for a medium density development

on the northern side of the Hobart Rivulet. The designers and the HCC

have taken measures to retain as

much of the natural features as

possible. There will be public

access to the Rivulet. City Christian Church is relocating from

its present Odeon site in Liverpool

site of Boag’s warehouse. The

development application is for

MACQUARIE STREET

TOWNSCAPE PROJECT At a recent meeting of the SHPA

Inc. it was decided to ask the HCC

to recommence discussions with

regards to the Macquarie Street

area. A comprehensive draft study

into certain aspects of the

streetscape were undertaken in

2002, and the Association believes

that now is the time to

reinvestigate the matter in the

light of the new traffic lane at the

Southern Outlet, the proposed new

City of Hobart Planning Scheme, 2009 , and a push for more

sustainable transport in the area.

House, Hobart 7004. There is

currently no State-wide integrated

approach to cat management in

Tasmania and legislation is finally

being drafted by the State

Government (DPIW 6233 4031).

This is wonderful news for our

native animals, especially the

officially endangered or vulnerable

species, including the Swift Parrot,

Forty Spotted Pardalote and

Eastern Barred Bandicoot: all found

in our suburb. It is also wonderful

news for cats themselves. Currently

the RSPCA Hobart Animal Shelter and the Hobart Cat Centre take on

the unenviable role of accepting

surrendered cats for euthanasia and

adoption in the Greater Hobart area.

They euthanise over 2,500 cats each

year: a devastating and shocking

number. Something has to change,

please support this legislation. It

appears the new legislation will

require the de-sexing and micro-

chipping of pet cats and could result

in funding for community education.

It could also result in funding to

provide subsidised de-sexing and

additional funding to assist the

RSPCA Hobart Animal Shelter and

the Hobart Cat Centre in providing a

larger range of services. If you are

interested in cats and in ensuring

the legislation is thorough now is the

time to voice your thoughts to David

Llewellyn.
