BASEd ON THE CURRICULUM UTILIzEd by most of the universities, all college freshmen of the Philippines should undergo the National Service Training Program (NSTP), in which they have the freedom to choose between Civil Welfare Training Service (CWTS) or Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC).

But with the national security threatened many times, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) proposed the revision of the NSTP Law stating that all male college students are required to go through the ROTC.

According to the statement of AFP spokesperson Brigadier General Jose Mabanta in the Inquirer.net, the revival of the ROTC in the Philippines would yield to a more robust and firm Armed Forces. Mabanta also said that the ROTC teaches discipline, patriotism, nationalism and love of country. The NSTP was revised in 2001, making the program applicable even for female college students and making the CWTS as an option for entering college freshmen. The law was revised following the death of Cadet Mark Chua of the University of Sto. Tomas, who made an exposé on the alleged misdeeds in the unit. Such incidents prompted the ROTC to review and modify its program.

Wesleyan University – Philippines (WU-P) is one of the Philippine universities which currently offers ROTC and through the years, the effort of advance reserve officers WU-P ROTC Unit is identified as one of the most recognized and progressive unit in the region.

Last year, eighty five (85) female cadets graduated the MS-2 training while only eighty (80) male cadets of the WU-P ROTC Unit were able to complete the course.

Due this, WU-P ROTC stays on a hot seat regarding the observation of AFP, that female students are more interested to the field than the male students.

“If the training is as rigorous and difficult as they claim it to be, then they can just ask our past cadets,” current WU-P ROTC Unit Corps Commander c/Ltc Christine Joy A. Carbonel said. Genré

AS THE NEW SEMESTER BEGAN, THE newly appointed Officer-In-Charge of the College of Nursing and Allied Medical Sciences (CONAMS), Dr. Norvin T. Miguel implemented new policies in line with the mission of the university to provide quality education.

According to a memorandum by Dean Miguel, quality education means helping the students not only by shaping them mentally but also equipping them physically to become better productive professionals.

The new course of actions stated in the memorandum includes that all students under the CONAMS shall only be permitted to enter the university if they are wearing the complete prescribed school uniforms, except during civilian days. CONAMS students are also required to wear their ID cards at all times, in observance with the “No ID, No Entry” policy.

The college ordinance obliged all male students to have their hair clean cut as well. Hair must not touch their ears, otherwise students will be advised to have their hair cut immediately. If the students fail to follow the rules which will be documented by a recording system provided by the college, they will not be allowed to enter the university. Dean Miguel also ordered that male students wearing earrings will be prohibited from entering the campus.

Due to the proposal of AFP regarding ROTC scheme,

Meanwhile, the new set of college policies also compelled the female students to have their hair neatly bun with hair net.

In line with these regulations, Dr. Miguel asked for the cooperation of security department, professors and students as well to carry out the college rules. “I believe that we are all one in our vision, thus, I am anticipating your usual cooperation,” Dean Miguel said.

Reactions followed the implementation of the policy as CONAMS students aired

some negative views. Majority of the female students retorted to the on-going implementation of the policy. In response to these feedbacks, the dean explained the importance of following school policies for the good of the entire college and the university as well. He said that sanctions will be imposed on certain violators according to the provisions of the policy. Genré

Filipino authors have obviously taken the limelight from foreign writers in the past year. Acknowledging the greater need to adapt, Filipino authors have taken measures beyond conven-

tions. Here are two of the finest books, my favorites, actually.

SEROKSIn this book by David Hontiveros, we will journey into a third-mil-

lennium world where the Philippine economic pyramid was brutally truncated and re-duced to its apex of elites after the masses were wiped out to extinction by a biological weapon. However, those who were fortunate enough to be spared had a groundbreaking idea to recognize the need for a new breed of people to en-slave and abuse: clones. Clones for adoption (for the childless yet moneyed), clones for labor, clones for prostitution, clones for spare organs, even clones for meat and cuisine.

Hontiveros will take us in a dimension where everything is a product for trade and people are not only victims but specimens

“It is always more fun in this university because there are many things that only Wesleyan has.”

We should be proud that Wesleyan is our home. Our school possesses every good thing that other universities never had –streaming that WU-P is a unique place for exceptional students.

