October is here . My how the time has flown

by. Soon we will be welcoming in a bran new

year. But we have to get through this one

first. October is national breast cancer and

domestic violence awareness month. We

acknowledge an enemy among us that

attacks the inside as well as the outside. Both

are deadly to women. Both can be silent

killers. Women are sometimes ashamed to

admit that either one of them are ricking

havoc in their lives. We have to help women

understand it is ok to tell. It is ok to tell your

family that you found a lump. It is ok to

discuss it with your physicians.

It is ok to tell your neighbor that your

significant other is abusing you. It is ok to

discuss it with your clergy, physician and

family. Get help . Don’t let these silent

monsters kill you. You are worth so much

more than you can imagine.

Open up your mouth and talk about it.

Talking saves lives. Swift action saves lives.

Reporting it saves lives. Be proactive with

your life and not reactive.

Read our articles on breast cancer and

domestic violence. If these articles hit home

with you, your girlfriend, your loved ones,

your neighbor get help.

Be Blessed

Welcome to my finance column. Where we will learn a little

more about money and you. I look forward to keeping you

informed on personal finance issues. We may talk about fraud

prevention, scams, basic finance subjects such as budgeting,

loans, and savings, and many other things in the months to

come.

This month, I will help you understand some of the social

networking scams that are happening.

Phishing – What is phishing? It is a spoof on “fishing.” One is

thrown a line of “bait”, with the hopes that one will “bite”.

Scammers try to obtain financial or other confidential

information from Internet users, typically by sending an

e-mail that looks as if it is from a legitimate

organization, usually a financial institution, but contains

a link to a fake Web site that replicates the real one.

(Dictionary)

•SMishing

A compound of ‘phishing’ and ‘SMS’. SMishing is a

type of phishing attack where mobile phone users

receive text messages containing a web site hyperlink,

which, if clicked would download a Trojan horse to the

mobile phone. (Webopedia)

•Vishing

The telephone equivalent of phishing. Vishing is the

act of using the telephone in an attempt to scam the

user into surrendering private information that will be

used for identity theft. The scammer usually pretends

to be a legitimate business, and fools the victim into

thinking he or she will profit. (Webopedia)

Okay, so now you know what some of the popular terms mean.

Now, how do you know if it is phishing or a legitimate request?

Here are some things to look for:

•Spelling and Grammar – Most legitimate companies would

NEVER allow spelling and grammar mistakes to be sent out to

their customers or potential customers.

•Links in e-mails – Hover over a link and look at the web

address displayed. Is it the same as what the link shows? If

not, this could be a red flag. Also, links may take you to

malicious files or software. Even if the e-mail came from

someone you know, check with them to make sure they really

sent it, before clicking on links, opening pictures or music files,

etc…

Page 7: What Every Fat Girl Wants Magazine October 2011

7

•Threats – the e-mail threatens you to take action, or else. Be

very wary of these types of threats. They are meant to scare

you into clicking fraudulent links.

•Personal Information – Are they asking you to give them

personal information that they should already have on file? If

you are unsure, let them know you will be contacting them by a

phone number or e-mail address that you already have for

them.

•Secure Sites – Prior to entering your personal information into

a website, verify it is secure. The address should read https:

the “s” stands for secure. There should also be a picture of a

closed pad lock, usually either in the address bar or the bottom

right corner of the screen.

Do you suspect that you may have fallen victim to one of these

fraudulent attempts? You may be a victim of identity theft and

not even know it. You can visit www.annualcreditreport.com to

get your FREE credit report. This method of checking your

report will not hurt your credit.

By law, a person may obtain their own credit report for free

once per year from each of the credit reporting agencies.

This means, every 4 months you should be checking your

credit. The three most used agencies are Equifax, Experian,

and TransUnion.

•TIP: Mark in on your calendar which agency you will check.

For instance, every January, check Equifax, every May, check

Experian, and every September, and check TransUnion.

You will not receive your credit score from these credit reports.

