Wetherby Preparatory
School – Clubs Programme
Summer Term 2018
Wetherby Preparatory School - Clubs Programme
Summer Term 2018
Dear Parents,
We are proud of our clubs provision here at Wetherby Prep and also very appreciative of your
enthusiastic support towards the programme. I am pleased to enclose details of the clubs on offer
for Summer Term 2018. Contained within this booklet are:
‘Clubs Programme – Summer Term 2018’, which outlines the full programme of clubs
for next term.
‘Information on new clubs or club changes’, giving you more detailed information on
many of the clubs, including those which are new to the programme.
‘Form for completion – Summer Term 2018’, on which you as parents should mark
your son’s clubs choices (please include a second choice for Friday clubs).
Some new clubs for Summer Term 2018 include:
Architecture - Drawing
D & T @ 5-6pm
Detectives
Forensics
Harry Potter
Indoor Football
Jigsaw Puzzles
Origami
Reasoning
Table Tennis now for Yr 3-5
(Monday) and Yr 6-8 (Tuesday)
Tennis
Please be careful of the clubs you choose on your son’s Games day, as boys may have a fixture
during their afternoon Games session which can run over. This can result in boys returning back to
school later than scheduled and do not always arrive back in time to start a 4pm club.
For your information, potential fixture days for your son for this term could be as follows:
Monday - Years 6
Tuesday - Years 3 & 4
Wednesday - Years 7 & 8
Thursday - Year 5
Unfortunately, we cannot offer a refund if some sessions are missed due to fixtures – it is only
possible to receive a refund for a club that is cancelled by Wetherby Prep.
I hope that all boys will find something they enjoy, particularly for their Friday afternoon activity.
Please note that Friday afternoon clubs are compulsory for all boys.
Please complete and return the ‘Form for completion’, to me by email
[email protected] or boys can give a hard copy to Miss Fekete or Miss Ogden at
reception.
The deadline for the return of completed forms is Friday 16th March
Boys will find out which clubs they have been allocated at the end of the Spring Term and their
allocations will be written in their homework diaries during form time.
Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding the clubs programme.
Kind regards,
Miss Katie Clifford
Assistant Head Pastoral

Clubs Programme Information:
Advanced Artists (invitation only - Friday)
This club is for boys in Year 7 whose attitude to Art has been outstanding during lessons over the past couple of years. They have been selected if they have shown great promise in the subject and would benefit from some additional tuition. The boys will develop a small portfolio of work and also begin building up pages of their own Art sketchbook.
Airfix Club
If you fancy the opportunity to build scale models of aircraft, tanks, ships and cars, etc. then Airfix Club may be
for you. There are, of course, other model kits available (Revel, for example) which you can buy in toy shops
and some department stores. You can begin with a simple model such as a Spitfire and work up to a diorama
scene depicting an airfield or refuelling station. If you would like to participate in this club you will need to bring
your own model kit which should also be portable. It is a good idea to bring a named Tupperware container in
which to keep your model once you have started to build it. Most kits come with glue included but it is always
best to check as you cannot use PVC or Pritt stick glue.
American Football Club – Thursday (Year 6)
This is a fantastic opportunity for boys to stay behind after Games sessions on a Monday (Year 5) or Thursday
(Year 6) to learn and play American Football. This club is run in conjunction with the Jacksonville Jaguars, a
professional American Football team who currently play in the NFL. The program delivers a touch based
version of American football delivered by the Jacksonville Jaguars (NFL Team). The program is called ‘JagTag.’
This involves passing, catching, running and evading, and builds tactics and teamwork. The club will run
straight after the games session at WSG and the boys will be brought back to school for 5pm buses and pick
up. If this club is popular, we hope to open it up to other year groups in the Summer Term.
Architectural Drawing Club
Architecture club is a practical drawing club where we will look at a range of buildings and design styles,
covering the story of Architecture, and teach the skills required to draw buildings. A body of work will be created
leading to designing and drawing our own buildings.
Arts and Crafts Club – Years 3-5
During these sessions, children will work on a variety of projects in 2D and 3D. On our first session we vote on
what media everyone would like to work in (printing, clay, wire work, drawing, painting etc). Some sessions
may last one or two weeks, while other sessions may run for a number of weeks. The boys will have the
opportunity to work in pairs/groups and have fun experimenting, while improving their skills in Art.
Cartoon Club
Do you love drawing? Are you the next Walt Disney? At Cartoon Club you will be able to draw your favourite
super hero, create a flick book and even make up your own comic book. The boys will also look at cartoons
from yesteryear, to give them an understanding of what cartoons were like pre-CGI and to explore some of the
cartoon characters who have lasted through the years.