To give attest, here are some things which are exclusively found in the campus:

Books

CCTV CAMERAS ARE WATCHING YOUIndeed, Wesleyan is the home of high-tech

devices and the most advanced facilities in Nueva Ecija. Our school is surrounded with closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras which are very functional.

Views and different opinions came up with the Wesleyan community. Some say that the administration wants to promote safety of the campus from burglary, malicious acts of fellow students and other similar cases. Others think it’s a waste of money.

BEAUTY AT ITS BESTLet the carpet be unfolded. The light shines

truly on every Wesleyanian. Our school was

for piracy. A world where the reality is dark and a phony can be hailed a hero. Prophetic and truthful, SEROKS embarks upon sev-eral socio-cultural issues that may relatively be our future if tech-nology remains uninhibited and the ravenous hunger for wealth and power rises beyond morality.

SEROKS Iteration 1: Mirror Man is a first in a series of short fic-tion anthologies set in a dystopian plot. The idea was first born when Hontiveros won in the 2002 Palanca Awards for his short story “Kaming Mga Seroks” included in the book.

“Asia has always been big on piracy. Decades ago it was video and audio CD’s (remember those?). Today, it’s people. That’s what a dupe is: a pirated copy of a particular genetic sequence. A clone of a clone.

Naturally, certain modifications were made in the collectives in Chongqing and Hangzhou where my kind were grown. From tin-kering with melanin levels to darken skin color, to altering particular dispositions and personality quirks, the changes were made so we can better adjust to life in a third world country (as opposed to a Western country, for which a dupe’s template was undoubtedly made).”

-David Hontiveros, SEROKS Iretation 1: Mirror Man, 2012 VIS-PRINT, INC.

PARA KAY BRicky Lee has had proven himself brilliant yet in another artistic field – proving that contemporary literature needs not to be im-prisoned by the rules and conventions of those veterans in the Philippine prose.

once branded as “University of Banners” because of the prestige brought home by teachers, students and alumni who have continuously been awarded in the different fields of competition.

Let us salute them for making us proud.

We hope for more banners next year because we believe that next year will be another better year for Wesleyans – to be known in different fields, to top board exams and to win various contests. We look forward to the continuous support of WU-P administration to students whose purpose is not just to enjoy the money of the school but more importantly to represent the university.

GREAT STUDENT POWERThe greatest means for the growth of a

school is to have great student power. This is based on the reality that a school does not exist without students.

For the past months, we have noticed that our beloved university is quiet on hostilities between

administration and students. There are no acts of strikes or rallies imaging student’s democracy over the administration.

Another thing to consider, if all those mentioned in preceding paragraphs really occur, we deem that some of it are part of everyone’s imagination for some points, there is an subsisting gap between the higher-ups and those who are not in authority, the students. Some cases include withholding of budgets for students’ activities, at time we are scolded because of our write-ups. We do not exist, though, for some idiocy. We are here neither to market anyone nor to showcase our school. Indeed, Genre is here to listen to everyone’s feelings and to represent every student’s expression.

FLAWS OVER PERFECTIONSSometimes, it is interesting to talk about facts.

It is nicer to look towards what is right. However, there are times that imperfections prevail over perfections and we feel like laughing every time we remember them. Who says that Wesleyan is perfect?

Opinion

In his first attempt for a novel (and I say it’s a success), we will meet sev-eral characters in Para Kay B whose unified aim is to tap the reader’s mind to be toler-able enough to the shadowy realities of love as a dynamic creature that has a mind of its own AND to prove whether love has a quota. Clever and sensual in a light and amusing plot which has vulnerable characters that can be more human than the hu-man reader. Once you read Para Kay B, you can do nothing but to allow yourself to eat through every page, devour every word in it, and digest every idea herewith. You’ll laugh and be hurt, be fas-cinated and addicted to a work of art by a superb scriptwriter of classic Filipino films like Moral, Anak, and Himala. Ooh, and yes. Lee will be directing the Para Kay B movie adaptation now underway.“Me quota ang pag-ibig. “Neural handshake initiated. Pilot-to-pilot connection engaged”.

After Independence Day, 2012, and other apocalypse-slash-alien-invasion flicks, Guillermo del Torro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) comes up with the iconic monster versus robot battle with Pacific Rim.

