Summary of Tested Specimens

For the purpose of the test the specimens were referenced Doorset A and Doorset B. Each doorset had overall nominal dimensions of 2080 mm high by 1010 mm wide and incorporated a door leaf of overall nominal dimensions2040 mm high by 940 mm wide by 44 mm thick.

Each doorset included a softwood door frame and a door leaf comprising softwood stiles and rails, a flaxboard core, MDF facings and was lipped with hardwood on the vertical edges.

Each doorset incorporated a concealed closer referenced “JW 900”, fitted mid-way between the upper and middle hinge positions. The closer fitted to Doorset B was bedded on intumescent mastic and was installed with the chain mechanism disengaged. The closer fitted to Doorest A was installed without any form of bedding material and in an operable manner. Doorset B also incorporated a surface mounted closer referenced “JW901 spring arm closer”, fitted to the exposed face at the approximate mid-height of the leaf.

Both leaves were hung within a softwood frame on three brass hinges referenced “J7012” on Doorset A and “J9050” on Doorset B.

The leaves were orientated such that they opened towards the heating conditions of the test. The doorsets were each fitted with a latch which was disengaged for the test duration.

Test Procedure Introduction The doorsets are required to provide a fire separating function and were therefore

tested in accordance with BS EN 1634-1: 2000 ‘Fire resistance tests for doors and shutter assemblies - Part 1: Fire doors and shutters’. This test report should be read in conjunction with that Standard and with BS EN 1363-1: 1999, ‘Fire resistance tests - Part 1: General requirements’ and BS EN 1363-2: 1999, ‘Fire resistance tests - Part 2: Alternative and additional procedures’.

The specimens were judged on their ability to comply with the performance criteria for integrity and insulation, as required by BS EN 1634-1:2000.

Fire Test Study Group/EGOLF

Certain aspects of some fire test specifications are open to different interpretations. The Fire Test Study Group and EGOLF have identified a number of such areas and have agreed Resolutions which define common agreement of interpretations between fire test laboratories which are members of the Groups. Where such Resolutions are applicable to this test they have been followed.

Instruction To Test

The test was conducted on the 29th April 2004 at the request of Frelan Hardware, the sponsor of the test.

Test Specimen Construction

A comprehensive description of the test construction is given in the Schedule of Components. The description is based on a detailed survey of the specimens and information supplied by the sponsor of the test.

The doorsets’ storage, installation, and test preparation took place in the test laboratory over a total, combined time of 5 days.

Installation The test sponsor supplied the doorset hardware during the week commencing 19th April 2004.

The doorsets were mounted within apertures provided within a low density, rigid supporting construction. Representatives of Warrington Fire Research Centre conducted installation on the 28th April 2004.

Sampling Warrington APT Laboratories selected and sampled all of the hardware incorporated within the test during the week commencing 18th April 2004.

Instrumentation

General The instrumentation was provided in accordance with the requirements of the Standard.

Furnace The furnace was controlled so that its mean temperature complied with the requirements of BS EN 1363-1: 1999, Clause 5.1 using six plate thermometers, distributed over a plane 100 mm from the surface of the test construction.

General Thermocouples were provided to monitor the unexposed surface of the specimens and the output of all instrumentation was recorded at no less than one minute intervals as follows:

Thermocouples 11 to 15 (Doorset A) and 16 to 20 (Doorset B)

At five positions on the unexposed surface of the doorsets, one approximately at the centre and one at approximately the centre of each quarter section of each doorset.

Thermocouples 21 to 24 (Doorset A) and 25 to 28 (Doorset B)

At four positions on the unexposed surface of each doorset, at 100 mm in from the door leaves vertical edges, two at mid-height, and two at 100 mm below the top edge of each leaf.

Thermocouples 29 to 32 (Doorset A) and 33 to 36 (Doorset B)

At two positions on the unexposed surface of each vertical frame member at mid-height and at two positions on the top horizontal frame member.

The locations and reference numbers of the various unexposed surface thermocouples are shown in Figure 1.

Roving Thermocouple

A roving thermocouple was available to measure temperatures on the unexposed surface of the specimens at any position which might appear to be hotter than the temperatures indicated by the fixed thermocouples.

Integrity Criteria Cotton pads and gap gauges were available to evaluate the integrity of the specimens.

Furnace Pressure The furnace atmospheric pressure was controlled so that it complied with the requirements of BS EN 1363-1: 1999. Clause 5.2. The calculated pressure differential relative to the laboratory atmosphere at the top of the specimens was 13.4 (±3) Pa.

Test Observations Time All observations are from the unexposed face unless noted otherwise.

mins secs The ambient air temperature in the vicinity of the test construction was 11ºC at the start of the test with no variation during the test.

00 00 The test commences.

01 20 Smoke issues from around the perimeter of each leaf.

05 30 Large volumes of flames issue from the exposed core of each doorset.

07 30 The leading edge of the door leaf to Doorset A has lowered onto the threshold.

08 30 The surface mounted closer of Doorset B has fallen away and is therefore having no retaining influence upon the leaf.

10 00 The leaf of Doorset B has begun to open up. There is glowing at upper left hand corner.

