Greg Nesteroff collectionThis postcard of the Ymir hospital is one of three known close-ups of the building, designed by Alex Ewart in 1902 and opened the
following year.
First of three parts
The Ymir hospi-tal was one of the most pictur-esque buildings of its kind and
era. One of several cottage hospitals in West Kootenay, where patients convalesced in a home-like setting, it admi-rably served the community at a time when local mines were dangerous and injuries frequent.
Despite its peaceful ap-pearance, it was at the centre of controversy when a local newspaper that investigated its operation found itself the target of a union boycott and was forced out of business.
The date of both the hospi-tal’s construction and demise have often been misstated, and until recently its architect had been forgotten. Much remains
unknown about its operation, but in this series we’ll present the most detailed history of the building to date.
•Ymir actually had two hos-
pitals. We don’t know where the first one stood or what it looked like, but Dr. Herman Keller apparently operated it for three or four years around the turn of the 20th century. It had four beds.
Then the Nelson Daily Miner of May 30, 1901 an-nounced: “Ymir is shortly to have a new cottage hos-pital, which will probably be built about the beginning of July. The Nelson and Fort Sheppard Railway company, through the vice president, Mr. F.W. Bobbett, have do-nated two lots for the purpose, and the government grant for the building will be available in July. Mrs. Fahey, the pres-ent matron, leaves shortly and will be replaced by Miss Macdonald, of the Kootenay
Lake General Hospital.”The government grant
didn’t come through, however.In October 1902, Spencer
Sanderson and Mitchell Tait lobbied MLA John Houston for funding for a hospital to be operated by the Ymir Miners’ Union. They’d raised $3,000 but it wasn’t enough.
A month later, perhaps with Houston’s tacit support, the union pushed ahead. The Vancouver Daily World of Nov. 27, 1902 reported: “Work has started on the Ymir Miners’ Union hospital. Judging from the plans which were drawn by Mr. Ewart of Nelson, the building will be as pretty and complete a cottage hospital as seen in the Kootenays.”
(Alexander Charles Ewart was then a partner in the Nelson firm of Ewart and Carrie. His other works, either solo or with Carrie, included Kaslo city hall, the Ymir public school, and many key buildings in Nelson such
as the Hume Hotel, Tremont Hotel, KWC block, and land registry office.)
Over the winter of 1902-03, the situation became dire when the roof of the old hos-pital collapsed under heavy snow. Details of the incident are unknown, but patients and nurses moved to an old build-ing at the south end of town.
In June 1903, the govern-ment provided $2,000 and work on the new hospital at the town’s north end began in earnest, if it hadn’t al-ready. John Burns and Sons, a prominent Nelson firm, was the contractor.
A detailed list of expendi-tures showed the final con-struction bill was just under $7,000 (about $186,000 today). In addition to the pro-vincial grant, the union came up with about $2,100 and citi-zens contributed another $380 — leaving a deficit of $2,500, although it’s not known how this was paid off. One line
item among the expenditures read “1902 Hospital, $1,500” suggesting the old hospital was either demolished or renovated.
The few surviving close-up photos of the new hospi-tal show it was three storeys with twin turrets and balco-nies, surrounded by a picket fence. It was easily the classi-est building in Ymir. Heritage consultant Bob Inwood says the building exhibited some marked influence from the Beaux Arts Classical Revival style that was popular at the time.
“The bi symmetry of the dual towers and frontal eleva-tion are typical of this later return to a more subdued ap-proach to the plan and deco-ration of structures in the latter part of the (so-called) Victorian period,” he says. “The somewhat Byzantine shape to the turret roofs was also popular in this period. The rather simple surface de-
tailing/finishes allude to the shingle style of the Craftsman movement that was develop-ing concurrently with the Beaux Arts style — it was es-pecially well suited for more rural institutions.
“The Ymir hospital pres-ents an interesting adaptation of the staid Neo-Classical to a rustic setting. These were all contemporary design ele-ments that would have been well known to Ewart.”
The hospital formally opened on Nov. 23, 1903 with a reception and dance. There were 15 beds and four private wards, one furnished by the St. Andrew’s Society and another by the Ymir Ladies Guild. The first physician in charge was Dr. G. Edward Duncan.
Health care in Ymir ap-peared to have taken a giant step forward. But within months, serious questions would be raised about the hospital’s operation.

Local Chinese heritage sites recognizedNELSON — Two Chinese heritage sites in Nelson
are among 21 in BC receiving formal recognition under the Heritage Conservation Act.
