Message from the Founders

Peter & Dawn MacKenzie

When I came to Embracia in Glasshouse Country to submit my ACAT Application, I opened the door and a “voice” from somewhere said to me, “Stan, you will be very happy here.” Before I was taken on a tour of inspection by the Director of Care, Suzanne, everything was explained to me in full detail regarding Bonds, financial arrangements etc. In fact, all you have to do is ask any one of the various office position managers and they can and will gladly fix it for you without delay.

The first thing to draw my attention was the effect of how everything came together to make you feel as if this is somewhere you could spend the rest of your time. From the merging of the old with the new, the atmosphere, cleanliness, attention to detail and how you were greeted by everyone including the lay out and detail in the rooms.

My life changed forever when I heard those magic words, “We have a vacancy, do you wish to take it?” From the top echelon of management to the ground level of staff, I have been treated with the utmost of respect, kindness and willingness to help in anything and in any way that I have requested. I have not heard one bad word, grumble or poor attention, no matter how busy staff are. Their manner and approach are without doubt top shelf. To me, there are many times the

staff go way above and beyond the call of duty and still find time to smile and laugh.

All the staff are loved as much as we, the residents, are loved and that’s what makes Embracia such a wonderful place to live and call home.

Medication is strictly controlled by the fully trained Nursing Staff, but flexible under certain conditions. There are certain rules but certainly for the benefit and the safety of the residents.I have only been at Embracia for 12 weeks and that has been the best 12 weeks of my life since my beloved wife, Jean, passed away.

I have left the top level of management until last as without them being what they are and doing the job so well, the way they do it, Embracia would not be the wonderful place that it has become and has won all the awards they so rightly deserve.

Now I think I will go and find my old mate Arthur and go and have a cuppa and a bikkie and a bit of a chat and watch our new orchid green house taking shape.

Stan Miles, Coochin HouseholdEmbracia in Glasshouse Country Beerwah.

P.S. After I had signed this letter I realised I made a very important mistake. I had not paid tribute to

the Friends of Eden. They are a group of volunteers who help the carers in so many ways with the residents who would take up so much of their precious time, like when we go on outings, bus trips, concerts, exercises, fun games, reading to the nearly blind. So many small ways but mean so much to us, running raffles, making cakes, selling tickets etc. When I first came to Embracia I thought, gee we get a lot of visitors, now I know why.

I now know what that voice meant when I opened the door to Embracia. Yes, I am well and truly happy now and I do call Embracia Home.

Olympic Opening CeremonyBy Jenni Crapper, Lifestyle Coordinator

Embracia on Ashley had lots of fun and games at our opening Olympic ceremony. Staff and residents dressed up in green and gold and did a wonderful job presenting the true Aussie Olympic spirit. We even had a unique Olympic mascot as you can see by the photos. Peter, one of our residents felt proud to be asked to take part in the ceremony by being our torch bearer. Staff got in on the act with an egg and spoon race and residents showed their determination to win a gold medal in the discus event. Colourful decorations were made by our residents to complete the atmosphere.

To celebrate the games we finished up with drinks and nibbles. Graham who is a volunteer played some of the residents favourite Aussie songs on the piano. Aussie Aussie Aussie oih oih oih!!!

After seeing an advertisement on television for the Smith Family, residents were asked if they would like to sponsor a child within Australia. Our residents at Embracia on Ashley thought it was a lovely idea and were eager to find out what we could do.

We contacted the Smith family charity and arranged for some brochures to be sent out. From this we found that sponsorship provides financial assistance to help the students families afford essential school items such as a complete uniform, excursions, text books and course materials. With these essentials covered, students can fit in and engage fully with their education. Staff and residents joined together donating gold coins to raise our sponsorship. Everyone patiently waited for some news on our newest and youngest member of the clan, and were delighted to receive some written words from our new

“daughter” Patricia and her father. We are looking forward to more progress reports and enjoying the satisfaction that helping others brings.

It has been a very interesting time at Embracia in Templestowe with our renovations well under way and the end results in sight. The residents have been wonderful improvising and changing locations with the renovations and have still been able to enjoy all our activities. They are all very excited to see our finished Café, Hairdressers Salon, just to mention a few...

We had exciting and memorable outings recently with Jim Cummane (volunteer) and Sue (Lifestyle) taking four residents to Ethihad Stadium where they were treated like royalty in the Members section. Rita, 104 years young and is a one eyed Geelong supporter, talked about the wonderful day for weeks.

We travelled to a beautiful 150 year old hotel in Panton Hill where we sat around an open fire and enjoyed a old fashioned pub lunch. Many a memory was talked about with lots of laughs between us all.