Chess Club
Chess Club is led by Tony Niccoli and his team of coaches. Mr Niccoli has produced many England players
and his schools often win national titles. Each session starts with a lesson covering a new theme on tactics or
positional play. Boys learn through having fun as well as playing competitive games. There are internal school
events open to all as well as a very competitive school chess team for more serious players.
Tuesday 4-5pm – Chess
No matter what your level is this session is open to all from beginner to established player. It is designed to be
fun but with a strong emphasis on learning.
Friday 2:20-4pm – Chess
Open to all players but a slightly longer session allowing the children to delve a bit more deeply into the game.
Wednesday 8-9am – Elite Chess (invitation only)
This new elite group started in 2016 and is for those who want to take their chess a lot more seriously. It is only
for those who have the ambition to play for the school chess team and would be willing to compete in some
events at weekends. It acts as invitation only but if you think you are up to the standard or would be willing to
put in some hard work please do apply. Each child has their own dedicated workbook and is supported to study
outside of school. Last year the school team reached the National Schools Finals from over 150 teams and we
want to keep up this record. Children who are in Elite Chess usually do this in addition to either the Tuesday
or Friday group.
If you have any questions about chess club please feel free to email Tony Niccoli directly on
Choirs
The Wetherby Choirs grows in numbers with every year that passes! Boys who wish to be part of these groups
should have a fine voice, sing in tune and be able to either read music or have a good aural memory. Mr Brawn
and Miss Orpwood audition boys who would like to join the Choirs at the beginning of each term. Please email
either of them at [email protected] or [email protected] if your son would
like to arrange an audition.
Wetherby Voices (Years 3-5 – Invitation only) – Monday 4-5pm
For boys who are interested in singing, and are willing to put effort into learning new vocal and choral skills.
We prepare them throughout the year for many exciting events and concerts.
Wetherby Choir (Years 6-8 – Audition Process) – Tuesday 8-9am
To provide boys with an opportunity to continue singing once they reach the Upper School. Here they can
continue to improve their vocal and choral skills, expand their repertoire and tackle more difficult pieces.
Chamber Choir (Invitation Only) – Tuesday 4-5pm
Boys from Years 5-8 are auditioned for a coveted position as a member of the Tour Choir. They are expected
to have an excellent vocal tone, and accurate intonation. Ability to sight-sing is greatly beneficial. Here they
tackle advanced choral works and close harmony pieces. Members of the Tour Choir are also expected to
attend all rehearsals of either the Lower School Choir or the Upper School Choir depending on their age.
Code Club – Lower School
This term, we will be using Bitsbox to make amazing mobile games like ‘Zombie Catcher’ and ‘Kitty Rescue’.
Boys will have a great time creating characters and programming them to make games they can share with
their friends. Bitsbox is a first step towards ‘grown up’ programming; it is a text-based language based on
JavaScript which is one of the most popular languages around.
This club is designed for children in Years 3 to 5 and is suitable for a range of abilities from beginners to more
intermediate programmers.
Code Club – Upper School
We have planned a whole series of new coding projects for the term that will appeal to everyone - from game
designers, to artists, to budding tunesmiths! Using JavaScript and Sonic Pi (a tool that allows children to
compose music with code), boys will become electronic musicians and create their own digital compositions.
This club is open to boys in Years 6-8, and is suitable for a range of abilities from beginners to more advanced
programmers.
Classical Greek Language Course (Friday)
Classical Greek Language Course is addressed to any boy in Year 6-8 who would wish to attend Classical
Greek Language lessons as an additional topic to Latin. Classical Greek is optional as a course and the main
purpose is to cover the Common Entrance Syllabus of Classical Greek Level 1 and/or to further progress in
Level 2 and/or scholarship level. The boys will be introduced to the following aspects of the Greek Language:
The Greek Alphabet
Transliteration of English words to Greek and the other way round
Reading and Pronunciation of Greek words
Derivation of many English words from Greek Language
Grammar A (conjugation of Verbs and Declensions of Nouns)
Grammar B (tenses of verbs: present, future and imperfect)
Translation of small or longer passages from Greek to English.
At the end of each academic year, the boys who will attend these lessons will sit for the Common Entrance
Level 1 Classical Greek exam paper (this will be compulsory) OR their scholarship Classical Greek if they
choose to do. This course is highly suggested for all the boys who are highly motivated by the subject of
Classics as well as the King’s Wimbledon Scholarship candidates. As in Winston Churchill’s words:
“Naturally I am biased in favour of boys learning English; and then I would let the clever ones learn Latin as
an honour and Greek as a treat”.
