Peter Ellyard

Each time I read this quotation from Ellyard I think of the journey we share at St Patrick's College. We do live in exciting times as we talk of restructuring the school, establishing Junior, Middle and Senior Schools, introducing Teaching and Learning Teams, and of refocusing on the core business of any school: the holistic development of its students.

We are moving ahead with the planning of facilities to support the new structure. At the same time we are maintaining the wealth of great experiences for which St Patrick's College is deservedly renowned: public speaking and the performing arts, social justice and liturgy, Old Collegians and sport.

At the recent meeting of Heads of Edmund Rice Schools from throughout Australasia, the following questions were put.

Who are we becoming? Why are we choosing this path? Would Edmund approve of the path we seek to pursue?

I believe that as a school community we should reflect on them because they need to be answered honestly. My reflection leads me to conclude that there is much to be hopeful for at St Patrick's College.

Now is our opportunity to live out what we have been offered.

Excellence

St Patrick's College under the leadership of Headmaster, Dr Peter Casey, and through the efforts of staff, parents and students, is committed to strengthening the culture of excellence that pervades all areas of College life. Dr Casey has reinforced to all students the notion of personal excellence: that each boy strives to do his best in any area of school life in which he is involved in. This could range from academic performance to music, sport, leadership, behaviour around the school grounds or the manner in which students wear their uniform.

In Terms 2 and 3 there have been some wonderful examples of boys striving for and achieving personal excellence. Several examples are ncluded whi le others will be covered n future editions of The Shamrock.

Scholarships

On Saturday 18th May, 151 boys sat the College's Scholarship Exam conducted by the Australian Council for Educational Research. In the following weeks boys also participated in a range of category specific testing in areas such as music, art, sport and performing arts.

All boys that participated in the 2002 Scholarship Programme are to be congratulated for their endeavour. The experience of being involved in the Scholarship Programme will stand all boys in good stead for future testing processes that they may be involved in, both at the College and in future study and work situations.

In all 17 Scholarships were awarded. Scholarships were awarded for entry at Year 7, 10 and 11 level and for a range of categories including academic performance, art, music, sport, performing art and general citizenship. All scholarships had an academic base in keeping w ith the College's phi losophy of nurturing and recognis ing academic excellence. Congratulations to the following boys who were successful in obtaining St Patrick's College Scholarships for 2003:

Ray McLean works with Andrew Forbes and Nathan Anderson as part of the Leadership Programme.

Leadership Programme

Twenty-five Year 9 and 10 students have been involved in a Leadership Skills Programme this semester. The programme w ill run over 7 sessions and culminates in participants making a presentation to parents, staff and peers on either a leadership case study or t he exploration of a contemporary leadership theory or issue.

The programme is being used as a pilot for the development of a course that could be undertaken by students throughout the College. Participants in this programme have been exposed to a vari1:1ly of leaders including Ray McLean (Leadership Consultant, Coll ingwood Football Club and the Australian Boomers Basketball Team), David Parkin, Peter Howley (SPC 1963-66), Dr Tom Roberts, Dr Laurie Prosser, Gerard Fitzgerald (SPC 1973) and Richard Tantau, CEO of Athlegen Treatment Tables.

The Course has highlighted that all students have the capacity to be leaders within t he College. As Year 10 student Nathan Anderson noted: "Everyone in the College is given the opportunity to lead. Leaders are not born or designated by a title: they are developed, often through hard work and being prepared to stand up for what they believe is right" .

At St Patrick's College it is hoped that programmes such as t his w ill encourage students to embrace leadership and play a part in improving the Col lege and maximising the opportunit ies enjoyed by all students.

Music

The Musicians of the College have been in fine tune and have recorded some outstanding performances in recent competitions. In addition they have also dazzled members of the school community with their outstanding performances in the Awakenings Concert, held recently at Founders Hall, University of Ballarat. The band also toured Tasmania receiving rave reviews wherever they performed.

Under the leadership of Jamie Ransome (SPC 1985-90), Tim Ryan (SPC 1990-95) and Nick W ill iamson and supported by student leaders Gareth Bellchambers, Dean Peldys and Adrian Bruechert, the Senior Concert Band achieved an amazing second in the Royal South Street Band Competition, only one point from the premier band. Given the turnover in members this year, this is an outstanding result and reinforces the depth of talent that exists within the Col lege in the Music and Performing Arts area. More than half of the Senior Concert Band are in Years 8 and 9.

The College band was afforded the honour of opening "Showcase 2002", the event that official ly ends the Royal South Street Competitions. The Showcase concert highlights the leading performers from the four month Royal South Street Competitions.

Public Speaking

In July Year 12 student Brendan Annear was crowned State Champion in the Plain English Speaking Competit ion. To get to the State t it les he defeated all comers from the Ballarat region and from a highly competitive semi-finals stage in Melbourne.