However, your score is not important for identity theft

purposes. This report will show you everything that is being

reported under your name.

Breast Cancer Early Detection

One of the earliest signs of breast cancer can be an

abnormality that shows up on a mammogram before it can be

felt. The most common signs of breast cancer are a lump in

the breast; abnormal thickening of the breast; or a change in

the shape or color of the breast. Finding a lump or change in

your breast does not necessarily mean you have breast cancer.

Additional changes that may also be signs of breast cancer

include:

•Any new, hard lump or thickening in any part of the breast

•Change in breast size or shape

•Dimpling or puckering of the skin

•Swelling, redness or warmth that does not go away

•Pain in one spot that does not vary with your monthly cycle

•Pulling in of the nipple

•Nipple discharge that starts suddenly and appears only in one

breast

•An itchy, sore or scaling area on one nipple

Mammography screening remains the best available method

to detect breast cancer early. However, no medical test is

always 100 percent accurate, and mammography is no

exception. Research is under way to improve the technology to

lead to better accuracy and to create new technologies .

It is important for women to practice the elements of good

breast health. It is suggested women:

Obtain regular mammography screening starting at the age of

40.

Obtain annual clinical breast exams

Perform monthly breast-self exams

Obtain a risk assessment from a physician

Welcome to my sports column! Some of us WEFGW ladies are

sports enthusiasts and some of us are not. This is where I come

in. Articles for this column will be on basic sports knowledge, as

well as other sports topics of interest.

So, we have all heard the blonde joke:

A guy decides to bring his new blonde girlfriend to a football

game. After the game is over, he asks her if she liked the game.

She replies, “Oh it was great, I loved watching those men in

tight pants, but there is one thing I didn’t understand.”

“What did you not understand?” the guy asks.

She replies back, “Well, at the beginning of the game, both

teams flipped a quarter to see who would kick the ball first.

Then the rest of the game everybody was yelling “get the

quarterback, get the quarterback, get the quarterback!” So, I

thought to myself, “gosh, it’s just a quarter!”

Does this sound like you? Well, let me help you out a bit. The

object of the game is not to get the quarterback (contrary to

what

some football fanatics might tell you). For those of you who

don’t know, the quarterback is the player that gives the ball to

one of his teammates, with hopes that the teammate will

advance the ball to the opponents’ end zone. THAT is the

object of the game, to get the football into your opponents’ end

zone (The rectangular area at each end of the field).

Basically, whoever does that the most, wins. Sounds simple,

right? Well, kind of…

The offense is the team that has the ball. Their job is to get the

ball into the opponents’ end zone to score points.

The defense is the team that is “defending” their end zone.

Their job is to not let the offensive team get the ball into their

end zone.

There are 5 different ways to score in football:

Page 19: What Every Fat Girl Wants Magazine October 2011

19

•A Touchdown is worth 6 points. This is where the

offense takes the ball into the end zone, either running

the ball or throwing the ball.

•A Point-After-Touchdown (PAT for short, also

commonly known as an extra point) is worth 1 point. A

team kicks the ball into the uprights for a “bonus” point

after a touchdown.

•A Two-Point Conversion is worth 2 points. A team

can try for 2 “bonus” points after a touchdown by

running or throwing a pass into the end zone, from a

short distance.

•A Field Goal is worth 3 points. A team can try for a

field goal if they don’t think they will be able to score a

touchdown, and if they are in kicking range.

•A Touchback is worth 2 points. This happens when

the defensive recovers the ball in their own end zone.

A team cannot score a PAT or a Two-Point Conversion

alone. A touchdown must be made in order to attempt

for one of the “bonuses.”

Ideally, a team wants to score more touchdowns than

field goals. However, for the sake of getting points on

the board, often times, and a field goal must be

kicked.

Next time, we will get into a little more detail of how

the offense and defense works. I look forward to

helping you understand our sports a little more.