Classical Civilization Club
The aim of this club is to embrace the literature, history, art and architecture, politics, theatre, sports and
philosophy of Ancient Greece and Rome and to give the students a breadth of knowledge not just about the
ancient world but about our world too.
The students will be asked to create the map of Ancient Greece, to study about Greek gods and goddesses
and to look at the Trojan War. We have created small versions of all of the main characters in which we used
to tell the tale of Homer's glorious tale. Additionally, the students will be asked to work on art projects and make
their own artefacts, such as:
Create your own Ancient Greek Drama Masks (Theatre)
Make a replica of the Acropolis in Athens
Make a replica of the Coliseum OR of an ancient Greek theatre
Make Roman Soldier Figurines
Classical Civilisation is very highly regarded by universities across a wide range of disciplines. Many
universities, including Oxford and Cambridge recommend A Level Classical Civilisation for students intending
to read Classics, Classical Studies or Ancient History, and a knowledge of the classical past is particularly
useful for the study of history, English, politics, art and philosophy.
As in Aristotle’s words: “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit”.
Creative Writing – Monday (Years 3-5) & Tuesday (Years 6-8)
This term at Chelsea Young Writers we are providing children with the chance to understand how two of the
most popular genres of fiction writing - Fantasy and Comedy - are such good mediums for storytelling. Rather
than our previous theme-based approach - where a predetermined topic (such as Kings and Queens, Outer
Space) is used to provide a narrative framework for children to follow when creating their own stories - this
term will focus more specifically on the literary devices and techniques which are involved in genre writing.
The children will come away from this term’s course equipped with an array of specific skills for crafting fantasy
and humorous stories.
Cricket Club (Year 7&8)
Cricket sessions for Year 7&8 led by an ECB qualified coach on the astro-turf at Wetherby Sports Ground.
Collection for this club is at 5pm from School. Please contact Mr Billingham if you require further information
about this club or regarding pick up,
Debating
This is a lively and engaging club where boys are allowed to develop their speaking and listening skills. Each
week the boys engage with a topical question which can be anything from ‘should police be allowed to carry
firearms?’ to ‘should the Government have more control over social networking sites?’ The boys are then put
onto teams to debate each side of the argument and they spend the session working as a team to refine and
present their argument. The club is an excellent opportunity to develop the art of debating and it really helps
the boys become confident in their speaking ability.
D&T / Engineering Club - (Years 5-8) 4-5pm – Mr Tilleray
This is a club for those with creative curiosity and a head for problem solving. Explore technology and new
materials, creating constructions, and embarking on the design process from initial sketches to finished
plethora of exciting DT products to take home. Examples of the range of activities covered include woodwork,
digital design and 3D printing, cardboard construction, metalwork and e-textiles.
D&T Club – (Years 5-8) 5-6pm – Mr Van Greunsven
This is a highly practical club where students will be involved with a range of materials including plastics and
timber. The boys will undertake simple projects to begin with to get an understanding of how to work with
materials safely and efficiently. An aspect of design will be introduced to enable the boys to draw on their
creative side and see how a product is made from start to finish.
Detective Club – (Years 5-8)
Think you could be the next Sherlock Holmes? Join our club and test your skills!
By decoding messages, solving logic puzzles and sorting information, you will learn to figure out mysteries that
would confuse even the greatest detectives.
You will develop technique in deductive reasoning and analysing facts, and will learn all about organising clues
and the process of elimination, until it’s elementary, my dear Watson!
Drama Fun & Games – (Years 3-6)
Come and enjoy an afternoon of fun drama games and activities with Miss Waters. You will have a chance to
play some of your favourite characters and even make up some of your own in this after school club designed
for those with a dramatic streak who love to get up and perform on stage!
Drawing Club
In this club the more formal aspects of drawing will the taught, allowing the boys to develop their traditional
drawing skills. Each week there will be a theme, including tonal drawing, perspective, negative space and
drawing from life. We will look at the work of artists such as Dürer, Da Vinci and Degas.
English Word Games and Puzzles
An exciting club for boys in the Lower School. If you enjoy playing board games like ‘Articulate’, this club is for
you! We will be playing a range of board games with an English focus, solving crosswords problems and
challenging ourselves with a variety of word games.
