    FACESOF WESBROOK

  • Im constantly impressed by how passionate people are about this place. This is one of the top universities in the world in one of the most beautiful settings in the world and I think our community of students, faculty, staff, alumni and residents

are really proud of that it shows.

    UBC President Arvind Gupta

  • When people see Wesbrook Village for the first time,

they usually focus on the physical elements of this place

the architecture, the parks, our stunning natural location.

Theres certainly something about the design of Wesbrook

that takes your breath away, and smart urban planning has

been critical to the success of this neighbourhood. That

was the frame, the outline, to which we added a healthy

mix of housing options, varied retail, beautiful parks,

    community resources, essential services ultimately

building a complete, sustainable community, right at

    the heart of UBC.

Now, this place is all about the people, the life unfolding

here in real time. And so in this edition of Wesbrook

Life, we get farther into the human stories of this

neighbourhood from those who take part in life here.

The new discoveries being made here every day. What

you can find and do and eat and see here, day after

day. We hope it inspires you to find new ways to enjoy

    Wesbrook Village.

And by the way, this is a two-way conversation. Let us

know how were doing, and how we can make this story

even more meaningful for you. Thank you for taking part

in this neighbourhood. Were very glad youre here.

    UBCS NEWEST PRESIDENT

    A W A R M W E L C O M E T O P R O F E S S O R A R V I N D G U P T A

Whats your role at UBC and how long have you

    been in this role?

I am honoured to be the 13th President and Vice-Chancellor

of the University of British Columbia. I have been in this

    role since July 2014.

When did you move to UBC and what do you love

    about living here?

My wife Michelle and I moved to campus last summer and

we absolutely love being so close to everything thats going

on at UBC. Its the people I enjoy the most at UBC they

are passionate about what they do and about building UBC.

Of course, being a five-minute walk to work is a bonus!

What do you and your family enjoy doing at UBC

    and at Wesbrook Village?

Weve been really enjoying attending UBC Thunderbirds

games, and we love bringing our out of town guests to

see concerts at the Chan Centre. Its wonderful to be able

to walk everywhere and we are very impressed with the

development in the South Campus, all of the restaurants,

the shopping and the convenience of being able to get

your groceries. These are all amenities that make it

attractive for me and my family.

For new residents and visitors, what do you

    recommend they experience at UBC?

There is something for every interest at UBC. There

are world-class cultural venues like the Museum of

Anthropology and the Chan Centre. If youre a sports fan,

our UBC Thunderbirds home games are really fun for

the family and affordable! The Vancouver Whitecaps FC

United Soccer League Pro team will begin playing on the

David Sidoo Field at Thunderbird Stadium this spring.

If you are outdoorsy, were surrounded by endless trails

in Pacific Spirit Park and some of the most breathtaking

natural scenery in the Pacific Northwest. UBC also has

absolutely wonderful gardens and its great to be able to

    walk through them.

What does community mean to you and how is it

    experienced at UBC?

Im constantly impressed by how passionate people are

about this place. This is one of the top universities in the

world in one of the most beautiful settings in the world and

I think our community of students, faculty, staff, alumni

and residents are really proud of that it shows by how they

stay connected to UBC no matter where they are.

    A DAM PERRY,

    WESBRO OK RESIDEN T

When it comes to picking quality neighbourhoods, youd

expect a real estate professional to have a pretty strong

opinion. For Adam Perry, a VP with a local developer,

Wesbrook was the clear choice. He and his wife Melanie

(who works as a labour and employment lawyer) put down

roots here just over a year ago. And with a new Perry in

the mix their son Tatum was born this past June the

stakes for the neighbourhood just got higher.

We love the neighborhood design the thoughtful

balance of residential density, parks and open space,

shops and services. And proximity to Pacific Spirit trails

is great too (especially popular with our dog Drake).

They also love the proximity to Save-On-Foods, great

schools, facilities like the upcoming community centre,

and all the amenities that UBC campus has to offer.

(BierCraft, Doughgirls, and Murchies are all welcome

additions for the Perry family, too.)

I believe the neighbourhood will continue to improve

as the remainder of the neighbourhood is developed,

Adam says. We couldnt agree more.

    CHRISTINE CHAN,

    COMMUNIT Y ENGAGEMENT MANAGER,

    WESBROOK VILL AGE

As the Community Engagement Manager, Christines

role is to support this vital and vibrant community and

to get the word out about this place both locally and

    globally.

According to her, the people in this neighbourhood make

her job easy. Everyone is so involved and gracious, she

says. They are so proud of the community and living and

working here. The store owners know their customers by

    name, almost like family members.

As Wesbrook Village grows, that work just gets more

exciting. In Christines two and a half years at Wesbrook

Village, so many new shops have opened, local events

have continued to get better and better (with over 6,500

people attending the Wesbrook Village Festival), parks

have expanded, and more people have moved into the

neighbourhood. Its really special to play a part in all

that, in families lives, Christine says.

