“Wesbrook Village is unbelievable. You feel like you’re in a resort. Even just now, walking the dog, there’s a brand new pond area with bridges, walkways and parks all around. They’ve done a really great job with the development here, spacing out

the timing of the buildings, blending a village into the university environment…This was definitely our number one choice.”

Graham Thomas, Head Coach,

UBC Thunderbirds Women’s Hockey and Wesbrook Resident

Welcome, and thanks for reading. The magazine you

hold in your hands is our very first issue. It felt like

the right time to put our story in print. Because today,

we have a lot of stories to tell at Wesbrook Village,

and the magazine offers a format that’s vivid, and

tactile, and a little more personal for you, the reader.

Through this medium, we hope to capture the spirit

of the neighbourhood, and get our story in front of a

lot more people.

The original vision for Wesbrook Village was ambitious:

take the most advanced principles of West Coast

community design, and bring them to life in a thriving,

sustainable, prosperous neighbourhood, on UBC’s

Vancouver campus. Today, every element of a full

community has arrived here. Excellent schools, essential

and lifestyle retail, dining and grocers, sports and cycling

outlets, community resources, gardens. It’s all here, and

it’s all woven together remarkably well. Recognizing this

success, more and more developers, retailers, and residents

are choosing Wesbrook every month, and the feeling in

this neighbourhood is amazing.

This magazine is meant to celebrate all that. In these

pages, we intend to pack everything from local profiles

to news to ongoing community updates. It’s a real

neighbourhood story, unfolding in time. We want this

magazine to serve you, and our neighbourhood, so

please let us know how we can make these pages work

even harder for you.

Welcome to Wesbrook Life.

We’re glad you’re here with us.

AT ANY EVENTO N G O I N G N E I G H B O U R H O O D E V E N T S

A T W E S B R O O K V I L L A G E

In any neighbourhood, whether brand new or generations

old, shared experiences foster community. Ongoing

neighbourhood events bring people together, giving them

reasons to mingle and get to know one another. These

bonds are what make a neighbourhood feel like home.

Wesbrook hosts a number of different events throughout

the year. Collectively, the events calendar is designed to

offer something that just about everyone can connect

with – and most importantly, they’re open to absolutely

everyone, whether you live in the neighbourhood or not.

The Wesbrook Village Festival, in September, is the

big one: this block party for 5,000 features performances

for every cultural taste, dancing, games for kids, free

(excellent) food, and giveaways from neighbourhood

retailers. It’s a wonderful finish to the summer and lead-

in to the new school year, and it’s the Wesbrook Village

signature event.

Throughout the rest of the year, regular events offer

plenty of excuses to get out and get to know the people

around us. The Canada Day Run, in July, sees hundreds

dress up in Canada Day red for a raucous run through

the forest. Outdoor movies bring the magic of cinema

(with classics like E.T. this August) to our outdoor spaces.

Easter egg hunts, Halloween trick-or-treating, concerts

and carolers for Christmas: Wesbrook is a very active

neighbourhood, and the events we host year-round are

an important way to foster connections and make our

community as vital and welcoming as possible.

Many of our events are rooted in the Wesbrook Welcome

Centre, at 3378 Wesbrook Mall. Weekly events like

Story Time, Family Movies, our Documentary Film

Club, our Book Club, English Corner, and many others

are anchored in and around this space. Regardless, the

Wesbrook Welcome Centre is always the best place to

get information about the neighbourhood in general.

And keep an eye on DiscoverWesbrook.com, and

social media channels like Facebook and Twitter, to stay

abreast of upcoming events. There’s plenty to watch for.

We look forward to seeing you in the neighbourhood.