Nelson’s old Chinatown district, bounded by Vernon, Front, Ward, and Hall streets, was recognized along with the former Sing Chong laundry, now the home of Kootenay Co-op Radio.
According to the citation: “These places have value for commemorating the significant contribution of Chinese Canadians to the early development of Nelson. Captured in famous literary writings such as Fred Wah’s Diamond Grill, the small Chinese Canadian
cafés and other businesses of Nelson are an example of other such places in small towns throughout British Columbia.”
They will be added to the BC Register of Historic Places. Inclusion is purely commemorative and doesn’t confer any form of legal protection.
Other sites nominated were the former Chinese gar-dens and Chinese Masonic Hall in Rossland and Rock Creek, where Chinese placer miners once worked.
The project is one of the legacies stemming from the provincial government’s 2014 apology for historical wrongs against Chinese Canadians.

Canadian literary icon Lawrence Hill returnsCASTLEGAR —
Canadian literary icon Lawrence Hill is return-ing to the West Kootenay-Boundary this spring to speak on his latest timely and acclaimed novel The Illegal, a fictional narra-tive inspired by the plight of real refugees.
In recent conversa-tion with the CBC Hill, known best for his epic novel The Book of Negroes — said he wanted to write about the struggles of displaced people long before the recent head-lines. While visiting his sister in West Berlin in the 1980s, he became in-terested in the Sudanese expats and refugees that she was spending time with.
“They couldn’t really get their lives going le-gally once they arrived in West Berlin, so watching how they had to struggle and innovate — and be creative to stay alive and help each other — got me thinking about is-sues of statelessness,” he said. “I’ve been dream-
ing about writing a novel about it ever since.”
Hill’s first lecture will take place in Wednesday, April 20 at 7 p.m. in Grand Forks at the USCC Community Centre (6140 Community Centre Road). Tickets for the Grand Forks event will be available at Selkirk College, Grand Forks Campus (recom-mended) or at the door.
Hill will also speak in Nelson on Friday, April 22 at 7 p.m. at Mary Hall on the Selkirk College Tenth Street Campus. Tickets for the Nelson event can be purchased at Selkirk College Bookstore, Castlegar Campus or by calling 250-365-1281. They can also be purchased at Otter Books in Nelson (cash or cheque only) or at the door. Ticket cost is $10 and will be on sale as of March 1.
In addition, ten local fiction writers will have a chance to take their craft to the next level by working in a small group
setting with Hill. In this master level class entitled “The Art and Business of Creative Writing Fiction: a Master Class with Lawrence Hill,” writers will also learn some of the finer points of the business of writ-ing in order to make their splash in the publishing world.
This world-class workshop will take place at the Selkirk College Mir Centre for Peace on the Castlegar Campus on April 23 and 24 and is free for selected writers residing within the West Kootenay-Boundary re-gion. To apply, writers must submit a 10-15 page manuscript of fic-tion to Almeda Glenn Miller at [email protected] no later than March
1. Initial submissions will be juried by Selkirk College creative writ-ing instructors and then short-listed submissions will be juried by Hill. Ten students will be se-lected and all candidates will be notified by early April as to whether their submissions are success-ful. Proof of residency is required.
For general informa-tion, please go to selkirk.ca or contact Selkirk College Continuing Education Coordinator Cara-Lee Malange at 250-365-1261 or at [email protected]. For specific information about the Grand Forks lecture, please contact Jennifer Wetmore at 250-442-2704 or [email protected].
Canadian author Lawrence Hill visited Nelson in November, 2014 for a Mir Centre for Peace Lecture at Mary Hall on the Tenth Street Campus. Hill is returning to the West Kootenay-Boundary this spring for a pair of lectures and a special workshop for writers.
ROSSLAND — There was a packed house for Yukon Blonde at the Flying Steamshovel on Wednesday, Feb. 10.
The Vancouver-based
band stopped in Rossland on their cross-Canada tour of On Blonde, a re-cord they released in June of last year.
Yukon Blonde last
played a show in Rossland shortly after that, on their way to a music festival in July.
“We didn’t want to fly to the festival so we de-
cided to drive, and then we were like, ‘Well, there’s a bunch of towns in BC that we haven’t played in a long time or that we haven’t played before,
and like people have been trying to get us to play there,’ so we were like, ‘Why not give it a shot?’” explained Jeff Innes, lead singer. “Rossland came
up and we were like, ‘Where’s Rossland?’ We didn’t even really know where it was, and then we were like, ‘Yeah, sure let’s go play there,’ and we came and played and we had like the best time.”
