“We have thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Brystone, The accommodation is excellent & we wanted for nothing.

Brystone is a distinctly luxurious yet contemporary 300 year old Yorkshire Dales

farmhouse in a divine location in the tiny hamlet of West Stonesdale. It is an old

farmhouse with a fabulous stone fireplace, beamed ceilings, as many bathrooms as

bedrooms, and surrounded by its own gardens with unforgettable views on all sides

West Stonesdale is between Keld in Swaledale and the world famous Tan Hill Inn,

Britain’s highest pub. This is also true walking country on both the Pennine Way,

which was Britain’s first long distance footpath, and Alfred Wainwright’s Coast to

Coast walk along with many other shorter walks. The River Swale nearby has a series

of waterfalls, locally called forces, Wain Wath Force, Kisdon Force, East Gill Force and

Catrake Force, all only a short walk or drive away.

This is a beautiful renovation of an old property brought back into use as a house

again. The family have done much of the work themselves with the help of many

local craftsmen and this shows in the attention to detail using the original features of

the ouse whilst bringing it into the modern world with all of the facilities that we

expect nowadays. Brystone is a house to enjoy and remember.

West End Cottage, Askrigg Sleeps 4

**** West End Cottage is grade 2 listed and is probably one of the oldest cottages in Askrigg, right in the cobbled village centre opposite the church. It has a lovely, large south facing walled garden with a raised patio area, with meadows and hills behind to give that spacious feeling of the countryside on your doorstep, as indeed it is, yet with the pubs, restaurants and shops within a stones throw. The cottage has a wealth of original features with stone flags, planked floors and doors, and beamed ceilings throughout the cottage, which is filled with nooks and crannies. The cottage has been restored in an understated yet supremely tasteful fashion, so that it has an air of luxury with features such as the handbuilt kitchen with Rayburn stove and fabulous kingsize master bedroom with its massive beams and extensive views to the hills beyond, but has lost none of its original character which shines through and enfolds you as soon as you walk through the door.

from here the back door leads across a grassed area of

barn behind the cottage, and through this to the south

facing and private walled garden which belongs to the

cottage and is for your exclusive use. The barn gives

ample storage space for outdoor gear and bikes.

There are two charming and spacious single

bedrooms on the first floor, along with the family

shower room with a spacious and modern power

shower. The master bedroom is up a further flight of

stairs tucked away at the top of the cottage. This is a

About the area

Askrigg

The village of Askrigg lies sheltered beneath the stunning fells of Ellerkin and Askrigg Common towards the top

of Wensleydale. Its two and three storey stone houses and cottages line the main street, with the 15th century

parish church of St Oswald’s in the centre of the village in the old cobbled market place, complete with its

market cross and an iron bull ring set into the cobbles. Nearby villages within walking distance include Worton

and Bainbridge, both lovely walks on the stone ‘trods’ across the fields.

Visitors may recognise Cringley House as ‘Skeldale House’ from the BBC TV series ‘All Creatures Great and

Small’ with the Kings Arms being the ‘Drovers Arms’ from the same series.

There is a good village shop which can supply all of your basic needs-if you don’t see what you want then ask

them-it is surprising what they stock. Askrigg also has a delicatessen in the village where the owner cooks

delicious meals, cakes and sweets which can be purchased and brought home to eat in the comfort of the

cottage or order a picnic to take with you on your travels. Milk, cream and eggs can be bought from the farm in

the village. There are 3 pubs, The Crown Inn, The White Rose and The Kings Arms which is a former coaching

inn. All of the pubs provide bar meals and The Kings Arms also has The Silks Restaurant. We are able to offer

our customers a discount on food at The Kings Arms except for the Early Bird menu. Nearby is the luxury

Yorebridge House Hotel, voted the UK’s most romantic hotel on Trip Adviser and a popular wedding venue

which offers bar meals and a fabulous restaurant, perfect for special occasions and celebrations.

There are plentiful walks including along the banks of the nearby River Ure and the Askrigg Waterfalls Walk

which takes in both Whitfield Force and Mill Gill Force above Askrigg (force is the local dialect for waterfall), or

tackle the climb up the hill of Addleborough across the dale and see if you can find the Devil’s Stone which

folklore says was thrown by the devil in a battle against the giant who lived on Addleborough. The stones

thrown in return are known as The Carlow Stone and The Mermaids Stone and are on the edge of Lake

Semerwater nearby.

