What is it? What course do I take? When is it due?
What is the Honors Capstone?
The Honors Capstone is a formal thesis or creative project of the student’s choosing to be directed by a
faculty mentor, in most cases, from the students major department.
The Honors Capstone is a final project for Honors. It can be a research project, a unique or creative project, or
an artistic performance (e.g. theater, music, dance).

What course do I take?
Some students have a course already built-in to their major that will satisfy the capstone requirement (e.g.
INT 495, HIS 499). A list of majors and the corresponding courses can be found on our capstone website: http://www.uky.edu/academy/capstone.
If your major does not have a course built-in, register for HON 398 for 3 credit hours.

What is expected for an Honors Capstone?
The deliverable for an Honors Capstone is a minimum
15-page, double-spaced, research paper as well as a presentation. A research paper with a minimum of
4500 words is expected to be produced.
For artistic performances, no formal paper is required since the performance itself serves as the thesis and
presentation combined.
For unique projects the expected deliverable will vary.

Where do I need to present my capstone?
Presenting your capstone can be done through many
different venues. If your capstone course is built in to your major, and has a presentation requirement in the course, that is all that is needed. Presenting at a colloquium or conference
through your academic department is also an option.
Several other venues for presenting your capstone take place in both Fall and Spring semesters, including the
Showcase for Undergraduate Scholars, Kentucky Honors Roundtable, the Southern Regional Honors Conference, and
the National Conference for Undergraduate Research.
Where do I need to present my capstone?
When is it due?
The Honors Capstone is completed in the student’s
Junior or Senior year.
This is because the capstone is designed to round-out your educational experience. Having most of your
major coursework completed helps to provide you with a base knowledge to use to toward completion of your
capstone project.
When is it due?

How do I secure a faculty mentor?
For students completing HON 398, choose a faculty
mentor based on what you want to research or produce with your capstone. Find a faculty member with
knowledge and expertise in that area that can help to guide your research efforts, and ask them to be your
faculty mentor for this project.
For students that have a pre-approved capstone course, your faculty mentor is the class professor (reminder, pre-approved capstone courses do not require you to
submit a capstone proposal form).
