If you Love to Sing or would just like to try out a FREE singing coaching experience then read on.

Within our local community we have a wide variety of musical and artistic groups, many of whom are benefitting from renewed public interest in choral singing, influenced for example, by Gareth Malone’s TV series “The Choir”.

Aberdeen’s own Granite City Chorus is one group of enthusiastic men who would love to share their singing experiences with others and encourage more men to take advantage of all the positive benefits which stem from being a member of an active choral group.

Apart from the social benefits, singing is officially good for your health! Many clinical studies have reported a variety of health benefits including better posture, higher energy levels, enhanced feelings of relaxation, mood, and confidence and we’re often told we look better! Psychological benefits are also evident when people sing together because of the increased sense of community, belonging and shared purpose. The chorus currently has around forty five members with a wide variation in age and

musical ability, who all love to sing and are addicted to ringing chords in four part unaccompanied harmony. The chorus performs at local events and festivals throughout the year appearing at many local venues and corporate functions and also travels to compete in various competitions having performed as far away as Dublin and Bournemouth. The chorus is holding a free one day “Love to Sing” event at the Doubletree Hotel, Beach Boulevard on Sunday 19th Jan 2014, aimed at encouraging both new singers and existing singers to come along and experience a day of music and voice coaching in an informal and friendly environment. No prior singing experience is necessary for this fun, unique and enjoyable day out, which could just turn out to be your new addiction!

So come along and find or rediscover your singing voice.

Absolutely no commitment - just enjoying the day is fine.

A note from Sue...

Happy New Year to you all.

I hope you had the best Christmas and 2014 is off to a great start.

My year ended with me getting the flu! (Which has had a slight impact on the magazine - sorry.) I’m very lucky as I do not get ill too often but forget just how awful it is to be stuck in bed and having no energy to do anything. So those that are suffering

at the moment I wish you a very speedy recovery and hope you have a wonderful nursemaid to ease the pain.

So, have you set yourself an unrealistic New Year’s Resolution? I think we sometimes put too much emphasis on the big changes we’d like to make and forget to acknowledge the tiny changes that we did make throughout the year. Looking back over 2013 what little changes did you actually achieve? This year I’m starting a wee jar and everytime something good happens I’m popping a note in the jar and at the end of the year I hope to have a lovely jar of memories to share.

This year I will again be supporting Bling Fling charity who in turn raises funds for Archway Respite Care and Cancer

Research. Do you have a little or unknown charity that would benefit from some space? I have seven eighth page slots to give away - over the six issues - so please do put forward the charity of your choice and let’s get it noticed locally.

Events - well what have you planned for 2014? Let us know in plenty of time and I’ll get them listed for you. Encourage people to attend and support.

Tara is our new Teen Writer! She will have the last word in the magazine over the next year. I hope that she will enlighten us on how the young are feeling/thinking at the moment. Possibly help us understand them a little better too.

My space is finished so enjoy this first issue of 2014 and go and re-fill your cuppa and enjoy the rest of the magazine.

Until the next issue, Sue

Woodburn WalkersIt is the start of another year.

The decorations have been packed away. The turkey and Christmas cake are but a distant memory, or perhaps contributing to that inexplicable tightening of the waistband. Now is the time to think of getting a bit fitter and perhaps joining a walking club. The winter days are short but can be bright and sunny and there`s nothing better than a brisk walk in lovely surroundings in the company of friendly, like-minded folk.

Woodburn Walkers is a local group which welcomes anyone over 55. We meet fortnightly on Tuesdays at Hazlehead Park by the bus shelter. In January and February we choose local walks, each led by members who have planned out the walk in advance. These walks are free to our members and guests and can vary from 5 to 7 miles. There is always an option for those who would prefer a shorter walk.

From March to November we hire a coach thus enabling us to enjoy the great variety of landscapes in the north east- from the Moray coast, to the smaller hills and glens of Deeside and many lovely woodland walks. There is something for everybody.

We are a cheerful, friendly group, so why not give us a call. Angela on 318734 and Frances on 821753 would be delighted to hear from you

What happened

in January…1962By Patrick D Cousins

On 1st January 1962 The Beatles, comprising John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Pete Best and George Harrison, arrived at Decca’s London office for an audition. They were a day late after their road manager, Neil Aspinall, lost his way. They performed fifteen songs in just under an hour, starting with a Lennon/McCartney composition – Like Dreamers Do.