Askrigg is a friendly village with plenty of local services and makes a great base from which to explore the

Yorkshire Dales.

Hawes

Hawes is a small and bustling market town at the head of Wensleydale and is surrounded by high fells. It has a cobbled main street and stone buildings from the 17th century onwards and still has shops which are individually owned family businesses and which are unique to the town. There are good craft shops, pubs, cafes, restaurants and food shops and there is a weekly market on Tuedays-this is shopping how it used to be. Hawes, whose name originates from the word Hause meaning a narrow neck of land, has had a market charter since 1699 when it was granted by William III. You can still see the old market toll-house next to the Market Hall and one of the oldest buildings dates from 1668 when it was built as a Quaker rest house-there is still a strong Quaker community in the area.

Page 17: Welcome To Askrigg Cottage Holidays - Holiday Cottages In The

There is a fascinating Dales Countryside Museum which shows the history of the area from agriculture through to lead mining and the present day. The Hawes Ropeworks, where you can see rope being made on its rope walk exports its rope all over the world. This is a traditional dairy farming area, with the grass locally being rich in herbs which helps to give the local Wensleydale Cheese its distinctive flavour. This cheese has been made in the area since the Cistercian Monks developed the recipe in the 1100’s and is still made today. The best place to see the cheese being made and its history, along with plenty of free samples to whet your taste buds, is the Wensleydale Creamery in Hawes. The Creamery was rescued from closure in 1992 when it was bought out by locals and has gone from strength to strength since then promoting real Wensleydale made in Yorkshire across the world. This is true limestone country which you can’t miss in the landscape and buildings. There are numerous limestone pavements, caves, crags and waterfalls including the nearby Hardraw Force (force is the local dialect for waterfall) and the unique and spectacular Buttertubs Pass from Hawes into Swaledale-this is a true mountain pass with stunning views. The Buttertubs are 20 metre deep limestone potholes which you can look down into at the top of the pass. It is said that the name of the potholes comes from the times when farmers would rest there on their way to market from Swaledale into Hawes. During hot weather they would lower the butter they had produced into the potholes to keep it cool. This is a thriving little town in a beautiful location and well worth spending a bit of time exploring.

Leyburn

Leyburn is a busy and picturesque market town sitting above the northern bank of the River Ure in

Wensleydale. Market day is Friday and there is also a monthly Farmers Market. The town has a wide range of

independently owned shops which are situated around a cobbled market square along with a number of

pubs, restaurants and teashops. Leyburn is also home to Tennant's auction house which is popular for its

regular fine art and antique furniture auctions.

Annually there is a Dales Festival of Food and Drink, held over May Day bank holiday weekend and also an

annual Wensleydale agricultural show at the end of August.

Although a small town, Leyburn is home to a railway station on the re-opened Wensleydale Railway which

offers tourist rides throughout Wensleydale, mostly on diesel multiple units but occasionally on a steam train.

Leyburn Shawl is a beautiful limestone escarpment just a short walk from the Market Place and which has

breathtaking views over Wensleydale towards Pen Hill. The 'Shawl' is thought to be named after Mary Queen

of Scots dropped her shawl here when she was escaping from nearby Bolton Castle.

Completed in 1399 by Richard le Scrope, Chancellor of England to Richard II, its scars bear testament to over

600 years of fascinating history including involvement in the Pilgrimage of Grace, Mary Queen of Scots

imprisonment and a Civil War siege so a trip to Bolton Castle is worth it for both the myriad of historical tales it

can tell, but also to explore what was a major part of ITV1's recent TV show, The Dales.

Page 18: Welcome To Askrigg Cottage Holidays - Holiday Cottages In The

Middleham nearby with its castle is associated with King Richard lll who used it as his political base. Today the

town is a modern centre of horse racing in the UK and the open stables on Good Friday is a fascinating insight

into the village and how integral the stables are within it. It is quite normal to see the race horse strings walking

though the village on their way to or from Middleham Moor where much of the training takes place.