Christmas in July was celebrated with a fantastic lunch provided by our new kitchen team who all did a wonderful job. A big thank you to all!

We are now having our Embracia Olympics where daily events are being held. Our opening ceremony was a lot of fun with residents, families and staff attending.

Rita is at this time our progressive winner as she has now won three events. If Rita can do this at 104 we wonder what she could have achieved years ago.

Our closing ceremony had finger foods from the countries of our residents.

Embracia on Bribie Retirement Village Exercise ProgramBy Rita Bourke, Resident, Embracia on Bribie Retirement Village

At Embracia on Bribie Retirement Village we have a group of residents whose aim is to stay fit and healthy. At the end of Summer when our water aerobics has finished, many of the participants expressed a wish to keep up our fitness level during the Winter months.Rita, with the help of Janice, Moira, Joan, Audrey and Hazel arranged a series of gentle exercises which we then set to music. Margaret, our Village Manager, assisted by putting the music in order on a CD and setting out directions for the exercises on “easy to read” sheets. We gathered our resources of weights (rice in socks), noodles and balls and we were ready for action.

So each morning Monday to Saturday we meet at 7.30am in the Clubhouse to spend 40 minutes gently moving our joints, working on our breathing techniques, stretching our muscles, sharpening our eye-hand coordination, reflexes and improving our balance. Numbers vary each morning depending on other commitments but 16 of our residents have benefited from the program so far.

Our exercises are usually accompanied by laughter especially during the ball handling segment. The exercises are varied and participants do as much or as little as they wish. We hope this program helps all of us stay active as long as possible. In the process we are all having a lot of fun and it’s a great way to start the day!

From Small Things - Big Things GrowBy Sally Harris, Senior Administration Assistant

Embracia has a great student program that has significantly grown since it first started in 2008. Given the success of the program, Embracia was invited to present at the Better Practice 2012 seminar which was held in Adelaide.

Vicki Colyer (Student Development Manager) presented the program to the Better Practice audience explaining all about Embracia’s successful student program. The title of the presentation “From small things- big things grow” explained that you can start small, and with

innovation and hard work, you can reap the rewards.

The student program has seen great success as Embracia has expanded it to all six Victorian homes, has enrolled more than five hundred students and has seen students become staff members. Embracia will soon work closely with a Chinese college to introduce this fantastic program to a College in China!

The presentation captured the audience with many attendees interested in knowing more about Embracia and our program. Embracia would like to thank all of our staff and students that make this the great program that it is!

Well done Vicki for your fantastic presentation!

100 Years Young!By Trina Haylock, Lifestyle Coordinator

On 22nd July 2012, Toni Wood celebrated her 100th birthday in style with family, friends, fellow residents, staff and volunteers at Embracia in Glasshouse Country. The Glasshouse Country Baptist Church played beautiful music from the 1920’s in the background setting the scene for Toni’s special day.

A spectacular High Tea with all the trimmings was laid out beautifully by staff and volunteers who gave their time freely to celebrate with this amazing lady.

Toni is very active at 100 years old, she attends all of our activities including Bowls, Art, Craft, Bus Trips, Church, Bingo, Exercise and Laughter Classes, Quizzes and more. In fact if there is something going on you will find Toni right there in the thick of it. To this day, Toni is still able to touch her toes. When we asked her the secret to long life Toni said “It’s to not worry about anything, especially the things you can’t change.” What great wisdom from this very special lady.

Here at Embracia on the Peninsula we witnessed something very special when Ted Heath the magician came in for respite care. For the enjoyment of others, Ted put on a magic show for residents and staff.

Ted, who is 87 years young, started doing magic tricks when he was at school. He turned professional at the age of 22. He has continued performing magic and making people laugh ever since.

During his performances his magic word was “sausages”. He became well known for this, and his stage name then became “Professor Sausages”.

During the show you could see residents and the staff faces looking on in wonder and awe.Ted is a born entertainer who had his audience captivated when he was performing.

With loads of humour and audience participation the performance was a great success. During the show there was much laughing and cheering from the crowd.

Ted has many strings to his bow. During the show he told some very funny stories, with the audience cracking up laughing at the punch line. What a showman!

Ted has many talents and not only is he booking in a bigger magic show, with many props, but has a passion for painting in oils. He has also published his own autobiography. He is going to share this with residents and staff and have an arts display.

On my return from holidays I was welcomed back to Embracia on Bribie with a lovely surprise. Melva, who spends her spare time keeping her mind active and her hands nimble, presented me with a gift. Lifestyle gave Melva some long forgotten tapestries found whilst cleaning out the craft cupboard. Whilst in hospital Melva

completed one of the tapestries in long stitch, the picture is of a cottage, rolling hills and flowers as far as the eye can see. Melva gave me the tapestry to say thank you for keeping her busy with what she loves to do best. It hangs with pride in the lifestyle office. Melva also donated another of her beautiful tapestries of Rosella Birds to her community named “Rosella”.

