My name is Wenkang Kan. I was a 23-year-old graphic designer. I come from China. I’ll graduate from

Nanjing Arts Institute in Arts Design in June 2010. Even so, I have two-year working experience. In the years between

2007 and 2009, I worked as an art editor for design magazine New Graphic and Pro. In the meantime, I have joined the

publishing of the design magazine----New Graphic, New Product (Jiangsu Arts Publishing House in China) Pro,

Crossover (Liaoning Science and Technology Publishing House).The following are my works from the beginning of my

design learning till now.

These works mainly go into the following categories: Basic Research Design, namely, making the relative works based

on the exploration of the fundamental elements of design ---- deconstruction, composition, Perspective composition and

so on; Poster Design; Book Design; Logo Design; UI Design; Illustration and some business design. Because I prefer to

try different design styles and approaches, my works are very diverse (most of which have tried a combination

of Chinese classical elements and western design.) In my design, I have been pursuing the relationship between design

and the designer’s personal feelings. I always hope my works will reflect my personal feelings, or that my works can

have a powerful appeal! I have always firmly believed that a successful design comes from life and life is a source of

inspiration.

It is an assignment of a design fundamental course on the relationship between music and design. When doing the assignment, I listened to the classic music, while

painting on a white paperboard. The painting was a kind of representation of what I felt when appreciating the music. There were no restrictions on the material I could use,

or on the content I could paint. I painted on a desk with gouache color, and pressed black paperboard on the desk. This is how the above painting is produced. The pressure

on the paperboard generates an irregular shape and makes the colors integrated, through which I want to show a kind of serene and passionate feeling, as I was listening to

the Chinese classic music “Moonlight on the Pond”. The painting displays the internal association or coincidence between music and design.

This painting was drawn when I was listening to a gothic music which sounded quite repressive. It has an effect of splashing effect of colors.

The main body of the piece of work is a piano score copied from somewhere. I color it according to my understanding of the relationship between color and music, or the

relationship between color and emotions. It is a kind of reproduction of musical melody in the capacity as a designer.

This is also an assignment of a fundamental course on shape of the Chinese traditional element “Taihu stone”. The students are expected to form a taihu stone with life

elements. I use stools, cloth, and iron wires construct taihu stones with the relationship among point, line and panel in mind. It is my understanding of the characteristics of

the traditional taihu stone.

This basic practice was done when I just entered into my university, of which purpose was to know the conception of ‘composition’. I painted 30 common stools by using

acrylic paints and then combined it,which cost my one month to finish it. One part of the color of the stools was drawn from paintings, the other part from tricolor. I tried to

rely on color similarity and color divergence to form an interesting combination which was embodied by stool that is a standard unit-vector. It not only forms an aesthetic

feeling by crisscrossing in structure, but also forms composition in color.

The poster is made for the Poster Festival of College Students. The picture is composed of two parts: the startup screen of vista and that of windows. The startup of the computer means the beginning of a new day. Coffee beans in the picture are the source of power of the computers, which indicates that Nestle Coffee is the source of energy.

China has a long history in the art of ink. The ink painting has a special visual perception and always displays a unique flavor of elegance and awesomeness, liveliness and preciseness. The comparison among the three colors of black, white, and gray is a reflection of profound Chinese culture. I choose seals, ink stones, wash (not sure), and volumes which have close relationships with the ink art as the main roles of the poster, with Chinese characters lining either horizontally or vertically in the picture. The Chinese styled painting, together with the graphic elements in gradually-changing seven colors, shows the perfect integration of modern world and Chinese tradition.

This is both a CD player and a clock. The disk rotates, and time ticks by. The songs in the disks sound sorrowful, happy, tedious… just like how we feel in our daily life. There are lots of things in common between a CD player and a clock.

I got the idea of forming the 26 letters with different ways of hand overlaying after watching a magic performed by the Chinese famous magician, Liu Qian. The shapes of the 26 letters are actually graphics.

1.Unify the style of eight pieces of works with certain elements. I choose conch as the element to make the eight works unified in style through diffusion, centralization, symmetrization. 2. There are four pattern layouts in different styles which contain a common element, giraffe. 3. This is a combination practice by using English letters and numbers. I paid attention to the size and weight of the letters and then arranged it on the grid paper in order.

