Second Reading -- I am content with weaknesses and hardships for the sake of Christ (2 Corinthians 12:7-10). Gospel -- The people said: "Where did this man get all this? We will have Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament every Friday beginning with Mass at 7:30 am and ending with Benediction at 12:00 pm. We will continue with our Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament on First Fridays beginning at the 7:30 am Mass, Bene-diction at 12:00 pm, and Adoration until the 5:00 pm Mass.

OBSTACLES The prophet Ezekiel, Saint Paul, and the Lord Jesus share something in common in today's scripture readings. They all experience obstacles to their ministry. Ezekiel is summoned to prophesy to the Israelites, who are "[h]ard of face and obstinate of heart" (Ezekiel 2:4). Saint Paul recounts how he has been given a "thorn in the flesh" (2 Corin-thians 12:7). The Lord Jesus is unable to perform many signs in his native place. The Gospel tells us that "[he] was amazed at their lack of faith" (Mark 6:6). We too sometimes encounter obstacles as we travel along the journey of faith. So often we experience weakness on this journey. Let the words of the Lord to Saint Paul encourage us today: "My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness" (2 Co-rinthians 12:9). Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week's Treasure mentioned the "Nuns of the Battlefield," religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the "Nuns of the Battlefield" stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En los calendarios antiguos se celebraba la memoria de san Cristóbal el día 10 de este mes. Pero, con la reforma del Concilio Vaticano II este pobre santo se quedó sin trabajo sólo por el hecho de no poder comprobar su existencia. No fue que la reforma del Concilio Vaticano II quisiera haber negado al pobre de Cristóbal ni a tantos otros santos que fueron quitados del Santoral Romano. Sólo buscaba hacer lugar para nuevos santos y beatos; y menos mal, porque eventualmente el Papa Juan Pablo II canonizó y beatificó a más de mil personas durante su pontificado. Muchos de estos santos no son tan bien conocidos como nuestro amigo san Cristóbal. Aunque ya no está en el calendario eclesiástico, Cristóbal continúa en los tableros de muchos carros ofreciendo su servicio de protección para los automovilistas. Esta chambita la consiguió porque ayudaba a cruzar el río a personas en camino, hasta que un día le tocó cargar con el niño Dios. Đức Thánh Cha dùng bữa tối với người vô gia cư
Tối thứ Sáu, 29 tháng Sáu, vừa qua, 280 người vô gia cư đã được mời dự bữa tối tại Roma với vị tân Hồng y Konrad Krajewski, là vị phụ trách cơ quan bác ái của Tòa thánh. Ngài vừa mới được tước vị hồng y ngày hôm trước.
Đgh. Phanxicô đã bất ngờ đến tham dự bữa tối này, gây kinh ngạc cho vị hồng y, các khách mời, và khoảng 60 người phục vụ bữa ăn. Đức Thánh Cha vừa cười vừa hóm hỉnh bảo Đhy. Krajewski: “Tôi đến đây vì người nghèo, chứ không vì ngài.” Đức hồng y thường được dân chúng quý mến gọi là cha Corrado (thay vì Konrad) vì ngài gần gũi phục vụ người nghèo.
Đức Thánh Cha dành hai giờ chia sẻ của ăn và trò chuyện với những người vô gia cư giống như một cuộc gặp gỡ gia đình. Ngài nghe chuyện của họ về những nỗi thống khổ cũng như niềm hy vọng của họ.
Một trong những người đồng bàn tại bữa tối này là một tín đồ Hồi giáo, đến từ nước Senegal. Ông nói rằng mình đã được ăn trưa với Đgh. Gioan Phaolô II và Đgh. Bênêđictô XVI, và hôm nay lại dùng bữa với Đgh. Phanxicô. Nghe vậy, Đức Thánh Cha nói đùa: “Ông hãy làm một bộ sưu tập các vị giáo hoàng!” - Vaticannews.va

Các điều răn là đường dẫn tới tự do
Trong buổi triều yết chung vào ngày thứ Tư, 20 tháng Sáu vừa qua, Đgh. Phanxicô tiếp tục giảng về mười Điều răn, gọi đây là “mười Lời giúp sống theo Giao ước.” Ngài nói rằng Kinh thánh (Xuất hành 20:1) không gọi đây là “điều răn,” mà là những “lời” do Thiên Chúa phán.
Đây là những “điều răn khách quan,” nhưng theo ngài, sự khác biệt giữa lời và điều răn là rất quan trọng. “Lời là một phương tiện cốt yếu cho liên hệ đặt trên đối thoại. Chúa Cha tạo dựng mọi sự bằng lời mình, và Chúa Con là Lời mặc xác phàm. Tình thương được nuôi dưỡng nhờ lời, cũng như việc giáo dục hoặc cộng tác được dưỡng nuôi nhờ lời.”
Khi trao ban mười Lời hay mười Điều răn, Thiên Chúa tiếp tục sự đối thoại trong liên hệ giao ước với dân Ngài, mời gọi họ và chúng ta định hướng cuộc đời trong liên hệ thương yêu với Ba Ngôi Thiên Chúa.
Đức Thánh Cha nói rằng con rắn, kẻ cám dỗ, được nói đến trong sách Sáng thế, tìm cách thuyết phục ông bà nguyên tổ rằng Thiên Chúa là một bạo chúa đòi hỏi con người vâng phục một cách mù quáng. Nhưng Thiên Chúa là Cha yêu thương tất cả mọi người, quan tâm đến sự an nguy của mọi con cái mình.
Rồi Đgh. Phanxicô nói về việc Chúa Thánh Thần giúp chúng ta đón nhận và vâng theo luật Chúa như thế nào, không vì miễn cưỡng, mà từ sự nhận biết đây là lối đi dẫn đến sự hoàn thành. Ngài nói: “Các Điều răn là lối đi dẫn đến tự do, vì chúng là lời của Chúa Cha, giúp chúng ta tự do tiến bước trên con đường này… với tấm lòng của những người con.” - VaticanNews.va
