Every year the Arp family tradition was to make it across the border and celebrate with the 800 people who lived in Inwood and celebrate the 4th of July. A street parade in the morning, which led to a nice picnic lunch in the park, a dip in the town pool in the afternoon, which would lead into Crash Up Derby (i.e., Demolition Derby) in the evening, with a giant fireworks display to cap the day off. To a family with five kids that looked forward to this 4th of July tradition year after year, what happened in 1982? The town ditched the Crash Up Derby and sub’d for it a Donkey Softball game. That’s right, folks, a “hit the ball, jump on the donkey and ride the bases” softball game. My day was ruined, the Arp tradition changed and a family wondered, “Will we go back next year?” Ultimately, the Arp family was fine, Inwood reinstated Crash Up Derby and no one ever uttered the words Donkey Softball ever again. The rest of my childhood was set! Speaking of tradition, let’s start a new one! We are excited to announce our Summer Event Series. Belmont Village is kicking off this inaugural series with French Bastille Day on July 14th. Our wonderful French Chef, Dominique Raynal, has a fabulous dining treat for you. Save the date for this one; everyone is bound to be talking about it for weeks! The August event we will be celebrating is our (annual) Anniversary Party. Belmont Village, Westwood, has been around for 6 years on July 25th, but August 23rd is the date we are celebrating. Be sure to invite family and friends (RSVP is recommended) and enjoy a fantastic afternoon gala! The final Summer Event Series will be our 2nd Annual Dancing Under the Stars. Last year we had the UCLA Dance Troupe here and celebrated a night of dancing under the stars. This year will be bigger with even more dancing! Stay tuned for this September Event. Whichever event you attend this summer, make it a crash up year; it’s the best kind. I’ll see you out there. ~ James

DRCS Health Hintsby Zara Khatchatrian

How Can Older AdultsPrevent Falls?

Many people who fall, even ifthey are not injured, develop afear of falling. This fear may causethem to limit their activities, which leads to reduced mobilityand loss of physical fitness, and inturn increases their actual riskof falling.

Older adults can stayindependent and reduce theirchances of falling. They can:

1.) Exercise regularly. It isimportant that the exercises focuson increasing leg strength andimproving balance, and that theyget more challenging over time.Tai Chi programs are especiallygood.

2.) Ask their doctor orpharmacist to review theirmedicines—both prescription andover-the counter—to identifymedicines that may cause sideeffects or interactions such asdizziness or drowsiness.

3.) Have their eyes checked byan eye doctor at least once a year

and update their eyeglasses tomaximize their vision. Considergetting a pair with single visiondistance lenses for some activitiessuch as walking outside.

4.) Make their homes safer byreducing tripping hazards such asrugs, adding grab bars inside andoutside the tub or shower andnext to the toilet, and improvingthe lighting in their homes.

To lower their hip fracture risk, older adults can:

• Get adequate calcium andvitamin D—from foodand/or from supplements.

• Do weight bearing exercise.• Get screened and, if needed,

treated for osteoporosis.Source: CDC website
