What’s New with What’s OldAinsworth mining company

Another in a series about Kootenaiana on the online auction block.
An 1896 bond from the Kootenai Min-ing and Development Company of Ains-worth and Chicago was snapped up last month for the bargain price of $20 US.
Th e bond promised to pay Alex Larsen $10 plus 10 per cent annual interest begin-ning in 1901 and was signed by secretary J. Rogers and president S H. Wood, a Minne-apolis stock and grain broker.
Th e company was incorporated in 1893 with a capital stock of $1 million, and ac-cording to an ad that year in the St. Paul Daily Globe, the com-pany off ered “A fi rst-class ticket to Ains-worth over the Great
Northern railroad” to every purchaser of 2,500 shares, or a round-trip ticket with 5,000 shares.
At that time the company’s president was Willis Baker, its secretary J.B. McAr-thur and its treasurer Robert V. Noble.
Although the com-pany boasted of own-ing “several valuable silver claims in the rich camp near Ainsworth,” it’s not clear exactly which ones, nor how successful they were. Th e bond includes the words “Famous Blue-bell mines” on it, but this was probably just a ruse to lure inves-tors. Th e Bluebell was owned by the similar-ly named — but unaf-fi liated — Kootenay Mining and Smelting Company.
By 1900, Hender-son’s directory of BC mining companies said the company was “reported inactive.”

for $32 Cdn. And a 1930s
bird’s-eye-view of Nelson taken from the Gyro Park look-out sold for $34 Cdn. It shows in fi ne detail Hall Street and Lake Street — home to Chi-natown and the red light district — as well as the Front Street warehouse district.
Two postcards of Columbia Avenue in Rossland drew 19 bids each and sold for $27 and $31 Cdn. Th e for-mer, postmarked 1907, was taken looking east and shows a long line of false-fronted build-ings long since burned or demolished, includ-ing the Hunter Bros. Big Store, with giant letters on its roof.
Th e latter, mailed in 1914, is looking west, with the LeRoi mine visible on the hillside above.

Sculpture TalkOsamede Obazee
‘The Golfer’ (bronze)
Continuing a long tradition of crafting symbolic objects from metal as his African forbear-ers have done for hundreds of years, Osamede Obazee com-bines traditional art forms with recycled materials and, often, New World subjects. The final result is compelling contemporary sculptures in lustrous bronze and wrought iron.Last year, his sculpture ‘The Guitarist’ stood guard full of conveyed energy outside the Element nightclub. His entry this year portrays a different individual pursuit, again dis-played in bronze. ‘The Golfer’ is fresh from a year at Sioux Falls’ SculptureWalk and shows the immense talent of Obazee just as ‘The Guitarist’ did in 2011.Sculpted at the point of follow through, “The Golfer’ looks skyward from under the bill of his cap as his eyes follow the flight of a well struck ball, club draped behind him display-ing a proper finishing stance. Spaces and flourishes in the figure lend the piece a bit of abstraction while staying true to form.“I like to sculpt figures engaged in activities that allow lots of expressiveness,” says the San Francisco, California-based sculptor. “Whether the work is abstract in nature or highly realistic, metal or wood, I like to incorporate elements and styles passed on by my Benin Edo tribal ancestors into fin-
ished pieces that are modern in feel.”Obazee’s body of work is im-pressive in its variety and mediums: ‘Embrace’ and ‘Ju-bilation’ are ceramic and wood abstractions respectively, ‘The Golfer’ and ‘Guitarist’ realistic figurative metals while ‘Mask and ‘Warrior’ adhere towards traditional African sculpture forms.Then there are his ornamen-tal gates. Fusing functionality, traditional imagery and struc-tured symmetrical patterns together with flair and stylistic flourish , he produces wrought iron beauty with a purpose.“Certainly I feel the gates I make are works of art. There is no doubt about that in my mind,” says Obazee. “Yes, they serve a purpose - but to me that is secondary to the imag-ery and patterns of them.” His majestic gates reside on two
continents – that of his birth and his current residence. Si-multaneously, his status as one of the foremost practitioners of contemporary African-influenced sculpture means his work is found world-wide, and in high demand.‘The Golfer’ presents just one of Obazee’s many styles. Like all his sculptures, it injects in-fluences from the past with his vision of progressive modern art. The result is sculpting that is undeniably distinctive and always lovely to admire.

Castlegar Sculpturewalk is now accepting applicants from sculptors to take part in our 2013 event. Now in its third success-ful year, Sculpturewalk is a year-long outdoor exhibit of original sculpture by local and international artists. The sculptures are owned by the artists and loaned to the exhibit, where they are available for purchase, lease, and are open for public vot-ing. The winner of the coveted People’s Choice Award will be purchased by The City of Castlegar for permanent display, in addition to a cash prize of $3000. Sculptures will also be judged and awarded on Artistic Merit, with prizes in that category totaling $5000.
The application deadline is October 31, 2012.

