IMany of youhave beencustomers foryears and havebecomeaccustomed tothe informativenewsletters we
leave for you with our 6 fertilizervisits. By now I’m sure you’venoticed we have expanded theamount of information we leave foryou. It became increasingly moredifficult to decide what gets left outdue to our limited space. We arevery excited to deliver to you evenbetter communication and detailedinformation pertaining to lawns andthe lawn care industry. For all whoare 1st year customers, a newsletterjust like this one will be left with
WELCOME TO THE START OF GREEN SIDE UP’S2017 SEASON!!!!
your paperwork after every fertilizervisit. Many repeat topics likeinstructions and customerincentives will be in each but wealways will be adding new andfresh content as we go through theseasons. It is our intention to usethis publication as a tool guidingyou to help with the lawn careprocess, increase your knowledgeof lawns, understand perils that cannegatively impact the lawn’ssuccess, allow us to communicateto you and many other reasons. We do not leave newsletters forone time services such asfungicide, insecticide and tick andflea treatments because noteverybody gets those services, andwe want all our customers toreceive the necessary information.
I
The fertilization we performed today wasa granular product. The fertilizer does not need to bewatered to be effective. Normal activitycan resume immediately. The only waittime for activity on the lawn is after it ismoistened give it 2 hours to dry. In plainEnglish you should stay off the grassafter it gets wet because it is releasing itsactive ingredients and will be safe whendry. The morning dew is sufficientmoisture. If your system is on or if it rainsthat’s okay, just not necessary. Sameinstructions if you got a lime applicationtoday as well as the fertilizer.
A fun Green Side Uppolicy with regardsto lime, is we hide apile of lime on yourproperty. The lime is
a high quality product that is brownish incolor. We get so many calls that ourcustomers can’t see the lime we startedplacing a handful on air conditionerpads. We do this so we can instruct ourcustomers to throw the lime in the grassand you’ll better understand it’s notvisible to the naked eye.
We have researched and purchased newweed controls and fungus controlproducts. Every 3-4 years weeds andfungus build immunities to the productsused to eliminate them. We’ve seenmore resistance recently and will bechanging products to achieve betterresults.
We now offer mosquito control as a program consisting of6 treatments staring in April and ending in September. Theapplications will be spaced approximately 4 weeks apart. We can provide this service as a one-time application, forexample if you are having an outside party. You haveprobably seen a lot of companies now providing theseservices and wondered why Green Side Up didn’t offermosquito control. There’s a couple reasons we waited until now to offermosquito control. First the chance of “drift” was very concerning. I haveneighbors of customers that complain if we get too close to their property withour exact lawn spray and presumed with an airborne application I would beencouraging a lot of problems. New equipment has improved the precision ofthe applications and droplet size controls allow us to adjust the sprays if thereis a slight wind. We are very confident our sprays will not be intrusive toneighbors. Secondly it has been our philosophy when new products andservices are on the market there is a learning curve. That is exactly whathappened, the products are significantly more effective and safer now versus3 years ago. Read more about our new mosquito control program on theback page of this newsletter.

Just like a three legged stool, a healthy lawn issupported by three equally important factors, each one works with the other to support alawn.
First leg – – Homeownersmust make sure the lawn is correctly mowed, watered and maintainedSecond leg – – She needs toprovide good growing conditions. Problems
will occur when temperatures, rain and humidity become extreme and fluctuaterapidly.Third leg – – Proper timing, application methodsand consistency are the benefits of a professional lawn fertilization company.Achieving a near perfect lawn takes time. Green Side Up cannot performmiracles. We are only one leg of the stool and it takes all three legs workingtogether to accomplish anything.
We work hard to help you attain a lawn to be proud of. It is important for ourcustomers to have realistic expectations about lawn care. Despite our bestefforts, there are many natural factor that are beyond anyone’s control. Grass isa living plant and is affected by the environment and many other variables wesimply can’t control. Our job is to fight mother nature. If we work together withtimely treatments, proper diagnosis and clear communication you will have ahealthy lawn to be proud of.
Greetings and salutations! I hope that you all have had a
happy and healthy winter. If you’re like me, you looking
forward to another season of outdoor living. One of the
questions that we get a lot is what do we do in the off
season. Well, in addition to putting on some winter
weight (me anyway), we do a lot of research.
I know that many of you have already had experience with Kyllinga in your lawn. Kyllinga is an
invasive, weedy sedge that is believed to have originated in Asia. It has been present in
California and other warm weather states out West for decades, and has been spreading
eastward for about 10-15 years. It grows best in areas that are wet and that receive sun, but
can grow in shaded areas as well. It’s presence in a yard can be an indication of over watering
or poor drainage. As you know, I’ve always maintained that your lawn’s best friend and
advocate is you. If you notice areas in your lawn that seem unusually wet, an adjustment in
your watering schedule may be needed.
