Welcome to Charlotte Harbor
September 13, 2016 Volume 37 - Issue 11 Chartered April 4, 1980
Last Week’s Meeting
President’s Message After the Rotary Club of Monmouth Illinois was chartered in 1918, members asked a 17-year-old high school student, Gracie Peterson, to play the piano for them. She agreed. Fast forward to 1987 when Rotary allowed Women to be invited to join. Gracie was asked to join. She did not agree. Her logic was simple, “Why start paying dues? Why pay for my lunch? I’ve been playing the piano for al-most 70 years, enjoying Rotary, without paying a dime. I’d rather keep playing the piano.” Well, an anonymous Rotarian paid Gracie’s dues and meals, so she did join the club. Classification Piano Player. At 85 years, she may have easily been the oldest woman Rotarian in the world at that time. While I don’t know how long Gracie continued to play, I did find a Web site saying she played at Rotary Meetings until her death in 2006. I know she was still going strong at her 100th birthday party. This may be proof that Rotary is good for you.
Invocation Dear Lord, bless us and help us to remember Rotary welcomes all. Help us inspire a sense of unity and to re-member the larger purpose of Rotary. Bless our local endeavors for the Imagination Library as well as our glob-
al aspirations, healing little hearts with Gift of Life in El Salvador. Amen
Last week’s meeting highlights and photos. Steve Carter won the 50/50, Dave covered for Bob, Darryl assisted with Jose’ workout program and Chris Gover highlighted our club’s history.
Today’s Speaker
Like many of his staff, our Supervisor of Elections migrated from North to South, where he now calls Charlotte County home. The Hon. Paul A. Stamoulis was born in New York City, NY in 1952. He moved to New Jersey at the age of ten. In 1975 he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, NJ. Paul attended Drake University School of Law, in Des Moines, Iowa. Upon graduation in 1983, he took and passed the bar exam in three states, Iowa, New Jersey and Flori-
da. He practiced law for twenty-two years in New Jersey including appointment as a Municipal Court Judge in Hazlet, NJ for two three-year terms. The Judge's in-laws moved to Port Charlotte in 1975. In 1976 they purchased The Bay Vista restaurant in Eng-lewood. It was during this time that he developed a passion for Charlotte County. Among his accomplishments, Paul takes pride in being part of the original founders of the Dormition of the Mother of God Church (Kimisis Tis Theotokou), in Holmdel, NJ. Along with being one of the founders, he also served as President of the church for five years. Membership has grown to over 1,000, represented by the approximately 600 families that currently attend. He is a former Director of the Punta Gorda Historical Society, Charlotte County Historical Society, Cultural Center of Charlotte County, and the Englewood Gardens Homeowner's Association. Other endeavors include being a "Proud Supporter" event coordinator for the Wounded Warrior Project, a Sunday School Teacher, and a "Big Brother" in the Suncoast Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. He is a member of the Chambers of Commerce of Charlotte County, Punta Gorda and Englewood, the Charlotte County, Punta Gorda and Lemon Bay Historical So-cieties, the South Manasota Key Association, the East Englewood Homeowner's Association, the Lemon Bay Con-servancy, and the Veterans Motor Car Club of America. He is a graduate of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Depart-ment Citizen's Police Academy. Paul has been invited to speak as guest lecturer and speaker at numerous public events and ceremonies, including serving as "Keynote Speaker" to the Raritan High School graduating class of 1992, and the Murdock Middle School National Junior Honor Society, class of 2012. Our Supervisor is a member of the Florida State Association of Supervisors of Elections and has served on its By-laws and Advertising Committees, State Legislative Committee and the Voting Center Task Force which is study-ing their implementation as a means of saving money. On February 22, 2011 our supervisor received "Special Qualifications" status through certification by the Division of Elections, after attending 12 regional certification classes, passing a written exam, and conducting two success-ful elections. Our Supervisor has been granted Level I, Level II, & Level III certification by the Florida State Asso-ciation of Supervisors of Elections and in 2013 was recognized as a "Master Florida Certified Election Profession-al", the highest award bestowed by that organization. Paul has also been involved in the Ad Hoc Committee to Incorporate Englewood. He has served as a guest speaker on the subject of municipal incorporation before the "Leadership Englewood" program in 2008 and 2009. Also in 2009, he was awarded the Charlotte County Public School's "Outstanding Mentoring" award for his creation of the "Great American Comeback" School Outreach Program. Married for thirty two years to his wife Janina, they have one daughter, Elizabeth. Having graduated from Dart-mouth College summa cum laude, Phi Betta Kappa, she graduated from Stanford Law School and is an Associate at the law firm of Williams, Parker, Harrison, Dietz & Getzen in Sarasota, FL.
Paul’s appreciation for nostalgia and history, dedication to his chosen community and civic-minded approach to life are the essential tools that will assist him with this next chapter. With love of country and pride in America, he thanks all residents of Charlotte County for allowing him the opportunity to serve them.

The FOUR-Way Test of the things we think, say or do: 1. IS IT THE TRUTH? 2. IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED? 3. WILL IT BUILD GOOD WILL AND
