• What impact did the Berlin Conference have on the Congo?

• Another result of the conference was that the area around the Congo River basin became the personal property of King Leopold II of Belgium. The area was over 2 million square kilometres and over 75 times the size of Belgium. Leopold named his property the Congo Free State and gave himself the title King of the Congo Free State.

• Another outcome of the conference included free trade throughout the Congo Basin among the conference countries. An agreement to prohibit the international slave trade was also established.

• Congo Free State• In 1885, immediately after the Berlin Conference, Belgian King Leopold II gave himself the title King of the Congo Free State. The

Congo Free State was not the property of Belgium but the personal property of Leopold. Agreements were made to establish boundaries with the French Congo to the north and Portuguese-controlled Angola to the south.

• One of Leopold's first tasks as King of his new realm was to get rid of Arabian slave traders who occupied the area. One of the aims of the Berlin Conference was the abolition of the slave trade. Belgian soldiers, financed by a European anti-slavery group, eventually drove out the slave traders. Leopold reaped double rewards for this success, though it had cost him nothing. He received the credit for the victory and his position in the area was strengthened.

• Leopold then began to exploit the area, its peoples and its natural resources.

• Tidying up agreements • In 1886 Britain and Germany settled the boundaries between German East Africa and the British territory

to be known as Rhodesia. And Germany recognized Britain's claim to Zanzibar.• The year 1890 was a year of agreements. Britain recognized France's attempt to dominate Madagascar in

exchange for the French recognizing Britain's domination of Zanzibar and what was becoming Nigeria. And the British and Germans signed a treaty, the British recognizing German East Africa and the Germans recognizing Uganda as "falling within the British sphere."

• The British and Mwanga signed a treaty, Mwanga accepting British protection, and in 1894 the British declared Uganda a protectorate.

• In 1895 Menelik signed a treaty with the Italians – the Treaty of Wuchale -- granting them control over Eritrea.

• In 1898 the French were claiming possession of the Upper Nile and that Britain had failed to achieve “effective occupation” in the Upper Nile as required by the Berlin Conference. But the French government chose not to war against the British, and in 1899 the French signed an agreement recognizing the Upper Nile as a British sphere of influence.