Decca eventually rejected the group, commenting: ‘The Beatles have no future in show business.’

7th: The UK was blanketed in snow, with temperatures in Oxfordshire plummeting to minus 18° centigrade.

8th: An express train heading for Amsterdam collided with a commuter train from Rotterdam in thick fog, killing 91 people.

10th: An avalanche on Mount Huascaran in Peru killed 4,000 people.

11th: The Soviet submarine B-37 was moored at Polyarny naval base, undergoing maintenance, just nine days before it was due to be sent to Cuba. At 8:20am a fire in the torpedo compartment detonated all twelve torpedoes, destroying the vessel. Captain Begeba, who was making an external inspection of the submarine at the time, survived but the rest of the crew drowned as it sank to the bottom of the Borents Sea. The blast also killed men on nearby ships and docksides; 122 people perished. The explosion hurled the submarine’s anchor over a mile.

Nelson Mandela secretly left South Africa for the first time, touring Europe for six months. On his return, the future president was arrested and charged with leaving the country illegally. He was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison.

15th: The Meteorological Office started giving the

temperature in centigrade after mentioning Fahrenheit temperatures. By October it was the other way round.

26th: The US launched Ranger 3 with the aim of sending back images of the lunar surface. Unfortunately it missed the moon by 22,000 miles and went into orbit around the sun (and you thought your satnav was bad). It did, however, provide the first measurements of interplanetary gamma-ray flux.

Three of the bestselling singles this year were:

I’ll Never Find Another You - Billy FuryThe Young Ones - Cliff RichardHappy Birthday Sweet Sixteen - Neil Sedaka

Petrol was about 23p a gallon. The average price of a house was £2,900

Patrick D Cousins is the author of Rainbows, Dreams and Angels, available from Amazon at £6.99. This a double novella with both stories set in London’s East End, mostly during the Fifties and Sixties.

Having worked and studied together over the last 10 years Ian and Ron made the decision to combine their skills and knowledge to set their own practice, providing a bespoke service to clients in commercial, residential and public sectors. Having completed work on a range of projects, from new build houses to aircraft hangars, they have the knowledge and experience to deliver projects on time and on budget.

Ian was the Project Architect for the recently completed Cults Outreach Centre, a new build project using the granite from the derelict church building it replaced, showcasing his skill for design and execution. Ron has completed many successful projects for the helicopter operators at Aberdeen airport, as well as

several residential projects - producing high quality rendered visualisations to assist in the design process.

McGregor Garrow Architects can provide the following services:

- Free initial consultation.- Feasibility Study, including measurement survey and rendered visualisations to meet the client’s brief. - Planning & Building Warrant drawings and application submissions.- Construction drawings, developing the specification, prior to issuing to Building Contractors.- Contract Administration and Site Inspections carried out to completion of the project.

Ian and Ron studied at Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and both graduated with a Masters Degree, before going on to qualify as Architects. In summer 2013, younger sister, Caroline also graduated with a Masters in

Architecture. Brother David bucked the trend by graduating with a degree in computer network management

and design and has gone on to have a successful career in I.T. Ian and Ron have always had the support of their family throughout their careers, so when it came to setting up the Practice, and to build on the legacy of their grandparents, Ian and

Ron felt strongly about including their mother’s maiden name, Garrow, in the name of the Practice.

Moving on, Ian and Ron are looking forward to developing the Practice and working with new clients on exciting and challenging projects.

Five Ways To Make Money From Your Home

By Katherine Sorrell

Please do mention the gazette when responding to advertisers - thank you 11

Forget cash in the attic – there’s money in every brick, stone or tile of your house, and even in the garden and garage.

1. Rent A RoomOne in ten homeowners now earns extra cash by letting a spare room to a lodger, according to Santander. You can also rent to commuters, Mondays to Fridays.

How much can I make?Average weekly rent is around £90, says spareroom.co.uk.

Pros - You can make up to £4,250 a year tax-free under the Government’s Rent a Room scheme. A good lodger can be a friend, share the housework and keep an eye on the

place when you’re away.