The Forbidden Corner is hard to explain but take our word for it that you must go and that it will be the most

fun you’ve had in ages, whatever your age! It is a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises

created in a four acre garden in the heart of Tupgill Park and the Yorkshire Dales. The temple of the

underworld, the eye of the needle, a huge pyramid made of translucent glass, paths and passages that lead

nowhere, extraordinary statues - at every turn there are decisions to make and tricks to avoid. This is a day out

with a difference which will challenge and delight adults and children of all ages. Advance booking is essential

but numbers are limited so it never becomes too crowded.

Reeth

Reeth is a market town in Swaledale and is probably best known for its large and airy village green which truly

is the centre of life in this popular village. It is here that you will find the village bonfire on Bonfire Night,

numerous events for The Swaledale Festival in May and June, the weekly market on Fridays and much more

throughout the year.

The village is centred around the green with a good mix of houses, pubs, restaurants, tea rooms and individual

craft and art galleries plus walks in abundance in whichever direction you choose to go including the long

distance Coast to Coast walk. The River Swale is famous for its beauty and there are many well-signed walks

along its banks.

Swaledale and Arkengarthdale which is much less well known are the two most northerly dales in the National

Park and have scattered villages in dramatic scenery, many of which date from Viking times when they were

established-the local dialect here is very similar to the Norse from which it derives.

The history of the area, as for much of the Yorkshire Dales, is one of agriculture, lead mining and hand knitting

which you can see in the landscape and also the quaint Swaledale Museum in Reeth. There is also a strong

artistic heritage which you can find first hand in the numerous high quality craft shops and galleries in the area.

The Swaledale Festival is held for 2 weeks in May and June and is a programme of music, arts and walking in

the Yorkshire Dales. For The Guardian and the Daily Telegraph, it's one of the best festivals in the country; for

the Yorkshire Post it's "the perfect marriage of local and international artists". It certainly punches above its

weight and you never quite know what is going to be on offer, but it is a mix of artists who perform in some

fabulous settings in the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

Richmond

Richmond is an ancient and bustling market town, with its Norman castle, cobbled market place and streets, Georgian architecture, monuments and abbeys, shops, eateries and theatre, all built around and above the magnificent River Swale with the fabulous scenery of the Yorkshire Dales National Park on the doorstep.

Page 19: Welcome To Askrigg Cottage Holidays - Holiday Cottages In The

Richmond was founded by the Normans in 1071, and the castle still dominates the town. In medieval times the town was an important market, which continues to this day with weekly markets. Much building took place in the Georgian period, and this is still evident in the town today with elegant townhouses, the Georgian Theatre Royal, the castle walk, the obelisk in the Market Place and the Culloden Tower. More recently the railway came to Richmond, and whilst this is no longer the case the old station is now used as a health and leisure suite, including a swimming pool. In the historic Victorian railway station there is a contemporary café bar and restaurant; a modern, two-screen cinema; an art gallery over two floors; a free heritage centre; and six artisan food producers - open to the public and selling their produce. Visitors can buy from a medley of Yorkshire delights from a bakery, cheese-maker, micro brewery, ice-cream parlour, fudge house and honey-maker. There is also an historic link with The Green Howards, and the fascinating Green Howards Museum is in the centre of Richmond. Military links remain to this day as the world famous Ghurkas are based at nearby Catterick Garrison. Other attractions include the Millgate House Gardens, a walled garden behind one of the Georgian houses off the market place. There are also the Friary Gardens, the ruins of Easby Abbey, the Richmondshire Museum and the Georgian Theatre Royal, Britain’s most complete Georgian playhouse, with its professional productions. If shopping is your thing, then you will not be disappointed, since Richmond has any number of individual shops and galleries that you will not find elsewhere, and there is an excellent selection of pubs, restaurants, cafes and takeaways to suit every pocket and taste. Just outside the town you are straight into the spectacular countryside of the Yorkshire Dales National Park,

which you can explore by vehicle or on foot, and further afield are the North York Moors National Park and the Lake District, Hadrian’s Wall, the East Coast, Durham, Newcastle, York, Beamish Museum, and much, much more. Richmond makes a fabulous base, whether you just want to park up the car and explore the area on foot and enjoy the local facilities, or travel further afield and get to know the North of England better.

Booking Conditions 1. Definitions: In these conditions the "Agents” shall mean "Askrigg Cottage Holidays" acting as agents on behalf of the property owners, "The Owners", in letting to the holiday maker ("The Customer").

