Halcyon House, located in Washington, Iowa, is a WesleyLife Community for Healthy Living, and part of the Washington-based network of services that includes WesleyLife at Home and Lending Hands Adult Day Center.

WesleyLifeWesleyLife is a faith-based, nonprofit organization that has been serving older adults for nearly 70 years. The organization

is headquartered in Johnston, Iowa, and offers seven Communities for Healthy Living in Iowa, along with eight comprehensive service networks serving 15 counties. Those networks offer a range of services tailored to the needs of older adults, including adult day centers, short-term rehabili-tation, hospice, nutritious meals, transportation, personal services, and home healthcare.

Transforming careIn 2015, Halcyon House began a new building project on its campus as part of a major capital investment project aimed at transforming the aging experience for residents and community members.

Three new skilled nursing households are being built that will incorporate the latest philosophies around aging well. The project includes a secure memory support household, short-term rehabil-itation household, and long-term healthcare and hospice household.

In addition, renovations include a new dining room, multipurpose activity space, new campus entrance with canopy and direct access to inde-pendent living.

Halcyon House has created a true home setting with “homemakers” who prepare meals, take care of housekeeping and laundry, and build warm relationships, while providing the services a resident may need throughout the day; just as a family member would.

Arbor House presently has 16 memory care suites for persons with early to mid-stage Alzheimer’s or other forms of memory loss. Ground was broken in June 2015 on an 18-suite memory care household that incorporates the latest philosophies around aging well. This addition to our memory support will serve those with late-stage memory loss.

Avalon House currently offers 37 rooms for skilled nursing long-term healthcare and seven residential care suites. A new building project at Halcyon House is underway with a new health center serving as the centerpiece of the plan.

“Get Well, Go Home” short-term rehabilitation services Halcyon House is Medicare-certified with 24-hour on-site clinical staff offering skilled nursing, rehabilitation and post-acute care services.

Our focus is helping each individual establish and exceed their personal recovery goals after a surgery, illness or an injury.

Our rehabilitation professionals are specialized in treating individuls recover-ing from orthopedic injuries or surgery, stroke, neuromuscular insufficiency or cardiac conditions. We work with each person’s physician to create a collaborative treatment plan using the latest technology, combined with a home-like atmosphere, to ensure we care for each individual’s therapeutic needs and personal wishes.

Caring for someone you love takes unwaver-ing commitment and an endless amount of love. At Lending Hands Adult Day Center, we’re here to help both of you. You’ll be the caregiver you desire and your loved one will maintain their independence and well-being.

Lending Hands ensures individuals who need assistance and involvement during the day enjoy a renewed sense of independence, while also receiving the support and encouragement they need. Lending Hands provides an environment focusing on what participants “can” do by giving them a purposeful and fulfilling day.

Caring and compassionate team membersTeam members work closely with each participant, along with loved ones, to create a personalized program tailored to each person. They take time to get to know participants on an individual basis, discovering their special interests, supporting them in their challeng-es, and encouraging independence in mind and spirit. This approach creates an enriching environment for every person we serve – an environment where they are able to live life to the fullest.

Who can participate?Adult day services are available for any adult age 45 or older who desires social interaction with other adults or who has experienced a decreased ability to accom-plish daily tasks independently. This includes persons with memory loss, mobility challenges or other health concerns.

What does a typical day look like?The center provides a coordinated program of professional and compassionate services for adults in a community-based group setting. Social events provide interaction with other participants and are tailored to specific needs.

Transportation services can be arranged, giving caregivers peace of mind that their loved ones are traveling to and from Lending Hands safely. Participants also enjoy a sense of independence.

Meals and refreshments are delicious and dietitian-approved according to each person’s nutritional needs.

Personal care assistance includes regular health assessments and provides assistance with activities of daily living, like bathing. Weight, blood pressure, podiatry care, dietary habits and cognitive skills are regularly monitored. Staff nurses collaborate with participants’ doctors, adhering to all orders regarding medications, diet and overall health and well-being.

Daily events provide exercise and mental interaction for all participants, helping maintain physical strength and flexibility, as well as mental acuity. Plenty of laughter and fun also offer valuable therapeutic benefits.
