Weekly Halacha - Parshas Shemini R’ Mordechai Torczyner – [email protected]
For the Maror stage of the Seder, we briefly immerse maror in charoset, and then shake off the charoset. Should I do this for the maror eaten in Koreich, too?
The reasons for dipping at Maror do not apply for Koreich: 1. We dip in charoset at Maror to commemorate the mortar
of Egypt, but we don’t need to do that twice. 2. We dip in charoset at Maror to neutralize a possible ‘kafa’
toxin in maror, but in Koreich, the matzah of the sandwich serves that purpose.
Nonetheless, some do dip the maror of Koreich in charoset, to commemorate the maror which would have been in Hillel's Korban Pesach sandwich. Some suggest that those who dip Koreich in charoset should still not dip the matzah; matzah symbolizes our journey to freedom, and it does not mix with the mortar of Egypt.
Each family should follow its custom; in the absence of per-sonal custom, people should follow communal practice.

PARSHAS QUESTIONS SHEMINI BY: THE RAV
First Aliyah: (9:1) Why doesn’t the Torah tell us what the date was when the events of the “eighth day” took place, nor does it even explain what it was the “eighth day” of? Second Aliyah: (9:22-23) Why did Aharon first bless the people alone and afterwards Moshe and Aharon blessed the people together? Third Aliyah: (10:5) Why does the Torah have to tell us that Nadav and Avihu’s bodies were transported clothed – would I think otherwise? Fourth Aliyah: (10:12) Why does the Torah call Elazar and Isamar the “remaining sons” – isn’t that painfully obvious? Fifth Aliyah: (10:17) Why does the word “דרש ” appear twice in a row? Sixth Aliyah: Why are the symptoms of a kosher species of mammals split hooves and chewing cud? Seventh Aliyah: (11:45) What does the fact that G-d took us out of Egypt have to do with the laws of purity and impurity?
