http://kevinoefelein.com In case you missed it, something amazing happened yesterday… A man named Felix Baumgartner sky dived from the edge of space—24 miles high. As if it’s necessary to tell you, that was a record. Also setting a record was the fact that he reached speeds of up to 834 miles per hour and actually broke the sound barrier. All pretty impressive… But what’s it have to do with growing your business? Probably nothing! But maybe you could find some things. The fact is, this was a pretty amazing achievement, years in the making. And while this jump was delayed for almost a week, it ended up occurring on a pretty special day, 65 years to the day after Chuck Yeager first broke the speed of sound in a plane. It was a pretty special anniversary, indeed. In that vein, here’s a list of some of the most important events in marketing history: 1872: Aaron Montgomery Ward produces the first mail-order catalog for his Montgomery Ward mail order business. 1887: Asa Chandler creates the world’s first coupon , deriving it from the French word “couper,” meaning “to cut.” 1905: John E Kennedy pens “Reason-why Advertising” and introduces the notion of advertising as “salesmanship in print.” 1917: The Direct Mail Advertising Association is established. 1923: Claude C Hopkins writes “Scientific Advertising.” 1928: Third class bulk mail postage rates are established. 1988: The first use of commercial email on the Internet. 1995: Yahoo! And AltaVista become the world’s first internet search engines. Anyway, I’ve got to run. I know I left off a few major events, but we’ll see if we can do better next time.