W H A T ’ S N E W I N T H E C O M M U N I T Y

Our events are open to everyone and many

are complimentary. See our events page at

Ever wondered what those stone-lined water channels running through

the community are all about? If you’re like many residents and visitors, you

probably assumed they were straightforward water features. In fact, they’re

tributaries of a complex and highly advanced network of rainwater

collection and recirculation systems. (Here in the Pacific Northwest, this

kind of rainwater drainage is a key component of sustainable community

design.) To celebrate this unique and visible sustainable feature, Wesbrook

has posted new experiential signage at Smith Park and on Village Lane near

the Welcome Centre, outlining the system. Trickle-down effect, indeed.

The new Wesbrook Community Centre will be a true

gathering place for the people in this neighbourhood.

The largest of three centres planned for UBC campus, the

new approved plan for the centre includes a gymnasium

and fitness centre, bookable spaces and meeting rooms,

a teen centre and games room, music rooms, and more.

As far as activities go, they’ll range widely, but the centre

is equipped for basketball, volleyball, badminton, dance,

yoga, pilates, art classes, and a lot more. It’s going to be

an ideal place for residents to expand their lives on every

level, and get to know one another. The new design also

includes a strong emphasis on connections between

indoor and outdoor spaces, and a close tie to the adjacent

park (the outdoor public realm also includes a splash pad

for kids). We’ll be glad to see it begin to take shape at the

heart of this community. The Wesbrook Community

Centre is under construction and will be open in 2015.

For more information, to view a video on the community

centre, and to take a closer look at the plans, please visit

We’re very fortunate in this generation: as a whole, especially here in the

Pacific Northwest, our culture holds health and wellness as the highest

priorities. Movement and exercise, dietary wisdom, and swift advances in

science and healthcare continually push our quality of life forward. And at

Wesbrook Village – positioned as it is on the freshest natural environment

in the region – it feels like healthy living is knit right into the bricks and

mortar of this place.

This is deliberate. Throughout the genesis of this community, we have tried

to weave activity, good diet choices, and the best in community healthcare

into the experience of the neighbourhood.

When it comes to activity, it’s hard not to move here – and it all begins

with the trails of Pacific Spirit Park: endless forest pathways, an almost

cathedral-like swathe of trees and trails. One could hardly find a better

place to run, bike, or walk the dog. A couple of retail tenants at Wesbrook

are true experts on the wonders these trails have to offer.

The Running Room is a well-known Vancouver authority on running gear.

They also offer a very robust program of running and walking clinics and

clubs, for everyone from brand new runners to seasoned marathon pros.

More Bikes – our friendly neighbourhood bike experts – are committed to

the joy of cycling. They’ve often got great deals on bike rentals, too (a great

way to sample the neighbourhood).

Hot Box Yoga, opening very soon, brings fun, unpretentious, high-calibre

yoga right into Wesbrook Village – a great way to balance your workout life.

Beyond the neighbourhood, UBC as a whole has recreation options galore.

UBC Tennis offers one of the Lower Mainland’s best indoor facilities,

with instructors and clinics available for every level of player. UBC Rec,

meanwhile, offers everything from salsa dancing to sailing, and they’re

always expanding their programs.

Once you’re finished your workout, Jugo Juice is an ideal recovery option –

and a great complement to an active life.

When it comes to healthcare, we’ve tried to focus on progressive solutions,

tinged with a very old-school emphasis on knowing your patients on a

personal level. Careville Health, for instance, is an integrated health clinic

that bridges the gap between naturopathic and traditional medicine, as

well as providing for pharmaceutical needs. It’s like a true neighbourhood

doctor, only much better.

Checking off dental health, Wesbrook Village Dental Centre’s talented

staff – led by Dr. Taheri and Dr. Fransen – can carry out anything from basic

services like fillings and crowns to more advanced options like cosmetic

dentistry and more.

As far as eyecare goes, Dr. Shen of Wesbrook Eyecare is this

neighbourhood’s resident clear vision specialist, and he offers excellent

insight and care to the many readers and scholars of our neighbourhood.

