SEPTEMBER 20, 2015 - Twenty –Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
"If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the
servant of all." Taking a child, he placed it in the their midst,
and putting his arms around it, he said to them, "Whoever
receives one child such as this in my name, receives me." - Mk 9:35b-37a
"Boot Camp Training" by Jesus
A number of our young people will enter military service this year, and they all have to go through Basic Training or what is commonly
called “boot camp”.
I mention this, because today’s Gospel gives one glimpse of the “boot camp” training which the Apostles underwent.
Our Lord takes His apostles on a long walk, away from the crowd to teach them two important lessons.
As they walk, He talks to them of His impending death, the culmination of His work. And as they continue to walk, our Lord allows
them to walk as a group apart from Him to test what they would talk about after His presentation. So He walks somewhat ahead of
them, out of earshot, so the apostles think.
And what do they do? They begin to argue among themselves as to who is Number One among them! But even though our Lord
walks apart from them, He knows their conversation!
He had told them about His impending suffering to bring about the redemption of the human race. But they didn't seems too interested
in that. Instead they ended up arguing like little kids in the school yard, as to which one of them would be the top dog in the new earthly
kingdom, they thought Jesus was going to bring about in this world! Jesus would be the king of course, but who would be his right
hand man?
Finally when they return home, He asks them an embarrassing question: “What were you discussing?” They failed the first lesson of
boot camp. DEAD SILENCE.
So, since His words failed, He places a small child in front of them and says: “If you really want to be great, be like this child!”
The apostles were probably a little shocked for 2 reasons:
1st ð because He could read their thoughts. Not even the drill sergeant can do that, although at times they come close!
2nd ð because they associated greatness with the likes of King David and Solomon, not with little children.
Children are usually like little gofers. Go for this and go for that, and they do! Because they want to please their mommy and daddy.
Our Lord became a little child! And for about twenty years He worked in an obscure little village, doing monotonous carpentry work.
Sawing here and chiseling there.
Yet, in God’s design, it was the necessary preparation work, for the final three years of His mission.
He Himself didn’t need to prepare, but He wanted to teach us a lesson.
And so He told the Apostles that the time was coming for Him to die. Not to be an end in itself, but that through His Death and Resur-
rection, we could experience His kingdom on earth as God’s adopted children. That was the 1st lesson.
He also told them that they too must imitate Him. They too, like little children, needed to be gofers for others, for love of God.
Our Lord didn't actually use the term gofers. His words imply something a bit deeper: “This is My commandment: love one another as I
love you. No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends.”
And so it is good for us to remember the two "boot camp" lessons of our Lord:
1. ð That God so loved us that He sent His only Son into the world, in a humble manner, to be our Savior.
2. ð That we can return this love by imitating Him, by humbly laying down our lives daily (sacrificing our own will and desires), for love of God and our neighbor.
Priests and Religious lay down their lives daily for love of God, and for the salvation of those souls entrusted to their care. Married
persons and parents lay down their lives daily, for love of God and their spouse and children. Military, police, fire fighters, and other
emergency persons lay down their lives daily for love of God, and for those they protect, defend and rescue. All spiritually mature
Christians are called upon by Christ, to lay down their lives daily in a variety of Christian ways, for love of God and neighbor.
May He give each one of us the strength, especially through the Eucharist, to do so!

Oremus: A Guide to Catholic Prayer
Do you Know How to Pray? For many of us, prayer becomes a source of frustra-tion as we struggle to calm our minds and to find even a few minutes to pray. In our busy lives, prayer is seen as a luxury, when in reality it is at the foundation of a healthy spiritual life. The good news is that you can overcome your difficulties with prayer, and it is easer than you might think. Over the course of eight weeks the Oremus study program teaches you the essentials of an effective and fruitful prayer life. In Oremus you will become aware of God’s presence in your life, discover the simple yet profound steps of Catholic prayer, learn how to respond to God and express yourself in prayer, and grow in your relationship with God and those around you.
Oremus will be offered at Holy Name of Jesus Parish Monday evenings beginning October 5 and running through November 30 from 6:30-8:00 pm. The cost is $15 for the participant study book. To register, contact Judy Borchardt at 715-842-4543. For more information on Oremus please visit the website: http://ascensionpress.com/t/category/study-programs/catholic-prayer/oremus.

Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II orphanage and the 2016 Youth Mission trip to Casa Hogar
Sun., Oct. 4th, 2015 from 6:30pm-8:00pm in Holy Name of Jesus Church
As Catholics we have a strong commitment to Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy. These needs extend to people all over the world, including the children who live at our Diocesan orphanage, Casa Hogar Juan Pablo II, in Lurin, Peru.
Fr. Bob, and others, will share the history of the orphan-age and stories of the children. Along with giving insight into how we can work together to make a difference both here and there.
One of the ways that will be discussed will be the 2016 Youth Ministry Mission trip currently being planned for July 5-14, 2016. This mission trip will be for teens 16 years and older who have a true desire to make a difference in the lives of others. Missionary efforts will begin before we leave through a variety of different events. And while in Peru, the group will work at the orphanage and spend time with the children.
This is a combined parish youth ministry trip. All teens, young adults and parents, from both parishes, are encour-aged to attend to find out more about Casa Hogar and the trip. If you are not able to go to Peru next summer, you can join and help with the events, drives, fundraisers and other activities that are being scheduled from now until July 2016. If you are unable to attend, but would like to know more about the mission trip, please call Noel Furger at 715-842-4543 ext 4 for more information.. Hope to see you there!
