WELLINGTON AFC Club History
Formed in 1892 we are proud to be an FA Charter Standard Community Club. Initially the Club played in leagues based around Taunton and Tiverton. In the early 1960s it gained promotion to the Somerset Senior League and succeeded in achieving Western League status in 1978 which has been retained ever since, making the Club one of the League’s longest continuously serving members. The First Team entered the Western League in the First Division in 1978/79 season and has played at Premier Division level from 1981/82 to 1984/85 and 2008/09 to 2010/11. The team were promoted as First Division Champions at the end of the 2016/17 season. In their first season back in the in Premier Division the team finished a creditable 15th, they also reached the semi-final of the Somerset Premier Cup losing 4-1 away to Southern League Paulton Rovers. Last season the team finished in 16th place but are hoping to improve on this in the forthcoming season. All other seasons were played at Division One level. The Club’s Reserve side play in the Devon and Exeter League Division One. Having finished eighth for two seasons, unfortunately, the team struggled during the 2017/18 season and last season improved to once again finish in eighth place and will play at the same level this year. Having played in the Devon and Exeter League for a number of seasons the A Team transferred to Division Three of the Taunton Saturday League last season where they finished a very creditable third and could be promoted to Division Two for the forthcoming season. The Club’s Ladies side finished ninth in the Somerset County Women’s League First Division last season but, with the introduction of new players are hoping to improve this season. The team play a full role in both the playing and non-playing aspects of the club. This season the Club will be running 21 teams in its Youth and Mini Sections. These teams see both boys and girls playing from the age of eight right through to eighteen. The Club also has three Disability teams. Six of the Youth Teams won the Sportsmanship Awards for their Age Groups last season and the Disability Teams won the Somerset FA Award for Disability Club of the Year. During the last year the Club launched its new website – www.wellingtonafc.co.uk and is making full use of its Facebook and Twitter accounts which have all proved very successful.
We continue to work with the local Council’s and Wellington Sports Federation on the Taunton Deane Pitch Strategy which will hopefully result in the Club moving to a larger ground and bring the majority of football pitches in the town to one site. Outside of its core footballing activities the Club is home to several darts and skittles teams and it runs a full programme of social events for members and non-members alike. The Function Room and Lounge are available for hire. (Please contact the Clubhouse Manager – Jenny Oxby on 01823 665410 for details)
MATCH REPORT
SHEPTON MALLET 2 1 WELLINGTON
Wellington’s young side could hold their heads high despite suffering their first defeat under new manager Tim Legg at Shepton Mallet. At the end of August, Wellington had been thumped at Shepton in the FA Vase but this performance was a huge improvement and the new-look squad were desperately unlucky not to come away with at least a point from another encouraging display. Legg, who has had to rebuild the side following the departure of previous boss Clive Jones, went into a tricky fixture without skipper Glen Wright and new defender Jake Horsey – both unavailable – while winger Ian Bellinger was suspended. That meant two more debutants – defender Neil Last and wide man Luke Boyle – with promising midfielder Aaron Hawkings earning a well-deserved promotion from the reserves. Wellington knew they were going to be up against it in the first half as they played up the Shepton slope and with the elements in their faces but they defended well throughout the goalless 45 minutes. Indeed, it was the visitors who tended to look more threatening with Boyle firing just wide after nine minutes and then George Sinnott having a ‘goal’ disallowed seven minutes before the break. But all the hard work was shortly undone within two minutes of the restart as Shepton’s danger man Tyrone Tucker-Dixon was given too much space on the right and his low cross somehow found its way into the net. The Wellington reaction was swift as they drew level within five minutes. Sinnott burst down the left and also sent in a low cross, which was neatly dispatched at the far post by Boyle.