Proposed electoral boundaries met with opposition

About a dozen peo-ple had the chance to talk about the pro-posed federal electoral map changes to three federal commissioners at a forum in Castlegar Wednesday night.
Th e proposed chang-es would see Princ-eton and Hedley join Central Okanagan-Coquihalla and Pentic-ton join with Castlegar and Trail in the South Okanagan-West Koote-
nay Boundary. In addi-tion, Nelson, Montrose, Fruitvale and Salmo would join with Cran-brook and Fernie in the Kootenay-Columbia Boundary.
“An overwhelm-ing majority of people there did not agree with the changes,” said Southern Interio MP Alex Atamenenko.
“It’s the fact that it’s ludicrous to take Nel-son and separate it from Trail and Castlegar.”

CommunityFruitvale purchases land for burial spaces

Th e issue of a short-age of burial space in the Fruitvale Memo-rial Cemetery can fi -nally be put to bed.
Th e Village of
Fruitvale council se-cured cemetery ser-vices for the region for the next 25 years with the announce-ment the Village has purchased a neigh-bouring strip of land.
Th e 20-foot, by
317-foot plot will be enough for the vil-lage to fulfi ll burial requirements for over 25 years, said village chief administrative offi cer Lila Cresswell.
“Based on the sales we’ve had in the last
fi ve years, that will do us for quite a while,” she said. “Th at’s why we didn’t need a huge amount of space.”
Th e Village sold its last plot in April. Th e cost for the new piece of land was not avail-able.
Th e village gets around fi ve requests for full burial plots per year, and now they can accommo-date around 80 to 150 more plots with the new addition, located between Pine and Tamarack streets.
“About 85 per of people go for crema-tion. But there are still some that go for full burial and that’s why we don’t have any spots left ,” Cress-well explained.
However, Cress-well said there are
still places for cre-mated remains in the original cemetery, as well as columbarium spots.
Village councillor Larry Gray said now the site needs fenc-ing, to be cleared of brush and trees, it has to be surveyed and laid out.
Th e cemetery is the place of choice for the Beaver Valley, in-cluding Fruitvale and Montrose.

SportsGrand Forks man conquers Ultra Beast challenge
Almost 50 kilometres long with over 80 challenging obstacles, Grand Forks’ Frank Phipps re-cently completed the Spartan Ultra Beast 2012 Finisher in Killington, Vt. in 14th place.

Of the 366 athletes who participated in the Ultra Beast, 156 managed to fi nish the course. Athletes have to complete courses by a certain cutoff time over the 14 hours allotted in the race.
“It was defi nitely a challenge,” Phipps said. “Th is was the world championship of obstacle racing in
the Beast and Ultra Beast races, with the Ultra Beast being the fi rst of its kind. It was through invitation and acceptance only.”
Phipps, who works with the Canada Bor-der Services Patrol at the Cascade entry point near Christina Lake, placed 14th overall, and second in his age category (he is 42), with a fi nal time of eight hours, 56 minutes and 23 seconds.
Th is is Phipps’ sixth Spartan Race, though he has competed in many other races and competitions, such as the World Police and Fire Games.
Th e Spartan Race has become a popu-lar race over the past several years as it involves running a regular race and completing obstacles along the way in a boot camp fashion.
“Th ere are usually three diff erent types
of Spartan Races with those being a sprint (fi ve kilometres), Super (15-plus kilo-metres), and a Beast (21-plus kilometres) and I had competed in all the diff erent ones so far this year,” he explained. “My goal was to get Top 50, as I had no idea what to expect due to the course and dis-tance.”
Phipps noted that Spartan Races off er an additional chal-
lenge that a regular race doesn’t have.
“It’s a great chal-lenge and something everyone should try,”
he concluded, adding his mother would be attempting the fi ve-kilometre race in Vancouver next year
in May. His next challenge
will occur in Novem-ber in Sacramento, Calif.