Eton Fives
Eton Fives, one derivative of the British game of Fives, is a handball game, similar to Rugby Fives, played as
doubles in a three-sided court. The object is to force the other team to fail to hit the ball 'up' off the front wall,
using any variety of wall or ledge combinations as long as the ball is played 'up' before it bounces twice. Boys
will play every Friday at the Westway with an experienced Fives coach.

at 6.15pm.
Forensics Club – (Years 6&7)
Have you ever been curious about crime and forensic science? Are you a problem solver? Do you like scientific
design and experiments? Then look no further! Forensics club is the club for you! You will solve crimes using
problem solving and scientific techniques, for example, analysing hair fibres, soil samples, finger prints, blood
typing, ballistics and much more.
General Knowledge Quiz Club
Do you know what the capital of Mexico is? Or the world’s smallest animal? Who invented the television? Then
the General Knowledge Quiz Club is for you, put your knowledge to the test in weekly quizzes sent from the
official Quiz Club. As well as testing our knowledge, we will also be researching a range of topics, so if you
want to find out the answers to any of the questions above, then come and join!
Harry Potter Club
Welcome to the Magical world of Harry Potter. During this club boys will have the opportunity to build wands,
learn spells and go head-to-head in wizarding duels. Dive into the depths of the dark arts, and design your very
own magical creatures. Create your very own Quidditch team and take to the field in our fantasy league. You
have received your letter to Hogwarts, it’s now time to board the Hogwarts Express and join the journey!!
Horse Riding Club
This club is run in conjunction with Ross Nye Stables. The boys are given expert tuition by the instructors at
the stables. Lessons take place in Hyde Park, along the bridle paths and in the arena. Absolutely no experience
is necessary; the instructors are very happy to accommodate all boys, from complete beginners to advanced
riders. Hats and boots can be provided if required.
Jigsaw Puzzle Club
Jigsaw puzzles are a one-stop cognitive development and character-building activity. There are few
educational experiences that have the potential to teach such a varied range of thinking skills, as well as other
useful skills such as patience and perseverance. Learning these skills can benefit you at any stage of your life.
For example, jigsaw puzzles can teach you:
Problem-solving strategies
Project management skills
Self-management skills
Visual skills
Cognitive skills
Character development skills and traits
Tactile skills
Social skills
Collaborative skills
Kit Car Club
This is a brand new and very exciting club. We are going to build and race an electric car. This is a fantastic
opportunity for the boys work on a project that requires team work, engineering skills and design technology.
We will be building the car from only the kit provided and then designing the body work from scratch. Once we
have a completed car, we will take it to three different events around the country to race against other schools.
The company that designs the car is called Greenpower and there is an emphasis throughout the project on
green energy. Because of the unique nature of this club and the time it will take to build, to get the most out of
the project I would advise signing up for the whole year. There will only be limited number of spaces available
for this club due to building space and safety. See below for a rough timetable for this club:
Autumn 1 – Main build
Autumn 2 – Main build
Spring 1 – Building the body work
Spring 2 – Building the body work and race 1
Summer 1 – Project work and race 2
Summer 2 – Project work and race 3
If you would like any more information please look at the following website
http://www.greenpower.co.uk/racing/goblins or email Mr Froggatt on [email protected]

will be working on a variety of different Maths games and puzzles, using a number of different resources to
help to develop your logical and problem solving skills. We will even come up with some Maths puzzles of our
own!
Maths Revision
This club is for any Year 8 pupils who would like extra tuition in Common Entrance/Scholarship Maths and acts
as reinforcement of the main curriculum. Mr Gascoine, Miss Balgobin and Miss Martin are available from 4.00-
5.00pm every Thursday in 8G. There is no need to sign up in advance for these revision sessions.
Music Clubs
Music Ensemble Club – Thursday
For any musicians of portable instruments (guitars, violins, flute, etc.), ideally of Grade 1 standard and above.
This is an opportunity to play your instrument as part of a group, an essential skill for any musician. The group
will perform a variety of fun and accessible repertoire for their instrument and level throughout the year. As this
is a new initiative, the group will have the opportunity to name their new group!
Theory & General Musicianship Club (Chelsea Quavers, Wednesday 4-5pm)
Using a combination of the acclaimed series of Chelsea Quavers’ Music Puzzles© and the ABRSM Theory,
Aural & Sight Reading syllabus, pupils learn to read, write, transcribe, perform and compose music in a fun
and engaging way. What pupils learn will greatly enhance their understanding of not only their instrument, but
music as a whole. Each pupil progresses at his individual pace. Pupils also engage in percussive and rhythmic
performance, and enjoy instrumental demonstrations by our Tutors, as well as to each other. We encourage
any pupil who is studying an instrument to perform at Club. This builds confidence and develops listening skills
and appreciation. More information can be found at www.chelseaquavers.com or get in touch with Mr Brawn:
[email protected] if you would like to know more.