Health is an attitude, a philosophy – an affirmation of life, really. At

Wesbrook Village, healthy living comes naturally. And that is very much

by design.

With world-class facilities like those on campus – not

to mention resident experts in sports, music, science,

creative writing, and more – it would be a shame not

to put those assets to use for the generations to come.

Which is exactly the thinking behind UBC Recreation’s

Summer Youth Camps.

The camps offer a comprehensive range of sport programs,

including aquatics, baseball, basketball, dance, sailing,

skateboarding – far too many to list here. And they’re

often led by notable Thunderbird athletes and coaches.

For parents and kids looking for more than just sports,

there’s plenty to enrich your camp experience: high-level

programs in music, science, writing, leadership, and others

make these camps great creators of renaissance men and

women. The programs are completely customizable, as well

– you can attend basketball in the morning and Beethoven

in the afternoon.

UBC Camps are designed to create unforgettable summer

experiences, in a special environment, at the heart of a

leading learning institution. UBC Camps kick off on June

17th. Find out more at camps.ubc.ca.

LOCAL PERSPECTIVE

A F E W W O R D S W I T H A W E S B R O O K R E S I D E N T

Tell us a little about you and your family.

We’re from Calgary originally. My wife and I are high

school sweethearts and we were married in 2005. We

moved to UBC about two years ago. Caleb was three

months old when I took the job.

I began my coaching career at 19. This will be my

fourteenth year of coaching. I spent the last four years

before coming to UBC coaching for Syracuse University,

New York.

What made you decide on UBC?

I looked around at many other opportunities but when

I investigated UBC, the opportunity here seemed

like the perfect fit for me and my family, both from a

professional and lifestyle perspective. There is lot of

potential here for the team: you’ve got a world-class

facility in the Doug Mitchell [Thunderbird Sports

Centre], and then the campus and the reputation – it

just sells itself. Education is the prime attractor for

recruiting in women’s hockey, so that was key career

wise. UBC is also a lot closer to home for us, and it’s a

beautiful place to live and raise a family. From both the

hockey standpoint and the university standpoint it felt

like a great place to live, work and coach.

What led you to choose Wesbrook Village?

We looked up this area – Wesbrook Village – and saw

the videos, the community base and the parks. And then

on our first visit, we discovered that Wesbrook Village

is unbelievable. You feel like you’re in a resort. Even just

now, walking the dog, there’s a brand new pond area with

bridges, walkways and parks all around. They’ve done a

really great job with the development here, spacing out

the timing of the buildings, blending a village into the

university environment and designing the perfect blend

of harmonious outdoor surroundings and shops that just

feel like home. So, when you added up all those things –

plus the family we did have here – it was pretty much a

no-brainer. This was definitely our number one choice.

What are your immediate plans for the future?

We’re really happy here, and that’s why we purchased

at Binning Tower. I think that tells you we’re looking at

settling some roots here.

One thing I think is a big sell for faculty and families: I

walk to work everyday. You can walk or bike – we walk

everywhere. And as Caleb gets older, there are parks and

fields, and the rink, the track, Pacific Spirit Park, the

beach... You only need one car; you don’t have to sit in

traffic for an hour or more every day. Miles and miles of

trails, the UBC Farmer’s Market, Kitsilano restaurants

– it’s a prime spot. They’re putting in a Biercraft, yoga

studio, Save-On-Foods, and a new community centre.

We feel this is the perfect place to raise our family – this

area has all the priorities that are most important to us.

The retail offering at Wesbrook Village is designed to

complete this community, and serve the people living

here. When you need something, in many instances, you

can just walk downstairs and get it. And with a growing

variety of retail and services, this place has become a retail

destination for the UBC community at large.

Key retailers have long been in place. Save-On-Foods is

there for groceries, produce, a deli, organic food, and more.