11 00 Sustained flaming occurs at the head of Doorest B where a through gap in excess of6 mm by 150 mm has formed because of the leaf opening. The leaf is closed and latched to continue the test. The specimen is deemed to have failed the integrity (sustained flaming, cotton pad and through gap) criteria of the test.

15 00 The leaf of Doorset B has lowered onto the threshold.

16 00 The leading edge of Doorset A remains flush with the stop over its height. There is a large amount of discolouration at the upper hinge position and at the position of the concealed closer.

21 00 There is a small amount of discolouration on the unexposed face of Doorset A at the concealed closer position and upper hinge position.

24 30 There is a small amount of glowing at the upper hinge position of Doorset A.

25 30 A cotton wool pad is applied to area of glowing which fails to ignite.

26 10 There is a small area of glowing at the upper hinge position of Doorset B.

28 30 A cotton pad is applied to the area of glowing on Doorset B, which failed to ignite.

Performance Criteria and Test Results

Integrity It is required that the specimens retain their separating function, without either causing ignition of a cotton pad when applied, or permitting the penetration of a gap gauge as specified in BS EN 1634-1: 2000, or resulting in sustained flaming on the unexposed surface. These requirements were satisfied for the periods shown below:

Doorset A Doorset B

Sustained flaming 32 minutes 11 minutes

Gap gauge 33 minutes* 11 minutes

Cotton pad 32 minutes 11 minutes

* The test duration. The test was discontinued after a period of 33 minutes

Insulation The mean temperature rise of the unexposed surface shall not be greater than 140°C and that the maximum temperature rise shall not be greater than 180°C (except on the door frame, where the maximum temperature rise shall not exceed 360°C). Insulation failure also occurs simultaneously with integrity failure as specified in BS EN 1634-1:2000. These requirements were satisfied for the periods shown below:

Doorset A Doorset B

32 minutes 11 minutes

The test was discontinued after a period of 33 minutes

Ongoing Implications Limitations This report details the method of construction, the test conditions and the results

obtained when the specific element of construction described herein was tested following the procedure outlined in BS EN 1363-1: 1999, and where appropriate BS EN 1363-2: 1999. Any significant deviation with respect to size, constructional details, loads, stresses, edge or end conditions other than those allowed under the field of direct application in the relevant test method is not covered by this report. Annex A of BS EN 1363-1: 1999, provides guidance information on the application of fire resistance tests and the interpretation of test data.

Page 36: WFRC TEST REPORT NO. 139234 The Fire Resistance ... TEST REPORT NO. 139234 The Fire Resistance Performance Of Two Specimens Of Fully Insulated, Single-Acting, Single-Leaf Doorsets,

Because of the nature of fire resistance testing and the consequent difficulty in quantifying the uncertainty of measurement of fire resistance, it is not possible to provide a stated degree of accuracy of the result.

Review The specification and interpretation of fire test methods are the subject of ongoing development and refinement. Changes in associated legislation may also occur. For these reasons it is recommended that the relevance of test reports over five years old should be considered by the user. The laboratory that issued the report will be able to offer, on behalf of the legal owner, a review of the procedures adopted for a particular test to ensure that they are consistent with current practices, and if required may endorse the test report.

Conclusions Evaluation Against Objective

Two specimens of single-acting, single-leaf timber doorsets incorporating various items of building hardware have been subjected to a fire resistance test in accordance with BS EN 1634-1: 2000, Fire resistance tests for door and shutter assemblies, BS EN 1363-1: 1999, General requirements and BS EN 1363-2: 1999, Alternative and additional procedures.

The evaluation of the doorsets against the requirements of BS EN 1634-1: 2000 showed that the doorsets satisfied the integrity and insulation requirements for a period of 32 minutes for Doorset A and 11 minutes for Doorset B.

The primary objective of the test was to evaluate various items of building hardware when incorporated within fire resistant doorsets. Because of this no field of direct application has been included in the report.

Date of Test 29th April 2004

Introduction The test referenced WFRC No. 139234 was conducted on two specimens of single-acting, single-leaf doorset, in accordance with BS EN 1634-1: 2000.

Test Results: Doorset A Doorset B

Sustained flaming 32 minutes 11 minutes

Gap gauge 33 minutes* 11 minutes

Integrity

Cotton Pad 32 minutes 11 minutes

Insulation 32 minutes 11 minutes

* The test duration. The test was discontinued after a period of 33 minutes

Discussion Doorset B incorporated a latch mechanism, which was rendered disengaged for the purpose of the test. After a period of 11 minutes integrity failure occurred due to the partial opening of the doorset after the door closing device failed to restrain the door leaf. The laboratory staff then returned the door leaf to the closed position and engaged the latch bolt. No further occurrences, which would constitute an integrity or insulation failure, occurred for the test duration.

It is therefore considered that had the latch bolt been engaged from the beginning of the test, then this would have retained the doorset in the closed position and thus the integrity and insulation performance of the doorset would have been satisfied for the full 33 minutes test duration.

Conclusion Had the specimen referenced Doorset B been rendered latched for the duration

of the test then it is expected that the doorset would have satisfied the integrity and insulation criteria for the full 33 minute duration of the test.
