• Famous Women Unit – We will learn the importance of women and their contributions.

• Pioneer Unit – • Oregon Trail • Lewis & Clark • “Westward Ho!”• immigration vs. emigration • Apple Valley

• Ancient Egypt – culture, religion, traditions, customs, and, most importantly, the contributions they made that we use today.

• Map Skills- Longitude, latitude, analyze a map scale,

look at various types of maps and gain understanding of their purpose

• Writing – • Persuasive writing • summarizing • paragraph writing • multi-paragraph in a research paper• letter writing- friendly and business letters • Published book activity- descriptive writing (describing their face using

similes and metaphors)

• Dictionary Skills• Review of Cursive – Once all letters are reviewed, they are

required to write in cursive.

• Grammar Skills – – grammar lessons – application in every day writing

• Alternating weeks• Every student will have spelling and vocabulary instruction.• Spelling:

– A spelling rule will be introduced, students will generate their own spelling list as a class, classroom and homework assignments, assessment at the end of the week.

• Vocabulary:– Building Vocabulary Program– Teach vocabulary words through root words and learning their

meanings.– Learning goal: have the ability to apply the meanings of the roots

to learn new words.– Daily instruction and homework– Assessment at the end of the week

• 3 Homogeneous groupings• Groupings are fluid• McGraw Hill Series

• Walters Art Gallery –• April 9th- they come to the school• April 10th – we go to the museum

• Oregon Ridge Park – – Simulate the Oregon Trail– Wear pioneer clothing– Build a wagon in class with Apple Valley family– Travel the Oregon Trail with a guide– Stations- pitch a shelter with a tarp, build a fire using flint,

boil water for tea, sing and dance pioneer songs– All parents are welcome– We will need volunteers to transport our wagons in vans.– Date is TBD. We will be in touch with specific details as we

get closer to the date.

• Biome Day – All day interactive science experiments exploring different biomes. – There will be student preparation in science and general studies. – This is integrated with the Judaics teachers as there is an Israel room. – Parent volunteers are needed. – We will be in touch well in advance with more details.– Date is TBD

• Play – March 25th at 2:15– Immigration

• Judy Chicago Dinner Party – Date TBD because it is dependent on when their art projects are finalized.

– An evening event where dinner is served– Then, we gather as a group to hear the students present information on a famous woman that they

researched.

• Owl Day – Parents are welcome to come. The students will read the book, Owl in the Shower by Jean Craighead George, as a reading assignment to be done at home with parents.

• 15 minutes for spelling• 15 minutes for math• If your child is unable to complete homework for any

reason, please send me a note or an email, as stated in the parent handbook.

• If your child brings in his/her homework every day during the week, they will get to choose a prize from the homework box.
