A TUMBNAI ISTORY OF RINDGE

A few permanent setters started cearing the and n

1752 but soon after the destruction of the Indian Viage

of St Francis in Canada by Rogers' Rangers and the astndian raids in New Hampshire in 175 and 760  the

permanent setters started coming into Rindge in arger

 numbers

After a compicated background of transactions,  the

and grants by the King and coonia government desended

to a group of mainy Portsmouth men caed the "MasoniProprietors w( o, in tu,  aid out ton in the south

weste part of the State, encouraged setters, and Rindge

was amed for either one of the proprietors, John Rindge,

or, more probaby, fr  Danie Rindge, a member of the

Goveor's Counci,  a grandson After sufficient sette

ment had occurred, the Ton received a charter in the name

of King George the Third and by command of Goveor Went worth in 178  The Town government and Congregationa

Church organiatin were synonymous for many decades At

the end of the eighteenth century, members of other

denominations were excused from paying the ministeria tax

and after the adoption of a State statute in 181 Rindge

was among the first, if not the first, in the State to

acnowedge the vioation of individua rights in the maintenance of a municipa parish

In 175 the first Congregationa Church was buit on

the present site, and the first minister,  the Reverend Seth

Dean, arrived Today's Meeting House was buit in 174 and

175,  remodeed t east tree times s ince,  and ony in the

ast few years has a written and detaed agreement been

made between the Curch and the Ton as to wic  o rgani  a

tion ons and is responsibe for what parts of the

 struture

common, the Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 12

and is now a well equipped and organied unit in the

service of the Town and surrounding communities

For many years after the founding of the Town, the

economy consisted mainly of subsistence farming, raising

and procuring rm the land and forest most of their food,

clothing and shelter with only the barest necessities

imported Gradually they were able to produce a surplus

to market in the surrounding tows and Boston, and in the. ,  frst half of the nneteenth century the Rndge farms were

thriving enterprises with perhaps 75% of the land in Town

clear of trees and fenced in by stone walls After the

extension of the rairoads west and the arrival of western

produce in the Eas,  the farms of Northern New E ngland

became competitively less productive However, even in

the last 1th and early 20th centuries, sbsistence farms existed which saw only a few hundred dollars in cash during

the year but raised large and successful families n

recent times farming has consisted mainly of shipping milk

to assachusetts (Gardner and Worcester) and raising

 produce

From early in the Tows history, starting with a saw

mill near rassy nd, many small manufacturing businesses,

woodworking shops tanneries, and even mines, wer

eveloped - many using the small streams and pond outlets

for power The onadnock Ra ilroad,  with a station at West

Rindge, was constructed from Winchendon to eterborough in

872, and in 187 the New Hampshire Register, published i

laremont, listed the following enteprses in Rindge by name and location J  box companies, fancy wo o denware,  saw

horses, spools and bobbins, J  wodenware shops, J  back

 smiths, 2  carpenters, 2 masons, 2 painters, 1 wheelwright,
