WELCOME TO THE 34th ANNUAL WESTERN STATES CONFERENCE OF DENTAL LABORATORIES

The combined committee members under the chairmanship of Steve Simon, CDT, are veryexcited about the meeting that has been planned for you. We proudly present another finearray of seminars and exhibits to technicians in the eleven Western states and beyond.Last year, the meeting hosted technicians from 18 states! The meeting is both educationaland informative. Conference participants have opportunities to attend business and tech-nical clinics and to earn CDT continuing education credits. The “hot” topics, techniques andproducts featured on this program are sure to peak the interest of all technicians regard-less of your position or experience level in the laboratory.

We encourage you to register early as some class sizes are limited. We know that as tech-nicians, we spend a lot of time at the bench. Periodically we need a break from the dailyroutine to network, discuss common interests and problems, and just relax and have somefun. The Welcome Reception/Social Hour on Friday evening offers an additional hour fornetworking and socializing. The Argen Corporation is graciously co-sponsoring this event. At this reception a drawing will made for a winner to play WSC BIG CHANCE and Newthis year an additional WSC BIG CHANCE just for the exhibitors.

As always, many exhibitors will offer TRADE SHOW SPECIALS to those attending themeetings. Labs often save enough money through the show specials to pay for their regis-tration and to save even further we offer a discount for attendees coming from the samelaboratory. The committee extends a thank you to the speakers and the exhibit companies-we couldn’t do it without you! Please be sure to visit each booth in the exhibit hall to seethe new products they are offering.

For our dentists....

We invite you to attend all the excellent classes that are available. Learn time saving tipsand communication skills necessary for quality networking with the dental laboratorywhich in turn may enhance your practice. The exhibit floor offers new products anddemonstrations about products you currently use.

F310:00 am - 12:00 pm“Technical And Business FactorsWhich Make Your Lab MoreSuccessful And Profitable WithImplant-Supported OverdentureCases.”Dr. Hamid Shafie

Total edentulism has been noted in 5%of adults who are in the 40-44 year oldage group. This percentage graduallyincreases to almost 42% in seniors. However, these percentages aredeceiving because the baby boomergeneration is greater than people in theover 65 year old age group. We willsee significant increases in the numberof fully edentulous patients by the timethe baby boomers reach ages 65 andhigher.

Because of the above fact, all of theimplant companies have focused theirresearch and development efforts overthe past five years, in creating differentimplant-supported overdentures solu-tions for fully edentulous patients.

Education Objectives:a) Give a guideline for indications and contraindications for the implant supported overdentureb) Biomechanical analysis of implant-supported overdenturesc) Give an attachment selection guidelined) Describe various occlusal schemes including Lingualized occlusion

S62:30 pm - 4:30 pm“Removable Prosthetics:Establishing a Higher Value”Tom Zaleske

Establishing a value in the services adenture laboratory provides in the 21stcentury must be more than a “sameday” turn around or “free” resets. Inorder to compete and thrive in today’sdenture specialty, laboratories need toestablish their value with discriminatingselection of materials used in fabrica-tion, sound techniques that fully utilizethe material properties, and the uniquemanipulation of standard materials toprovide natural esthetics, better com-fort and function of the final dentalprosthesis..

Objectives:* Explain/teach how to carve naturalcontours using Kopps esthetic guide-lines and how to colorize those den-tures base contours by using a unique“wet” technique instead of powder

buildups or composite overlays.* Explore several properties of denture base acrylics and how to maxi-mize their efforts.

* How to “shape” modify and set denture teeth to eliminate the “off thecard” look.* Base contours and their relation-ship to comfort, fit, and case suc-cess.* Identify common faults in denture construction generated both clinicallyand in the laboratory and sugges-tions to correct them.* Factors associated with complaint in complete denture patients. How incorrect vertical dimension effects facial esthetics.* The differences in soft liners, and intheir use and abuse.

In addition to the lecture, all attendeeswill receive a CD ROM disk containingprintable articles and supportiveresearch on topics discussed in lec-ture.

Thomas Zaleske has 20 years ofrelated experience, in which nine ofthose were as an ‘in house’ technicianin a prosthodontic practice. He current-ly owns and operates his own laborato-ry. Tom has participated in 2 day clini-cal courses involving the evaluation, set up, process and delivery to thepatient with Swiss Master Dental tech-nician Jurg Stuck. These coursesinvolve limited (12) participants observ-ing a DDS and Mr. Stuck treating thepatient in a team approach clinically, over a two day period, as well as fol-lowing Mr. Stuck through his advanceddenture fabrication techniques. Hewas fortunate enough to have partici-pated in this course 3 times over a 4year period.

S72:30 pm - 4:30 pm“Esthetic Milled Restorations:Machine & Materials”Dr. Russell GiordanoThe interest in fabricating restorationsusing milling systems continues togrow throughout the world. Milledrestorative systems may decrease the

time required to fabricate estheticrestorations. The background ofCAD/CAM systems is presented aswell as an overview of the major sys-tems available or planned for the mar-ket place such as Cerec inLab, DCS,Kavo, Lava, Cercon and other in devel-opment. Principles of the CAD/CAMtechnique are reviewed and advan-tages and disadvantages of the varioussystems are presented. Although themachining system is important in thisscheme; the milled materials them-selves may also ultimately determinethe success or failure of the concept.

The composition, properties, and prod-uct of these materials serves as abackground for the discussion of howthese materials fit into the spectrum ofesthetic restorative dentistry.Laboratory and clinical research isused to document the success of thetechnique for use as inlays, onlays, crowns and bridges. The use of newfine particle/wear kind veneering mate-rials with specific milled frameworkmaterials will also be discussed.

Dr. Russell Giordano is an AssistantProfessor and Director of Biomaterialsin the Department of RestorativeDentistry/Biomaterials at the BostonUniversity Goldman School of DentalMedicine. Dr. Giordano received spe-cialty training in prosthodontics atHarvard School of Dental Medicine andperformed research at the CeramicsProcessing Research Laboratory at theMassachusetts Institute of Technologyleading to a D.M.Sc. degree in 1991and a Certificate in Prosthodontics.
