FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK… Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord marks the end of the Christmas Season. In this event the Holy Trinity is revealed. When Jesus was baptized in the River Jordan by John the Baptist, the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus like a dove, and a voice came from above saying, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” (Luke 3:22b) The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is a day to celebrate our faith in Christ, the anointed Servant of God. Rising from the waters, Jesus began his ministry of healing, teaching and proclaiming the Good News of salvation. We, the baptized, share in the mission of Christ. We are called to spread the Good News through our actions of justice, charity and love. May we be inspired to renew our baptismal commitment daily, and become instruments of God’s mercy in this world. God’s Blessings, Fr.

LAS POSADAS AT SFDS Las Posadas is a nine-day celebration celebrated chiefly in Mexico and by Mexican-Americans every evening beginning Dec. 16 and ending Dec. 24. A 400 year old tradition, two people dress up as Mary and Joseph. Certain houses are designated to be an "inn". The head of the procession will have a candle inside a paper lampshade. At each house, the resident responds by singing a song and Mary and Joseph are finally recognized and allowed to enter. Once the “innkeepers” let them in, the group of guests come into the home and kneel around the Nativity scene to pray (typically, the Rosary). Individuals may actually play the various parts of Mary (María) and Joseph with attendants such as angels and shepherds acquired along the way, or the pilgrims may carry images of the holy personages instead. The procession will be followed by musicians, with the entire procession singing posadas such as pedir posada. At the end of each night’s journey, there will be Christmas carols (villancicos), children will break open star-shaped piñatas to obtain candy and fruit hidden inside, and there will be a feast.

CHILI COOK-OFF The St.Francis de Sales Chili Cook-Off will be held on Jan. 23, 2016 in the Parish Hall starting at 6:30 p.m. If you have a special or secret chili recipe or just feel your chili is the best, bring in a pot of chili, along with the recipe and let’s have some fun while we taste it and vote for a winner. There will be 4 categories of chili to enter: MEAT, VEGETARIAN, FIRE DEPT, and SURPRISE INGREDIENT. Beans are allowed, but no pasta. Each participant will supply a crock pot of their chili. The participant also needs to be present to serve samples to the voters. A prize will be awarded in each category. After the voting is over, everyone is invited to enjoy a delicious chili supper along with all the “fixens”. Admission is free for all Chili Makers. Non-participants are asked to donate $5.00 or $4.00 for Seniors and children over 12. We are in need of chili makers and anyone who would like to volunteer to help out at the event. Sign up sheets will be posted in the chapel foyer the weekend of Dec. 26-27, and will be up for several weeks. Remember, the judging is done by the votes of the guests so encourage your family and friends to come to the Chili Cook-Off and vote for you! If you have any questions or would like to volunteer to help out, please contact Ken Cramer (262) 327-4330 or [email protected].