    S A R AH WOLTON & CHRIS BED FO RD, OWNERS ,

    H OT BOX YO G A

Hot Box Yoga founders Sarah Wolton and Chris Bedford first conceived

of their unconventional yoga business on, of all places, a beach in Sayulita,

Mexico. It was kind of a reality check/epiphany moment, says Sarah a

moment where she knew, deep down, that she wanted to devote her life to

yoga practice. The couple went on to open their first studio in January 2012

in Kelowna, and it was a wild success. Coming to the coast was a natural

evolution from there. Vancouver has always been our dream city.

When it came to location, Wesbrook Village was a no-brainer. We had this

vision in our heads of a hipster yoga studio in the Pacific Spirit forest, and

we just couldnt get the yoga treehouse image out of our minds, says Chris.

Not to mention the potential of the community, the proximity to downtown,

    and UBC campus.

The Hot Box Yoga team believes that a more lighthearted, fun approach

to yoga is seriously needed in Vancouver. We want yoga to be accessible,

affordable, and attractive to everyone. Accordingly, Hot Box Yoga

offers high-energy classes, set to fun, modern music, in a non-pretentious

environment, led by incredible West Coast teachers. All this unfolds in what

they call the Happiness Machine their name for the main studio.

The formula has proved a success. Business is booming, says Sarah, and today,

residents and visitors from across the city and indeed, the world tell her they

see Hot Box Yoga as a kind of home away from home. Epiphany, indeed.

BEST THING SINCE SL ICED BRE AD

    Doughgirls Comfort Kitchen & Bakeshop

Doughgirls is our new neighbourhood caf and bakery, inspired by the home-

cooked comfort food of the 1940s. Rose and Thuy, the partners behind this

adorable establishment, call their offering down home done right.

One whiff of the incredible breads baking here, and youll get what they

mean. Their traditional kitchen works wonders, and it goes far beyond

baguettes and buns. The emphasis is decidedly homespun, offering both

dine-in and takeout options, with quite a few surprises. Highlights include

natural lamb shepherds pie, turkey pot pie, king ranch chicken, wholesome

daily soups and, of course, southern buttermilk biscuits. The sweets, too,

like classic chocolate cake, are truly dangerous. A wide variety of Doughgirls

meals are prepared fresh, then frozen, so you can take and bake at your

leisure (and create those incredible smells in your own kitchen). Theyre

strong supporters of UBC Farm (and other local farms), and all their meats

are grass fed, free-range and non-medicated.

This place is all about a strong sense of home, and a real passion for living

expressed through food. Which is why Wesbrook Village is such a perfect

    fit for them.

BEER, MUS SELS, AND CL AS SIC FRENCH FARE

    BierCraft heads west

BierCraft Restaurant, another new arrival to Wesbrook Village, delivers an

array of premium Belgium beers to the neighbourhood and serves beautiful

brunch, lunch, and dinner too. First, the beers. With more than 120 craft

beers and 32 taps, beer boredom is out of the question. BierCraft is a Belgian

concept, and thus the menu gives pride of place to that country, but the Pacific

Northwest is well represented. This is a place for true beer lovers, whether

    traditional, or way-out-there experimental.

Beer is only the beginning, though. The food at BierCraft stands alone.

For brunch, youll find classics like eggs benny, excellent waffles, and kids

breakfast. For lunch, standouts include homemade burgers, soups, pulled

pork sandwiches, and (of course) incredible mussels. And the dinner menu, a

French-inspired bistro concept, is decidedly continental. The wine list is also

formidable, with sommelier Mark Taylor curating the vintages.

So for a beautiful pull from the taps, or tapas, or a gorgeous meal at any point

in the day, we could hardly ask for a better addition to the neighbourhood.

Stop by BierCraft Restaurant soon and try it out for yourself.

HIGH T IME FOR HIGH TE A

Murchies brings a storied tea tradition to Wesbrook Village

Tea is taking off in popular culture. And Murchies, a

120-year-old B.C. company with a proud history, has

been here all along. With some of the best teas in the

marketplace, including family recipes more than a

century old, Murchies truly is steeped in tradition.

The company began in 1894 in New Westminster, B.C.,

born from the vision of founder (and notable tea purveyor)

John Murchie. John had a proud history in the finest of

teas, and was known in the U.K. for his innovative blends.

Indeed, in his home country of Scotland, John delivered

one of his signature concoctions, the Queen Victoria

blend, directly to the Queen herself!

Today, Murchies is a proud Canadian institution, rooted

in that storied British tradition. With more than 100

loose-leaf teas, including everything from their famous

Earl Grey to beautifully nuanced green-black blends

(rather uncommon) to the finest oolongs and jasmine

peach blossoms, Murchies is like a shop of wonders

for tea lovers. New to the wide world of tea? This is the

perfect place to get an introduction and to get yourself

equipped to explore further, with pots, strainers, and

other accoutrements. (These all make great gifts, by the

    way, for your tea-curious friends.)