The game was evenly-balanced but turned in the home side’s favour on 69 minutes when they were lucky to be awarded a corner as Tucker-Dixon sliced a long-range effort high and wide. The ball was duly floated over and defender Keiran Bailey rose unchallenged to score with a thumping header to restore Shepton’s lead. The final 20 minutes saw Wellington take the game to the home team as they went in search of a second equaliser and they felt hard-done-by when their penalty appeals were turned down after a cross struck the arm of a home defender. It was a strong display by Wellington and, despite the result, Legg will be able to draw on far more positives than negatives from his squad, which is showing a great deal of early promise.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Striker Ollie Holman was named Man of the Match and was presented with the award by Committee Member, Steve Bird

TODAY’S VISTORS HALLEN
We extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Hallen Football Club for today’s Toolstation Western League Premier Division game. The club was formed in 1949 by members of a new community living at Lawrence Weston on the outskirts of Bristol, which had been developed shortly after World War Two. The club was named Lawrence Weston Athletic and played in the Bristol & District League, and it has moved forward steadily since moving to the village of Hallen in 1979, to conform with League Ground grading. The club became Lawrence Weston Hallen when it moved to Moorhouse Lane, joining the Gloucestershire County League in 1982, and under that title were runners up 1987-88, and Champions 1988-89, after which the club dropped Lawrence Weston from its title to become known as simply Hallen. The club completed the double in 1992-93, when winning the Gloucestershire Challenge Trophy and the League title. Promotion was achieved, joining the Hellenic League Division One, and after further improvements to the facilities (the erection of floodlights and a 200-seater stand), a runner-up position in 1996–97 led to another step up, to the Hellenic League Premier Division. The club joined the Western League First Division for season 2000-01. The club finished fourth in its first season in the Western League and reached the last sixteen of the F.A.Vase losing to Brigg Town 6-5 (aet). Further progress was made when new manager Gary Damone led the team to the Division One title in Season 2003-4, and fourth place in the Premier Division at the first attempt. The club also reached the final of the GFA Trophy and were denied a place in the first round of the F.A. Cup when losing to Nationwide Conference side Canvey Island in the fourth and final qualifying round. This success saw Gary Damone leave to join Southern League Taunton Town which in turn saw some Hallen players tempted away, Gary returned to the club for the 2009-10 season and brought with him many Ex-players too. In 2009-10 the club finished a disappointing twelfth, but did lift the Les Phillips Cup for the first time. The club saw the departure of Gary Damone in 2010, after a disappointing start to the season. Former Club Captain Paul Owen was given the task of steering the team to safety. With just one win prior to taking over in November, he changed fortunes around and they were safe from relegation with six games left. Owen's first full season (2011-12) as manager saw the club challenging for the title, eventually finishing fourth. Season 2012-13 saw no repeat of a challenge for promotion, but the season was kept alive by reaching the final of the Les Phillips League Cup, where they unfortunately lost to Willand Rovers 1-0. Paul stepped down at the end of the season and was replaced by Jamie Hillman, previously Hengrove manager. The 2013-14 saw the club lift the GFA Trophy for a third time and reach the fifth round of the FA Vase losing away to West Auckland Town. Since then the club has seen a number of management changes but has remained in the Premier Division. Last season the team was managed by former player Ray Johnstone, who guided Odd Down to the title in 2016, he was assisted by Tony Davis, another former Hallen player and the team finished in twelfth place in the league. For this season Ray has appointed Dean Horseman as his Assistant and they are currently in fourth place in the Premier Division.

EXTRACT FROM TOOLSTATION BULLETIN
3RD NOVEMBER 2019
Midweek Action: 11 of the 16 Les Phillips Cup matches beat the weather during the week, with the tie at Brislington postponed due to floodlight issues. Games in Devon were worst hit, with Buckland, Exmouth and Tavistock all seeing their matches called off, while excessive rainfall also meaning Bishops Lydeard and Keynsham will play their first round tilt at a later date. Tuesday evening saw three of the four away sides prevail, with Bitton requiring penalties to see off the challenge of Ashton & Backwell United at the Lancer Scott Stadium. After the Premier Division side stormed into an early two-goal lead through Karim Rendall and Josh Egan, Ashton produced an excellent fightback, leading with 12 minutes left on the clock thanks to Paul Uppington, Joe Bishop and an own-goal. Bitton weren’t behind for long however, and after a goal from Mitch Tippins had seen them secure the 3-3 draw, the higher ranked team then beat their hosts 5-3 on spot kicks. Goals in either half from Aron Robbins helped Hallen defeat Devizes 3-0 at Nursteed Road, while Street saw off Radstock by the same scoreline thanks to efforts from Kyle Strange, Kameron Andrews and Olly Pearson. There was late heartbreak for Welton who were denied a penalty shootout away at Cribbs, after George Kellow scored in the 3rd minute of stoppage time to give the home side victory by the slimmest of margins. Wednesday saw a plethora of goals, with five of the seven victors scoring at least four times during their wins. Wells City were one of the teams to flex their goalscoring muscles, with Craig Herrod, Tom Hill, Harry Foster and Harvey Hadrill all on target during their 4-0 victory away at Corsham. Another team to win big away from home were Shepton Mallet who stormed out of the blocks during their 4-0 defeat of Hengrove. Jack Fillingham and Aaron Seviour each struck in the opening five minutes to put the visitors in control, with Tyrone Tucker-Dixon adding a third midway through the first half prior to Fillingham wrapping up victory with his second of the evening. Another side to make a fast start were Clevedon Town, where first half doubles from both Jay Murray and Syd Camper proved enough to hold off a fightback from Chipping Sodbury, with the
