Hello! My name is Cronotroglo and I'm 10 years old.I'm here to teach you about prehistoric art.

I hope you like it!

Hello! My name is Cronotrogla and I'm 10 years old, too.I have a question for you.

DO YOU KNOW WHAT PREHISTORY IS?

What do you know about Prehistory?

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT PREHISTORY?

Great! You know a lot about us! As you may know humans have always been artists. We are going to explain you different artistic manifestations of our times that you are going to learn with us, like:

Cave Art or Rock Art Portable

Art

Weapons and tools

Megalithic monuments

Caves

Petroglyphs

Venus

Sling stone

Harpoons

CAVE ARTWe first lived in caves. These caves are full of cave art or rock art. We painted on natural rock surfaces with natural materials like mud, coal, pigments, fat and blood.

MudCoal

FatBlood

Pigments

We used sticks, feathers and fingers like brushes.

finger

featherstick

brushes

We

Paintings were mostly of animals: horses, wild boars, bulls, deers…

We also painted human representations like war, hunting and everyday life (gathering food and ritual dances activities)

Would you like to visit any famous prehistoric caves?

One of the most important ones is Lacaux, in France. You

can do a virtual tour here.

There are a lot of caves in Spain. The

most known is Altamira.

You can visit its museum

here.

You can also visit the

Prehistoric Caves of

Cantabria and do a virtual tour here.

Why do you think we painted animals on cave walls?

Write true (T) or false (F) next to the following sentences.

Because...

- ... we loved arts and crafts.

- ... we painted the spirit of animals we hunted and depended on for food.

- ... we loved representing religious ceremonies.

- ... we liked telling stories about the animals on the rocks.

- ... they were beautiful.

- ... we loved decorating the caves.

What do you think is this painting about?

Is it about the war? Is it a battle scene? Is it a hunting scene?

Does it represent everyday life? Are they gathering food? Are they dancing?

At this point you know a lot about our cave art.

Why don’t you try to decorate a part of your school like a cave?

In order to imitate us we propose you to draw lying down on the floor with the paper under the table. You can use:

- Brown wrapping paper- Chalk pastels in earthy colors- You can choose some of these templates

PORTABLE ART

Don’t think that we only painted on rocks and walls. We also made portable art, meaning art that can be carried.

It consists of objects carved from stone, bone, or antler.

Here you have some examples:

- Venus figurines- Carved animal bone tools- Dimensional relief carvings

LET'S CREATE A VENUS!

You can try to make your own Venus. You can use clay, salt dough or plasticine.

Here you have some examples:

MEGALITHISM

We also built huge constructions. This art is known as megalithism. There are some examples in the Balearic Islands.

LET'S MAKE A MODEL!

To make this model you will need the following materials:- Air-drying clay or salt dough.- Wood board or card board.- Template.- Glue.- Green plasticine or tempera to colour the board.- Ruler.(If you use tempera you will need paint brushes, a glass of water and cloth).

Your teacher will show you some websites where you can see some templates of talaiots, taula and naveta.

TOOLS AND WEAPONS

As you can imagine to make all this art, to hunt or for daily life, we needed some tools and weapons like clubs, spears, arrows, axes and sling stones.se

LET'S MAKE A COSTUME OF A CAVEMAN

Now that you know us so well, you could make a costume to dress like us. Here you have an example made of interlining.

Here you have the materials they will need: 1. Interlining/felt/wrapping-paper (2 meters each student).2. Wax crayons (like manley): red, brown, black and ochre.3. Scissors4. A ruler5. Optional: cords to decorate. Steps to follow:1. Cut a piece of felt about 2 m length.2. Cut a hole in the middle about 30 cm diameter.3. Decorate it with prehistoric drawings or animal print.4. Cut a string of felt to make a belt.5. Cut a string of felt to make a hair band.

Here you have a template.
