As I write this letter, the new school year is just begin-ning. Although I have been at Reserve in many roles,including as a student, it is particularly rewarding

and exciting to begin this school year in my new role as head-master. Having experienced the Reserve community frommany perspectives, I look forward to the challenges and op-portunities now afforded me as the head of school.

Through various publications and gatherings, you willlearn about our activities at Reserve. Beyond the usual stu-dent activities, we are also initiating a strategic planningprocess that will conclude in June 2009. As I assume leader-ship of Reserve and the strategic planning process, the Boardof Trustees and I have identified four areas in which to directour efforts:

� Elevate the academic rigor of the Academy� Instill within the school community the spirit of a

social mission� Maintain the (Midwestern) values that have been the

foundation of the school� Provide the financial and human resources to

accomplish the strategy

These four areas, and theStrategic Plan, will direct theReserve community and meas we move forward.

The Corinne Van Dame Davis Endowed Schol-arship Fund has been established by family, for-mer students, and friends to celebrate Mrs.Davis’s life and her devotion to the school sheloved. This fund was originally established in 2007through a bequest from Sylvia Metcalf Lissa.Married to alumnus Harry Metcalf, class of1902, Sylvia was extremely fond of Western Re-serve Academy and was the primary benefactorwho made the Metcalf Center possible. She wasdescribed as one who found ways to improvethe life of others as a social worker and philan-thropist. She was a fine lady who loved golf,bridge, swimming and music. She died in2006. This fund provides scholarship supportto a qualified applicant with financial need.

Endowment Report

We are pleased to report that WRA’s endowmentperformed well during the 2007-08 fiscal year.In the fiscal year ending June 30, 2008, ourinvestment return brought the endowment to$118.2 million before distributions. Takinginto account the $4.5 million, or $280,000per student, distributed to fund operations forthe year, the endowment stood at $113.7 mil-lion on June 30, 2008.

Investment returns continued to outperformour peers in 2007-08. For the year endingJune 30, 2008, WRA ranked in the top 1 per-cent of more than 300 endowments as meas-ured by Cambridge Associates. Amongendowments under $300 million, WRA rankedfirst out of more than 200 similarly sizedfunds. More importantly, over a three-year pe-riod, the endowment measured in the top 3percent of all endowments measured by Cam-bridge Associates. The returns over the pastone and three years were 5.6 percent and 13percent respectively.

The Investment Committee of the Board ofTrustees continues the process of diversifyingand optimizing the asset allocation and man-ager lineup to moderate the risk while seekingsolid returns in these uncertain times. TheTrustees have underweighted global and do-mestic equities in the endowment and over-weighted marketable alternatives and defensiveinvestments tactically. At fiscal year end, theasset allocations were as follows:

Financial aid, without a doubt, has always been a passion for both Brittand Skip; nothing could be more fitting than to create an endowed scholarship fund in their name. Supporting theFlanagan Scholarship Fund provides a meaningful opportunity for the Reserve family both to honor the Flanagansand to strengthen the school’s commitment to scholarship aid for future generations of students.

To establish the Flanagan Scholarships, Reserve created an endowed fund totaling $5,885,036 to providefull scholarships to eight students. Each year, the Flanagan Scholars will be carefully selected from among well-qualified and talented applicants whose families could not otherwise afford the cost of a Reserve education. Byproviding financial assistance to outstanding students, the Flanagan name will live on in perpetuity at Reserve andserve as a testament to academic excellence.

Why I Give ...

“At age 75 it is fairly simple to think back and evaluate and rank the chaptersof my life. I say chapters, not events. The four years at the Academy add up tothe No. 1 period for me. It was during that time I acquired the essential ele-ments for a successful life – mental development, physical competition with itsjoys and disappointments, correct behavior patterns, social interaction, cre-ativity and spirituality. Obviously, these disciplines can be fashioned individu-ally elsewhere. But the Academy, for me, provided the one place, the oneenvironment to put it all together – and – at the right age. My complaints andwhines at the time are swept away by my adoration of the place.

“I would want to help any qualified candidate who needs assistance to enterand experience Reserve and glean what I did. It took no prodding for me tojoin the Reserve Heritage Society and see to it that some of my estate heads tothe Academy. To those who feel as I do, I urge them, with large or small means,to give back to where so much good happened in so short a time.”

“Be the change you wish to see in the world.” Never have words strucksuch a chord. As I reflect on this phrase I realize that sincethis is precisely what we find ourselves preaching to our kids,I wonder if we, too, ask it of ourselves. I think we’ve alllearned that “do as I say, not as I do” just doesn’t work. So,what better way to “be the change” than to lead by example?

What better way to evoke change than to be part of it.With one foot planted firmly in our long history, the PioneerWoman of Reserve constantly commit ourselves to pioneeringpositive change at every level. That change comes in manyforms. It often reflects our changing times and the new needsof our school and our students. We are here to support WRAin meeting those changing needs, such as our recent additionof a community service committee. This group is in place toserve as a communication conduit between the school andoutside organizations that enable our students to promotesocial responsibility, and to support our community bothclose by and farther afield.

Another example is the role our Spirit Committee plays.This active committee works in conjunction with the Green

Key and its spirit leaders. They also work with the AthleticDirector to facilitate events that ignite school spirit, and co-ordinates team moms making sure team feeds are enjoyed byall.

The addition of our Parent Dialogues, started a year ago,provides our community with another positive change – aunique forum for parents, faculty, WRA administration and,sometimes, outside speakers to openly discuss current andrelevant issues concerning our school and our students.

Our board of 35 vibrant and energetic women, alongwith countless volunteers, worked hard this year to achieveour goals, while staying true to our mission statement. Thesewomen are in place to supplement and enrich the student lifeat Western Reserve Academy. The new year and new era willbring many changes to WRA. I am proud to say the PioneerWomen will be entrenched in that change and here to sup-port the Reserve community for years to come.

Pioneer Women of Reserve

The Western Reserve Academy Dads Club is a non-profitstudent-parent organization that raises funds to supportWestern Reserve Academy student organizations, pro-grams and activities. This mission has remained un-changed since the club’s inception in 1938. The DadsClub allocates funds for academic programs, guest speak-ers, fine arts, entertainment, clubs, events, athletics andmany campus organizations. The unique aspect of ourorganization’s mission is that it supports the many diverseactivities of the whole student body.

The Dads Club celebrated its 70th Anniversary withanother great year. Our club has great, hard-working execu-tive board members and excellent Reserve community par-ticipation in our fundraising and student support efforts.

The major Dads Club accomplishments this pastschool year were the funding of the Visual Arts/DigitalMedia Center, Knight Fine Arts Center lighting andsound system improvements, and Live Music Club in-struments. We continued our ongoing support of student

organizations such as BUFO, the Western Reserve Acad-emy Chapter for the Junior State of America, and theGreen Key Society. Our academic projects includedchemistry and physics/astronomy classroom equipmentpurchases. Allocations included funds for Bicknell Bo-nanza, Prom, Senior Skip Day and other social activities.

The Dads Club executive board regularly discussedReserve’s new social mission and community serviceproject during the past school year. The dads have offeredto sponsor a budget for Reserve’s REACH student com-munity service organization in the new school year. Thisfunding will enable the group to travel off-campus forcommunity service work.

The dads encourage all parents, friends and Reservecommunity members to participate in our Dads Clubfundraising and student support activities.