Edna attended Melbourne High School and enjoyed school so much, she went on to become a Primary School teacher for 45 years. Edna said she taught all the basic subjects, even swimming and tennis!

Edna married Irwin Brownfield but had no children of their own, however is a wonderful Aunt to Ian Beckerleg and his family.

Edna loved to go for drives in her beloved Valliant and enjoyed traveling with her sister Joyce, on The Ghan. Her favourite holiday spot is Cairns, which she longs to visit again.Edna’s most prized possession is a letter from the Queen, which she received for her 100th birthday. Every day Edna likes to read the Herald Sun newspaper, complete the daily crossword and also regularly participates in our exercise programs.

Most recently Edna won a bronze medal in our Olympic Games Discus (Frisbee) event.

Edna says the key to living a long and happy life is “keeping yourself busy and active.”

The Embracia in Glasshouse Country Olympic Challenge Opening Ceremony was conducted on the 24th July. Lorna Pettman from Bellbird Household led the march proudly holding the Bellbird banner. Stanley and Coochin Household followed with Coonowrin and Mellum Households joining them to meet at the theatre. The Torch then arrived via our Olympic official Sharon Logue who passed it to Suzanne Hoey Director of Care, to officiate the Torch Relay. The Torch was then passed to all residents before being placed in the foyer for the duration of the games. The march past was magnificent with residents lining the streetscape cheering and waving as the community teams entered. What followed were three days of unique Olympic events including Wheelie Walker Relays, Olympic Bowls, Equestrian Dressage and Show Jumping rounds, Discus and Shot Put.

The events were a fine display of sportsmanship, stamina and courage demonstrated by all competitors. There was a lot of fun had by all. The overall results were Coochin and Mellum Households equal first place, Bellbird came in second, then Coonowrin followed by Stanley.

What has retirement village living got to do with a garden expo? Well, nothing really, however it does give the company an opportunity to support the local community and let the wider community know a little more about the difference between retirement village living and aged care living. Chris Minetti from Embracia in Glasshouse Country Retirement Village was there. It was also a great day out, blowing up balloons for children and sampling the local cooking. Yum!

A special day was experienced by residents and staff at Embracia in Reservoir when staff came to work dressed

as Clowns. The day was a wonderful success, all the ‘clowning around’ paid off as all residents and families enjoyed the colourful and magical atmosphere that was created by all the staff involved.

Colourful balloons were donated by a local business which added to the festivities. It was such a fun day and so rewarding to see the smiles on everyones face.

Embracia in Lynbrook residents have been busy cooking up a storm with soup making to warm us up during the Winter months.

Residents from all households get together to peel, chop, wash and grate the vegetables. Our latest soup was a good old fashion chicken, barley and vegetable soup. This soup is very popular with the residents along with the staff. All hands on deck in the theatre kitchen as we have taken on the job of cooking soup for the whole home on these days. On soup cooking days, we share recipes and cooking stories. This brings back fantastic memories from the past. In the next few weeks our staff along with residents are booked into a food handling education. This will only

compliment our soup making skills along with our regular cooking group held on Sundays. If you are visiting Lynbrook on a Sunday afternoon, be sure to drop in for a snack made by the residents.

Bribie visit the Deception Bay OlympicsBy Gail Parker, Lifestyle Coordinator

On 26th July Embracia on Bribie visited the Embracia Home at Deception Bay to view their Olympic display. On entry you can stop and have your photo taken in the London double decker bus along side Big Ben. Next stop is the London Taxi at Lands End giving you directions to various countries. As you proceed through the building you discover Olympic Games displays in all communities.

The staff, residents, family members and volunteers did a fantastic job with the displays. Our residents were treated to a lovely lunch whilst watching the London Olympic PowerPoint on the big screen that was part of their Opening Ceremony. Congratulations to Embracia on the Avenue (Deception Bay).

Olympic Cocktail Party “Oh What a Night”By Sharon Brown, Lifestyle CoordinatorOh What a Night, Late July 2012. What a very special time for us. What an evening, What a night! The words of the song say it all.

Our Olympic Party night at Embracia on The Avenue had been many months in the planning and was a huge success with great positive feedback from residents, relatives, visitors and staff. We were very happy Dawn and Peter MacKenzie and Michael and Margaret Isaac were able to join us.