CommunityBags of Love help Trail children in transition
For the fi rst time, Bags of Love are be-ing lovingly assembled in Trail for children in transition who have had their lives up-rooted by extenuating circumstances, and are in need of a little com-fort.
Th ey are colour-ful, hand-sewn, grab bags of every essential a young person could want—from toys to toiletries, a handmade
comforter to stuff ed animals.
Under the Bags of Love program, run out of the Trail Seventh Day Adventist Church, the fi rst 10 bags will be given out to foster chil-dren in the West Koo-tenay area next week.
“Children in transi-tion are oft en not able to take personal be-longings with them,” said Sharon Jackson, the coordinator for the Trail-based program. “But Bags of Love helps ease the transition by providing items of comfort that they can call their very own.”
Started in 2005 in Kentucky, It’s My Very Own/Bags of Love now has chapters all over the U.S., with Trail being one of three in Western Canada.
Th e Trail chapter is relatively new, said Jackson, and has only been in existence since June, 2012. Already, handmade bags have been created, sewn by two church members and one community member, and an as-sortment of items have fi lled their interiors.
As well, the group has received some love from the Trail Shop-pers Drug Mart with donations of personal care items, and the
Sugar Shack Quilting with donations of ma-terial and handles for bags.
Th e contents of the bags are very basic, but special, Jackson noted: a kid-sized handmade comforter, a soft cud-dly toy, personal care items (comb, hair-brush, toothbrush, toothpaste), two toys for young children and age appropriate items for older children.
“It warms the heart to see a smile on a child’s face when they are given something they can call their very own,” Jackson ex-plained.
Plus the bags that are collected in the area are distributed and stay in the West Kootenay, helping lo-cal children from new-born to age 18.
Th e toys and the personal care items collected are for all age groups—the travel size is best. As well, the program is looking for volunteers to help with fundraising and to sew bags and quilts.

Amy Bohigian of Watershed Produc-tions will be instruct-ing the program, employing the knowl-edge and expertise gained from her es-tablished youth fi lm camps in Nelson.
“Amy is amazing,” said KAST’s program coordinator Erin Handy. “She’s an ex-perienced documen-tary fi lmmaker and has a master’s in Edu-cation to boot.”
Th e program is ex-pected to run in Trail (Oct.16-17), Rossland (Oct. 9-10), Castlegar and Crawford Bay over the next several weeks.

Nelson to host top retail coach
Barbara Crowhurst will be speaking at the Prestige Lakeside in Nelson on Oct. 29.
Business coach and retail specialist Bar-bara Crowhurst will be speaking in Nelson about the strategies that drive retail sales.
Crowhurst will be speaking at the Pres-tige Lakeside Resort from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 29.
Crowhurst, known as North America’s #1 retail business coach, has been in the re-tail game for over 25 years working with key retailers. She has aff ected thousands of retail businesses through her innova-tive retail makeover seminars.

Nelson pair to launch hiking website and appNelson will be the
test market for a new hiking website and mobile app that could eventually be used
worldwide.Local soft ware de-
velopers at Th e Seed Network will start
building the app later this month and are looking for sugges-tions on what features
to included with it.“We want to know
what people want, and we’ll fi gure out
how to do it,” ex-plained project man-ager Mark Dennis.
Dennis and his business partner Bradley Roulston have put the ques-tion out to Face-book. Th rough their new “Hiking Nelson” group page, they are encouraging fans to post their suggestions on their wall, and will be handing out cou-pons for a free coff ee to the fi rst 200 people who post their idea.
“We want to har-ness the creative spir-it of Nelson,” Dennis said. “Th ere’s a lot of outdoor enthusi-asts here. Th ey’re the ones who know what would make their hiking experience better.”
So far, suggestions include GPS trail mapping and digi-tal makers for points of interest, as well information about the plants, trees and wildlife that hikers are likely to see on the trail.
“We don’t want people to feel limited in what they ask for,” Dennis said. “Th ere’s really no limit to what we could do with
this.”In the coming
weeks, as they move into the development phase, they expect to have a team of at least 20 people working on the app, to have it ready to launch in Nelson early next year.
If it’s a success here, it will be scaled up for progressively larger markets.
“With all new tech-nology, it’s easier to launch it in a limited area fi rst, and work out the kinks before putting it out to a larger market,” Den-nis explained.
Roulston hopes Th e Seed will continue to attract new soft ware projects to be devel-oped in the area.
“We’re trying to bring a new industry to Nelson and em-ploy local people,” he said. “Soft ware development can be done anywhere, and we think, why not do it here where people want to live?”

Th e four piece jazzy old time band ‘Maria in the Shower’ returns to Rossland on Satur-day, Oct. 13 to boogie down in the Rossland Miners’ Hall.
Maria in the Shower is a uniquely entertain-ing band at the leading edge of Canada’s new folk sound. Th eir mu-sical approach is a sim-ple but potent alchemy, marrying traditional folk and jazz with lyr-ics that explore funda-mental human ques-tions, delivering it with
pure fun and energy. Simultaneously hu-
morous and ap o c a lyp-tic, human and oth-er worldly, these four young men have the en-ter taining power of a traveling circus with musical depth to back it up.
Th is fast-rising quartet has performed more than 300 times
since 2009, with over 30 festival appearances
including the Kaslo Jazz Fest and the Van-couver Jazz Festival.