An action-packed eye-candy, Pacific Rim boasts with ambitious and imaginative CGI that fills all the gaps in the movie.

Pacific Rim sports that classic sci-fi feel as we devour through the film. It’s a technology and mythology synched into a compelling harmony of realistic fiction and credibly futuristic machinery that will make every ten year old (and ten-year-old-at-hearts) drool over the effects and combat scenes.

The premise explains how these extra-terrestrial monsters called Kaiju (Japanese, “strange beast”) were teleported through a wormhole located at a breach between two tectonic plates under the Pacific Ocean and started to appear and wreak havoc on the major cities in the region.

“The first Kaiju made land in San Francisco (2013), the second attack hit Manila, then the third hit Cabo. Then we learned… this was not going to stop”.

It’s up for us humans to “Go big or go extinct” (wait a minute, isn’t that what the dinosaurs did?). Two years after the first Kaiju attack (by then, these beasts were exterminated either by brute force or by nuclear assault), the Jaegers (German, “hunter”) were deployed to stop these aliens from destroying the planet.

Thus the Jaeger program was born under the Pan Pacific Defense Corps – an army of brave fighters, later to be hailed as a resistance, trained to pilot the giant robots using a Neural Handshake or a compatible linkage between the two pilots of a Jaeger called the Drift, two pilots melding

Feature Stories

memories with body and machine. The deeper the bond, the better they fight.

In this neural bond, the two pilots enter each other’s minds, share memories, and often harmonize emotions, to control “two-thousand five hundred tons of awesome”. It’s technically a bind that enables each pilot to control the left and right hemispheres of the Jaeger’s core processors (both digital and analog) thus manipulating the machine’s every movement.

From the given fillers, you can just picture the whole movie: fast-paced. There’s so much going in here that you might not even notice something’s missing, unless you are vigilant enough to see flaws or too persistent to watch it over and over again (in my case, seven times in a row) and see them.

What Pacific Rim lacks is depth in character. The actors were more likely attitude vessels than actual persona in the movie. The cast could have been more involved in the movie rather than focusing on heavy-metal scenes, something the script fell in short.

Beyond a couple of superficial dramatic backstories, there is no real conflict in the central characters in individuality and personality (unlike in The Avengers). It has a sort of detached viewing experience although emotional involvement might actually be disregarded in times of war. Considering.

Pacific Rim feels like homage to anime and Japanese stories crossed over archetypal movies of the west like Deep Blue Sea, Independence Day, Dark of the Moon, 2012, etc.

But it works. At least, that’s how I see it: an East meets West literature in terms of script.

Del Torro shot the movie in familiar locations. Expect Hong Kong on the

brink of catastrophe and some scenes reminiscent of Hellboy where the black market and slums of Hong Kong were seen.

Despite imperfections, Pacific Rim loads with a great science based fiction and almost-convincing mythos that can really make someone stop for a moment and think what if Krakkens and sea monsters were actually aliens that came from inter-dimensional portals under the sea. XD

Plus, it packs several punch lines that seem to be comical and laugh-worthy. Now that’s lifting the iron curtain off the seriousness of the coming apocalypse.

Charlie Hunnam (worn-out war veteran Raleigh Becket, Jaeger pilot – Gipsy Danger), Rinko Kikuchi (Becket’s rookie co-pilot), and Idris Elba (PPDC Marshall Stacker Pentecost, all time hero and patriot by heart) are some of the cast.

A 3.75 out of five if I were to rate, del Torro surely knows how to draw a blockbuster. CGI-packed Pacific Rim might not be his thing; still, I’d spend my money for this refreshing humanity-on-the-edge-of-extermination movie. You’ll enjoy the graphics and drool

over the mecha (wait ‘til

you

see Gipsy Danger, Crimson Typhoon, and Cherno Alpha head on against two Category 4 Kaijus!).

This movie speaks to the kid in me in a way similar to how Power Rangers made me cheer when I was four yet in a higher, more mature level. Thrilling, fun, epic. Pacific Rim rocks.

P.S. I think it’s time to make a trend against bullying using “Elbow Rocket, engage”!

“Everyone, listen up!Today, at the edge of our hope, at the

end of our time, we’ve chosen not only to believe in ourselves but in each other.