Communicating With Your Hairstylist

Have you ever walked into the salon excited about your soon-to-

be new look and walked out enraged because things didn’t go

quite like you had imagined? We (yes, me too) have all

experienced horrible service whether it be customer service in

general or a terrible haircut or hairstyle. I see ladies all too

often that come in the salon with nightmare experiences from

their last salon, and nine times out of ten it’s a communication

breakdown. There is a method to the madness and I want to

share some tips that may just help you from going down that

road again.

Schedule a consultation. This step is so important to your

overall experience at the salon. When you find a salon or hair

stylist, you want to make sure you schedule a consultation to

communicate what your ideas or desires are for your hair.

Remember that communication is a two-way street. You need

to provide information and understanding to your hairstylist and

the hairstylist needs to provide information and professional

direction to you. To avoid miscommunication, give as much

information as possible about your hair and its history and also

get some understanding of basic terminology such as layering,

feathers, tapering and trimming. If you don’t understand what

the stylist is saying, this is the perfect time to ask. Make sure

that the stylist is easy to talk to with a pleasant personality, and

the same is expected from you, the client.

Get a virtual makeover. There are online websites that allow

you to get a virtual makeover by uploading a photo of yourself

and try on different hairstyles to get an idea of how a particular

style, cut or color may look on you before you actually commit.

When you find a look that you like, print it out and take it in to

the stylist to show during your consultation. This is a pretty

neat idea.

24

Page 25: What Every Fat Girl Wants Magazine October 2011

Bring pictures. We are visual people. It’s hard to describe a

cut or style and be sure that the person listening really

visualizes the same picture in their mind as you. You’re

taking a huge chance of not getting the look you were

hoping for. So, show us a photo of the cut you had that you

really liked or bring photos printed from online or from a

magazine of the look you want to see on yourself to be

certain you are getting what you want.

Be realistic. Keep in mind that magazine photos are taken at

a photo shoot where there’s a hairstylist and an assistant or

two right by the models’ side during the whole shoot to

make sure every hair is in place. They may use wind

machines, hair pieces, extensions, and even whole cans of

hair spray. There are also lights shining on the models’ hair

to make the color more vibrant. Not to mention the photo

retouching that gives the hair an even shinier, fuller look.

So, try to bring photos of models or celebrities at movie

premiers or on the red carpet. These photos look more

natural because there’s not a stylist trailing them right

before the shot fixing every hair that’s out of place.

Speak up. Tell your stylist if you didn’t really care for that

last look she gave you. Be specific. Tell them why you did

or didn’t like the style (be gentle) and discuss what you

would like to achieve this time around. It doesn’t help you

or the stylist if communication stops because you refused to

speak to the one who can help get it right. Take a deep

breath, call them up or on your next visit communicate the

issue right away and work together.

Listen. Be open to the recommendations and direction your

stylist has to offer. If you have done your homework and

chose a salon or stylist you feel you will can vibe with, then

there has to be a certain level of trust. Listen, ask questions

and get a good understanding of their suggestions so you

can then make an informed decision. Ultimately, it’s your

call.

If all of the above fails, then you have no choice but to

move along and find another stylist. Pay attention to

styles that you like on your friends, co-workers or even the

cashier. Especially if they have a similar cut like the one

you’ve been envying or a similar hair type and texture as

yours. Don’t be afraid to stop and ask where they go to get

their hair done. They’ll more than likely be flattered.

On today's hotlist is Abduction, all I can say

Wow!!!! I was so impressed with this new up

and coming actor: Taylor Lautner one of the star

attractions in the Twilight saga. He has shown us

an even deeper, more meaningful side. Just

when you thought he could not be any more

passionate than when he found out about the

wedding in the Twilight series, he surprises us

with his new found maturity and cool

headedness.

The plot pulls you in at the beginning with his

eyecandyness laying in nothing but his boxers on

his friends lawn, from then on you are hooked. I

have never been so thrilled to see a movie

progress. I chose this film because it is definitely

worth your time. Overall I give this movie an 11

out 10 rating it is a must see. This is CJ and this is

my movie critique of the week.