For months residents had been assisting in making the decorations and deciding what went where. Each Community also decorated their area with a theme. The Activity Room and the Café was set up as the venue and a selection of food and beverages from around the world was enjoyed by the 150+ people who attended.

The evening started with a performance by the Embracia on the Avenue choir who sang a medley of Australian and English songs in keeping with the Olympic Theme. One of our residents, James Cable is a Cockney Londoner and was very proud to sing a solo, “Maybe It’s Because I’m a Londoner”. This was followed by entertainment from the excellent Peninsula Jazz Band who interacted with everyone and had the residents dancing in the aisles.

The London Bus and the London Taxi which decorated the front Foyer was a great photo opportunity for many and will provide many happy memories. Claire Hearn & Estelle Yates

On a cloudless, sunny, windless Winters day as only Queensland can supply, a group from Embracia in Glasshouse Country Retirement Village took a bus trip to Tewantin for the morning river cruise.

The Tewantin marina was where we met our boat and enjoyed the natural beauty of the Noosa River and a delicious morning tea . The cruise was followed by lunch at the Tewantin RSL and ice-cream at the Ginger Factory on the way home. A most enjoyable day was had by all.

Our residents at Embracia on Bribie waited eagerly for the chance to ask Honourable Members of Parliament Wyatt Roy and Bronwyn Bishop their political questions when they visited our home on 26th July.

An afternoon tea was held in their honour with standing room only as seats soon filled up. Family members joined us but left the burning questions to the residents. Both Wyatt and Bronwyn chatted to each table of residents as they made them feel very welcome. Bronwyn commented on the lovely china to Phyllis who’s daughter donated to the home to use for our High Tea afternoons.

Cruise to the Pacific IslandsBy Noel Buchanan, Resident at Embracia on The Avenue

This was a trip that I have been planning since 2008 and was to be the trip of a lifetime. Other than going on the ferry between North and South Islands in NZ, I had never been on a big ship so when it came to fruition it was very exciting. I was accompanied by my sister Faye, her husband Jim, and Josh who is a carer in Sapphire Community.

We were going on the Pacific Dawn setting sail on Saturday 19th May for the Islands of New Caledonia (Noumea), Loyalty Islands (Lifou) and Vanuatu (Port Villa). We cruised down the Brisbane river, guided by tug boats, viewing the container ships and car carriers. We were also able to view how well Brisbane had recovered from the floods. There was plenty of on board entertainment and I really enjoyed the quizzes which were held in the Bengal Bar, and the theme nights and shows in the theatre every night. The Pirate night was one I really enjoyed as I was also able to get in costume for the evening.

The first stop of the cruise was in Noumea when we entered the New Caledonia Lagoon and berthed at 2.35pm. We had an enjoyable afternoon watching one of the locals husk coconuts and put a straw in the top and had a drink. We took a bus trip around the Island viewing sailing ships and beaches. The language spoken by the locals is French as it is a French Territory. The British explorer Captain James Cook discovered New Caledonia in 1774.

The next stop was the Island of Lifou. To visit the island, small boats (tenders) took passengers ashore. Due to mobility challenges, I stayed on board with Josh and enjoyed the sunshine and walking in the top deck which was made for walking and enjoying the beautiful views.

The third and final stop was the Island of Vanuatu, where we cruised through beautiful lagoons to Port Villa. We had a great day shopping at the local markets which line the main road into town from the port and some of the shops in town. I was able to buy many souvenirs. The day was a beautiful 25 degrees.

After boarding a small boat and then onto a pontoon, we all had a fantastic helicopter ride which was amazing and very exciting. The whole day was a great trip enjoying the sights and being able to talk to the locals. It was very interesting seeing how they live and the cultural differences.

Ship life was very enjoyable and the food amazing and plentiful. Great entertainment, movies and shows. On the way back from the Islands, the seas were a bit rough but manageable and by using sea bands which managed to avoid seasickness.I enjoyed the trip so much that I am looking forward to planning another cruise. I would recommend this holiday to everyone.

Following discussion at a Footy Club meeting the residents of Embracia on The Avenue decided they would like to change the name of the ‘Hawk’s Den’ to the ‘Footy Parlour’. One of the members (Ivan) sent an email requesting the change. This was sent

onto Peter MacKenzie who arranged the name change which is now in place. The residents were delighted at the speed at which they got a response .

The group meet every Friday afternoon to discuss the previous weeks games and to check where everyone is on the footy tipping table. The residents have a separate footy tipping to the staff. They enjoy a glass of wine or a cup of tea and a cheese platter most weeks.

They are now busily fund raising through a raffle to hold an end of season Footy Party.

Some of the prizes in the raffle include a signed football (Bronco’s, of course) and a Bronco’s players jumper.