Today there’s not a man nor woman in here that shall stand alone. Today we face the monsters that are at our door, and we are cancelling the apocalypse”!

Philippine myths still have a dynamic role in the lives of countryside Filipinos. The various myths

circulating throughout the Filipino countryside encompass a large variety of mythical creatures. Though there is no precise evidence about the presence of any of these creatures, there are people in the rural parts of the Philippines who believe firmly in the existence of these creatures. The Philippines has many islands that are occupied by different ethnic groups.

Superstitions and mythology are very diverse. Different cultures have their own myths that have been handed down from generation to generation. Myths reflect the customs, traditions, and practices of different ethnic groups. Each unique ethnic group has its own stories and myths to tell. Some stories include deities, creation stories, mythical creatures, and beliefs which vary among the many indigenous tribes of the Philippines. The Spanish era contributed a lot to the culture and traditions of the people living in the country. Some chose to worship trees and forest deities while others believe in a supreme God who created everything.

As we go back to the past, we see people worshiping their gods and goddesses in many different ways. To mention some of the Tagalog deities: Bathala, the chief deity of the Tagalogs, Lakampati, the major fertility deity of the ancient Tagalogs, Pati who calls the rain, is looked upon

On the edge

Indespicable Minions

We often make assessments that may affect our lives at certain points. At least five percent of the student population is aware of the unusual things that may their stay in this university.

Is it a fault to be aware? It is just ironic that the people who tell us that to be right, just and truthful tend to alter

things in their own design affecting a particular entity resulting to the breach of trust. Is it really necessary for a person to be taught with values? Or is it just another waste of time? I know of people, those who undergo the complex process of growing up, who are deaf and blind to what is right and what is wrong. Man is supposed to know what is upright and what is otherwise.

Try teaching ethics. Or ignorance instead. We are in a Christian institution. We are expected to act according to the standards

within the boundaries of what we are taught. But that doesn’t mean that we will not try to reach beyond what is in front of us. Given the privilege of being the highest form of animal, do we really need to impound ourselves within certain rules.

We are all at the edge of becoming someone. We are practically destined to be somebody. Letting anybody fall while lifting himself towards his most awaited triumph makes him a nobody at all.

Before considering what is practical, try being human first.

accumulated PerspectivesRolando C. Iniwan, Jr.editor-In-chief

As I seek through the tiniest neurons on my brain what to write for our first issue that may influence students of this university, a simple thought found its way directing my focus to my dream of becoming a minion on my second life and rather think of what is the major issue of my generation.

How can we really achieve all our dreams? Are there certain rules? or maybe factors?

We often get pressured by the fact that going through college is a serious thing that makes it difficult for us to take into consideration which route to choose.

Parents, practicality and passion are some of the probable factors that we may want to seek

advice from. Our parents always want us to achieve our

goals in ways that will not hurt us as much as possible. Our parents identify the boundaries of our choices. They set before our eyes options to consider. However, goals can be reached by anyone who perseveres; fulfilment comes otherwise.

Practicality on the other hand is the most requested partner of all time. We choose on the basis of statistics... would you like me to elaborate on things you already know?

Do you really care about your future?I care about your job. But I don’t care about

you, because I’m feeling twenty two.

But, seriously in everything that you do, there is nothing more fulfilling than pursuing your passion even in the most impossible ways – This is what they say but in reality, nowadays, sticking to our passion may not be the brightest idea we can have.

So what can we take into consideration?I, for one, don’t even know. Could you wait till

I get some answers? Or when I become your personal consultant?

We are in a world where restrictions create barriers within ourselves. But it is our choice if we break them or make something meaningful out of them. It is still we who can decide how to manage our lives even when others keep telling

us what to do and what not to do. We will always be responsible of our own actions and decisions.

I was quite serious when I’ve said about becoming a minion someday. This is not a joke. I wallow into thinking of becoming nothing but becoming something at the same time and of course becoming adorably annoying.

So where did my dream of being a minion come from? Being productive? Doing little things that can contribute to the well being of another without asking him something in return makes a person a human.

What about doing everything we can to influence others to do better? To transform ourselves at the expense of others is rather unacceptable, though.

So, before deciding on what’s what, take a deep breath. It is not about what path we chose; it is all about how you handle problems during tough times and how we manage to keep our feet on the ground no matter how high we’ve become.

