Remember the community Dinner for Christmas, it is very important that you sign up for the dinner as if you are not signed up, you may not have a seat, as per fire dept. the hall can only handle so many residents, and we don’t want you to miss out on a fun evening. I want to thank all of you, that wished me well… it was a tough couple of months and your thoughts and prayers, cards, phone calls, visits to the office, food, plants, and sweets were all welcomed. You are all the best residents and you made me feel so loved. We have several new residents and we welcome each and every one of them, so if you see some one out and about and you don’t recognize them, stop and say hi, or a new neighbor, go next door and introduce yourself. We at Winward Lakes and Steiner Communities want to wish you all Happy, Happy Holidays. Please be careful as you are out and about, we want you back safe and sound. Please let the office know when you are leaving or if you have guests coming. This really helps the office, if mail man asks or a neighbor wonders if you are ok, because No one has seen you. Again Happy Holidays,

The History of Christmas Trees
The evergreen fir tree has traditionally been used to
celebrate winter festivals (pagan and Christian) for
thousands of years. Pagans used branches of it to
decorate their homes during the winter solstice, as it
made them think of the spring to come. The Romans
used Fir Trees to decorate their temples at the festival
of Saturnalia. Christians use it as a sign of everlasting
life with God.
Nobody is really sure when Fir trees were first used as
Christmas trees. It probably began about 1000 years
ago in Northern Europe. Many early Christmas Trees
seem to have been hung upside down from the ceiling
using chains (hung from chandeliers/lighting hooks).
Other early Christmas Trees, across many parts of
northern Europe, were cherry or hawthorn plants (or a
branch of the plant) that were put into pots and
brought inside so they would hopefully flower at
Christmas time. If you couldn't afford a real plant,
people made pyramids of woods and they were
decorated to look like a tree with paper, apples and
candles. Sometimes they were carried around from
house to house, rather than being displayed in a home.
The celebration honors African heritage in African-American culture,
and is observed from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a
feast and gift-giving. Kwanzaa has seven core principles (Nguzo
Saba). It was created by Maulana Karenga and was first celebrated in
1966–67.
Celebrations:Unity; Creativity; Faith; Giving gifts

The eight-day Jewish celebration known as Hanukkah or Chanukah
commemorates the rededication during the second century B.C. of the
Second Temple in Jerusalem, where according to legend Jews had
risen up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean
Revolt.
Hanukkah 2016 begins in the evening of
Saturday, December 24.
and ends in the evening of Sunday, January 1.

The attack on Pearl Harbor
On Sunday morning, December 7, 1941, the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service attacked Naval Station Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii, without warning and without a declaration of war, killing 2,403 American non-combatants, and injuring 1,178 others. The attack sank two U.S. Navy battleships and damaged five others. It also damaged three cruisers, three destroyers, and one minelayer. Aircraft losses were 188 destroyed and 159 damaged.
Remembrance Day or Pearl Harbor Day, is observed annually in the United States on December 7, to remember and honor the 2,403 citizens of the United States who were killed in the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii on December 7, 1941.
On August 23, 1994, the United States Congress, designated December 7 of each year as National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. On Pearl Harbor Day, the American flag should be flown at half-staff until sunset to honor those who died as a result of the attack on U.S. Military and naval forces in Hawaii.
Aftermath
Canada declared war on Japan within hours of the attack on Pearl Harbor,
] the first Western nation to do so. On December 8, the United States
declared war on Japan and entered World War II on the side of the Allies. In a speech to Congress, President Franklin D. Roosevelt called the bombing of
Pearl Harbor "a date which will live in infamy."
Pearl Harbor tributes
In 1990, leading up to the 50th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Congress established the Pearl Harbor Commemorative Medal. This is also known as the Pearl Harbor Survivor's medal and was awarded to anyone who was in the U.S. Armed Forces and who was present in Hawaii on December 7, 1941 and participated in combat operations that day against the attack. The medal was also awarded to civilians who were killed or injured in the attack. A few years later, Congress amended the law to allow any person who was present in Hawaii on December 7, 1941 and was involved in combat operations against Japanese military forces attacking Hawaii to receive the award

DECEMBER Fun Facts About the holidays
In America, Santa visits each house to fill STOCKINGS with trinkets. In other countries, gifts are hidden in children’s shoes. HOLLY was believed to keep evil spirits away and to protect a home from lightning. Louis Prian, an early master of color printing, marketed the first line of American Christmas CARDS in 1875. The Aztecs boiled POINSETTIA leaves to make a purplish-red dye and used the milk from the plants stem as a fever reducer. In the 17
th century, the making of GINGERBREAD was considered to be such an art
form in Germany that the city of Nuremberg created a guild for the bakers of lebkuchen (a type of gingerbread). Guild members were the only people in the city legally permitted to bake it. Unusual Holidays in December 2

The Lighter Side of Aging Know how to prevent sagging? Just eat until the wrinkles fill out. It’s scary when you start making the same noises as your coffeemaker. These days about half the stuff in my shopping cart says, “For Fast Relief.” Don’t let aging get you down … it’s too hard to get back up.
Just a Reminder
Please be considerate of your neighbors.
Remember that you may enjoy the music
you’re listening to, but chances are your
neighbors really could do without the noise.
Sound travels throughout the community and
right into your neighbor’s home. Please play
your music at a reasonable volume. So please
have your guests and having wonderful
evenings with family, but please consider the
noise.
Thank You