A proud, long story, with a chapter now set to begin in

our own neighbourhood. Heres to the next century of

    high tea culture!

Wesbrook Village has always believed that diverse housing is crucial to the

vitality and to the longevity of this community. So the neighbourhood

offers living options to accommodate pretty much anyone who would like to

to buy or rent in Wesbrook for the long term, to students and families

attending UBC (or University Hill Secondary, or any of the other top-

There are a few new additions to the neighbourhood to note. Nobel House

Mundell Park, just off Scholars Greenway, is a welcome addition to Wesbrooks

collection of parks and playgrounds. The new park, named for famed economist

and UBC grad Robert Mundell, features an imaginative new play area, and a

podium thats ideal for spring and summer picnics.

The public realm at Wesbrook is a key component of this neighbourhoods

livability. From the connected water features of Khorana Park and Smith Park,

to the piazza feel of Norman Mackenzie Square, to the community gardens and

softball diamond at Nobel Park, to the soccer fields at Brockhouse Park, this

neighbourhood is definitely rich in outdoor spaces to play and gather.

    VANCOUVERS EXEMPLARY WEST SIDE SCHOOLS

    H E A D W E S T , Y O U N G M I N D S

The west side of Vancouver offers an enviable depth of educational options. These are, quite simply, some of the best and highest-ranked schools in the province and indeed, the country. The following list is just a sample of the many venerated schools that dot this part of the city.

University Hill Secondary School (Public)The newest addition to the Wesbrook neighbourhood, UHill offers top-level instruction, a rich culture, and backyard access to UBCs campus & facilities. A top-ranked institution. (This location opened in January 2013.)

Norma Rose Point Elementary (Public)In the former location of UHill Secondary, Norma Rose Point is committed to nurturing knowledgeable, caring and responsible citizens every day. (Opened September 2014.)

St. Georges School (Private, K-12, boys)Founded in 1930, this venerated school is among the premier private academies in this country, and is touted as Canadas world school for boys.

Eaton Arrowsmith School (Private, supplemental)Employing advanced techniques in neuroplasticity, the Eaton Arrowsmith School helps kids with unconventional learning needs excel in all conditions.

Queen Mary Elementary (Public)Located next to Trimble Park in the stately West Point Grey neighbourhood, Queen Mary fosters an ethos of good citizenship and ethnic diversity, with very active parents and quality school programs.

West Point Grey Academy (Private, K-12, co-ed)Set on 18 acres with sweeping views of English Bay and the North Shore mountains, West Point Grey offers future-focused curricula to kids at every stage.

Kitsilano Secondary (Public)Founded in 1917, Kits has a proud history of both athletic achievements (including several Olympic athletes) and academic achievements (including Rhodes Scholars).

Lord Byng Secondary (Public)This storied West Point Grey public secondary school officially opened in 1925 and was named in honour of Julian Hedworth George Byng, the hero of Vimy Ridge.

Queen Elizabeth School (Public, 4-7, elementary)Located directly across from Camosun Park, this elementary offers top-notch instruction, plus a notable strings program.

Queen Elizabeth Elementary Annex (Public, K-3)This school for youngsters from kindergarten to grade 3 is moments away from Wesbrook Village a true neighbourhood elementary.

A sports arena, especially on a university campus, is often

viewed as mostly a varsity affair: a place to catch school

sports, and not much else. Not so with Thunderbird Arena.

This facility is a true gathering place for culture on campus

as well as a nexus for sport in this community at large.

The variety of events that unfold at Thunderbird Arena is

stunning, and its effectively a block from Wesbrook which

certainly adds to the excitement in the neighbourhood. On

the sporting side, weve seen the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas

(going on four times), the Yonex Canada Badminton Open,

the Olympics and Special Olympics and many, many

others. On the culture side, His Holiness the Dalai Lama

recently spoke to a rapt crowd. Sesame Street Live sang

and danced to a somewhat more, well, diminutive young

audience. And recent musical performances from artists

hailing from Hong Kong, China, South America, and Iran

(to name a few) have cemented the venues reputation as a

    highly versatile performance space.

The big-ticket shows are just part of the story here. The

arena is in fact the central feature for Doug Mitchell

Thunderbird Sports Centre, a larger complex that includes

two more rinks, a high performance training area, and other

facilities. The complex plays a very important role as a year-

round gathering space for sport, for UBC and the wider

community, hosting more than 1,200 guests a week at more

than 190 athletic programs, and running more than 100

weekly hockey games. This facility has some grand shows,

definitely. But it also serves this community week after

week, as part of UBCs larger athletic offering.

To find out more about upcoming events or how you

can make Thunderbird Arena part of your life visit