We are in a world where restrictions are carefully

blocked to create barriers within ourselves.

Opinions‘Monsters’ University

Yes, let’s own it up. We’re born in a world of inconsistency. Most of us are infected with this type of illness leading us to transform anytime into a monster.

mcluhan’s meatspaceKevin Rey p. Sagunmanaging editor

As I lurk around the campus every day, so much stuff are always bugging my mind.

Once, I was watching a security guard while arguing with a “war-freak high-pitched naiwan-ko-ID-ko” student from entering the gate. I was on my way to admire him but then afterwards, I was surprised when he gracefully allowed a lady wearing sleeveless and shorts “fashionista-wannabe” to have a catwalk entrance.

Yes, let’s own it up. We’re born in a world of inconsistency. Most of us are infected with this type of illness leading us to transform anytime into a monster, otherwise known as ‘monsters of inconsistency’.

Three years of observation is not enough to classify all of them but I can specify the all-time-favorite monsters inside this university.

***gate-crashing monsters

No offense here. Some years ago, wearing inappropriate types of outfits was restricted. Of course, it doesn’t improve your academic performance though. But let us remember: we are carrying the name of Wesleyan University – Philippines not only here but also outside the campus. We have the ability to bring maybe honor or disgrace to it. Imagine if other

institutions say “Ay, grabe tignan mo ung suot. Sa Wesleyan nag-aaral ung bata na yun eh.”

A further question that always trek around my head, “What is the problem with identification card?” as I told earlier, most students (even me, sometimes) always argue with the security guard when they’re not allowed to enter without IDs. Then I realized, “Bakit nga ba madalas ayaw magsuot ng ID ng maraming estudyante?”

Aside from, “Pangit kasi ako sa picture,” I guess there’s no more reason that they can think of though. According to our students’ handbook, wearing ID inside school premises at all times is strictly imlemented.

‘At all times’ corresponds to being consistent, right?

Security monsters Oh, these are the monsters I so loved the

most. I actually don’t want to bring this up, but I would for the sake of being unbiased for the ‘GCMonsters’. At Genré, we’ve started working for more than a month for this school year. Since then, we have conducted four press works but the last one was different.

Same method: compose an excuse letter; include the names of attending staffers, signed

by appropriate signatories, then boom. But one time, we submitted it to the security office and after reading it they said, “Sa susunod, ilalagay nyo dito kung overnight hano?”, “Sino ba tong…” while making a roll-call.

Yes, it was absolutely right to check these kinds of things. That was the standard procedure actually. I salute you sirs and madams not only for you having a remarkable profession, but also for being there to care and protect us. But the question that bothers me, “After all those overnight press works, bakit ngayon lang sila nag-check ng ga’non sa’min?”

‘no to collection, no to corruption policy’ monsters

I evoked what I’ve read in a mural the last time while travelling in the streets of Manila:

“The law applies to all. Otherwise, none at all.”

Can we define ‘policy’ again? How about copyright infringing?

Nah. Let’s not talk about the second one but let me discuss to you the “no to collection, no to corruption policy”. As implemented, anyone in this university is not allowed to collect any amount of money from students.

Can we take ‘photocopying’ of hand-outs as

example? Although students are not obliged to pay for a copy, they have to compel themselves to get one as if it was the only option for them to cope with their lessons. Ironically, most (not all) are reproducing lecture-aids that are copyrighted. Oops, I fail to remember that I will not tell anything about copyright infringement.

rebel-rock star monstersMost of the time, being insensitive doesn’t

make us famous.Aside from being a GCMonster, students

have their own unique talents, specifically being a rebel-rock star. We all love music, absolutely. But the problem in our case, we cannot handle it correctly. From screaming and shouting to tapping and pounding the table to the loudest point, classrooms are never built as ‘recording studios’ so please consider students having classes nearby before beating the table.

We all have the capability to voice out and express what we want. But, horrific words like ‘t*ng in* mo pare!’ and ‘sh*t! g*go ka talaga!’ nah. Sounds bad right? Absolutely, one must never forget that the main purpose why we came to this university is to learn and educate ourselves, not to curse our friends and colleagues even in a funny manner.