I got the idea of the design during my traveling in Hainan. The six elements are my impression upon the summer travel, and meanwhile they represent six interface

functions of computers. The camera stands for my documents, as camera is used to record things, which is much similar to the function of my documents. The luggage bag

represents my computer. The note book is file folder in the computer. The slippers are a representation of tool case, as slippers are articles for daily use. Surfing board is

the representation of surfing online. A pair of ducks stands for network neighborhood. All these elements are combined together, showing the happy feelings on the summer

beach.

The idea originates from a film I have watched, “Star Wars”. The four interfaces are designed based on the theme of space alien technology, representing respectively the

four functions of music, setting, TV, and calendar. Thus they are unified in the style of alien spacecraft.

This is a collection of the logos I have designed from 2006 to 2009, including both logos of commercial institutions and logos of non-profit making institutions.

This is my another hobby, illustration. I drew a merman robot number 1, and then there were number 2 and number 3. That was the most successful one, which cost my

almost two weeks to finish it.

I make use of the differences among various materials to design the book. The transparent polymethyl methacrylate plates and single sheets of color paper are used as the

main body of the book. The content of the book are craved in the plate, which can be seen only if one put the plate on the color paper. This makes reading great fun and

changes the people’s reading habits.

The book was designed in April, 2009. I pay special attention to the design of the book cover, while the content is not important in this case. I use the bamboo knitting as

the cover, and special paper similar to Chinese calligraphy paper together with parchment paper as the inside pages. This is my own research design about the effects of

different materials applied in the design of book shapes. In this case, I want to display a kind of elegance in the outlook of the book.

This book records some important moments of my life, such as my birth, admission into college… I choose video tape as the media to indicate that my life is just like the

tape, playing and recorded. This book is made based on the theory of deconstruction. With a nostalgic style, the book acts as a reminder of the past important matters.

“My Video Tape” – Book Design

The flower-bird painting of Song Dynasty is always one of my favorite types of paintings. Each time I appreciate them, I am moved by the passions for life the painting

expresses, and overwhelmed by the ingenious painting skills and its artistic charm. I borrow many elements of the Song dynasty paintings, and apply them in my own

painting through tiling and deconstructing. The picture I drawn has a fresh and sweet taste, yet it is still song-dynasty-styled.

I use many sheets of parchment paper to be part of the whole book cover, with some information in each sheet. Put all the sheets together, and we can get the complete

content in the cover. It embodies a kind of implicitness. The inside pages are dedicated to three sections: calmness, repression, and explosion, which represents my

understanding of the expression “more energy, more responsibilities”.

I have been working in the SHAKE studio by my professor’s introduction since 2007, which mainly dominates book publishing. The three design magazines New Graphic , New Space, and New Product with the largest circulation in China are all published by this studio. There is no doubt that the studio provides me with a wonderful pratical platform so that my design results could be fully demonstrated. Since 2007 to now, I have taken part in the editing the edition 9 to 23 of New Graphic and the edition 1 to 5 of New Product. In addition, this year I join the edition of PRO which is a bi-monthly design magazine facing European and Asian markets. During this time, New Graphic--Documents of Iran, LifeIis Different Due to Them—The Creation Essence of World Famous Designers, New Graphic-- Picture Books of New Characters edited all by myself in 2009 will be published recently. http://www.seecoo.com.cn

Commercial Design

PRO is a professional publication edited by the SHAKE studio. PRO focuses on the creative visual culture of new concepts, new patterns and new

perception, transforming the trends and wisdom of visual design and creation to wider readers. The magazine edited by me and two other designers is

very modern. Moreover, its aim is to introduce the most popular design and design elements so as to gathering different kinds of designs.

New Graphic is an academic journal planed and edited by PRO cultural organization. Since 2004, New Graphic has gradually been a

publication with a certain representation and an influence in China. I have begun editing the design since 2007, and it is also my first

magazine. Totally, I have participated in 14 editions of the magazine and I am still doing the job. New Graphic introduces mainly on

the most famous plane designs at home and abroad or focuses on the designers. The style of the magazine is extremely rigorous and

academic. Within the short three years, New Graphic has been the most authoritative publication in design area in China.