When there turned out to be gap in their tour schedule between Victoria and Calgary, the band decided they wanted to come back to Rossland.
Rosslanders were happy to see the band again, flooding the dance floor and busting out their best dance moves.
“It was amazing; it was great; it was wonderful,” said Innes.
He hopes Yukon Blonde will be back in Rossland again someday.
“I love it here. I actu-ally want to spend some time out here,” said Innes. “I actually just found my perfect out of the city vibe; I moved to one of the Gulf Islands, which is really nice, but I feel like I need to complete it by — like when I’m done with the Gulf Islands — I need to go to a mountain … town. I really like the people here.”

Local connection to Oscar frontrunner, The RevenantTRAIL – Montrose native Charlie O’Shea is part
of a sound mixing trio up for an Academy Award. The Vancouver-based crew includes Salt Spring
Island’s Chris Duesterdiek, the production sound mixer, and Candice Todesco, a sound assistant O’Shea has worked alongside since teaming up in the science fiction disaster film, 2012.
On Feb. 28, the long time boom operator will find out if he can add Academy Award winner to his list of achievements following six arduous months shooting The Revenant — Leo DiCaprio’s adventure thriller that leads the pack with 12 Oscar nominations.
After 30 years of building his resume as a boom operator on movie and television sets, the 1981 J.L.Crowe grad, says from the onset, the sound team had an inkling The Revenant could produce the chance of a lifetime.
“All the stars aligned and we got on the right
movie with the opportunity,” O’Shea told the Trail Times. “Everybody knew there was an opportunity for an Oscar with DiCaprio in the film and all the hubbub around it.”
O’Shea knew if he could stick out the demand-ing project, the chance of being nominated for the hottest movie of the year was high, and worth every minute of 14-hour days standing in snow and freezing water to catch the perfect sound.
Long days in the remote Canadian wilderness (The Revenant was mainly shot outside of Calgary and in Squamish) and the unconventional manner of shooting presented some unique challenges for the boom operator.
“We had minus-30 days and a lot of us had to be in hip waders for all those scenes that were shot in the water,” he said, mentioning long johns and down-filled jackets were a necessity.
“We would get there in the morning and re-
hearse until the light was right for the director of photography, which was in the evening before the sun went down.”
After hours of practising with stand-ins each day, the final scenes were shot in a tight time frame.
“When the director came to set we only had a certain amount of time, which was really stressful,” explained O’Shea. “For the crew to get everything the way he (Alejandro González Iñárritu, director) wanted it, we had maybe two hours.
“A lot of work went into how to coordinate all the movement.”
As award season nears and The Revenant buzz continues to rise, O’Shea has already moved on to his next venture.
He’s back on set in Vancouver, working on the third installment of the Planet of the Apes movie series.

New proposed fees at Selkirk spark outrageCASTLEGAR — The student union is
protesting proposed new mandatory fees at Selkirk College.
On Tuesday, Feb. 23 the board of gov-ernors will meet to discuss the proposed new fees for the 2016-2017 academic year, and whether or not to adopt them, and can expect students and representatives of the student union to be there, protesting what they say is a violation of the Ministry of Advanced Education’s Tuition Limit Policy.
The policy set the annual cap at two per cent for tuition and mandatory fees in the 2015-2016 school year, based on the rate of inflation. The cap is expected to be set at a similar percentage this year. The increases proposed by Selkirk would raise both the
tuition and existing fees by the maximum allowed amount, but would also introduce new mandatory fees, for an additional in-crease of 4.5 per cent.
“We find it very unreasonable that stu-dents are asked to pay for this, especially when they’re going around the govern-ment cap on tuition increase,” said Shane Feddersen, external director of the Selkirk College Students’ Union.
But while the increase is more than two per cent, it is not a breach of the ministry’s
policy.“Institutions may introduce new manda-
tory fees for new services if there is a clear benefit to students,” said Andrew Wilkinson, minister of advanced education, as part of a statement to Castlegar News.
Selkirk says the new fees are to help pay for student services.
“We are suggesting to the board that we implement a student services fee to support the transitions to employment and student wellness initiatives,” explained Neil Coburn, vice-president of Selkirk College.
Coburn and the student union invite students to attend the board of governors meeting in the Castlegar staff lounge at 5:15 p.m. on Feb. 23.

One hundred thirty-third in an alphabetical series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names
Last week we saw that Nelson was known to First Nations as kaia’mElEp or k’iya’mlu and to early prospectors as Toad Mountain.