***Monsters lurk everywhere. As of this

moment, you may not be conscious that you’re one of them. Maybe, as of now you pretend that you don’t belong to any cluster of monster cited before. The most important thing is, we must never let this virus contaminate our system and control us from being inconsistent.

Magsusunog na ako ng kilaySayang ang kanilang

scarletBrenda Lynne AguilarDevcom editor

As in nawala talaga ang taray mood ko.

AdieuJan Adrian F. Delos Santos

The morning mist blazes and I called it fascination,Then sun rises amidst, as I christened it as obsession.

Orange silhouette from sunset wrapped me, just like my passion,‘Til the night glowing stars burned my soul towards repulsion.

I remember, it was late in the evening.A nighttime when my wit scolded my thinking.

It was night, yes, ‘til I glimpsed the dew of morningA morning of mourning as my tears were falling.

I reminisced that fast past,The hour during those colors were on our husk.

But the sun overshone and razed it with rust,Whilst lust sorrowfully remains at last.

I know it was just a matter of ‘hi’ and ‘goodbye’,Just like how doves play, and then fly.

It was just like a morning until I embraced the evening,When every beginning crashes down to its own ending.

To laugh in the rainFaith Chloe Patacsil

The thunder starts to roar,The lightning begins to strike; The water seems to fall,What a rainy day it would be like?

Laying down on my bed,I turned the music on;Can’t get the tune out of my head,I decided to sing along.

The loud rattling clunks by the window,It brought me out of my daze; The sound of the falling rain drops in the meadow,I chose to get off of my place.

A long time ago, a wish has been made,To feel and experience the dewdrops above my head;As I close my eyes and forget all the pain,My wish has come true; to laugh in the rain.

Miami heat reigns as champions after defeating the San Antonio Spurs on the recently concluded NBA Finals held at the American Arena, Miami Florida. The game began last June 6 ending at June 20 and have reached Game 7.Behind an inspired effort from ruling, MVP LeBron James became the sixth different franchise in league history to win back-to-back champions by holding off the Spurs, 95-98 in the Game 7 of NBA finals. LeBron finished the game 37 points and 12 rebounds on 12 of 23 shooting.

Tim Duncan overcame a slow start to finish with 20 points and 14 rebounds. James parker of Spurs ended up with 21 points giving Spurs a four-point edge in Game 1. Spurs tried to resist LeBron James to beat the Miami heat, 92-98. The Spurs came out and rained down a final record 16 threes led by Gary Neal with 6, Danny Green with 7, those two combined for 51. The Miami Heat defeated the San Antonio Spurs, 103-84, in Game 2 to even the series at 1-1. The Spurs is persistent to do an excellent job packing the paint and keeping James out of the lane, forcing the league MVP to trust heavily on jumpers. While Miami looked tired and roamed aimlessly on offense, San Antonio pushed from end-to-end. The Spurs won the battle on the boards by a margin of 16, and dragged down a staggering 19 offensive rebounds. San Antonio Spurs thrashed the Miami Heat, 113-77 in Game 3.

The defense of Miami that hasn’t fully been seen in this series showed up in Game 4. The Heat played energetically at that end, causing a number of deflections and easy scores the other way for the Heat. dwayne Wade put together a valid game, as his team put away the San Antonio Spurs 109-93. The win evens the series at 2-2, with a big Game 5.

The Spurs had ruled the game through the first three quarters, leading by 10 points after the third quarter. But James, who struggled greatly in the first three quarters, took over in the fourth. He led from the front on offense and defense, serving as the catalyst for easy looks for his teammates. Miami went on a 20-7 run to take a three-point lead with five and a half minutes remaining... Another five minutes is what it took to grasp a Miami Heat Game 6 victory. Miami took down the San Antonio Spurs 103-100 in overtime.

LeBron James scores 37 points and takes 12 rebounds and hits some shots late to lead the Heat to a 95-88 victory over the Spurs in Game 7 for the Heat’s second consecutive NBA Championship. James was the Finals MVP. He was the 5th player to win consecutive Finals MVP awards (Michael Jordan, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, and Hakeem Olajuwon). “I ain’t got no worries, man,” LeBron stated after the Game 7. I’m overwhelmed to witnessed LeBron James who showed up his full participation to his team to reign the title of back-to-back champions because of his skills and determination to win.