Pulling the weed out is not a good option for two reasons. First, pulling the weed that is above
ground only serves to release seeds into the atmosphere, allowing them to spread. This is an
example of transference, which is how weeds spread. Other examples include mower blades,
and birds or other critters that eat the seeds in one area and redeposit them in another.
Additionally, the root system of Kyllinga is called a rhizome, which translated from Greek
means “mass of roots”. Even if you pull out a portion of the roots, much of the system will
remain intact beneath the soil.
Our research indicates that the most economical way to try to control this scourge is through a
combination of healthy turf and well-timed herbicide applications. We have developed a
treatment program, and we would be happy to provide you with more details and pricing
information. Just call our office.
We also offer a program to treat your ornamental trees and shrubs. It is a 5 step program that
includes an early spring and late fall feeding, as well as 3 insecticide/fungicide sprays that are
designed to help your plants withstand the perils that the summer months can bring. Again, we
are happy to offer details and pricing if you are interested.
Today’s treatment is designed do two things. Fertilize your lawn, and create a barrier against
crabgrass. Any time fertilizer is applied to a lawn, growth occurs. Besides seeing your lawn
green up, you may see some cool-weather weeds, like chickweed, develop. They will die off
with warming temperatures and regular mowing. Additionally, you may see the appearance of
what appears to be white weeds in your lawn. Those are actually seeding grass heads. Ditch the
bag if you mow yourself, your lawn is re-seeding itself, for free! Also keep in mind that the
barrier that we’ve begun to establish today can be broken, so no heavy raking once we’ve put it
down!
It’s great to be writing to you again! Three months in front of a computer can make Lou a dull
boy! I look forward to seeing all of you again. If I can be of service to
any of you personally, please do not hesitate to call me at the office.
Here’s to a healthy, and green, season!Miers (Peace in Latvian)
Our servicetechnicians arenow required toknock before anyservice call orestimate. We donot require them toknock for routine
fertilizer applications or one time services, that would be too intrusive. Service calls arenot the normal fertilizer applications. Theyare requested visits by our customers todiagnose a problem or redo a service. Thispolicy has been put in place becauseservice calls and estimates require someconversation and we want to make sure youare comfortable with our course of action.
Knock, Knock
One of the great aspectsof the increased contentin our newsletters is theability to add topicalinformation last minute. Isave an area for relevanttopics that are happeningnow. It is Sunday 2/26and on my walk around
the lake I passed a customer’s yard that was riddledwith “chickweed” and another that had a lot of “onion grass”. The warmFebruary has this stuff popping early. Previous years we don’t see this untillate into March and normal mowing stresses and kills both of theseunwanted growth populations without the need for pesticides. We try to beas environmentally friendly as possible. This year we are going to add astep to our 1st round of services at no additional charge. We will bringbackpack sprayers to eliminate this issue so you don’t have to look at theeyesore until mowing begins. There are no ways to prevent either of thesenuisances from emerging, they are in the soil and pop when the conditionsare favorable. There is also a strong possibility with fluctuating temperaturessome that popped because it was warm may die with a cold night. Alsothere may be more to sprout. In this case we will devise a game plan tomeet your specific needs. Remember a blanket application of weed controlscan only be done once in the spring and that is best served with treatment#2 when the really stubborn weeds are present. It is our position as yourlawn care professional that the extra step of backpack spraying this surpriseattack of early emerging chickweed and onion grass is the best solution forthe short term and long term success of your lawn. With a crazy start likethis I can’t wait to see what the hot months bring!!!
CHICKWEED AND ONION GRASS POPPING EARLY
As we discussed earlier we will beproviding mosquito control servicesthis year and it will become apermanent service that Green SideUp will be offering. The science hasevolved over the past few years towhere it works great, it’s safe tospray and there is a genuine need. Itmakes perfect sense for a lawn carecompany to add these services. For
those of you who have experience with our tick and flea program you mostlikely already know that a recurring treatment doesn’t mean the pest is totallyeliminated. Our mosquito program like our tick and flea program will take thepopulation of X and greatly reduce it to almost non-existent. Our knowledge ofyour property will allow us to give pricing without the need for a specialappointment. We try to be unintrusive and respect your valuable time. We cangive specific pricing and answer any questions over the phone. Our schedulefor the 6 step program will be late April thru September. Each treatment will beabout 4 weeks apart. We can do one time sprays upon request. We are veryexcited about this additional service and look forward to discussing the detailswith you. Please check out a mosquito control incentive in the “CustomerIncentive” section.
