Catholic Spiritual Tradition has its real model in the Old Testament. The People of God had a Covenantal relationship with God. That established their identity as God’s people belonging to Him. This sense of belonging to Him was the core of their identity. Alienation from that truth or assuming loyalty to pagan gods and cultures due to their secular influence or human interaction with other cultures and people, or even the affluence of material wellbeing, jeopardized their sense of identity and distorted their spiritual wellbeing internally and externally resulting in their loss of faith and faithfulness to the covenant with God. There is a latent dynamics in us that we are unaware of or just ignore it for convenience and complacency. We progressively ignore our devotions to the Lord and our religious zeal and we let ourselves be occupied with secular world, mostly TV shows or social media. This new tendency is addictive. Though we know that we do not gain anything better either intellectually or socially, we feel ourselves attached to this new world. All secular shows have an agenda and very subtly they inject that through the programs. Eventually we become so used to this agenda that we not only defend it but become advocates of it. There is no surprise that many of our friends defend these secular values against the doctrines of faith which they profess and the teachings of the church which are in conflict with such secular liberalism. We should always remember our source of life from God and our obligation to obey His commandments and our responsibility to nurture good relationship with Him through Jesus. As His adopted children we have entered into a covenantal relationship with God. We are only stewards of His blessings in our lives. Stewards are held accountable to the Master. In our case we call this our final judgement when we long for Eternal Reward for our faithfulness and diligence in doing His Will always in our lives. We must consciously avoid any potential alienation due to our involvement with the world. This is possible through our daily efforts to love our true God whom Jesus reveled to us. Just as Jesus maintained His communion with the Father all through His life in this world so do we maintain our communion with Jesus every day and thereby enter into the Communion with the heavenly Father. We have to teach our children of this important aspect of our faith life which should not be ignored by any worldly or material pressures of our life.

God bless you all.

From the Pastor’s Desk / Del Escritorio del Padre

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the past century, a desire to recover a deep sense of unity among all believers in Christ has grown. The “ecumenical movement” (from the Greek word meaning the “the whole inhabited world”) began among Protestant Christians, but was given great energy in 1920 with a letter from the Orthodox Patriarch of Constantinople, calling for closer dialogue and cooperation among Christians. In 1960, Pope John XXIII invited Protestant and Orthodox observers to the Second Vatican Council. In 1964, the Council’s Decree on Ecumenism named these Christians “separated brethren,” a huge leap forward from the time of labeling them as “outside the Church.” A year later, a new pope, Paul VI, and the Orthodox Patriarch officially nullified the condemnations that walled off East from West for nine hundred years.

The pace and optimism of the 1960s has sadly waned, and the signs of progress toward unity are few; yet there are wider agreements on sharing Communion among various Christian denominations, and among Protestants agreements regarding sharing of ecclesiastical life and ministry. Among the success stories of the ecumenical movement are greater cooperation among Christian clergy, a similar Lectionary for Protestants and Catholics, and even experiments in the monastic life and common worship. —James Field, Copyright © J. HOW GOD INTENDS US TO LIVE

Today’s readings are again directed to believers, communities of faith. As in last week’s reading, Amos confronts us with a condemnation of those whose lives are focused on pleasure and self-absorption. The psalm contrasts that focus with the Lord’s—justice for the oppressed; food the hungry; freedom for captives; sight to the blind; raising of those who are bowed down; loving the just; protecting strangers, orphans, and the widow; and by doing so, thwarting the way of the wicked. Timothy urges the pursuit of righteousness, devotion, faith, love, patience, and gentleness. Luke tells the familiar tale of the wealthy man and the poor beggar at his doorstep, who experience life very differently in this world and in the next. We are once again being given clear indications about how God intends for us to live our lives. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