The finalists were required to present an eight-minute prepared speech and a three-minute impromptu. Impromptu topics in the semi-final and fina l were; That Melbourne is a city of unseen things' and 'If only I had the time.' Brendan's prepared speech was on the topic, Human Cloning. Brendan went on to win the final and continue a proud SPC tradition - he follows in the footsteps of Ben Cunningham (SPC 1997-99) who was State champion in 1999. Brendan went on to compete in the National Titles in Adelaide in August. Whi lst not able to take out first prize, he was awarded a special commendation in this extremely prestigious and competitive event.

In later months Brendan was also awarded a Swannie Award from the Debating Association of Victoria for being the premier debater in the region.

Following in Brendan's footsteps was Year 9 student Ben Shepherd who won the Regional Final in the Legacy J unior Public Speaking Competition. The Regional Final was contested by a number of polished speakers, with Ben voted the best speaker in the region by the judging panel. He later finished 14th in the state final.

Drama

In August St Patrick 's College and Loreto College staged the Oscar Wilde classic, The Importance of Being Earnest. The main characters in the endearing comedy were played by Rufus Brokenbrow (Jack Worthing}, Phil Ingram (Algernon Moncrieff), Hayley A llen (Gwendoline Fairfax), Jessica Torpy (Cecily Cardew} and Jessikah Rau (Lady Bracknell).

The Play received an extremely positive review in The Courier and h ighlights the collective talents of students at St Pat's and Loreto.

Boarding

As highlighted in the last edition of The Shamrock, the College Board is fully committed to the future of Boarding at St Patrick's College. The Board has committed to renovating the existing Houses on the property to turn them into modern,

purpose-renovated Boarding Hostels. Work is well underway on both McCann House (refer to photo above) and Nangle House.

The College is blessed by having these majestic old bui ldings which wil l in time provide boys w ith residential faci lities unparalleled amongst regional boarding schools. The exterior work to McCann House is almost complete and has greatly enhanced the already magnificent streetscape that t he College presents. Internal work has commenced at Nangle House and has again highlighted t he intrinsic beauty of the Houses as well as p roviding facil ities that are ideally suited to boys living and studying away from Home.

Extensive internal works will commence on both Houses as soon as students leave at the end of the year to ensure both Houses are ready for boys return ing in 2003.

The Shamrock Association has also been very busy and has purchased new king size single beds for both Houses. The Association is a lso looking at desks that will better meet the needs of students with computers.

The College wil l also introduce "Occasional Boarding" for students who may require accommorl;ition due to sports training, music or other school commitments. Students would be provided w ith an evening meal, a bed and breakfast w ithin the College's fully supervised boarding facil it ies. This w i ll be an invaluable service for day boys from communities such as Beaufort, Daylesford, Skipton, Bacchus Marsh, Maryborough and Melton. "Kings of the Round Ball Games"

Basketball

St Pat's had not won a basketball t itle since 1995 and faced a polished Ballarat High School side that had been the powerhouse of the competition over the past seven years s ince becoming a Specialist Sports School in Basketball. In an incredibly close Grand Final, where t he lead see-sawed a ll game, St Pat's finally prevailed 48-46 to take the BPSA t itle.

The game was in fact so close that even with 1.6 seconds remaining High School had an opportunity to win. A m issed free throw, rebounded by a High school player was thrown up in hope - the shot missed and St Pat's won the t itle of BPSA Premiers and Champions having gone through t he season undefeated. Coaches Craig Campbell and Colleen Pope were overjoyed with the win and the efforts of all players. Colleen Pope has been involved w ith the College's basketball programme since 1995.

Soccer

In the 1st XI Soccer, St Pat's continued their dominance throughout the season and after a keenly contested first half ran out winners 3-0. Following an obviously well worded and inspirational address from Coach Ray Janes and Team Manager Les Bone, in the second half St Pat's combined as a team superbly and despite some spirited defending from Grammar were able to create numerous scoring opportunities.

St Patrick's College 3 defeated Ballarat Grammar School 0 Goal Scorers: Nick Whitefield, Stefan Heemann, Scott Quinney

Members of the Premiership team were: Chris Ives, Josh Jellett, Nick Whitefield, Dane Harney, Paul Cosgriff, Scott Quinney, Brogan Johnson, Stefan Heemann, David Ryan, Glen Briody, Jon Davey, Josh Erbacher, Tom Rice, Andrew Francis and Chris McBrearty(c).

Football

Whilst the 1st XVIII did not reach the finals of the BPSA or Herald Sun Competitions, t here was significant development in the squad, suggesting that there are good times ahead for coach Mr Howard Clark and his young chargers. Many Year 10 students gained senior experience this year and will play a leadership role over the next two years.

The Leo O'Brien Club

Major works have commenced on the Main Oval to restore it to its once hallowed status. In August the centre wicket square was extended and considerably upgraded. New Merri Creek soil was laid as the foundation of the centre wicket table and new couch grass rolled out. The w icket area is now a first class five wicket table that will provide an excellent playing surface and increased opportunities for senior and junior cricketers to p lay turf cricket.

To complement this work a ful ly automated sprinkler system has been installed that w il l ensure the playing surface is maintained in optimal condition for all 12 months of the year.

