We’reTheBartlett,UCL’sglobalfacultyofthebuiltenvironment.We’reheretobuildabetterfuture.Combiningarchitectureandplanningwithdisciplinessuchasenergyandconstruction,heritageandpublicpolicy,weexplorehumanspaces.Notjustphysicalstructureslikehomes,officeblocksandcities,buttheinvisiblestructuresthatgovernthem.Bysharingourresearchwithleadingthinkersfromindustry,governmentandbeyond,achievingtruediversityofperspectiveandexpertise,wecanunderstandhowthesestructuresaffectthewaywelive.Andwecancreateavisionofafairerandmoreprosperoussociety.

WelcometoTheBartlett,UCL’sFacultyoftheBuiltEnvironment.Overthepast100years,TheBartletthasgrowninnameandsizetobeoneofthemostinnovativeandcomprehensivebuiltenvironmentfacultiesintheworld.

Mostuniversityfacultiesclustertogetheraroundaseriesofdisciplinesandmethods,howeverTheBartlettisorganisedtotacklethechallengesfacingourplanetandsocietyinwhichthebuiltenvironmentplaysarole.OurworkatTheBartlettisallabouthumanspaces.Yes,thatmeansphysicalstructureslikehouses,buildingandcities,butalso,theinvisiblestructuresthatgovernthesethings:politicalandlegalsystems;economicinstitutionsandsocialnorms.Evenourunderstandingofthepast,presentandfuture.Combiningdesign,historyandtheoryacrossalloftheseareas,weworktounderstandtheforcesshapingsocietytoday–andweworktomakesocietyfairerandmoreprosperous.

UCLandTheBartletthavemanyopportunitiesforyoutomeetotherstudents,staffandindustryexpertsfromdisciplinesyouwouldn’tnormallythinkof,sodomakethemostoflecturesandseminarsacrosstheuniversity.We’realsobasedinLondon,oneofthemostexcitingcitiesintheworld.Withsuchadiversepopulation,youaresuretoforgememoriesandfriendshipsthatwilllastalifetime.

Likeyou,I’malsoexcitedabouttheworkthatliesaheadasweprogresstheBuiltEnvironmentsubjectandwhatitmeans,whilemeetingeveryonealongtheway.

Ourworkisabouttheshapeandstructureofhumanenvironments,andourambitionisboundless,andthepossibilitiesareendless.AnditisuptoyouasthenextgenerationfromTheBartletttopushthelimitsfortheBuiltEnvironmentdisciplines,totacklerealworldissuesandtohelpbuildabetterfuture.

Finally,don’tforgetthatbeingastudentshouldbefun,somakesureyoutakethetimeouttoenjoyyourselvesandmakethemostofbeingpartofTheBartlettandUCL.

AsoneoftheoldestbutmostradicalFacultiesofitskind,TheBartletthasbuiltareputationforeducationandresearchthatdrawsstudentsandacademicsfromacrosstheworld.

OurFacultycontainsaplethoraofapproaches,disciplinesandspecialisms,fromHeritage,toLighting,toSmartCitiestoLandscapeArchitecture.ThesearedividedintotheSchoolsandInstitutesshownonpage07.

Individually,ourdepartmentsleadtheirfields.Inpartnership,theydevelopnewresponsestopressingworldissues.Together,theyrepresentaworld-leading,multidisciplinaryfaculty,unitedbytheradicalspiritofUCL.Withawealthofresources,partnersandhistoryonourdoorstepinLondon,weareabletolearnaboutthebuiltenvironmentinwaysthatareimpossibleelsewhere.

TheBartletthasadynamicandintriguinghistory.OurnamestemsfromSirHerbertHenryBartlett,whodonated£30,000toUCLin1911toconstructanewhomefortheSchoolofArchitecture.Asyoucanimagine,alothashappenedatTheBartlettsincethen.FromourDivisionofDecoration1928-1963,toourwartimeevacuationtoAberystwyth,Wales,tostaffandstudentssquattingTolmersSquarein1973.You can delve more into our past here

SituatedintheheartofLondon,TheBartlettdrawsonthecapital’snumerousexpertsandfacilities,andtakesadvantageoftheflowofinternationalbuiltenvironmentresearchersandpractitionersthroughthecity.

TheBartlettisalsobasedatHereEast,a1.2millionsquarefootcomplexinLondon’sQueenElizabethOlympicPark.In2016,UCLacquired3,000squaremetresofstudiospaceatHereEasttoundertakeground-breakingresearchintopicssuchasarchitecture,infrastructure,transportandrobotics.

OurdesignatedBartlettLibraryislocatedonthegroundfloorofCentralHouse,14UpperWoburnPlace–closetothecentreofcampus.TheLibraryoffersamixofsilentandgroupworkstudyspaces,andhousesbooks,journalsandDVDscoveringallofTheBartlett’steachingandresearchinterests.

UCL Urban Laboratory

TheUCLUrbanLaboratoryisaworld-leadingcross-disciplinarycentrewhichpromotescritical,creativeandcollaborativeinquiryintourgenturbanproblems.BringingtogetherthefinesturbanteachingandresearchatUCL,UrbanLab’sactivitiesshowcase,promoteandbuildonworkfromacrosstheuniversity,andprovideaplatformforurbaniststocometogetherandcollaborate.
