    Grand Knight’s Message Mike Kloss

Brother Knights, Ladies Auxiliary, and Catholic Daughters, Just a few words of thanks and a few more for assistance. The Summer Fling and the Family Day events were wonderful successes. I thank each of you that supported and participated in these fun activities. Now, I need your assistance and participation to insure that your "Council Casino Night" for Catholic education continues to have success. Casino Night is VERY NEAR. October 10, 2015 is the date of this fun and festive event. This will be the sixth year and with your assistance, promotion and participation it will be as enjoyable and successful, if not more so, than the previous five. I urge you to read and respond to the information in this news-letter by contacting Doug Wendt or John Buck and providing assistance. Let us make their phones ring like never before. I ask that you read the article from Brother John Buck regarding the Religious Sisters' Appreciation Event. This is a first for our council and the recognition and appreciation of the Sisters are long overdue. The Memorial Mass for our deceased Brothers of the past year will take place at our facilities on Monday, November 23, 2015 beginning at 7 p.m. This is an open event to members and their families. More information will be provided in the near future. The members’ meetings are going well...... for those that have not attended in a while.....come on by and give it a try. No telling who you may see there. Besides your ideas and participation are appreciated and requested. Please read your newsletter and make plans to participate in your council activities. God IS Great, Life IS Good, SO are you!

God Bless you and your families.

    Chaplain’s Message Rev. Rafael Becerra

Beginning of Wisdom The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. Proverbs 9:10

The fear of the Lord is fundamental to finding wisdom. Without awe of the Almighty, there is no access to His insight. Where reverence for His holiness is void, there is lack of understanding in the ways of God. The first step in acquiring wisdom from almighty God is to fear Him. There is a worship of the Lord’s majesty and a dread of His judgment. His Holy Word—the Bible—is taken to heart as truth for the purpose of life transformation. At first, fear of the Lord may be so overwhelming that it casts out love and distracts our desire for intimacy. Anyone who has been broken under-stands this process. However, once a healthy fear of the Lord has been embraced, the result is peace and knowledge in submission to and love for the Holy One.

“He will be the sure foundation for your times, a rich store of salvation and wisdom and knowledge; the fear of the Lord is the key to this treasure” (Isaiah 33:6). Moreover, we mock God when we move away from the language of fear; He is not one to be mocked. So as devoted followers of Christ, we sow the seeds of respect, reverence, and fear of the Lord. This discipline of faith results in a harvest of holiness, happiness, and wisdom. Fear of Him leads to knowledge of Him. Therefore, bowing before Him on your knees in prayer, seek His face for forgiveness and relational restoration.

Celebrate together with Christ our conquest over sin, sorrow, and death. What is counterintuitive on earth is intuitive in heaven. Listen to David admonish his son Solomon, who became the wisest man in the world: “As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the Lord searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever” (1 Chronicles 28:9 nasb).

    By Hunters Wisdom

Prayer: Heavenly Father, my heart’s desire is to walk in wisdom and the fear of the Lord. Application: What area of my life lacks fear of the Lord, and how can I expose it to accountability? Related Readings: Job 28:28; Psalm 111:10; Matthew 11:27; 1 John 5:20

  • FAMILY DIRECTOR John Buck A special note and thank you to the manager at Fiesta Mart at Fulton & Cavalade Street—Ramon Ochoa. For several years now, Ramon, not a KC member, has given me a discount for food purchases from his store for Summer Fling and other Council 2917 parties. He has also given me store gift cards for Casino Night. Ramon has never asked for any thanks, but we do need to thank him. Of the stores that I regularly shop at, Ramon has been the most generous with discounts for our council. If you are in the area, please stop by and tell Ramon thank you for his generosity. SUMMER FLING: I do not know the exact amount that we made from our Council's Annual Fundraiser, so I will let the Council FS or Treasurer make the financial report, but I will report on the other activities. Thank you to the fantastic cooking crew—Tony and Marion Lewandowski, Jimmy Dziedzic, Don Christen, Tom Civitello, Richard Pavlas, Pete Rodriguez, Billy Hoffart, Rick Nowak, James Urbanovsky, Carlo DeChiro, Bob Rivera, Eddie Okonski, III, Greg Okonski, and John Buck. There were probably more that I missed, so if you helped and I did not mention your name, please excuse me. Servers—most of the cookers doubled as servers, plus Sergio Espinosa, Jose Limas and Ed Tobola. Purchasers of the supplies (the reason for listing these men is because they took a day off from work for this job)— Jimmy Dziedzic, Bennie Bronikowski, Ronnie Buck, and John Buck. And a big thank you to Richard Pavlas and Greg Okonski for washing the dishes Saturday night. Door/ticket workers—Don & JoAnn Psencik, Floyd & Sandra Rekieta, and Shawn Reichardt. Ladies Auxiliary for their desserts and the CDA for tea. A large thank you needs to go to the group that worked the Mini-Raffle—Bennie Bronikowski for his requests of dona-tions for the raffle items and Larry Tobias for decorating the raffle baskets; Larry & his son, Troy, for working the raffle. All raffle ticket sellers—Gladys Tobias, Ed and Janie Okonski, Greg Okonski, James Urbanovsky, Theresa Burkett.