The BC Liquor store is there for the bottle of wine you

forgot to pick up to go with that grilled salmon. Café living

is covered off at Blenz; some of the best noodles in the

world are on offer at Chef Hung Taiwanese Beef Noodle;

and Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt is there for a healthy (and

creative) dessert. Togo Sushi is also just around the corner.

When it comes to lifestyle retail, the shops at Wesbrook

Village are aligned with the healthy ethos of this place.

The Running Room is highly regarded as a world running

authority. And pedal pushers here rely on More Bikes,

whose expertise and pro-calibre passion are here to serve

every last cyclist on two tires.

Four new retailers just signed on at Wesbrook as well,

and they promise to bring even more colour to the

neighbourhood.

Daily Catch serves up 100% Ocean-Wise approved

seafood, in a full-scale seafood purveyor that promises

to be the envy of plenty of Vancouver neighbourhoods.

Hot Box Yoga brings a decidedly unpretentious

approach to yoga to the neighbourhood, with a wide

variety of classes that unfold in what they call a

“Happiness Machine.” (Curious? So are we.)

Doughgirls is a 1940s-themed bakery that offers “down

home done right” comfort foods and baked goods.

Biercraft brings true craft-beer authority to Wesbrook

Village – as well as some of the best mussels and frites

in the universe!

Here in Wesbrook Village, we’ve made a concerted effort to bring true

expertise into the neighbourhood. For health, training – or even just

beauty tips – the retailers and services that Wesbrook has on offer are there

find their answers instructive.

BRENNAN CUF F, OWNER

K A BRO S ALON

How can I prevent frizzy hair?

To avoid unnecessary frizziness, always blow-dry your

hair from top to bottom ( ‘root to tip’). This seals the

hairshaft and promotes healthy, shiny hair. You can also

reduce frizzies by simply not touching your hair as much

– doubly true for those of you with curly hair.

If you’re naturally prone to frizzy hair, consider a

leave-in conditioner. This is generally a light cream

that you would use your fingers to comb into your hair

while you’re styling it. A leave-in adds nourishment to

particularly dry hair, defends against humidity, and

protects your hair from the heat of blow dryers and flat

irons. (A low-heat flat iron on the top layers of your hair

is also a great way to get rid of frizzies.)

There are also treatments available to tame your hair on

a more long-term timeline. Look for a treatment that

helps to restore your hair’s natural keratin (low keratin

causes frizz). With proper care, a treatment can provide

up to six months of frizz-free bliss.

VICKI MANN, STORE MANAGER

THE RUNNING ROOM WESBROOK VILL AGE

How should we approach warming up before a run?

The main purpose of warm-up is to ready the body

for the subsequent activity – to ease the body through

the transition from rest to exercise. The best form of

warm-up is doing your planned exercise activity, only

much more slowly for the first few minutes of the

session. After a workout, a cooldown is also essential. A

cooldown period of 5 to 10 minutes should suffice for

almost every workout. Like warm-up, the bulk of the

activity done during the cooldown should be the same

as the exercise session, only slower or on a smaller scale.

Stretching is also key, of course, and is always best done

when the muscles are still warm.

At our clinics here at Wesbrook we usually walk briskly

for a short distance before heading out into the beautiful

network of trails. We cool down the same way, with a

short walk back to the store before stretching.

What are some of the best ways to reduce allergy symptoms through

natural remedies?

Firstly, avoid allergens like pollen, dust and toxic chemicals as much as

possible. Get your home filters changed and wash your carpet. Nose

irrigation with saline water or using a neti-pot removes many allergens

from your system. (You can also steam your face to unclog your nose.) It can

also help to shower often to remove pollen and dust attached to your body,

especially after spending long hours outside during allergy seasons. One

very simple solution: drink green tea with fresh peppermint leaves; green

tea has strong antioxidants, and it also has anti-inflammatory compounds

that inhibit allergic reactions; peppermint has decongestant, anti-

inflammatory and antibacterial properties. Another powerful, simple thing

you can do: eat local honey, which has local pollen but in low concentration,

effectively inoculating you against the irritating effects of pollen. When

you’re suffering from allergic symptoms, eucalyptus and menthol will help

open your passages and reduce inflammation. Use herbal remedies like

spirulina, eyebright, and goldenseal. They have shown to have decongestant

and anti-inflammatory properties. Also, eat plenty of greens, which help

reduce inflammation. Finally, use extra virgin olive oil: it has a compound

called oleocanthal that also has strong anti-inflamatory properties. Good

luck with allergy season!