Please note that the cost of this club is £295 and this should be paid directly to Chelsea Quavers.
Origami and Colouring Club – (All year groups)
We will learn all about the Japanese Art of origami - you will soon be able to make animals, planes and all
kinds of objects! Practise your skills and take paper folding to the next level!
You will also have the opportunity to colour your creations for a fun end to the week.
Photography Club
For shutterbugs in Years 4-6, Photography Club will explore use of lighting, setting, subjects, objects and
symbolism in photography in and around school. Amateur and expert photographers welcome. Tablet cameras
will be provided but you may bring your own digital camera if you wish.
Reasoning Practice – for boys in Years 4 and 5
Boys in Years 4 and 5 are invited to Reasoning Practice on a Tuesday afternoon from 4-5pm. During this club,
we will focus on both Non-Verbal and Verbal Reasoning, which will help the boys to prepare for their Pre-Tests
in the Autumn of Year 6. We will look at various different exam techniques and strategies, and also complete
many ISEB style practice questions. Priority for places will be given to boys in Year 5, but Year 4 are also very
welcome to sign up too.
Running Club
This club is open to Years 5-8 for those boys keen to improve their running and fitness levels. We take the
boys to Hyde Park and run at a steady pace for approximately 25 minutes before returning to school. All levels
of running expertise are welcome! Due to the popularity of Running Club, we can only take a maximum of 15
boys and will prioritise boys who were not able to attend the club last term.
Skateboarding
With our highly trained instructors (My Little Boarders) in a funky, cultural venue we aim to teach kids the basics
of skateboarding, whilst allowing them to make new friends, learn skilful tricks, and maintain an interest in a
type of exercise that is fun to do. We provide all the equipment – skateboard, helmets, knee, elbow and wrist
pads and teach the children the fundamentals of skateboarding using our portable ramps. All our instructors
have been specialist trained to get the best out of their pupils and with our new wristband system the children
will learn how to street skateboard in no time.
Study Skills
This club is open to boys in Years 6-8 and will focus on different techniques to help with revision and
organisational skills. All boys will be encouraged to identify their preferred learning style and use this to develop
and improve their exam technique. We will also work on time management and ways to become better
organised at school.
Swimming
We run a comprehensive club swimming programme at Wetherby catering for all levels of swimming. We have
a Lower School and Upper School Swim Team that train as a squad on Wednesdays and Thursdays
respectively, and prepare for galas against other schools. The squad also prepares for the IAPS regional
qualifiers for nationals in late February and the London North League. We also have Junior Dolphins squad
sessions on Tuesday which include swimmers who are looking to improve their swimming ability and
endurance.
Tuesday: Junior Dolphins 4.15-5pm and 5-5.45pm
Tuesday is the Junior Development Dolphins day, with two 45 minute sessions. The first session is for boys
developing their swimming skills, who require more individual, one-on-one tuition. The later session is for squad
swimmers who need technique adjustments and endurance practice. Please email Mr Bayes on
[email protected] for more details.
Wednesday: 4.15-5pm Lower School Swim Squad A (Year 3, 4 and 5)
Wednesday: 5-5.45pm Lower School Swim Squad B (Year 3, 4 and 5)
Wednesday is the A and B Wetherby Lower School Swim Squad training session at Seymour Leisure Centre.
Entry into the team is strictly based upon on times taken in the 3 main strokes. Milan Knator will coach the A
and B squads for the busy schedule of galas in the 2016-2017 season. Milan is well known and respected in
the London swim circuit and we are very lucky to have him coaching our boys.
Pickups will take place from Seymour Leisure Centre at 5.10pm (Swim Squad A) and 5.55pm (Swim Squad
B).
Thursday: 4.30 – 5.30pm Upper School Swim Squad A and B (Years 6, 7 and 8)
Thursday is the A and B Wetherby Upper School Swim Squad training session at the Porchester Pool,
Queensway. We have 2 lanes, 1 for each squad. A bus will transport the boys to the pool on Thursdays and
leave WPS at 4.05pm.
Milan Kantor and Maciej Matura will coach the A and B squads for the busy schedule of galas in the 2016-
2017 season. Both coaches are well known and respected in the London swim circuit and we are very lucky to
have them coaching our boys. In all sessions, we teach components of fitness, strength, nutrition and
physiology. Thursday pickups will be from Porchester Pool at 5.45pm.
