The Fih Sunday of Easter April 29, 2018

“If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want and it will be done for you.”

What a profound promise! Imagine how satisfying it would be to ask for whatever we wanted and then

to see that wish granted. Truly, it would be difficult to think of anyone who would not love to see a promise like this fulfilled. But we know Jesus isn’t a genie in a magic lamp sent to indulge every selfish whim. So, what’s the catch?Well, as Jesus puts it in today’s Gospel, this promise is extended to those who “remain” in him. He uses the beautiful analogy of the vine and the branches to explain what this means. “A branch cannot bear fruit on its own unless it remains on the vine ... I am the vine, you are the branches.” The idea here is that we are to be connected to Jesus so closely that our very life, our growth, our actions, indeed even our desires come from him as their source. When we are authentically rooted in Christ, and when his words remain in us, then that cannot help but transform us into people who want what Jesus wants. And when we want what he wants, why wouldn’t he give it to us?One further thought on this imagery of "vine and branches." Vineyards can be found all over our country. It seems that grapes can grow in many climates, and even grow very well in places not usually associated with vineyards. It seems that grapes prosper in non-traditional climates if they are heavily pruned. Vine growers will even go out into the fields and pluck off leaves in the middle of summer to ensure that the strength goes to produce fruit and not more vine. So in addition to remaining connected to the vine, the fruit flourishes when the vine is pruned. Yes we must remain connected to Christ but so too we must be willing to be pruned, to clip away that which is drawing away the life giving spirit of the Lord. Is there something that needs to be pruned in your life so you can be more spiritually productive?

Peace!

...from Father Gerard

Michael's AngelsParish Youth Service Ministry

Founded in memory of Michael DiMaria

“Michael’s Angels" has provided food and clothing to the homeless in New York City and the Hicksville train station. They have assisted at homeless shelters, nursing homes and institutions for at risk young people. They also organized fundraising to provide necessary medical equipment to a hospital in Ghana where our friend Fr. Derick Mawuli serves. All of these works are a remarkable expression of Pope Francis' admonition to love, “not with words but with deeds.” In the remaining months of the school year, the following events have been planned or are in process.April 19 – Planning meeting with Bethany House to begin determining how Michael’s Angels will assist this home for women and childrenMay 6 - CYO Car Wash against cancer for Dynamic DillonJune 24 – Breakfast Run to ManhattanMore detailed information will be coming. Please contact the Adult Core Team at [email protected] or 938-3846x331 with any questions and/or your availability to participate in the above.

Reaching Out to the “Afflicted & Affected” - The Church’s Response to AddictionSeveral Holy Family Staff members recently attended a conference given by DRVC Catholic Charities addressing the epidemic of addiction affecting us all. We have all seen the heartbreaking statistics which may lead us to a sense of hopelessness. The most surprising, heartbreaking, statistic given that day was that the majority of people of faith who are either afflicted or affected by addiction stated they never

considered reaching out to the church for support. We are all touched by the disease of addiction. Our pastoral team may not have a solution, we may know of some resources you haven’t tried; or you may simply need someone to talk to. Please know, there is no need to suffer alone. Call the Parish Outreach Office (938-3846 x 331) for assistance in finding the resources or person that can best help you.

Vocation Chalice ProgramLet's open the doors of our homes to Christ!

Extend Him an Invitation! He will happily answer Your Invitation! He asks everyone, no exceptions, young/old, rich/poor, single/married, dishes piled high or none at all! No problem! He’ll respond! He sees only your Heart! Let Him bring His Love, Healing, Peace and Hope to you

and your family in a very personal way. Just offer a simple prayer for men and women to respond to the call to Religious Vocations and for our Priests, Deacons, Seminarians, Sisters and Brothers and all in Consecrated Life Service, who are serving His Church. We invite you to take home the Chalice from either our 9:00am or 10:30 Sunday Masses. Please arrive 20 minutes prior to start of Mass. We ask that you return the Chalice the following Sunday to the Mass time that you received it from, at least 20 Minutes prior to the start of that Mass, so it may again be given to the next Recipient Family. Thank you for your cooperation! You may sign up at the Vocations Table, in the Gathering Space, for the Date of your choice. Let your home be “His Inn” for that week, simply praying for an increase of Vocations and for all Religious serving. No formal prayer, a simple Hail Mary, Our Father, Glory Be or the Rosary, or just quiet time in personal prayer. He is grateful You have invited Him in! Thank you!