Cons - A bad lodger can be a nightmare – in your space, may not pay the rent and hard to remove. Home insurance may go up.

Need to know - Obtain references, and have a written agreement about rent, bills and how the house is shared. www.landlordzone.co.uk is a good source of information. You may need permission from your mortgage lender and, if you have one, your leaseholder. Tenants should obtain permission from the landlord.

2. Be A Host For Language StudentsMany English language schools, and some universities, need ‘host’ families for their students, to provide a bedroom and meals, and make them feel at home. It’s often just for a week or so, but sometimes longer.

How much can I make? From around £100 per student per week, before expenses.

Pros - A great way to learn about other cultures, and they’re not with you for long.

Cons - Not a reliable, year-round income.

Need to know - Tell your home contents insurer. Obtain a written contract with the language school.

3. Run A B&BWorth considering if you have a spare room or two and live in a desirable area.

How much can I make?Depends on location, number of rooms, quality of accommodation and food. About £35 per room per night is a minimum.

Pros - Meet interesting people. Open for guests when it suits you.

Cons - Early starts, lots of cooking and cleaning. Upfront costs to convert your home, plus marketing, insurance and book-keeping.

Please do mention the gazette when responding to advertisers - thank you 13

Need to know - You may need planning permission, or alterations to meet building regulations. Tell your mortgage lender. Don’t be overly optimistic: start by aiming for a 35-40% occupancy rate.

4. Rent Your Parking SpaceRent your drive or garage to a commuter people attending the theatre or a sports event. Advertise in the local paper or online.

How much can I make? You could earn £200 a month, depending on your proximity to offices, train/tube stations, stadiums and so on, and the local parking and restrictions.

Pros - Extra money for very little effort.

Cons - Getting rid of someone who stops paying but continues to park could be tricky.

Need to know - You can’t rent out a resident permit holder space, and tenants with a

parking space can’t rent it out. Draw up a simple contract, tell your home insurer, and check that the parker has insurance in case he damages your property.

5. Be A Movie LocationYour home could be a star. All sorts of properties are used, from council flats to country estates.

How much can I make? From about £500 per day for stills photography to £2,500 for a big-budget movie.

Pros - Interesting and excellent money.

Cons - Not a reliable source of income. Could be lots of disruption, and neighbours may object.

Need to know - Most demand is for large houses with good parking within the M25. Signing up with an agency is free, but you’ll pay a commission.

50YEARSEXPERIENCE

When you purchase something, whether it’s a holiday or a hat, you’re entering into a contract of exchange. This means that the seller has agreed to meet your ‘statutory rights’. If these are not met or you’re not happy with the service, you can make a complaint and ask for compensation, either in the form of money or goods.

Complain about goods and services Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979, shops must provide goods which are of satisfactory quality, as described, fit for purpose and last a reasonable length of time. They must provide services which are carried out with reasonable care and skill within a reasonable time and at a decent cost.

How to complain and make money By Jasmine Birtles, moneymagpie.com

Finance

The way to complain about sub-standard goods or services is:

Step 1: Make a complaint in person or over the phone as soon as possible. Inform them that you know your statutory rights as a consumer.

Step 2: If you don’t receive a satisfactory response, complain in writing to the head office. Ask for compensation for your time and effort (suggest an amount of money) as well as having your item mended or replaced. Send letters by recorded delivery.

Step 3: If you still aren’t satisfied, write again and be persistent. Those who write a third time usually receive at least some of what they want.

Complain about train tickets You can be compensated between half and your entire ticket price if a train is delayed for more than half an hour (depending on the cause of the delay).

How to do it:Step 1: Write to the train operator. Forms are available from the ticket office, their website or from www.traindelays.co.uk.

Step 2: Take your complaint further. If you’re unhappy with the response from National Rail, you can seek independent passenger representation from www.passengerfocus.org.uk for journeys outside of London or www.londontravelwatch.org.uk for journeys in and around London.

Claims will need to be made within 28 days and

the original ticket must be sent with your complaint. Compensation is usually paid in rail vouchers.

Complain about insurance companies and financial services If you’re unhappy about the service you have received from a financial company, it’s easier to complain than it used to be:

Step 1: Complain directly to the company in writing, explaining why you’re not happy and what you want the business to do in return. Send copies of paperwork and keep a record of your correspondence. Make sure you complain as soon as things go wrong.