    1st prize $5,000 Karen Perkovich

    2nd prize $1,000 Jack McMullen

    3rd prize $1,000 Donna Wilganowski

    12th prize $ 300 Darlene Okonski

After the party was over, 2 days of work and celebrating, the BBQ room and hall needed to be cleaned, so I need a special thank you to those workers—Jimmy Dziedzic, Rick Nowak, Lydia Clifton, and John Buck. Total man hours for cleaning the hall after the party, on Sunday—20 volunteer hours. If I missed anyone, please excuse me, I was moving too much and too fast on Summer Fling to watch and see everyone. FAMILY DAY: a delicious meal was served, door prizes given out, Knight and Family of the Month certificates were handed out along with the announcement of Knight and Family of the Year. John Buck was awarded Knight of the Year and Mike and Mary Goins were awarded Family of the Year. These are the 2 highest honors that a council can award its membership—THESE ARE HONORS. This honor is recognized by the member's work with the council, church, and civic duties. Thank you to the following members for preparing the delicious meal—Billy Hoffart, Paul Heidbreder, Sergio Espinosa,& John Buck and those that served the meal—Billy Hoffart, Ed Tobola, Michael Kubiak, Mike Kloss, & Richard Pavlas. After preparing the meal, Paul and Sergio had to leave and did not get to enjoy the meal they prepared. Thank you to the bartenders—Mike Goins and Mark Demny. And as always, our Ladies Auxiliary for providing us with dessert and tea. CELEBRATING SISTERS—October 25: Recognizing religious sisters for their work and dedication to the church. • Almost Home! Archdiocesan Knights of Columbus pledges September 1, 2015 totaled $420,343.00, just $79,657.00 short of our $500,000.00 goal. Council 2917’s pledges totaled $44,575.00, just $5,425.00 short of our $50,000.00 council goal. The dedication of the facility was held on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 with His Eminence Daniel Cardinal DiNardo officiating and in his comments expressed his appreciation and asked that it be passed on to the donors who made the Priest Retirement Home a reality for the comfort of our retired priest. Currently 5 retired priests along with Retired Auxiliary Bishop Vincent M. Rizzotto are residents in their new home. There are a total of 24 comfortable living quarter units into which the priests will be moving with Unit 13 reserved for Archbishop Emeritus Joseph A Fiorenza. We are within reach of both the Archdiocesan Chapter and Council 2917 goals and would like the completion of the pledges as soon as possible. Again, our appeal is directed to those who would like to join the 55 generous council family members who have already pledged this remarkable amount. Pledge cards can be secured by either sending a request via email or by telephone listed below. May the Good Lord reward you a hundred-fold for sharing your hard earned resources used in the construction of a comfortable home for our priests in their retirement years. • LADIES' AUXILIARY Kelly Clawson, President Dear Ladies,

I am so looking forward to Fall weather actually getting here. I'm so tired of it being hot! I want to thank all of you that brought cakes and pies to the Summer Fling. The variety made choosing just one difficult! I would also like to thank the workers who helped cut, slice, wrap, and sell. Wanda Kainer, Dolores Tobola, Earline Okruhlik, Janie Okonski, Christine Swiech, Dorothy Urbanovsky, Terry Reyes, Angie Heinrich, Theresa Burkett and myself. We made $292.50 from our desserts. Thank you to Sandra Rekieta, Dorothy Urbanovsky, Earline Orkuhlik, Theresa Burkett, Henrietta Nevlud and Kathy Bronikowski for their donations to the Silent Cake Auction. We made $240.00 on that auction. This brings a profit of $532.50. Thanks again ladies! At our September meeting, we welcomed a new member, Gloria Gutierrez. Please encourage the ladies of our knights to join us. On October 25, we will be hosting "Celebrating Sisters" along with the Knights and CDA. The event will begin at 3:00pm with dinner served at 5:00pm. If you would like to join us, tickets are $10. This includes dinner and 1 bar drink - see me or John Buck. If you have any pictures of sisters from your youth or current that you would like to share, please contact me. If you would like to donate a $10 gift card for a prize, all donations are appreciated. The KC and Ladies Christmas Party will be on Sunday, December 13th. Doris Henderson has graciously volunteered to chair the mini-raffle for us again this year. If you have anything you would like to donate toward the baskets, please get with Doris as soon as possible. She can be reached at 713-466-0606. In lieu of the November meeting, we are hoping everyone will attend the Mass for deceased members on Monday, November 23rd, at 7:00pm. There will be no meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary until January. At the January meeting, we will be starting a new attendance prize. The starting amount will be $20. The names of all members will be in the drawing pool. If the name drawn is not in atten-dance, the amount will increase $20 for the next meeting. The amount will increase $20 for each meeting until the name drawn is a member in attendance. We are hoping this new attendance prize will increase member attendance at our meetings. Our next meeting will be on January 20 at 7:00 pm. A huge thank you to the Bingo kitchen workers and bakers. It is hard to sometimes find the words to thank these amazing ladies. Workers for the month of August were: Earline Okruhlik, Dorothy Urbanovsky, Judy Wendt, Delores Tobola, Theresa Burkett, Angie Heinrich, Wanda Kainer, Sandra Rekieta, Kathy Bronikowski Bakers were: Earline Okruhlik, Dorothy Urbanovsky, Judy Wendt, Wanda Kainer, Angie Heinrich, Sandra Rekieta, Kathy Bronikowski, I hope everyone has a very Blessed Fall!