By 1888, the area around the Silver King mine was better known as Hall’s Camp while two names were pro-posed for the infant town on Kootenay Lake: Salisbury, after Robert Arthur Talbot Gasconye-Cecil, 3rd Marquess of Salisbury (1830-1903), then the British prime minister; and Stanley, after Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby (1841-1908), then governor general of Canada — and namesake of Stanley Park and the Stanley Cup.
Stanley was actually what’s now downtown Nelson while Salisbury was the Fairview neigh-borhood, but this dis-tinction probably wasn’t clear to those not on the ground. (Salisbury/Fairview also had two other names that we’ll deal with later in this series.)
According to Nelson: A Proposal for Urban Heritage Conservation, mining recorder Henry Anderson “proposed to purchase a block of prop-erty associated with the eastern low water land-ing. He decided this site might prove to be a good location for a settle-ment. Since the name of a recording location was needed on mining forms, Anderson elected to call his ‘settlement’ Salisbury.
This location was entered on all of Anderson’s gov-ernment documents and would later confuse his-torians commenting on Nelson’s first name.”
The earliest mention of both Hall’s Camp and Salisbury was in the Victoria Daily Colonist of July 20, 1888: “In a let-ter to a friend in this city Mr. R.B. Atkins … writes under date of July 11th from Salisbury Landing, Kootenay, whither he and his companion, Mr. E. Ramsay, of Helena, went to take a look at the Toad Mountain mines … [T]hey hired three horses, two to ride and one to pack, and proceeded on their way to Hall’s Camp, Toad Mountain.”
In the following months, several more references to Salisbury appeared in the Colonist and the Donald Truth, whose proprietor, John Houston, became Nelson’s founding mayor. There were hardly any mentions of Stanley, al-though a letter survives, mailed from Spokane in October 1888 to “Elmer E. Alexander, Stanley, BC, c/o Kootenai, Idaho.”
A letter from an anon-ymous correspondent published in the Truth on Oct. 27, 1888 also said: “The miners think that Mr. Anderson, the recorder, should have his headquarters in Stanley, and not out in the bush a mile distant.”Historian Tom Collins wrote in the Nelson Tribune of Sept. 25, 1897 that Gilbert Malcolm Sproat, the gold commissioner, picked the name Stanley, and that he feuded with Anderson over it.
“When Sproat got down here he did not pull very well with Anderson, and he commenced to undo what the recorder had done before his ar-rival,” Collins wrote. “Among other things, he decided to rename the place, calling it Stanley. Both men were bull-headed and for a time the town was officially designated as Salisbury by the mining recorder and Stanley by the gold commissioner.”
But in The Tribune of Oct. 9, 1897, Sproat de-nied this.
“[The] story of a con-flict upon names down
here between me and the recorder is mythical. I cannot imagine how a difference of opinion be-tween the magistrate of a district and a recorder could have anything to do with the history of Nelson … As a fact, no such difference was known to me.” Sproat said he and Anderson were friends and during their brief time together in Nelson, “I only saw him on three occasions and never had an un-pleasant word with him.”
In any event, we can pinpoint when the town was renamed Nelson: on Oct. 12, 1888, the Colonist carried an ad for an “Important sale of town lots at Stanley, Kootenay Lake, BC.” The next day the ad appeared again — but Nelson had replaced Stanley.
Why the change? According to Sproat, “I believe that the first in-tention was to give the name of the governor-general, Stanley, to the town, but as there was a Stanley post office in the Cariboo, the name of lieutenant-governor Nelson was selected. I
remember that on hear-ing this I immediately wrote to Mr. Nelson about buying lots at the coming sale, but he did not ‘catch on.’”
(The Stanley in the Cariboo, west of Barkerville, was founded in the 1860s and named after Edward Henry Stanley, older brother of Frederick Arthur Stanley. Today it’s a ghost town.)
Sproat added: “Ever since I was thrashed at school for misspell-ing Constantinople, I have been fond of short words. Most of my own towns, you may observe, have two syllable names.” Stanley and Nelson both met that criterion, al-though Sproat didn’t actually take credit for them. He did, however, acknowledge choosing the first street names — Baker, Vernon, Ward, and Josephine. Another street was later named Stanley.
The Colonist of Oct. 19, 1888 announced: “Two stores have been erected at Salisbury Landing, which the provincial government have now laid out into a townsite, calling the new place ‘Nelson’ in honor of our much respected lieutenant-governor.”