They will look at your complaint and see if it’s appropriate to compensate you. However in most cases they will try and avoid this so be persistent. You might have to be patient though as a business is allowed to take up to eight weeks to reach a resolution.

Step 2: If you disagree, you can ask the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk to look at your complaint for free.

Claim back PPIMillions of people across the country have been mis-sold Payment Protection Insurance (PPI) and have claimed back thousands of pounds in compensation.

Step 1: Gather your paperwork and details and make a formal complaint to your bank or lender. You can download the forms from the Citizens Advice Bureau, www.adviceguide.org.uk.

Step 2: If the complaint isn’t resolved, you can refer it for free to the FOS via their website or by calling 0800 0234 567 (or 0300 123 9123 from a mobile).

Fun Fact: about 34m PPI policies have been sold since 2001, with almost £14bn so far set aside by the banks and building societies in compensation.

Protein Packed Greek Yoghurt Brownie Bites

Deciding to embrace healthy eating is a pretty big step – so if you’ve got that far, well done. The tricky part is figuring out what to eat. Sure, you can stock up on diet shakes and steamed veggies, but you can only go so far before the binge cravings break through! So we have a deliciously tempting recipe, packed with protein to keep you feeling fuller for longer – and bursting with chewy, chocolatey, nutty goodness. Made with Greek yoghurt, you can leave out the fat but still get a rich and beautifully textured brownie.

Ingredients:• 130g self-raising flour

• teaspoon baking powder

• teaspoon salt

• 100g dark chocolate, broken into small chunks

• 100g dates, pre-soaked, pitted and chopped

• 70g cocoa powder

• 200g Greek yoghurt (either full fat or low fat)

• 75g chopped nuts (optional)

Makes 12 - 16 brownies

1. Preheat the oven to 175°C. Line a medium sized shallow baking tray with baking paper.

2. In a large bowl, mix together all the dry ingredients until evenly blended.

3. Melt dark chocolate by placing in a glass bowl, over hot water. Stir regularly until evenly melted. It should be smooth and glossy.

4. Allow chocolate to cool slightly, and then blend in Greek yoghurt. Whip through until a light, fluffy texture is achieved.

5. Combine chocolate mixture with flour, and add dates. Mix everything together gently until even.

6. Pour into baking tray, and decorate with chopped nuts if using them. As a nut-free alternative, you can add dried fruit or chocolate chips.

7. Bake for 25-30 minutes, and check with a knife. The brownie cake should be soft and slightly sticky, but firm to the touch.

8. Allow to cool, before cutting into portions.

Detoxing & FastingThe Facts behind the FadsBy Alison Runham

January. Dark days plus lots of ‘fancy food’ and alcohol have made us feel fat and sludgy. So, bombarded with more dietary information than ever we rush out to spend our gift vouchers on books about ultimate diets and detox plans. But will they really make us healthier or slimmer?

DetoxingThere are numerous ‘detox diets’ that either tell you to restrict or eliminate certain foods, or advocate eating just one type of super food to flush you clean. But many experts say that your body already has the tools it needs to detoxify itself. The kidneys, liver, colon and skin all work together to remove unwanted substances from our body.

Much of the detox hype sounds seductively plausible. When we’re told that our bodies are full of undesirable substances that reduce our immunity, slow our metabolism and make us retain water and weight. But the British Dietetic Association has pronounced the concept ‘irrational and unscientific’.

The headaches, fatigue and other symptoms you may experience after a few days on a detox diet are not caused by toxins now released into your bloodstream. In reality, these symptoms are usually caused by your body reacting to sudden deprivation of a substance your body is a little too used to – such as caffeine, sugar or alcohol.

FastingIntentionally going without food is not new. People have been fasting for religious purposes for thousands of years and there are long held beliefs that it can improve various medical conditions and general health.

Many of the recent trendy fasting schemes don’t really ask you to fast at all, just to restrict your food intake on certain days or for a short period of time.

Does it work? You may lose a lot of weight at first, but it can be hard to maintain as you are not fundamentally changing the way you eat. There does seem to be a connection between calorie consumption and lifespan but whether fasting gives

the same results as daily moderation has yet to be proved.

