SOUTH HOBART MURAL
PROJECT Come and vote for the artist you
want to paint the Wall of the
Badminton Centre. There will be an
exhibition at the South Hobart
Community Centre from 27th-29th
July 5:00-7:00 pm, from 30th-31st
July 3:00-5:00 pm, and on Saturday
1st August 9:00-12 noon. On
Saturday morning, come and help
develop a vision for the future of
South Hobart. The vision will
become part of the Mural. A
“‘facilitated” workshop will get our
imaginations into gear and have us
thinking “outside the box” about
what our suburb could be like in
2050. See www.southhobart.org for
details.
MONTHLY CALENDAR OF
EVENTS IN SOUTH HOBART
It must be winter hibernation time.
I was unable to find information
about many events occurring in
South Hobart over the next month.
Please email [email protected] if
you would like your event included in
our calendar next month. The
dedicated Bushcare groups
thankfully continue to brave the
weather and enjoy South Hobart in
winter. In your hibernation you
could spare a thought for the cat
management legislation currently
being drafted in Tasmania and, in
July, voice you opinions to David

have taken measures to retain as
much of the natural features as
possible. There will be public
access to the Rivulet. City Christian Church is relocating from

MACQUARIE STREET
TOWNSCAPE PROJECT At a recent meeting of the SHPA
Inc. it was decided to ask the HCC
to recommence discussions with
regards to the Macquarie Street
area. A comprehensive draft study
into certain aspects of the
streetscape were undertaken in
2002, and the Association believes
that now is the time to
reinvestigate the matter in the
light of the new traffic lane at the
Southern Outlet, the proposed new
City of Hobart Planning Scheme, 2009 , and a push for more
sustainable transport in the area.

House, Hobart 7004. There is
currently no State-wide integrated
approach to cat management in
Tasmania and legislation is finally
being drafted by the State
Government (DPIW 6233 4031).
This is wonderful news for our
native animals, especially the
officially endangered or vulnerable
species, including the Swift Parrot,
Forty Spotted Pardalote and
Eastern Barred Bandicoot: all found
in our suburb. It is also wonderful
news for cats themselves. Currently
the RSPCA Hobart Animal Shelter and the Hobart Cat Centre take on
the unenviable role of accepting
surrendered cats for euthanasia and
adoption in the Greater Hobart area.
They euthanise over 2,500 cats each
year: a devastating and shocking
number. Something has to change,
please support this legislation. It
appears the new legislation will
require the de-sexing and micro-
chipping of pet cats and could result
in funding for community education.
It could also result in funding to
provide subsidised de-sexing and
additional funding to assist the
RSPCA Hobart Animal Shelter and
the Hobart Cat Centre in providing a
larger range of services. If you are
interested in cats and in ensuring
the legislation is thorough now is the
time to voice your thoughts to David
Llewellyn.
RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN

developments of note in South
Hobart recently. Hobart City Council has recently approved an
application for major works at Jane Franklin Hall. There will be 40

dining room, new administrative
facilities, together with extensive
landscaping and car parking spaces.
The matter of street parking and
general traffic movements will be
addressed. A new housing
