Welcome to St Margaret’s IfieldSunday 1st January 2017

The Naming and Circumcision of Jesus

All are welcome to St Margaret’s and we encourage all to take part fully in this service. If you have mobility issues that make it difficult for you to come

and receive communion or laying-on-of-hands for healing, should you want to, then do please notify our sides-people, and we will come to you.

Please do stay for coffee served at the back of church after the service. There is a toilet at the back of church should you need to use it during the service.

THE GATHERINGWe stand at the entrance of the choir and priest and sing:

Angels from the realms of glory,Wing your flight o'er all the earth;Ye who sang creation's story,Now proclaim Messiah's birth:

Come and worship,Christ the newborn king;Come and worship,Worship Christ, the newborn King!

Shepherds, in the fields abiding,Watching o'er your flocks by night,God with man is now residing,Yonder shines the infant Light;

Sages, leave your contemplations,Brighter visions beam afar;Seek the great desire of nations,Ye have seen His natal star;

THE PRAYER OF PREPARATIONAll Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires

known, and from whom no secrets are hidden: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYERS OF PENITENCE Celebrant Our Lord Jesus Christ said: The first commandment is this:

‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is the only Lord. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength’. The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself’. There is no other commandment greater than these. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

All Amen. Lord have mercy.

Celebrant Hear the words of the angel to Joseph: ‘You shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins’. Therefore let us seek the forgiveness of God through Jesus the Saviour of the world.

All Almighty God, our heavenly Father, we have sinned against you and against our neighbour in thought and word and deed, through negligence, through weakness, through our own deliberate fault. We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us, forgive us all that is past and grant that we may serve you in newness of life to the glory of your name. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God, who forgives all who truly repent, have mercy upon us, pardon and deliver us from all our sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and keep us in life eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

Nahum Tate.WHILE SHEPHERDS WATCHED their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down And glory shone around.

'Fear not' said he, for mighty dread Had seized their troubled mind; 'Glad tidings of great joy I bring To you and all mankind.

'To you in David's town this day Is born of David's line A Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, And this shall be the sign.

'The heavenly babe you there shall find To human view displayed, All meanly wrapped in swaddling bands, And in a manger laid.'

Thus spake the seraph; and forthwith Appeared a shining throng Of angels, praising God, who thus Addressed their joyful song:

'All glory be to God on high And on the earth be peace; Goodwill henceforth from heaven to men Begin and never cease.'

Celebrant Jesus, true joy of loving hearts, we turn unfilled to you again.

All Come and be known to us in the breaking of the bread.

The Eucharistic PrayerThe Lord be with you

All and also with you.

Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give thanks and praise.

All glory and honour be yours always and everywhere, mighty creator, ever-living God, through Jesus Christ our Lord. We praise you that on the eighth day he was circumcised in obedience to the law of Moses, that he might fulfil the law and reveal to us your grace and truth. For here is foreshadowed his perfect self-offering upon the cross, the shedding of his blood to set us free from sin and death. In baptism we die with him and are raised in him, that we might walk in newness of life, and proclaim the wonders of his saving name. Therefore with all the angels of heaven we lift our voices to proclaim the glory of your name and sing our joyful hymn of praise:

The Sanctus

Bernadette Farrell©1985 Bernadette Farrell. Published by OCPHoly, holy, holy, Lord God of pow'r, Lord God of might, Lord God of pow'r and might. Heav’n and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.Blessed, blessed, blessed, blessed is he who comes in the name, who comes in the Lord’s own name. Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.Hosanna, hosanna, hosanna in the highest.

We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord; and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpoured may be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.

On the night before he died he had supper with his friends and, taking bread, he praised you. He broke the bread, gave it to them and said: Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.

When supper was ended he took the cup of wine. Again he praised you, gave it to them and said: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did, in him we

plead with confidence his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross.Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation, we proclaim his death and resurrection until he comes in glory.Praise to you Lord Jesus:

All Dying you destroyed our death, rising you restored our life:Lord Jesus, come in glory.

Lord of all life, help us to work together for that day when your kingdom comes and justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth. Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving arms and bring us with St Margaret and all the saints to feast at your table in heaven.Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, forever and ever.

All Amen.

The Lord’s PrayerAll Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done,on earth as in heaven.Give us today our daily bread.Forgive us our sins,as we forgive those who sin against us.Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yoursnow and for ever. Amen.

The Breaking of the Bread

The Priest breaks the consecrated bread

We break this bread to share in the body of Christ. All Though we are many, we are one body,

because we all share in one bread.

The Giving of CommunionJesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Blessed are those who are called to his supper.

All Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.

Come, not because you are strong, but because you are weak. Come, not because any goodness of your own gives you any right to come, but because you need mercy and help.Come, because you love the Lord a little, and would like to love him more.Come, because he loves you and gave himself for you.

We sing the Agnus Dei.

A Gregory Murray, OSB 1905-1992©1975, 1987 McCrimmon Publishing Ltd

Communion HymnsEdward Caswall.

SEE, AMID THE WINTER'S SNOW, Born for us on earth below, See, the Lamb of God appears, Promised from eternal years.

Hail, thou ever-blessèd morn! Hail, redemption's happy dawn! Sing through all Jerusalem:Christ is born in Bethlehem!

Lo, within a manger liesHe who built the starry skies,He who throned in height sublimeSits amid the cherubim.

Say, ye holy shepherds, say, What your joyful news today; Wherefore have ye left your sheep On the lonely mountain steep?

'As we watched at dead of night, Lo, we saw a wondrous light: Angels singing, "Peace on earth"

Told us of the Saviour's birth.'

Sacred Infant, all divine, What a tender love was Thine, Thus to come from highest bliss Down to such a world as this!

Teach, O teach us, holy Child, By Thy face so meek and mild, Teach us to resemble Thee In Thy sweet humility.

The Prayers after CommunionCelebrant Eternal God, whose incarnate Son was given the Name of

Saviour: grant that we who have shared in this sacrament of our salvation may live out our years in the power of the Name above all other names, Jesus Christ our Lord.

All Amen

All Almighty God, we thank you for feeding us with the body and blood of your son Jesus Christ. Through him we offer you our souls and bodies to be a living sacrifice. Send us out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.

A NEW YEAR RENEWAL OF COVENANT Celebrant: God made a covenant with the people of Israel, calling

them to be a holy nation, chosen to bear witness to his steadfast love. This covenant was renewed in Jesus Christ our Lord, in his life, work, death and resurrection. In him all people may be set free from sin and its power, and united in love and

obedience. In this covenant God promises us new life in Christ. For our part we promise to live no longer for ourselves but for God. And so we pray:Lord God, holy Father, since you have called us through Christ to share in your gracious covenant, we take upon ourselves with joy the yoke of obedience and, for love of you, commit ourselves anew to seeking and doing your perfect will. We are no longer our own but yours.

All I am no longer my own but yours.Put me to what you will; rank me with whom you will.Put me to doing; put me to suffering.Let me be employed for you, or laid aside for you; exalted for you, or brought low for you. Let me be full; let me be empty.Let me have all things; let me have nothing.I freely and wholeheartedly yield all things to your pleasure and disposal. And now, glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you are mine and I am yours. So be it. And the Covenant which I have made on Earth, let it be ratified in Heaven. Amen.

THE BLESSINGCelebrant The love of the Lord Jesus draw you to himself, the power

of the Lord Jesus strengthen you in his service, the joy of
