Greetings from the Lifestyle Team

G’day and welcome to Embracia Moonee Valley’s Australia Day newsletter. During this time of year, namely on the 26th of January, it’s a day to reflect on what it is to be Australian, to celebrate modern Australia and to acknowledge our history. Australia Day is a time to commemorate the founding of the colony of New South Wales in 1788. It is also a time to celebrate our cultural differences because it is what has shaped our contemporary Australia and has given our lovely country a distinct identity.

Throughout the later part of January there were a vast range of Australia Day themed activities. A variety of High Teas, Dance Socials, Men’s Group reminiscing about ‘Living in Australia’, Happy Hour with Aboriginal Didgeridoo music, Aboriginal Dot art for craft, bus outings to the land mark Queen’s Park in Moonee Ponds and entertainment from the MCGI Youth Group – ‘Members of Church of God International’.

On the 25th of January the first Residents’ Australia Day Barbecue was held in the Carbine Café and outdoors area. It was a fantastic day where residents had the opportunity to catch up with friends and meet newer residents. There was dancing and grooving with our entertainer of the day, Michael our PCA staff member, who sang some Australian favourites. Thank you Michael for volunteering on the day.

Towards the end of February and March there will be Easter oriented activities. During March 17th -25th our cultural diversity at Embracia will be celebrated during ‘Cultural Diversity’ week with many fun- filled activities. On February the 21st Sebastiano from free service Patronato Ital Uil Service will be running a seminar from 2-3.00pm in the Activity Room. This is a service for people of Italian origin and other European countries, who can claim pension rights (Age, Disability and Survivors) under law and regulations of Italian National Insurance and Social Welfare. Please feel free to attend and have your questions answered. This will be an ongoing fortnightly free service.

January Lifestyle Events

On the 25th of January, Embracia held its first Residents’ Australia Day barbecue. It was a lovely day and Residents sat in the Carbine Café or outdoors enjoying each other’s company. The weather was fantastic, the food cooked by the Lifestyle and Kitchen staff was aromatic. Who doesn’t enjoy the great Aussie Barbie! Residents were entertained, Karaoke style, by Embracia PCA Michael. Some residents even felt the urge to get up and dance. In the upcoming months we plan to continue our commitment to providing quality of life to our Residents with more barbecues and picnics.

January-February Lifestyle Events

There have been a selection of memorable activities scheduled at Embracia Moonee Valley. Mid-January 2018 to mid-February 2018 has been no exception.

High Tea celebrating the impending Valentine’s Day was enjoyed by our ladies. It was an opportunity to enjoy each other’s company while listening to their favourite artists of yesteryear, such as Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra. Karakoe style entertainment was also performed by the MCGI Youth Group in late January. It allowed both generations to interact with each other and enjoy each other’s company in a musical entertainment setting. This will be an ongoing monthly event.

The Embracia cooking group mastered making the Pope’s Valentine cookies. Residents took turns adding the ingredients, shaping the biscuits in a shape of their liking and

colouring them with pink icing sugar after they were cooked. The sweet smell of Valentine cookie love aroma filled the air! Cooking activities allow residents to maintain a cucina tradition, use their fine motor skills, converse with others, share their thoughts and memories and create new fond memories. Even Penelope’s 3 year old great granddaughter Artemis joined in the fun.

Our lovely volunteer ladies from our local churches have returned for church services and communion. Residents were thrilled that Assunta from St. Christopher’s had re-commenced the Friday morning communions. Her return was much anticipated. Margaret and Sister Chris from St. Martin’s De Porres will be returning to Embracia later in February. Furthermore, there will be monthly Greek Orthodox Church Services in the Chapel with Father Constantine from the Parish of Panagia Soumela in East Keilor.

The National Victorian Gallery held its second presentation with volunteer Jan. It was on ‘Marvellous Melbourne’; looking at the history of Melbourne through Australian art. Residents recognised parts of Melbourne, where they worked, commuted, lived and were able to share stories and reminisce about their lives. There was a Q & A session at the end of the presentation. It was very informative and enjoyed by all who attended.

Embracia’s Eden Philosophy is to provide a great human experience for our residents. To combat the potential ‘3 plagues’ of an older person’s existence. Namely, to overcome Loneliness, Helplessness and Boredom by providing a social environment that values the human spirit. It is of paramount importance to the Lifestyle Team to offer our residents activities of choice and interest to them to enable choices as per person centred approach and also to be culturally sensitive to everyone’s needs. Lifestyle staff aim to provide quality of life to our Residents by offering a variety of activities to cater to Residents interests and wants.

We are pleased to inform you that Dementia Australia will deliver a session “Introduction to Dementia and Services for the Family” at Embracia Moonee Valley on Tuesday 27th February 2018 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM in the Activity Room. Refreshments will be provided. Please confirm with Catherine in the Reception if you are able to attend as soon as possible as there are limited numbers available.

We always appreciate feedback to further improve our service delivery. Compliments, Complaints, Suggestion forms are available in the foyer. You may either hand it in person to Management or lodge the completed form in the locked box in the foyer. If you wish to speak to us please let us know and we can arrange a day that suits you.

Hairdressing services are provided every Thursday and payment can be made directly to the hairdresser on the day. You can also arrange a direct debit service with the hairdresser if you wish. Please let the staff know if

your loved ones require the service so they can be entered in the Hairdressing book located in the foyer.

There is a Pharmacy Box installed on the ground floor just outside the lift. You may lodge payment or any queries you may have in relation to your

invoices directly to the Pharmacist in this box. We would like our families who visit during meal times especially in the

evenings to be mindful of the effect of large number of people in the dining area especially in our Memory Support Households. The residents will find the extra noise and movements especially when there are young children running around and unfamiliar faces quite distressing. You may take your loved ones to the café and enjoy your quality time with them

there instead. A gentle reminder to residents and families to please send clothing items to laundry staff for labelling first before use or putting them away in wardrobes.

INTRODUCING STAFF MEMBER KARINA

I grew up in Point Cook and lived there until I was 18. I moved to the USA to play college level basketball. I lived in Texas for 2 years and in Alabama for another 2

years. I am single and very close to my two sisters.

I’ve worked for Embracia in the past at their other aged care homes and thoroughly enjoyed working there. I decided to work at Embracia Moonee Valley full-

time. I love interacting with the Residents and Staff here. I am very committed to the overall wellbeing of the residents.

My hobbies are basketball, netball, watching movies, music and hiking. I do little hikes - about two hours.

My pet hates are I dislike rude people and negativity. Oh….also bad drivers!

Something we don’t know about you-

I have a sweet tooth and really enjoy ice-cream especially caramel and honey comb flavours.
