90 YEARS OF SERVICE
T he 90th year of our Y was one full of signature achievements. Just three months after
the Westport Weston Family Y’s downtown home was nearly closed for good by Super
Storm Sandy, we broke ground in February 2013, on our modern new Y at our 32-acre
Mahackeno campus.
The start of construction on the first stage of our new home, a full-service, family-oriented
54,000 sq. ft. facility, was followed by other milestones: The topping out of the steel girders that
form the handsome, Adirondack-style structure, in July; the enclosure of the building in October.
With the building safe and secure, the scores of skilled local workers managed by Turner
Construction were able to remain on schedule, and budget, through a long, cold, snowy winter.
As we were busy Building What Matters out at Mahackeno, in September we celebrated our
90th Anniversary with a festive block party on Church Lane. This historic occasion was made
more memorable by a special announcement that day: Our new facility will be forever known as
the Bedford Family Center, in honor of the continuing support of our Y and its mission by the
descendants of founder Edward T. Bedford.
A year of remarkable “Firsts” (and 90th’s!) is now being followed by a year of “Lasts” — chief
among them our last Annual Meeting on June 16 in our beloved old Bedford Building before we
move early this fall to our new Y. But as we say goodbye to our home for the past 90 years, we
will be bringing with us our shared mission of service to our members and the entire community,
and our commitment to the four core values that have long guided us: Caring, Honesty, Respect
and Responsibility.
Here’s to the next 90 years! Thank you for being a part of our Y family and for helping us achieve
our dream of a new Y. We hope to see you there this fall — at last!
Bonnie Strittmatter Pete Wolgast
President, Board of Directors Chairman, Board of Trustees
Great progress in Building What Matters over the past year, as we prepare to move into our new home in September.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT Nurturing the potential of every child and teen
With nearly 40 percent of all local grade-school students active in Y programs and
activities, our Y serves thousands of children of all abilities each year.
In addition to an array of youth classes offered as part of our four seasonal sessions, our
Y also provides year-round opportunities for young Y members to pursue their passions
and develop skills through our competitive Dance, Gymnastics and Swimming programs.
Led by talented and dedicated coaches and instructors, and backed by amazingly
supportive groups of parent volunteers, these Y teams are where life-long friendships are
formed, goals set and dreams realized. We’re proud of each and every one of them, from
the Ladybug dancers of our Kinder Company, to our high-flying Competitive Gymnasts,
to the 200-member strong Water Rat Swim Team.
To help us better serve the needs of all local families, in the fall of 2013 our Y hosted a
series of discussions with parents of children with special needs. The results of these
talks have led to several new classes and activities designed especially for these special
Y families, including a Kidz in Motion dance class, Yoga for Kids with Special Needs
and Special Needs Arts & Crafts, with more such classes in the works.
Y SHOWTIME GYMNASTICS TEAM TO PERFORM IN NATION’S 4TH OF JULY PARADE
As if Gymnastics Director Sally Silverstein didn’t have enough on her plate this summer! Just
weeks after opening our new Y Gymnastics Center in Norwalk, Sally will be heading
down to Washington, DC, with our Advanced Showtime Team, which will march in America’s
Independence Day Parade. As only one group from each state is given the opportunity to perform
in the nation’s keynote parade, it’s quite an honor for Sally and her girls!
Water Rat Jonathan Blansfield will
swim for Northwestern this fall.
Cute as a bug: Dancers in the Y’s Creative Movement Class
wear their costumes for the annual Spring Performance.
HEALTHY LIVING Helping every member achieve their wellness goals
As one of our Membership Coordinators at the front desk, Midge Deverin hears about
members’ personal lives, their struggles and their accomplishments, like Jennifer Bridwell’s
inspirational Y story.
Jen joined our Y in July 2013. Several months earlier, she gave up soda for Lent, particularly
Coca-Cola, which was like an addiction for her. Jen weighed 320 lbs. The elimination of soda
from Jen’s diet led to the beginning of eating healthier and in smaller portions.
Although Jen joined a local gym, our Family Y became her primary fitness center. “I swim
laps three to four times a week, and I’ve taken Aqua Fit classes taught by Patty and
Debbie,” Jen told Midge this past January. “In addition, I had a fantastic personal training
session with Sharon and really liked her Cardio Combo class. And three months ago I
started the Insanity class taught by Perry and Lisa. WOW!”
Wow! is right: Jen lost 145 lbs in less than a year. She now weighs 175 lbs, and went from a
size 32W to a size 12. “I do not have a weight or size goal, just fitness goals,” Jen says. “I
recently ran one mile for the first time in my life, so my next goal is to run a 5K and then do
a Sprint Triathlon.”
Whatever your goals are, Midge promises our Y will be right there in helping you to achieve
them.
A trainer of champion Pugs, Jen embarked on her fitness regimen after realizing she
couldn’t keep up with her show dogs during Agility training.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Giving back and providing support to our neighbors
Children enrolled in the Family Y’s Kinderkids After School Program take part in
enrichment programs throughout the school year. Last fall’s learning opportunities featured
a special “Season of Giving” project that paid off in every way.
Of course, the idea of “giving” generally means having something to give, so our Kinderkids
first got a fun and engaging lesson about the concept of saving. Led by teacher
Miss Nancy Elyze Brier, the children made a special visit to the TD Bank in Westport.
“Nancy and I constantly reflect on the importance of teaching gratitude and creating a sense
of responsibility with young children,” says Tasha Dennison, director of the Y’s Child Care
and After School programs. “Savings accounts are big with Nancy, and having the kids visit a
real bank was not only fun but really helped them build on the concept of earning and saving
in a tangible, hand’s-on way.”
The “earning” part of this project was a group and family effort, with the children
accomplishing tasks at home for small amounts – 50 cents a task.
With their piggy banks growing fatter by the day the children then had to decide: Do they
spend the money to buy things for themselves? Or, this being the “season of giving,”
suggested Miss Nancy, should they think of ways to help those in our community who may
not be as fortunate as we are?
We’re pleased to report that our Kinderkids all wanted their newfound wealth — $600 in
all — to go to a deserving cause, which the kids decided would be the Meals on Wheels
programs in Westport and Norwalk.
Y Kinderkids celebrated their “Season of Giving” by giving a donation to Meals on Wheels
Coordinator Lynn Westfield of the Norwalk Senior Center.