2. Customers: Must agree to take good care of their holiday home, to leave it clean & tidy & as they found it. This is the main condition of acceptance of any booking.

3. Good Housekeeping Deposit: All new Customers will be levied a deposit of £50 per week or short break which is refunded after departure after a satisfactory inspection by the Owners, their representative or the Agents. The lead name on the booking form is held responsible for the behaviour of the party and for the condition in which the property is left at the end of the stay.

4. Holidays: In order that properties can be thoroughly inspected between lets, holidays commence at 3.00 pm or 4.00 pm on arrival day and terminate at 10.00 am on departure day.

5. Bookings: a) Bookings are accepted on the understanding that you have read the description on the website or in the brochure. b) The Agents offer holidays based on accommodation only. We do not offer package holidays. c) Bookings are held for a maximum of 7 days pending receipt of a non-returnable deposit of 1/3 of the total hire (see the price list pages). Card payments are processed on the day the booking is made. d) The balance of the hire charge and the £50 good housekeeping deposit is due six weeks before the commencement of the holiday. If we do not receive your balance by that date we will assume that you have cancelled your booking and will seek to relet the property. You will be held responsible for the balance of the hire charge due. e) Once a booking is confirmed by ourselves in writing or by e-mail a contract is deemed to be formed via ourselves as Agents, between the Customer and the Owner. f) If you book within 7 weeks of your holiday then the whole hire charge is required.

6. Occupancy: Each property is offered only on the understanding that no more than the maximum number of people as indicated in the brochure shall use it. The maximum number of people includes babies and children. The Agents or the Owners reserve the right to refuse entry to the whole party if this condition is not observed. The property is occupied strictly for holiday use only. The Customer has no right to remain in the property or to allow any person accompanying them to remain in the property.

7. Payment: We accept all major Credit and Debit cards except American Express, cheques must be drawn on a UK Bank.

8. Visit Britain Ratings: All our properties are inspected and graded by Visit Britain.

9. Linen: Bed and Kitchen linen is provided, where towels are not provided they can be hired if required, please check the individual cottage pages.

10. Fuel: Electricity and Oil are included in the rental, Coal & Logs may be charged as an extra as described in the brochure entry.

11. Liability: No liability is accepted in respect of loss or damage to the Customer or any member of their party, their baggage, car or contents resulting from riot, war, strikes, adverse weather conditions or sickness or for loss or damage by a third party. This does not exclude liability for the actions of employees, agents or subcontractors of ourselves or the Owners.

12. Complaints: If it is felt that there are reasonable grounds for complaint about your holiday home we must be contacted immediately so that appropriate action can be taken during your stay. No such matters can be dealt with after completion of your holiday.

13. Access: The Owners, their representative or the Agents shall be allowed access to the holiday accommodation at any reasonable time for essential maintenance or annual Visit Britain inspection. Wherever possible this would be by prior arrangement.

14. Cancellation Insurance & Cancellation: Cancellation Insurance is not compulsory but we strongly recommend such insurance cover. We can provide an application form for a policy with Travellers Protection Services Ltd. Should cancellation be made which does not qualify under the terms of the Customers own insurance policy or one obtained from Travellers Protection Services Ltd then the hire charge is due in full. We will seek to relet the property on your behalf at the best possible price but not necessarily at the advertised brochure price and if successful would normally return the balance of the hire charge to you less the non refundable deposit. If the property remains unlet the Customer is due to pay in full. The Agents reserve the right to pursue this claim on behalf of the Owners plus any legal costs incurred.

15. Cancellation by Ourselves: In the unlikely event that your holiday accommodation becomes unavailable due to reasons beyond our control we will use our best endeavour to find a suitable alternative property, or failing which all monies paid will be returned in full and we shall not be under any other liability.

16. Lost Property: We regret that we cannot accept responsibility for any lost property left behind at the end of your stay.

17. Representation: Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the information given either orally or written and all such representations are made in good faith, no such representations will create any liability on the part of the Agents or the Owners.

18. Stag and Hen Parties: We do not accept bookings from Stag or Hen Parties.

19. Statutory Rights: These conditions do not affect your statutory rights as a consumer.

20. Utilities: When a utility service to a holiday property fails The Agents or The Owners will assist where possible to contact the utility provider to determine when the service will be restored, neither The Agents or The Owners will be held liable for the utility service failure.
