge research in a variety of academic fields. In 1987, the State Congress conferred it the title of Benemérita, which was incorporated to its official name in 1992.

In 2007, a total of 40,689 students were registered in bachelor degrees in the University of Puebla and 2,115 in postgraduate degrees programs. During 1999-2007, it expanded the number of course options to a total of 61 bachelor, 48 master and 13 doctorate programs. We have 2,107 full time academic staff and almost 270 researchers members of the “Sistema Nacional de Investigadores” (National System of Researches). With these, the University of Puebla offers courses in almost all known academic fields and continues to be the principle research institution outside Mexico City.

Information on Urban Transport

Mexico has a local transport system very different from most European and North-American countries. There is no central administration of the (micro) busses. The routes are independent and even within a route (micro) busses are owned by various persons. For this reason it’s impossible to buy a ticket outside the (micro) bus. You have to pay directly to the bus driver. Schedules or route maps don’t exist. But don’t worry; you will obtain quickly knowledge of the routes you take on a daily basis. Every 15 minutes (micro) busses will pass. Public transport within the city of Puebla costs $5.00 pesos. To take a microbus, study the following indications:

- Stand at the end of the street, on the right side - Put your hand in a horizontal direction to the street.

- Inform the Office of the General Attorney about the date on which you will

leave the country, to cancel your FM3 (some 20 days before leaving the country on a definite basis).

General tips:

- We recommend you to read a little about the country to understand the social, economical and political situation; by way of local newspapers (el Sol de Puebla, el Síntesis, el Universal), national newspapers (La Jornada, El Universal, Excelsior, El Heraldo, Uno más Uno, El Financiero, El Sol de México, La Opinión, Milenio, etc) and literature (Octavio Paz, Carlos Fuentes, Elena Poniatowska, Juan Rulfo, José Revueltas, José Emilio Pacheco, Ibargüengoitia, Antonio Yáñez, etc.);

We remind you that a(n) (student) exchange is an experience in a region or country with a different culture and habits, which aren’t better or worse than those of your country. Please be open-minded and avoid judgment. Talk about your doubts with us or fellow students from the country. This will help you to understand the way Mexico functions.