Seasiders eventually winning 4-2. Bridgwater Town went one better than Clevedon, with three goals after half-time helping them beat Odd Down 5-2. A pair of early goals from Jack Taylor looked to have set Bridgwater up for an easy victory, but the Bath side had other ideas, and were level at the break after Adnan Hiroli and Harry Keen each found the back of
the net. Tom Ellis then headed the home side back in front ten minutes into the second half, before the same man then scored again seven minutes from time to put the result beyond doubt. There was still time for Taylor to complete his hat-trick, with the skipper finishing well after being teed up by strike-partner Steve Murray. Warminster Town were another team to hit five, with Francois Allen, Lewis Graham, George Butler, Nyke Fletcher and Jack Miluk all netting during their comprehensive victory over Portishead. In the most surprising result of the round, Longwell Green Sports managed to claim a 1-0 win away at Premier Division outfit Westbury. The game didn’t involve a tonne of goalscoring chances, so when Luke Bryan struck for the visitors midway through the second half it turned out to be enough for them to grab victory. At Oaklands Park, Roman Glass St George were forced to come from behind to beat Premier Division strugglers Bridport. Having suffered two heavy defeats over recent times, things looked rosy for Bridport when Max Westlake handed them the lead just prior to the half-time break. Roman Glass have been bang in form recently however, and after Matt Guy grabbed an equaliser, George Box then struck in injury time to complete the turnaround and hand them a spot in the second round FA Vase: Buckland Athletic progressed to the next round thanks to a 1-0 win away at South West Peninsula League leaders St Austell. The game was decided in the closing stages, with Stuart Bowker scoring the only goal 20 minutes from time to knock out their Cornish hosts. It was a successful day all round for the Western League sides, with Plymouth Parkway defeating Brockenhurst 3-0. Parkway were rewarded for their strong start to the game when Jordan Copp put them ahead in the 25th minute, with top scorer Adam Carter then doubling their advantage just before the break. Brockenhurst have an impressive home record this season, but they were no match for the Devon side who added a third 15 minutes from time through substitute Teigan Rosenquest. In the third game to survive, Warminster Town were terrific during their 3-1 win at home to Portchester, with first half goals from Francois Allen and Jack Miluk paving the way for their second round victory. Cribbs made it four out of four for Western League sides on Sunday afternoon thanks to a 3-1 extra-time victory away at Thornbury Town. Having gone ahead on the hour mark thanks to a Jake Hodgson header, Cribbs were denied victory during normal time, when Brandon Benjamin levelled affairs in the 83rd minute. The away side took no time at all in regaining their advantage during the extra 30 minutes, with Jordan Yeo forcing an own goal within 60 seconds of the restart. Then, with 119 minutes on the clock, Cribbs confirmed their spot in the next round thanks to a well taken goal from Ethan Feltham.
Premier Division: Hallen made a dream start to the month of November, moving up to fourth spot following a big 5-0 win at home to Brislington. The home side only led by one goal at the break with the in-form Aron Robbins putting them ahead in the 13th minute. Robbins then struck again early in the second half, taking advantage while one of the visiting players was spending time in the sin-bin. The final half-hour of the contest belonged exclusively to Sacha Tong, who took just 15 minutes to produce a perfect hat-trick, scoring with both his left and right feet, before completing his treble with a header as Brislington capitulated in the closing stages. There was also a big win for Westbury, who bagged five second half goals to claim a 6-2 victory away at Keynsham Town. Having given his side a half-time lead, Callum Demkiv took it upon himself to double his personal and Westbury’s tally early in the second half to make it 2-0 to the visitors. Joe Stradling then got in on the act, scoring Westbury’s third, before Matt Long pulled a goal back for Keynsham with a tidy finish at the back-post. The Wiltshire side regained control during the final quarter with Ricky Hulbert restoring their two-goal lead prior to a late double from Sam Jordan which sandwiched Jamie Price’s effort for the hosts. In the only other Premier Division fixture to beat the weather, Shepton Mallet picked up their first three points in over a month by beating Wellington 2-1. Following a goalless opening half, Shepton made a dream start to the second half, going ahead 100 seconds after the restart, only for Wellington to level things five minutes later through Luke Boyle. Shepton had a big midweek win in the cup, and they managed to back that up with another victory, when Kieran Bailey headed home Andy Martin’s corner 20 minutes from time.
