Whirlwind of funTaking a spin on the Sizzler was a thrill for these two youngsters at last year’s West St. Paul Days. Discussion question: are they just close friends or is this an effect of centrifugal force?

The 24th annual Celebrate West St. Paul Days, this year themed “Paradise in West St. Paul,” is sure to bring a little slice of heaven to the city from May 14 to 18.

The family-friendly festival is also widely known for being the unofficial kick-off to summer fair season in the metro.

“Our event pretty much starts out all the small cities’ events,” says Dave Wenda, president of Celebrate West St. Paul, the group of volunteers that puts on the event every year.

Whether it’s much-loved traditions, such as the Grand Parade or Royalty coronation, or completely new events, such as West St. Paul sings, first-time visitors and perennial button-buyers alike will find something to put a spring in their step.

A community get-together

Celebrate West St. Paul Days is

more than a good time, it’s also an opportunity to bring the city together.

“You get to meet your neighbor (and) find out how nice they really are,” Wenda says, adding that it’s a great chance to get out and enjoy the city “especially after such a long win-ter.”

The event brings traffic to local businesses, attention to local gov-ernment and awareness to the com-munity as a whole. This year’s event also marks the 125th anniversary of the birth of the city of West St. Paul. With all of the spectacular events the city and community volunteers have planned, the city is sure to have the celebration it deserves!

So, whether you’re just now crawl-ing out of winter hibernation or already skipping with summer spirit, come on out to Celebrate West St. Paul Days and find the paradise you’ve

been waiting for.

Happy Birthday,

West St. Paul! What better way to kick it all off

than by commemorating the city’s 125-year history?

The City Hall lobby will be trans-formed into a living past from 5 to 7 p.m. on May 14, with historical pho-tos, creative displays and information from the inception of West St. Paul all the way to the present day. There will even be a history quiz with two win-ners of $125.

The mayor will be on-hand with information on city projects; the police and fire departments will present wit-ness demonstrations.

Hot dogs, mini-donuts and root beer floats, as well as a photo booth, games, drawings and prizes are sure to make the night a hit for everyone. A

bouncy house and a slide for kids will round out the party.

For more information, visit www.cityofwsp.org. Visit the City of West St. Paul Facebook page before the event to get a leg up on the history quiz.

No luck at Midway games? No problem! Claim your prize this year at the citywide garage sale from May 14 to 18. Score everything from clothes, tools, toys, furniture and more. Look for the yards sporting Celebrate West St. Paul Days garage sale signs. For more information, contact John Kelly at The Pizza Shop at 612-718-8000.

Kickin’ it old schoolOn Thursday, May 15, stop by The

Pizza Shop on Dodd Road from 5 to 9 p.m. for classic cars and classic eats. The shop’s known for its Hot Rod Thursdays, but this Thursday it’s going old-school by busting out the Model Ts. Even if cars aren’t your thing, you’ll still enjoy munching on pizza and chit-chatting with neighbors at this great blast-from-the-past event.

On Friday, May 16, put on your dancing shoes, grab a partner (or a group of BFFs) and head over to Cherokee Tavern from 7 to 11 p.m, for some dancing in the streets! Even people with two left feet will do more than tap their toes when Minneapolis dance band High Brow and the Shades hits the stage with their high-energy, hip-shaking jams. The cover’s $10 or $5 with a West St. Paul Days button.

Get up, get out, get fi t!You’ll want a good night’s sleep on

Friday, because Saturday is the big-gest, busiest and brand-newest day at the festival.

Start the day off with the annual one-day softball tournament at the West St. Paul Sports Complex, start-ing at 8 a.m. For more information, contact Bob Creamer at 651-270-3391.

If the tourney (or fair food) inspires you to get fit yourself, then stroll down to the Family, Fitness and Food Fair at Moreland Elementary from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Watch your kids march in the Kiddie Parade, enjoy food and games and a special performance by the Teddy Bear Band at 10 a.m.

Party along the

parade routeIf there’s one thing you can’t miss

this weekend, it’s the West St. Paul Grand Parade, the Twin Cities’ first parade of the summer season!

The parade starts at 1 p.m. The new route this year goes down Butler Avenue West and Charlton Avenue, then swings down Smith Avenue to Annapolis Street West before coming to its grand conclusion at Charlton Avenue.

This year’s grand marshal is Ed Iago, a longtime West St. Paul coun-cil member. “He’s done so much with being involved with different groups,” Wenda says.

“It is indeed an honor to be

selected as a grand marshal,” Iago says, especially in West St. Paul 125th year.

New twists on

family favoritesAfter the parade, join city council

members at Dodge Nature Center Preschool for the city birthday party. Cake’ll be served at about 3 p.m. The popular “Rock the Barn” and Farm Festival run from 3 to 8 p.m. Wagon rides, pony rides, butter-making, barn tours, a bake sale and live music make this a can’t-miss event for all.

The festival fun continues on Saturday night with an all-new event: “West St. Paul Sings.” Join your friends, neighbors and commu-nity members at 7 p.m. at St. Croix Lutheran High School auditorium for a singing competition sponsored by the West St. Paul Optimist Club, fea-turing the best amateur singers ages 15 to 25 who live, work or attend school in town.

The grand fi naleStart the last day of the festival

off right with the Kiwanis Breakfast and Silent Auction. The Kiwanis’ll be cooking up sausage, pouring cof-fee and juice, and, of course, flipping flapjacks. Breakfast starts at 7 a.m. at the West St. Paul YMCA, but never fear, night-owls: food’ll be served until 1 p.m., so go ahead and sleep in.

After breakfast, head over to St. Croix Lutheran High School at 1 p.m. to crown the 2014 West St. Paul Royal Ambassadors: Miss West St. Paul, Junior Miss West St. Paul and Little Miss West St. Paul. Admission to the coronation is free with a West St. Paul Days button.

The coronation marks the official conclusion to West St. Paul Days, though there’s still time to seek out a few last thrill rides and deep-fried food before the sun sets on the week-end’s activities.