However if having a couple of semi-fasting days a week doesn’t make you feel ill and you don’t compensate by eating unhealthily on the other days, there’s no harm doing it.

So what should I do?Eat a healthy and varied diet

• Choose natural foods not manufactured ones. Eat plenty of vegetables of different colours, moderate amounts of fruit and lean protein.

• Avoidsugarasitdisruptsyour natural appetite control and is known to be highly addictive. Artificial sweeteners may have no calories, but it doesn’t help you to break the habit.

Detoxing & FastingThe Facts behind the FadsBy Alison Runham

• Watchyourcarbohydrates.Potatoes, bread and cereal are pretty tasteless without added fat or sugar and that alone can cause you to take in more calories than you intended.

• Cutoutorreducealcohol. Most experts agree that a little does no harm, but stick to the unit limits of 2 per day for women and 3 per day for men.

Remember these are limits, not targets!

• Drinkwater.Hopefullyweall now know this doesn’t mean drinking 8 glasses per day, but ensure your intake is not all caffeinated (if you usually drink lots of caffeine, reduce slowly).

Lose weight safelyMost of us eat too much and there is evidence

linking over-consumption of calories with reduced life-span and premature ageing, although the mechanism isn’t clear yet. Eat healthy ‘real’ foods, eat only when you are genuinely hungry and don’t eat too much.

As I promised to start pampering myself more often I popped along to try out a new technique being offered at Kumiko. Vitalift - a non invasive face lift treatment.

It started off with a very nice face clean! (Not my usual soap and water!) Then Jenny placed little red and black electrodes on the key areas of my face. Jenny was excellent at explaining

exactly what was happening with every step of the way. We then did a test run! No, I didn’t jump off the table; it was a very gentle increase in power

to the point of almost not feeling anything at all. At any time I could ask for the pressure to be reduced or increased.

It is a little tingling feeling – I suppose a bit like a massage chair – if you’ve used one of them. Where the pressure starts off small and when it hits the right spot it intensifies. Once I got used to the lighter touch we increased the power and you could feel it a little more but it wasn’t in any way unpleasant.

I had a lovely hand and arm massage whilst the electrodes were doing their stuff which was equally as good! It was a shame when it finished as I did enjoy it. Of course I had to have a good look in the mirror when all was done. And the two lines that are quite deep on my forehead were remarkably reduced, almost invisible!

These before and after shots (a different client) clearly show the radiance in the skin and the restoration of firmness and tone, which in turn re-models the facial oval. To achieve optimum results recommended twice weekly for 5 weeks then once monthly to maintain.

10 for £495 = 9 plus 1 FREESingle treatment (60mins) £55

So if you suffer from the effects of time, sun exposure and stress or you feel your skin is dull, or your cheeks and eyelids are drooping, and a few wrinkles are appearing then this might just be the answer to your prayers!

Break Your Bad Beauty Habits

BeautyIt’s the start of another new year, which means that there has never been a better time to leave your bad beauty habits behind.

Bad Beauty Habit 1 - Sleeping with your make-up on

Never, no matter how tired you are, go to bed with any trace of make-up still on your face.

Mascara that hasn’t been removed will quickly dry-out your eyelashes, making them brittle and weak. Last night’s foundation will clog your pores, leaving you prone to nasty break-outs.

The Solution - Establish a cleansing routine

Make cleansing your face a priority. Dedicate 15 minutes in the evening to your skin: cleanse, tone, moisturise and apply your face and eye creams.

Always keep a pack of cleansing wipes next to your bed, so that if you return home after a big night out you can still attempt to remove some of your make-up.

Bad Beauty Habit 2 - Using heat stylers on your hair every day

If you straighten, curl or blow dry your hair every day you will be causing damage to your tresses that could result in split ends, dried-out lengths and dull-looking locks.

The Solution - Try something new

Try a new style - maybe sweep your hair up, or use hair accessories to attain a

different look. Find products that cater to your needs; if you want straight lengths then use a

straightening shampoo and conditioner.

You don’t have to say goodbye

to your much-loved heat styler

22 www.thegranitecitygazette.co.uk t : 01224 949085 e : [email protected]

altogether. Instead use it more sparingly and ensure that you spritz your hair with a heat protecting product first.