These projects have been greatly assisted by the generosity of members of the Leo O'Brien Club. Foundation membership ($500) of the Club is available until December this year. A ll Foundation members w ill have their names recorded on a Board that will hang in the O'Malley Centre until the Main Oval Pavil ion is constructed. Life membership of the club is available for $125, with all monies raised going to the development of sporting facilities at the College. For more details please contact Development Manager Mark Waddington.

GREEN, WHITE & BLUE Official Publication of the OCA

Welcome to the second edition of the new look Green, White and Blue. It has been gratifying to receive feedback from all around the world. We have received greetings from David McMahon (SPC 1989-94), security guard to the stars at Wimbledon and from an apologetic Gerard Sullivan (SPC 1990-92) who can't attend his 10 year reunion because he'll be holidaying in Ireland - no sympathy from here Sully!

Please keep us informed of all of your journeys, achievements and anecdotes so that we can share your news w ith other members of the SPC fami ly. Special thanks to Don Callahan (SPC 1958-64) who picked up an astray apostrophe and so rightly noted, "Brother Kelty would have been withering in h is criticism of the person who misplaced the apost rophe on page 3!" We will take any feedback, so please keep it coming!

OCA President Chris Conway (SPC 1965-69) has been on a working vacation throughout Europe and the USA - we look forward to his travel report in the next edition of Green, White and Blue.

Regional Dinners

Over the past few months the Headmaster and Development Manager have been working their way around the countryside catching up with Old Collegians and their fami lies. Dinners have been held in Warrnambool, Horsham, Bendigo, Mildura, Deniliquin and Geelong. All have been extremely enthusiastically received by those in attendance and wi ll no doubt be the forerunner of highly anticipated annual get togethers in each location.

Whenever Old Boys get together in the name of St Patrick's College there is a wonderful spirit of friendship and some h ighly amusing anecdotes recounted. The depth of affection that Old Boys have for t he College is truly moving and is a testament to the work of t he dedicated brothers and staff who looked after Boarders and day students at the College.

Over 30 Old Boys also gathered at Bell's Hotel in Melbourne on Friday September 13 for drinks. It is planned to conduct a number of social functions such as this each year. A particular focus wil l be on getting "Young Old Boys" , those who have not yet had their 10 year reunion, together for a quiet, or not so quiet catch up!

Details of t hese events will appear in future editions of "Green White and Blue".

Ben Barlow

Ben (SPC 1985-87) attended St Patrick's College as a boarder from Denil iquin in southern NSW. As a scholar he performed very well at St Pat's and excelled at Public Speaking winning the Purton Oratory and Hugh Divine Impromptu.

After leaving SPC he completed a Bachelor of Economics at LaTrobe University and a Master of Business (Agribusiness) from Monash University. He has worked for the National Australia Bank as an Agribusiness Specialist at a number of locations around the state including Mildura, Kerang, Horsham and Warrnambool. Ben has recently been appointed Agribusiness Manager for South West Victoria and South East South Aust ra lia.

Ben is married to Cate Fawns of Deniliqui n and st i l l closely fo llows the fortunes of St Pat's amidst a very hect ic lifestyle. Last year he completed an Australian Rural Scholarship Programme that took him to all parts of Aust ralia.

Ben and Cate also own properties at Cavendish in Victoria's south west and in Hay, NSW, where they actively run agricultural and agoforestry businesses. Ben and Cate spend a lot of time t ravelling between properties and seem to spend time between the collar and tie and working gear. Thankfully however Ben notes, 'there is sti ll t ime for the swag, a few chops on the BBQ and a couple of cans on the weekend'.

Brother Justin Linus Kelty Memorial Mass

On Wednesday July 31 approximately 90 people gathered in the College Chapel to celebrate the life of Brother Kelty. Bishop Ronald Mulkearns led five Old Boy Priests in the celebration of the Eucharist for Br Kelty, a former staff member and Headmaster of St Patrick's College. Guests included Br Dowling, from the Province Leadership team of the Christian Brothers, Mr David Dyer (contemporary Headmaster of Br Kelty's at Ballarat College), past SPC Headmasters Br Stewart and Br Buckley, Sr Therese Power and Br Chanel Naughtin.

Significantly this was the first celebration in the freshly painted Chapel, with all in attendance greatly impressed by the quality of the Chapel's appearance.

Old Boys in the News Bishop Brian Finnigan (SPC 1960-62) sent a bookmark to the Old Collegians as thanks for the Association's congratulatory letter earlier in the year. Bishop Finnigan wrote, "please accept this note as a personal expression of my profound gratitude for your thoughtfulness in contacting me. It has been overwhelming to receive messages from so many people, many of who were part of my ministry and life decades ago".

A large number of current and past students and staff gathered at St Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne in July to celebrate the ordination of Anthony Denton (SPC 1984-89). The College appreciated his first celebration of the Eucharist at his Alma Mater at the Farewell Mass for the Year 12's recently.
