WHS Foundation Evening of Gratitude

On April 16th, the West community came together for an “Evening of Gratitude” to celebrate the achievements made

possible by the many years of generous giving through the West High School Foundation. It was established in 1996 when

West parents, teachers, and administrators committed to raising significant money to meet the schools needs that are not

provided through government funding.

The newly renovated lecture hall was packed as past, present, and future families along with the WHS administration

and staff recognized the accomplishments. It was a such a testimony of their continued desire to invest in the education and

development of our students.

Highlights included using the lecture hall’s long-distance learning capabilities to interact with a West alum, Parks

Barroso, who is currently studying in Chile. The West High School band and choir also performed.

The Foundation has raised over 1.4 million for teacher development/awards, technology, facilities enhancement,

classroom equipment, and additional staff. To learn more, see the West High School website (westhighfoundation.org) where

you can view a video showcasing our great school.

Dear West High School families and friends,

As we come to the close of another year, I would like to stop and reflect

upon the activities of the Foundation and thank all our donors. This Fall,

we had another successful West 365 campaign that raised almost $30,000.

The Spring Soiree, a joint venture with the PTSO, raised nearly $90,000.

Lastly, we have had numerous general contributions that boosted our income to surpass all previous yearly contributions

outside of the Lecture Hall Renovation Campaign. The work of our organization has grown as the West High School

community has become more financially invested and made a commitment to continue to provide that financial bridge

for our faculty and students so they may have access to opportunities that would not exist otherwise.

Our goal at the Foundation is to efficiently meet the financial needs of the faculty

and the students. This year through many generous contributions we were able to

provide the following assistance:

• Administrative assistance of $20,000 due to a Knox County School Budget cut;

• Technology support for $20,000;

• Teacher grants for conferences & seminars for approximately $3000;

• Equipment support for approximately $14,000;

• Above and Beyond Awards for our teachers totaling $8725.

Every grant, assistance, or support the Foundation has provided has allowed West

High School to continue to flourish despite the budgetary cuts from the Knox County School System. The challenges in

education and how it is funded will continue to evolve; however, through the generous support of our donors, West High

School has had an exciting and prosperous year.

Thank you so much for your support. Have a great summer!

Carney Ivy, WHSF President

SAT/PSAT RedesignThe College Board recently announced significant changes to the SAT and PSAT, which will impact students during

the 2015--2016 school year. The redesign aims to more closely reflect what is taught in the classroom and focus on the

knowledge and skills that matter most for college and career readiness.

Eight major changes to the SAT and PSAT are:

• Relevant Words in Context- focus on relevant words, not obscure vocabulary

• Command of Evidence- students will be asked to demonstrate their ability to interpret, synthesize, and use evidence found in

a wide range of sources

• Essay Analyzing a Source- the SAT essay section will now be optional and will more closely mirror college writing assignments

• Focus on Math That Matters Most- three areas of focus will include Problem Solving and Data Analysis; the Heart of Algebra;

and Passport to Advanced Math

• Problems Grounded in Real-World Contexts- students will engage with questions grounded in the real world and directly

related to the work performed in college and career

• Analysis in Science and in History/Social Studies- students will apply reading, writing, language and math skills to solve

problems in a broad array of contexts

• Founding Documents and Great Global Conversation- every SAT will include a passage from a founding document or a text

from the ongoing global conversation about freedom, justice, and human dignity

• No Penalty for Wrong Answers- the redesigned assessments will remove the penalty for wrong answers.

Learn more about the key changes at deliveringopportunity.org/sat/redesign

West High School will administer the redesigned PSAT on Wednesday, October 14, 2015. Freshmen, sophomores, and juniors are

strongly encouraged to take the PSAT. For juniors, this is the test taken to enter the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The first administration of the redesigned SAT will be March 2016. Students taking the SAT in the fall will continue with the

current version of the SAT.

The College Board is partnering with Khan Academy to provide free,

personalized practice tests. Students will be able to link their College

Board account with Khan Academy to get a diagnostic and personalized

practice program for the SAT. Currently there is a PSAT practice test

available at collegereadiness.collegeboard.org.