The next day the Donald Truth reported, not quite accurately, that “Owing to the fact that a hamlet in another part of the province is named Salisbury, the name of the Toad Mountain Salisbury has been changed. It is to be called Nelson here-after.”
It’s sometimes claimed Stanley became Nelson
when a post office ap-plication was filed, but the earliest correspon-dence on the subject from November 1888
only mentions Nelson. The post office opened Aug. 1, 1889.

ROADRUNNERS PLACE 2ND IN BC SPECIAL OLYMPICSThe Trail Roadrunners floor hockey team, made up of players from Trail and Castlegar, placed second in the Special Olympics BC floor hockey tournament held in Abbotsford in January.
Alumni gather to celebrate proud past of Selkirk College Saints hockey program
CASTLEGAR – The Selkirk College Saints reflected on the past as the team pushed to-wards a future fourth straight British Columbia Intercollegiate Hockey League (BCIHL) title Feb. 5-7 at the Castlegar & District Recreation Complex.
The fourth annual alumni weekend took place with more than 20 former players coming together to check out the cur-rent team in action and resume bonds at a number of special events. The current edition of the Saints scored a win for the program’s pioneers on Friday night with a 2-1 victory over the
University of Victoria Vikes.“I’m impressed with the
athletic, social and caring per-sonalities that are displayed by the Saints players,” said Larry Keraiff, who played for the Selkirk College team between 1972 and 1975. “I am so very proud to be a Saints alumnus because of the way they are conducting themselves in all the facets that go into being a Saint.”
In the Friday night contest, Saints alumni gathered at centre ice for a pre-game ceremony and official puck drop. The former players then made their way to the stands where they watched
this year’s team engage in a tight checking battle with the Vikes that featured solid goaltending from Selkirk College starter Brett Huber.
After a scoreless first period, Dallas Calvin gave the home side a 1-0 lead seven minutes into the middle frame. Early in the third period, Ryan Edwards increased the lead to 2-0. Vikes forward Bo Sigurdson finally solved Huber with just under two minutes re-maining in the game to boost excitement, but the Saints held on for the 2-1 win.
Other highlights of the week-end included some of the alumni
visiting the dressing room to de-liver a pre-game speech and the first ever four-on-four tourna-ment that saw past players join current players in a fun Saturday of hockey at the old Pioneer Arena in Castlegar.
“It is such a pleasure to come back and reminisce about the wonderful experience we had as Saints in the 1970s,” said Barry Watson, who played for the col-lege in the 1972-1973 season. “To be able to share those mem-ories with the current Saints and see how the program has grown, it was just an awesome weekend.”
The Selkirk College Saints welcomed back former players for the fourth annual alumni weekend Feb. 5-7. Prior to the Friday night game against the University of Victoria Vikes at the Castlegar & District Recreation Complex, former captain and three-time BCIHL league cham-pion Logan Proulx dropped the puck.

Here come the robots!CASTLEGAR — RoboGames spon-
sors gathered in Castlegar in advance of the 4th Annual RoboGames, taking place on Saturday, February 20 at Selkirk College’s 10th Street Campus in Nelson. A Kootenay Association for Science and Technology/GLOWS/Nelson Tech Club initiative, RoboGames has dou-bled in size over last year’s event with 40 plus teams made up of over 70 students from Nelson, Castlegar, Rossland, Trail, Krestova and New Denver.
Participants compete in a number of robot challenges including robot soc-cer, an obstacle course, a special trick competition and robot battles. With hands-on robotics training provided by Nelson Tech Club’s President, Brad Pommen, students and adult mentors took part in eight weeks of robotics design, programming and circuit train-ing to build their robots.

tion is available at www.heartsrest.com/conver-gence/convergence-writ-ers-retreat; to register via email: convergence@
heartsrest.comThe theme of this
year’s weekend, “The Spirit in the Landscape,” looks at the deep con-
nection with nature that many Kootenay residents report experiencing. Butala, from Calgary, is best known for her memoir The Perfection of the Morning about her time on a ranch in south-ern Saskatchewan. Her most recent novel is Wild Rose (2015). Chamberlin, from Halfmoon Bay, B.C., has been on fac-ulty at the University of Toronto since 1970. His books include If This Is Your Land, Where Are Your Stories?: Finding Common Ground (2003), which explores how sto-ries and songs locate peo-ple in a landscape, and A Covenant in Wonder with the World: The Power of Stories and Songs (2012).