Bad Beauty Habit 3 - Using make-up that is past its best

Some plead ignorance, others say they can’t

let go, but whatever excuse you have for not throwing that ancient mascara away won’t cut it when you hear the truth about out-of-date make-up.

Although your cosmetics look innocent enough, after being opened they offer a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. And over time, you can end up suffering from some seriously nasty eye infections, skin irritations and blemishes.

The Solution - Regularly clear-out your make-up bag

Mascaras, liquid eyeliners and lip glosses should be thrown away every 3 or 4 months. Foundation is ok for around 12 months, as are lipsticks and eyeshadows.

Bad Beauty Habit 4 - Stuck in a make-up rut

You’ve been applying your make-up the same way for as long as you can remember. You haven’t

updated the colour of your cosmetics for many years and you’ll only ever buy certain products.

It sounds like you’re stuck in a make-up rut.

The Solution - Seek a professional opinion

The easiest way to break this bad beauty habit is to seek some professional help. Visit any of the top beauty counters in your favourite department store and ask for a make-over. Most consultants will be more than happy to help you find a new look and often this service is free.

Bad Beauty Habit 5 - Overlooking your eyebrows

Over-plucked brows are as bad as over-grown brows; many women make mistakes when it comes to one of their most important facial features.

Eyebrows serve as a frame for your eyes and creating the right shape instantly lifts your face and draws attention to your eyes.

The Solution - Pay a visit to the salon

You can’t beat professionally sculpted brows. Whether you choose to have them waxed, tweezed or plucked, your beautician will assess your needs and leave them looking perfect.

Together is Most Certainly Better

FREEDOM! This fantastic word is the cog that motors Alex Salmond’s motives for Independence however the days of William Wallace are sadly over and co-operating with the English is a necessity for growth of our country. The stability the UK provides to Scotland is crucial and to cast it aside in a moment of pride would have catastrophic consequences. We need to see past the flawed independence proposition and focus on what is best for Scotland both economically and socially. Thankfully many people my age are tuned into the bigger picture, as they recognise that the path of independence is not practical or sensible. So Salmond’s plan at getting the youth on side has so far backfired. We are too intelligent and that I think is what Salmond has ignored in his scheme for a single Scotland.

Did you know that the Great British Pound is the most successful currency in the world? I certainly did not. To hold such a great symbolic treasure yet contemplate throwing it away is absurd. If we, Scotland, chose the foolish option, we would indeed lose our economy, our currency and our path to success. We need the UK (although we might not like to admit it) to sustain our country and its excess benefit hand outs. For example; when Scotland’s banks were on their knees, guess who bailed them out with forty billion pounds… yes it was indeed the rest of the UK. ‘Why?’ you may be asking and the response is simple… because we are united. We are four countries who make one body of inspiring individuals, this we cannot throw away.

Money; money; money! This one material good is driving the population of Scotland away from Independence and with good

reason. People value their financial security. There are various financial flaws associated with independence. For example; Scotland would have to conjure up vast volumes of cash to cover the state pension single-handedly, which currently is shared out among the whole of the UK; the second flaw is that it would cost £625 million to run a brand new tax system, can you imagine the debt we would be faced? Surely you can see that it would be crazy to agree to such a preposterous proposition!

The independence referendum is the first year that 16 year olds can vote. Salmond thought this would benefit his plan but sadly instead it has hindered it. It is clear in my own school that independence is an undesirable route for our future as young people

and this is the general census throughout the city of Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Miss MacDonald (Hazlehead Academy) believes that ‘we work better when we are united with our nearest friends and neighbours as part of a bigger picture, a United Kingdom.’; Miss Forbes (Robert Gordon’s College) feels that ‘Scotland should remain part of the UK because of our unique political situation. We have a Scottish Parliament to make Scottish decisions and a voice in the UK parliament to influence decisions that affect the whole of the UK. On top of all that as part of the UK Scotland is in the EU and UN Security Council.’; and finally Mr MacDonald (Westhill Academy) believes that ‘we wouldn’t be able to sustain ourselves for very long if we went independent.’

Surely this is resounding proof that the youth of our country are determined to remain part of the UK, for the economic strength, the global platform and our own peace of mind. Vote No! (Words by TMc)