Gala Opening Celebration We’re Building What Matters, and on October 11,
we’ll be Celebrating What Matters!
WE INVITE YOU TO JOIN US FOR A SPECIAL EVENING IN OUR NEW Y ON SATURDAY, OCT. 11
There is still much work (and excitement) in the months ahead as the Family Y completes the task
of Building What Matters – our modern new facility at the Y’s 32-acre Mahackeno campus. The
good news is that we remain on schedule for our opening early this fall, likely in September. And
with the complex task of building and outfitting our fully equipped, 54,000 sq. ft. facility now
nearly complete, we’re able to set our sights on Celebrating What Matters. On Saturday,
October 11, Y staff and volunteers will host a Gala Celebration, in our spacious new Gymnasium.
We invite Y members and supporters to join us for this memorable, historic occasion. Tickets are
available beginning at $250 a seat, along with a variety of table sponsorship opportunities, each
with special benefits ranging from special recognition at the Gala to chauffeur service to and
from the celebration.
“Our Gala promises to be a moment where we reflect on what we’ve accomplished and all that
our new Y will allow us to do for the next 90 years,” says Rob Reeves, Family Y CEO. “It’s an
evening to express our gratitude to the philanthropic leaders who have inspired us, and a night
to celebrate our continuing cause of strengthening our community. After so many years of hard
work, it will be quite a party!”
For further information or to book your seat or table, please contact Susie Haydon at
203-226-8981, or [email protected].

THANK YOU, Y VOLUNTEERS!
In 2013, hundreds of Family Y volunteers contributed
more than 8,000 volunteer hours of service. Their
help allows our Y to continue to fulfill its mission to
develop our youth, promote healthy living and foster
social responsibility throughout the communities we
have served for the past 90 years.
IN MEMORIAM: Y LEADERS WE WILL MISS
Our Family Y recently suffered the loss of two of our most prominent and admired benefactors.
On May 1, former Y President, Trustee Emeritus and “Mr. Westport” Allen A. Raymond passed away at the age of 91. His contributions to our Y and the community we serve are legendary.
On May 10, Lucie C. McKinney, the great grand-daughter of Y founder Edward T. Bedford, died at the age of 80. She continued her family’s tradition of generous support to our Y and other note-worthy philanthropic causes. God bless you both!

2013 Annual Campaign We Can Do So Much More Because Of You
The Family Y’s Annual Campaign helps us fulfill our mission to develop youth, promote healthy
living and foster a sense of social responsibility throughout our community. As a charitable,
nonprofit organization, our Family Y endeavors to serve all, regardless of financial capacity or
physical capability.
The 2013 Strong Kids Campaign generated $212,000 in charitable support from Y Members,
staff and other families, businesses and foundations in our community.
These contributions and additional indirect financial aid from the Family Y allowed us to
provide a total of $429,900 in financial aid last year to hundreds of deserving local families
and individuals of all ages, giving them the opportunity to participate in a multitude of
wellness and athletic programs, access to quality child care and the chance to be part of an
organization that adheres to the core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
In 2013, our Y helped strengthen our community by providing:
$112,000 for families who need scholarship help to attend Camp,
receive Child Care, take swim lessons or be part of our
Sports & Recreation programs and activities;
$116,000 in subsidized or free Family Y Memberships.
A NEW, NATIONAL PLATFORM TO ENHANCE HOW WE TELL OUR STORY OF IMPACT
Though this was the last year our annual fundraising effort will be known as the Strong Kids
Campaign, our shared mission to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities will
continue – and expand in significant ways.
In January 2014, Y-USA launched a multi-year, Movement-wide effort to generate more resources
to support our cause. The Nationwide Campaign will include Movement-wide fundraising and
capacity-building executed largely through regional collaborations and supported by multi-faceted
engagement activities, including public relations, digital marketing, advertising and online giving.
For the first time, supporters can donate to our local Y through the Y’s national website at
ymca.net/give.