B u t a l a a n d Chamberlin will speak Friday night, May 13, followed by a Q & A. Their talk is open to the public for a $5 admission, as well as to conference registrants. On Saturday, May 14, Butala will con-duct a three-hour writers’ workshop in the morn-ing, and Chamberlin will conduct a similar work-shop in the afternoon. A Saturday evening panel discussion will feature the two guest authors plus New Denverites Therese DesCamp, a United Church Minister and co-founder of the Heart’s Rest Retreat Centre and the Slocan Lake Stewardship Society, and Sean Arthur Joyce, a journalist, poet and social histo-rian, whose most recent books include Laying the Children’s Ghosts to Rest: Canada’s Home Children in the West (2014).
Previous Convergence Writers’ Weekends were held in New Denver in 2012 and 2013.

Selkirk College embarks on mission to raise $50,000 in student financial aidNELSON – Selkirk College offi-
cially kicked off its 50th Anniversary celebration at the 2016 Bursary Tea in Nelson with sights set on help-ing students achieve success into the next half century.
The annual Bursary Tea took place at the end of January and brought to-gether students, donors and staff for an afternoon of acknowledging the importance of working together to build a strong foundation of learn-ing. As part of marking the college’s 50 years of post-secondary education in the West Kootenay-Boundary, the 50th Anniversary Legacy Fund was launched with a goal of raising $50,000 in the coming months for scholarships and bursaries.
“This fundraising effort will provide vital financial aid for fu-ture generations of students as we move into our next 50 years,” says Selkirk College Donor Relations Coordinator Joleen Kinakin. “We hope the community will get behind this effort to leave an important gift behind for the students to enrich their lives through education at Selkirk College.”
Seed funding of $10,000 was pro-
vided to the fund with money that was raised at the Selkirk College Gala 2015 that was held in November.
At the Bursary Tea at Mary Hall on the Tenth Street Campus, more than 250 students, donors and staff came out to enjoy the afternoon that featured food prepared by the Professional Cook Program students and served by the Resort & Hotel Management Program students. More than $138,000 in bursaries was given out to students who qualify for financial support based on need.
The Reason for GivingEach year, a student speaks on
behalf of their fellow bursary win-ners. This year, Associate of Science Program student Nicole Laface pro-vided an emotional address where she thanked donors for helping make the journey through her education easier.
The 30-year-old is a single mother of two young children and returned to college in September to pursue a degree in the Selkirk College Nursing Program.
“I decided that I wasn’t able to afford my children on my own, so
I decided to go back to school to get more skills,” says Laface, who is currently taking her first and fourth year options in preparation for start-ing the four-year Nursing Program.
Prior to returning school, Laface was a unit clerk at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail where she worked for 10 years.
“It’s a huge step and very nerve wracking. It took so much struc-ture out of my life, I literally had an emotional breakdown wondering if I was doing the right thing,” she says. “I gave up everything and have no security, but I’ve found it so chal-lenging and enlightening. It will be beneficial when I’m done.”
Laface grew up in Trail and grad-uated from J.L. Crowe Secondary. When she was 18, she enrolled in the Selkirk College Hairdressing Program and shortly after that decid-ed to take the Unit Clerk Program. At the Bursary Tea, Laface received a number of bursaries for her cur-rent pursuit.
“It’s very emotional for me to get these bursaries,” she says. “I never imagined a school could be so car-ing to their students, it’s like a loving family. When they tell you that there are these donors that want to help through your life in school… it’s so touching. I want to be able to do that for somebody else when I am
done my career, to donate money or anything to just let somebody else know they are appreciated and that they are capable. The support is overwhelming.”
An Important Element of Post-Secondary
Laface is just one of 126 students who received financial assistance through a bursary during this school year. The goal is to ease the stress and burden so students can concentrate on their education and training.
“We are very fortunate to have so many individuals, businesses and organizations who contribute to our bursaries and scholarships,” says Kinakin. “We believe the students who receive these awards will pay it forward through the contributions they will make to their own com-munities once they get the education and skills they need to succeed.”
If you are interested in making a contribution to the Selkirk College 50th Anniversary Legacy Fund or have any questions about scholar-ships and bursaries please contact Joleen Kinakin at 250.365.1360 or [email protected].
Selkirk College kicked off its 50th Anniversary celebrations at the 2016 Bursary Tea at Nelson’s Mary Hall on the Tenth Street Campus. Over the next 14 months, the college will be marking five decades of learning in the communities throughout the West Kootenay-Boundary. Students, donors and staff were brought together to launch the 50th which includes raising money for the Selkirk College 50th Anniversary Legacy Fund.