DECA State AwardsThe following students won awards at the Tennessee DECA State Conference held March 4—7 in Nashville. Students with the distinction ICDC Qualifier placed in the top four among all the competitors within the student’s respective event.

Please congratulate the following students:

• Victoria Walsh - Principles of Finance

• Anna Katherine Vance - Principles of Hospitality & Tourism - ICDC Qualifier

• Isaiah Green - Buying & Merchandising Team Event

• Angel Hernandez - Business Finance - ICDC Qualifier

• Frenando Blevins - Business Finance

• Justin Stevens - Hotel & Lodging Management - ICDC Qualifier

• Ella Walsh - Marketing Management - ICDC Qualifier

• Aidan Searle - Sports & Entertainment Marketing

• Bennett Neece - Hospitality & Tourism Professional Selling

International Career Development Conference (ICDC) QualifiersPlease congratulate the following students for representing West High School at the DECA International Career and Development Conference (April 23--29), where they competed against more than 13,500 students from around the world in Orlando, Florida. West High School and Hardin Valley Academy were the only two Knox County Schools to attend this conference.

Senior Angel Hernandez was an ICDC Qualifier in Business Finance. Angel also represented West High School as the Tennessee DECA Chartered Association President while at the conference. Angel will continue his commitment as Tennessee DECA President during the next school year to develop his leadership skills and public speaking skills. Angel will be traveling to schools across the State of Tennessee and meeting with legislators on behalf of College and Career Readiness Programs.

Senior Natali Erickson has the opportunity to network with Mindy Grossman, Vice President at Nike. According to Forbes, Grossman is among the top 100 most influential women. Junior Ella Walsh was an International Finalist in Marketing Management; she placed in the top twenty in her event. The West High DECA Chapter began in November 1963, and I have taught at West High for 12 years; this is my fifth year in marketing. To my knowledge this is the first International Finalist for West High School over the past 12 years!

Freshman Anna Katherine Vance was an ICDC Qualifier in Principles of Hospitality and Tourism. Anna Katherine is already talking about next year and what she will do differently to be an International Finalist like Ella.

All four students conducted panel interviews and voted on behalf of Tennessee DECA for all the DECA International Candidates running for Executive President and Executive Southern Region Vice President.

I appreciate the financial support of the West High School Foundation and the Knox County Schools Department of College and Career Readiness to make it possible for me to attend the DECA International Career Development Conference with the students!

WHS is supported by several local businesses. Let’s support those who support West High School!

National History Day Finals

Several West High Freshman will be competing this June

in Maryland at the national level of the National History Day

Competition. They all competed and won at the regional and state

levels in order to qualify for this national recognition.

Ellery Jernigan, Isabel Mezzacappa, and Emma Stovall will be

entering their Senior Group Website on the dancer and choreographer

Martha Graham. Zoe Brookshire-Risley will be entering her Senior

Individual Documentary on the folk singer and activist Pete Seeger.

Finally, Clare Carter, Megan Tipton, and Trinity O’Neil will be

entering their Senior Group Performance on the Salem witch trials.

All these students will be continuing a strong tradition of

representing West High School at such a prestigious level. Good luck

to all of them!

Carrie Hastings

Fall Preschool OpeningsDo you have or know a child who will be age 3 (or nearly 3), 4, or 5 by October? Did you know

that West has a program called “Early Childhood Education Careers” that includes a preschool lab? For

most of the school year the students in the Early Childhood classes plan and carry out developmentally appropriate activities

with children in the lab. Usually the lab is three days per week, half-days, with a snack and lunch provided. Days and times for next year are

not determined as of yet since we are waiting on West’s full schedule for next year to be completed. The cost for the program is only $5/day.

Consistent attendance by the children is very important. If you know a child not yet in kindergarten, potty-trained, and not eligible to be

enrolled in Knox Co. Pre-K or Head Start, this might be a great option for you or someone you know. If interested in being contacted in the

Fall, send an e-mail to [email protected]. If you have any questions, feel free to call Ms. Helle at (865) 679-2564.

Renee Kesler, President of the Beck Cultural Exchange Center,

speaking about African American history in Knoxville at West’s

Black History Month event. The PTSO awarded $500 for a

grant proposal that was written about the vision for the evening.

Mr. Lumpkin married Michelle

Patterson on March 28th.