Today, a community of more than 9,000 people lives on UBC’s Vancouver

campus, in UNA neighbourhoods. This is now a bona fide mini-city,

and requires coordination. The University Neighbourhoods Association

(UNA) acts as a kind of municipal hub for the services, sustainable

initiatives, and amenities that life on this campus presents. Ultimately,

the UNA is there to help foster a vibrant, sustainable, safe and diverse

community at UBC.

The UNA also acts as the sounding board and voice for the community. The

feedback that UNA collects from residents on campus helps to shape the

future development and allocation of community facilities at UBC.

The association is also a liaison for the residents’ use of UBC facilities. (The

UNA Access Card offers residents preferred access to the wide range of

cultural, athletic, and other amenities on campus.)

UBC’s community was conceived to be a place where residents can live, work,

study and play – right here on campus. And it’s working. UBC’s neighbourhoods

now offer an incredibly rich community fabric. This vision owes much to the

organizing force that the UNA provides to these communities.

CAMPUS & COMMUNITY

PLANNINGI N S P I R A T I O N I N B U I L T F O R M S

UBC’s community vision is inspiring: create an advanced, vibrant, sustainable

live-work-learn model on UBC’s campuses. When it comes to the built forms

and planning that go into making this vision a reality, Campus & Community

Planning are the leading authorities that guide the process.

Campus & Community Planning (C&CP) are the urban planners, designers,

public consultation professionals, building inspectors and sustainability

experts who manage UBC’s ongoing growth. These professionals ensure

that choices around buildings, infrastructure, transportation, land use, and

landscape design are consistent with UBC’s long-term goals.

When visitors come to UBC’s neighbourhoods, their reaction to the physical

design of our communities is often one of deep admiration. Community

planning is not always easy, but when it’s done well, it’s a beautiful thing.

We at UBC have C&CP, in large part, to thank for this.

The remarkable public realm that you see throughout UBC are the

work, in large part, of Campus & Community Planning.

We’re all looking at ways to limit our impact on the planet,

and everyone knows that reducing fossil fuels is a high

priority. Wesbrook Village was built with the highest

standards of sustainability in mind, and so is designed

to foster connections to alternative transportation like

walking, cycling, and public transit (all three are practiced

very widely here). Still, in Vancouver, one needs a car from

time to time, whether it’s for trips to the airport, or to pick

up that new credenza from the antique store. That’s where

car sharing comes in.

Today, there are a number of very seamless options for

car sharing available, and Wesbrook Village hosts three

of the best: ZipCar, Car2Go, and Modo. Each has its

advantages. Modo and Zipcar offer more choice when it

comes to vehicle type, while Car2Go offers Smart cars

that can be used for one-way trips. Modo Cars are located

on Wesbrook Mall (in front of Larkspur House), and both

Zipcar and Car2Go vehicles are available in the Wesbrook

Village parking lot. When it comes to getting around,

it’s good to have options. For more information visit

car2go.com, zipcar.ca, or modo.coop.

This magazine, like this community, is here for you – the residents and visitors who enjoy this neighbourhood in real time, year after year. We want it to reflect life here, and meet your needs. With that in mind, we welcome any feedback you

might have on the stories you see here, and any questions or suggestions you might have for how we can make Wesbrook Life even better in the issues to come.

Here’s to turning the page, and a whole new chapter of living here. It’s a very good life, indeed.
